Overview

Our take on the Kicker DS525

You love listening to epic, soul-shaking tunes in your ride, but your factory speakers make every song sound like a 60's garage band. Replace those worn-out speakers with some Kicker DS Series models, and get the performance and reliability you deserve.

You love listening to epic, soul-shaking tunes in your ride, but your factory speakers make every song sound like a 60's garage band. Replace those worn-out speakers with some Kicker DS Series models, and get the performance and reliability you deserve.

The DS525 5-1/4" 2-way speakers use stiff polypropylene cones supported by heavy-duty polyester foam surrounds. The 1/2" balanced dome tweeter belts out the high-frequency details, giving your music energy and ambiance. Don't suffer with bad sound in your car — you'll be amazed at the difference some new speakers can make.

tweeter is good, but woofer is not.

1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these as rear factory upgrade speakers in a 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and am going to upgrade the front to match, just because they sound so good. Great bass for such a small speaker. Clear, crisp mids and highs. Even with the noise of the road. I am an audiophile with realistic expectations.

Pros: easy install small sound great included grills add protection

I am very pleased with these speakers. The price was really good. However they were alittle smaller than the orginial speakers, and the brackets really didn't help. I had to drill holes to make them fit. So that took alittle longer. But for the price and sound, I am pleased.

I am so far pleased with this product. I had a friend install them since I'm not good with that stuff so he suggested I wait at least a day so I don't completely blow them out! haha I can't see any problems thus far, I have a 2001 Nissan Xterra and they sound great! They were simple in install and Crutchfield proved again their reliability.

Pros: Speakers came as described and so great with my vehicle

1995 BMW 325IS
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the size and type, not a bad sound. I kept the stock opening of my '95 325is kick panel intact, except for opening up the factory sound suppression material. I cut the back of that out and shoved some cotton-based batting material to alleviate any echo of the metal frame. That gave it a bit more free air. As far as the bass response goes, I am only pushing about 30 watts as I am using the stock Harmon-Kardon amp. Just don't push this speaker, it's not designed for it.

Pros: For the cost, it's a good upgrade to the factory ones, although, after 17 years, the factory ones were worn out.

Cons: None.

Less low end, much better quality overall

Written by: Drew from Iowa on December 2, 2012

The speakers themselves do seem to have less bass than the ~6in woofer that was factory, but the overall sound quality is much better. Paired w/ the DS46 in the rear, and I have a MUCH better sounding stereo that previously!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the Kicker into my sons 2004 Chevy Silverado. The installation was very smooth other than having the mounting screws go in at an angle on the plactic mounting brackets. To ease this part, you may have to have a pair of Kliens available to clip the screws after mounting the speaker to the plastic brackets. If the screws go sideways, they may keep the brakets from installing into the door properly.

Pros: Sounds great! Ease of installation

Cons: Plastic mounting bracket may allow the screws go in at an angle

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound great comparied to the stock Wrangler speakers. I have a 2003 wrangler and Crutchfield supplied everything for the install which was great an super fast delivery. Took a total of 15mins to install both. These speaker have excellent highs as well. They are in no way shape or form made for bass. If you think you will get bass from a speaker of this size you are mistaken. I have one 12" 100watt sub in the back and my Jeep pounds hard. I listen to basically country, rock, and metal music and all genres sound great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these as an upgrade in a Silverado pickup - door location. Replaced the factory speakers with these and added a new stereo unit. Although these are smaller than the stock speakers by an inch, they are so much more efficient. The boominess is gone. The bass is very there and very tight. the sound can get surprisingly loud with very little pushing the speakers. They installed (with the included adapter) in only a couple of minutes and added so much to the sound. I definitely have no regrets with these speakers

Pros: Very efficient, tight bass, clear - very clear

Cons: None at all

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are good for about a week. After they get worked in the wires that are against the speaker begin to rattle and make a crackling. For kicker to put wires through the cone of the speaker in the first place was a stupid decision. I know i didn't blow the speaker because simply touching the wire to keep it off the cone stops the rattleing and cracking noise. Don't buy these speakers PERIOD. Total waste of money.

