Our take on the Kicker 08TS10L72

by Dominic Devito
Kicker

Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

Kicker's space-saving 08TS10L72 enclosed subwoofer combines an ultra-efficient 10" L7 subwoofer with a tough ported enclosure that's designed to fit in tight spots — a great bass solution for owners of pickups and compact vehicles.

The square Solo-Baric L7 10" sub delivers big bass with its rigid injection-molded polypropylene cone and responsive Santoprene™ rubber surround. The patented cone design makes this sub one tough customer — it can handle loads of power while it pumps out low notes without distortion. The enclosure's overall 2-ohm impedance allows the sub to draw maximum wattage from a mono sub amplifier.

The 08TS10L72 enclosure comes built to last with rugged 3/4" medium-density fiberboard construction. The strategically placed port increases bass response from the compact enclosure, and the tapered design allows it to fit comfortably into more pickups, coupes, and compact vehicles. Durable carpeting covers and protects the enclosure, and an embroidered Kicker logo highlights the carbon-fiber finish on the front panel. Spring post terminals offer a secure connection to your audio system.

Features

Enclosure: The enclosure is constructed from non-resonant 3/4" Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and protected by a layer of rugged catalyzed polyurethane.

Dual Voice Coils: The woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils that are wired in parallel, presenting a 2-ohm mono load.

Square Design: By making the Solo-Baric square, Kicker is giving you the most possible cone area (or Sd) for a given size baffle, 16% to 20% more area than a conventional subwoofer. More cone area means the Solo-Baric L7 moves more air, resulting in louder, deeper bass.

Cone Materials: The square SoloKon design is a unique one-piece construction, using polypropylene material that moves as a lightweight piston, for improved control. The cone remains rigid, minimizing cone flex and distortion. A rear cone brace integrates into the cone with a continuous contact perimeter weld, which offers unmatched strength and resistance to deformation under pressure.

Surround: The tough, flexible Santoprene rubber surround has a long-throw, positive-roll design, which controls extreme cone excursion and is highly tear-resistant. The corners of the surround are ribbed to ensure linear cone motion. The surround is stitched to the reinforced cone edge, making separation between them virtually impossible.

Spider: The woofer is equipped with a wide poly-cotton spider which easily handles high cone excursions due to its increased diameter and unique shape.

Enhanced BAM (Basket And Motor) Assembly: The Solo-Baric L7 utilizes a high strength stamped steel basket which features a low-profile open design and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting in the BAM relieves pressure from under the spider, supports linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.

Dual Voice Coil: The dual ultra length voice coils sustain enormous cone excursion and provide flexible impedance matching options. The high-temperature Polyimide Film Voice Coil former improves sonic and conducive properties, and prevents thermal-electrical meltdown. The voice coils are rated to 220° Celsius.

UniPlate Construction: The Solo-Baric L7 features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented hyper-extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

  • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation and maximum power handling ability.
  • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux from the voice coil gap.
  • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement and responsive low bass.
  • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out and corresponding damage.

Tinsel Lead Wires: The sleeved, high-power tinsel lead wires eliminate broken leads and power loss, due to the common use of "insufficient-gauge" lead wires. The lead wires are terminated with multiple polymer-based strain-relieving mechanical fasteners.

Spring Posts: The spring posts will accept bare wire, banana plugs, dual banana plugs, and pin connectors.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Solo-Baric L7 woofers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speakers very stiff "out-of-the-box". Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A "broken-in" subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Specifications Note

Sensitivity: In the Features and Specs section, the sensitivity is automatically rounded up to 87 dB. The enclosure actually has a sensitivity rating of 86.8 dB.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered the kicker 10" 2ohm with enclosure for my 2011 Subaru STI. I'm very happy, it does well being in the trunk and is powered by a 1000 watt Lightning Audio amp that can run 750 watts at 2ohm's and will make this sub THUMP when you want it to. Works well at lower volumes as well to add the needed bass for the everyday listing pleasure.

Just awesome

I put this in my 2000 Ford Lightning and let me just say wow! I have it hooked up to a Kicker 2 ohm 750.1 mono amplifier and this thing really hits.

I wanted something that would fit in my truck and still be heard 5 cars back. Kicker is by far top dog.

I put this in a S10 single cab and paired it with a Alpine 500w/2ohm V Power amp, and it straight beats, Got a loud music ticket 2 hours after I hooked it up. I ran a 138.3 db. Kicker is the best, I wont ever buy a different brand of sub.

Kicker 08TS10L72

Written By Dustin, California on Friday, March 21, 2008

I have this hooked up to my 2002 Mustang Gt with the Mach 460 stereo system. I was just looking for more bass but I had a very limited amount of space so I had to go with a sub designed for trucks and even lay it flat in my trunk. I have had and have listened to many different subs and for the size of this sub, the performance is nothing short of spectacular. This sub hits really hard, it doesn't go as low in frequency as a 12in would but it is really loud. I have it hooked up to an Alpine MP450 amp witch is only putting out 400 watts rms meaning the sub is 200 watts under powered and I am still nothing short of amazed.
