Kicker

Our take on the Kicker CompVT 08CVT654

Kicker's space-saving CompVT subwoofers combine outstanding power handling with the ability to fit in your vehicle's tight spots. These extra-shallow speakers combine extended cone excursion and a slender frame, without sacrificing sound quality or bass impact.

Kicker's 08CVT654 6.5" sub handles up to a hefty 150 watts RMS, while requiring less than 3 inches of mounting depth. The rigid, injection-molded polypropylene cone provides excellent definition and depth, while the ribbed Santoprene™ rubber surround helps control cone movement for accurate response. Perimeter venting on the stamped-steel basket keeps the sub cool under pressure.

This super-slim sub works in free-air applications, so you can install them in car doors, rear decks, and other places too tight for normal subs. This versatile subwoofer also works in a sealed box, so you can build your own custom enclosure. A unique design lets you mount the CompVT sub directly against the back wall of an enclosure while allowing for excursion clearance. Use your imagination — this Kicker CompVT sub lets you put well-rounded bass in almost any vehicle or boat.

  • 6.5" 4-ohm subwoofer

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Cone: The cone is a modified spoke cone design so the CVT series woofers are much more shallow than their standard CVR counterparts. The ultra high performance injection molded polypropylene cone remains rigid and minimizes cone flex, lowering harmonic distortion. Distortion in the cone is further reduced with 360° back bracing.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Basket and Motor Assembly: The high-strength steel basket features a low-profile open design, and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting relieves pressure under the spider, supports a linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.

Tinsel Leads: CVT subwoofers use Spiralead tinsel-lead technology, which allows the ideal amount of flex for better strength and durability. The tinsel lead wires are woven into the spider to relieve mechanical stress.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VT speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation. The boot is removable if needed for tight installations.

Marine Ready: This woofer is made with a powder coated, weather resistant basket and stainless steel hardware, so it can be used in marine and mobile applications.

Enclosure Compatibility

Depth: Kicker's new CVT series is designed to minimize depth, giving you subwoofer options where standard enclosures don't fit. The vent-less, solid-pole design allows the woofer to be mounted directly against the rear wall of a sealed or vented enclosure. The spring-loaded binding posts are mounted parallel to the cone surface to minimize depth. Also the steel Clearance Adapter Plate enables you to cut out part of the back of the enclosure to create more room for the woofer magnet, subtracting the enclosure wall depth from the equation.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume:

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 0.2 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 150 watts RMS.
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 3.0 cu/ft; the woofer can handle up to 150 watts RMS

Note: The power handling specifications listed with the vented enclosure recommendations apply only when a 25Hz, 24dB/octave subsonic filter (sold separately) is used with this woofer. If a subsonic filter is not used, power handling may decrease, and the life of the woofer may be shortened.

Recommended Enclosure: Kicker recommends a sealed enclosure for the 08CVT654. A vented enclosure is not recommended. The enclosure should be filled to 50% with loose poly-fil (polyester fiberfill) stuffing. The panel dimensions for a 0.2 cubic foot compact sealed enclosure (using 1/2" thick MDF) are:

  • Front and Rear Panels: 14" x 14"
  • Top and Bottom Panels: 14" x 2"
  • Side Panels: 13" x 2"

Pleasant surprise

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I have limited space in my 2000 Miata and needed some bass to overcome road noise and limitations of my door speakers. I mounted one kicker speaker as a free-air application, in the removable metal bulkhead panel behind the passenger seat. (I also took the opportunity to cover the back of the panel with insulation to combat possible vibration). Coupled with a Profile 200w mono amp using heavy duty Velcro hook strips to mount to the carpet. A tight fit but the largest sub that would work. What a nice suprise - this little sub packs a punch and really makes a difference. I was thinking I would need to purchase a second sub (to mount behind driver) but I think this will work great for my needs (pop/rock).

I originally ordered a Blaupunkt 2 channel sub from Crutchfield which arrived with the right channel DOA. Crutchfield exchanged with no-hassle after some painless troubleshooting via phone. Nice going Crutchfield.

Confused about recommendation

Written By David, Frostburg, MD on Tuesday, April 14, 2009

When I asked a Crutchfield expert he said there were no subs on the site that could replace the sub in my 2003 jeep wranglers center consol without modifications. So I searched other site and found reviews about this sub being used in other jeeps. The only modification I can think the advisor was talking about is the rubber boot (pictured on the sub around the magnet) needed removed but it was designed to be removable anyway. For its size it definitly surpasses the stock jeep sub. I would definitely recommend for other Jeep users, with an amp of course. So far the rest of my purchases from Crutchfield have been exact fits like the stereo, front and roll bar speakers.

Big (enough) Bass in a Small Package

I bought this sub because it was one of the few options I had for my tight space constraint situation- an underseat mount in my Subaru Baja. Even with a small box, the sound is still great. It's powered at 150 RMS and the box inner dimensions only give it a measley 0.14 ft^3 of volume to deal with, but it definitely cuts the mustard in the bass department. P.S. Crutchfield rocks in the speedy shipping/service department!

JBL replacement, late 90's Explorer

Crutchfield Customer Review

I have the premium Ford sound system in my Explorer and the 10+ year old subwoofer ripped apart. First section is a small review of the process, second and conclusion is about the speaker itself.

This (sub)woofer almost fit. The plastic "Kicker" ring around the top of the speaker was too large for the opening. Once the ring is trimmed back to the basket, it fits snugly(warranty nulled). The OEM mounting is 4 bolts. I predrilled tiny holes for the other 4 and used #8x3/4" screws to try and secure it a little more. The plastic is too soft for any torque so gently tighten down by hand. I guessed at the wire codeing. White wire to black terminal, green wire to red terminal?

The sound is pretty much right on stock. I haven't ran any test discs. Only what I had in the changer and FM radio. Don't be fooled by it's size, this little beast weighs in close to 6lbs and looks like it has a fairly long excursion.
The basket appears to be made of fiberglass, but there were metalic particles mixed in when I was cutting down the edges. It's either a metalic polymer or a coating applied to a stamped basket. I didn't Dremel down far enough to really see for sure.

Since I have no control over the amp or box; I would say this was a great purchase for what I needed. I regret having to modify the speaker to make it fit in the recessed box. But I didn't have any choice other than a used direct replacement at twice the cost. Crutchfield always comes in handy.

rear deck

Written By omar, chicago on Saturday, December 13, 2008

I bought 2 to put in the rear deck of my maxima powered at 150x2 rms ..I dynamated the rear deck also. They def reproduce lower frequencies accurately.

Big Con: In a free air application they distort at very the low end and at high volumes....im assuming that it's because they arn't in a box. I just bought polk mmc650's to put in the rear deck and im making a custom box for the two subs....hopefully they don't distory in a closed box+stuffing. Either way i don't regret buying them...i didn't want two big subs in my trunk anymore and even with the box im going to be saving alot of space.

Free Air Application

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I bought this speaker for the Free Air application. I was trying to use it on the under side of the trunk on my Mototrcycle. Although the one review I read said it did fine in a car for a free air application, it did not work in a truely free air situation. I think the speaker is of great quality, just wasn't enough for what I needed.
Crutchfiled however, are great to deal with! Superior customer service and return policies. I sent them an email asking about returing the speaker and they sent me one back within 24 hours with a shippig label to send it back! I wll definately continue to purchase from Crutchfield online!! Thanks!!

The type of bass you get from your component subwoofer doesn't depend on the woofer alone. You'll need a strong, tightly constructed enclosure for optimum subwoofer performance.
