Our take on the Kicker 10C82

by John Pollard
Kicker

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Big boom for the buck
Strong bass adds a whole new dimension to your car's sound system, and Kicker Comp subwoofers give you tremendous bass value for your dollar. You'll hear and feel the power of Kicker bass without feeling like your wallet just got thumped.

2-ohm impedance for more power
Kicker's 10C82 8" subwoofer handles 100 watts RMS to bring out the depth your music's been missing, and its 2-ohm impedance brings out max power from your mono amp. This versatile sub works well in sealed or ported enclosures, and it's even suitable for free-air applications.

Kicker technology at work
This Comp sub features a flex-resistant polypropylene cone with 360-degree back bracing for hard-hitting lows without distortion. Its ribbed foam surround helps to keep the cone on target, while double stitching ensures your investment won't come apart at the seams. A tough steel basket provides a reliable foundation for big bass, and extensive venting ensures long-lasting performance that won't break down when the bass gets heavy.

Subwoofer Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Subwoofer Features

Ribbed Foam Surround: The optimized ribbed foam surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is double-stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The Kicker Comp subwoofer features durable Spiralead tinsel leads, which are woven into the woofer's progressive-roll polycotton spider, for added strength and reliability.

Steel Basket with Vented Pole Piece: The Kicker Comp subwoofer features a resilient, steel basket with coil-cooling perimeter venting and a vented pole piece for heat dissipation, so the high-temperature voice coil stays cool.

Speaker Terminals: The spring-loaded, nickel-plated terminals provide solid connections for speaker wire up to 10-gauge. Single banana plugs and pin connectors will also fit.

Rubber Magnet Boot: A black rubber boot covers the outside edge of the magnet structure to improve the cosmetics of the woofer and protect the magnet during installation.

Enclosure Compatibility

Enclosure Versatility: The Kicker Comp subwoofer is versatile, performing well in vented or sealed enclosures, and in free-air applications also.

Sealed Enclosure Applications: A sealed enclosure design offers the smoothest response, with increased energy at the lowest frequencies (between 20 to 30 Hz).

  • Compact (minimum enclosure volume): 0.5 cubic feet
  • SQ (maximum enclosure volume): 1.2 cubic feet

Recommended Vented Box Volume: A vented enclosure design is the choice for loud, high-performance bass for SPL contests.

  • Compact: 0.66 cubic feet with a 1.5" x 8" slot port opening that is 18" deep
  • SQ: 1.2 cubic feet with a 1.5" x 8" slot port opening that is 12.25" deep

Note: The SQ enclosures generates a flatter response curve and extends sub-bass response.

Infinite Baffle Mounting: The Kicker Comp subwoofers are also designed to be used as free-air drivers. The infinite baffle mounting method effectively utilizes the trunk of a sedan as the enclosure.

Great Subwoofer

Written By Reggie, Jacksonville, FL on Saturday, June 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ive got 2 8's being run by Alpine MRP-M500 in the trunk of my Corvette Convertible. I was hesitant to go with such a small subwoofer, but this is the biggest size i could fit in my trunk. I wired them in Series, and they Sound Great, a.most as good as the 12" i was running in my last car. Look great, sounds awesome, great price
Pros:
Great sound, Good price.
Cons:
Did not include a speaker grill.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2001 Yukon XL with the non-Bose factory subwoofer that was blown. I purchased this subwoofer to replace it because of the 2 ohm rating and price. When I recieved it, it was too tall to fit in the factory box, so I made a cut out from 3/4 ply to shim it out and it worked. It sounds good from a factory stereo system and gives plenty of bass.

Didn't know an 8" sub could sound this good

Written By Kevin H, Aurora, CO on Saturday, March 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a single one of these paired up with a Kicker DX250.1 Mono amp in a sealed box I custom built for my 2002 Chevy Tahoe. Wow!! This thing really shakes. It doesn't come close to my old college system (2 - Kicker Comp 12's). But I'm nearing 40 with a large family and I couldn't justify the amount of space needed for anything bigger than a single 8. My Tahoe has a factory box in the rear and I tried to make this sub work in it, like another reviewer had mentioned worked well. Not even close, I had to do some decent modification just to get it to fit in the box. The sound was horrible because this puppy needs some room to breathe (I think I calculated that the factory box was only 0.36 square feet). So I built a custom box to ideal Kicker sq. ft. recommendations and what a difference. This thing now pounds out the bass like a champ. I imagine it might not sound as good in the trunk of a vehicle, but in an open air vehicle like an SUV, it fills the cabin with a ton of bang for the buck. $60 for the sub, $140 for the amp, about $75 for the wiring kit. A NICE little setup for under $300, exactly what I needed. I strongly recommend this type of setup for someone looking to save space and money in an open air vehicle, but wants some hard hitting bass. Just watch that little sub bounce and you can see and feel the quality that Kicker puts into it's products. I am now building another custom box to fit under the 2nd row seats so when I travel I have more room in back.
Pros:
- Doesn't take up a ton of space - Hits hard - Price
Cons:
None

Graet kick from kicker

Written By Barman84, Fort Worth, TX on Wednesday, February 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this to replace the stock sub in my 2002 yukon that was blown. WOW what a differance this little guy makes in the stock stereo setup is all I can really say. I have had full blown systems that were great but have grown more tame in my 30s well this thing sound somewhere between a 10 in a sealed box or a 12 in an open to me. But to each their own. I love the way it sounds and it adds just the right amount of bass for what I need now.
Pros:
Fit in stock enclosure with a little modification with help from the factory o ring.
Cons:
Non about the speaker. The install was fun I used the stock wooden O ring from the oriniginal speaker and rtv'd it into the enclsoure. Then mounted the new kicker in place after wiring it sticks out of the box but its sealed and it doesn't affect the trim panel at all.

Little insane

Written By Bito808, Honolulu, HI on Sunday, January 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was running the 4 ohm version in my wife's car at 75 watts RMS. It was good, but I felt it could handle more so I ordered the 2 ohm version from Crutchfield. That put it at 150 watts RMS. I shrank my enclosure to .37 cubic feet. The result was insane! The 8" size provided clean bass, massive kick, and had no problem for anything I threw at it! Metallica, DJ Magic Mike, Pink Floyd, Neil Diamond, GNR...whatever you want! There was no bottoming out. I did have to adjust the phase to compliment the rear deck speakers and my cut off frequency was at 80 Hz. They can rumble the car like 12" subs that take up half your trunk, but barely took up any room at all!
Pros:
Very small space consumption, biggest bang for the buck, exceptional power handling and bass output!
Cons:
8" size makes people highly doubt its capability. Bright yellow markings make it noticeable if you're trying to make it stealthy.

Stock Sub Replacement

Written By Ben T, Katy, TX on Sunday, July 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like the previous reviewer, I also used this product to replace the factory 8" sub in my 2002 Tahoe. It was not an exact fit, but I trimmed the outer plastic ring on the sub and it dropped right in. The ring I trimmed did not affect the performance of the speaker and aesthetics was not a factor since it was inside a stock enclosure. Very happy, sounds great! Sounds much better than I ever remember the stock sub sounding.

Good as a replacement for stock sub

Written By ScottyG, Tucson, AZ on Wednesday, July 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock 8" sub in my 2002 Tahoe. Not 100% compatible, but with a little wood baffling made it work. Sound is much better than stock sub, and only being driven by factory amp. Sensitivity is pretty high. Build quality is very good.