Super easy to install. Local shop wanted more money for same speaker. They also wanted $50.00 for install of DS525 and Kicker 4x6's. I installed all four in under 30 minutes. Great improvement over stock. Sound in clean, crisp and loud enough to drown out the road noise in my Wrangler . Web site notes to use original speaker covers on Wrangler sound bar. With a little time, you can install with Kicker supplied grill. Thanks Crutchfield.

Pros: Easy install. Clean sound, look good.

Cons: None yet.

2010 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are ok. They are better than stock which is all I expected. I got what I paid for. Like other comments here, they are lacking some base, but that may have to do with the power and sound tunability of the stock head unit. I planned on just keeping my stock head unit, but now I have the bug to go all the way and get a better, and hopefully more powerful head unit with more ability to fine tune the sound. I do not use an amp, subwoofer and all that. I put one of each of these in the doors of my 2010 Dodge Quad Cab 1500 with KS35s in the corners of the dash. The KS35s are a great compliment to the DS525s. I've been buying from Crutchfield since about 2001. . No one has the customer service Crutchfield has. No on provides all that you need to have the confidence and abilty to do the installation yourself. No one provides all the information you need such as product overview, details and customer reviews while shopping in one place. There's no reason to go anywhere else for your audio needs!

Pros: Great construction. Ok sound. Right price

Cons: Lacking some base, but "the jury is still out."

Nice Speaker

Written by: blake from WI on March 10, 2012

People are buying these speakers and not understanding speakers.....this is a 5 1/4 speaker NOT designed for bass and meant to be used with a sub and especially with the correct filters. You don't want bass from this speaker....that is the point. I fyou want bass and not a sub, then get a bigger speaker. I have used these AND the KS 525's. The KS series are stronger, more natural sounding speaker. The DS series are fine, but I would spend the extra few $ for the KS. Thing is, the DS are probably better with a stock head. The KS can handle way more power than a most stock head units can deliver. Either way, GET A SUB.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a base 2011 Honda Insight which came with only two front speakers. added a pair of 5.5" in the rear doors and 6.5" Kickers in the front. The clarity is much better, but just like the other reviews I have almost non-existent bass with the stock receiver. Looks like I'm going to trash the stock headunit first and then add a sub. I will say the factory speakers delivered some bass, but were a joke up against the Kickers as far as build quality. There basically was no magnet to the factory unit and of course no tweeter. Kicker quality is definitely superior1

Like the title says if you are replacing your factory speakers be prepared to spend more these have 0 for a bass response. These speakers are all highs and no lows you will need a sub set and amp to round out the sound my factory speakers were way better and I. Was really disappointed till I installed the subs. I called crutch field and they say ya replacement speakers are meant to be like that I am of the mindset that if I replaced all my factory speakers it should sound as good if not better than before and you should not have to buy a box and subs to round out your sound.

Pros: They are kickers and sound ok if paired with subs

Cons: All highs and no lows

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money I spent, they aren't bad, and they are much better than the stock speakers I had in my 2011 Honda civic. I've read other reviews and what they say is true, there is absolutely no bass. I guess this is no surprise considering the fact the are 5 1/4" speakers. The thing that really disappoints me is the fact I could have fit 6 1/2" speakers in both the doors and the rear deck if I had taken the time to look at their size instead of assuming the only speakers that would fit were the ones that Crutchfield offered for my particular car. I have now noticed that "outfit my car" says 6 1/2" speakers fit my car. Would have been nice to know this before I ordered the 5 1/2" speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speaker install was a cinch. I was able to download and view the master sheet before my speakers even arrived. This allowed me ample time to remove everything I needed and when the speakers showed up I was ready to install. The speakers themselves perform extremely well for the price, but as many other reviews have said already you will need a sub to get those good lows. The only problem I had was I ordered two sets of these and only received one set of Wire Harnesses and the Universal SAP's. I simply called customer service and before I could even explain the situation they had pulled up my order information by using my phone number and she was asking me if I needed another set of SAP's and Wire Harnesses. By the time I finished saying, "Yes it had only came with one set", she told me she had taken care of it and when I should expect them to come in the mail. The customer service defiantly helped push these speakers to a 5 star rating!

I bought a pair of these speakers to replace my stock speakers in my Chevy Silverado. Wow, was I amazed. The same exact set up was $249.99 at any other audio store. It came with a small amplifier for each speaker along with tweeters. The difference in sound is the crisp. In many songs, bass takes away the ability to hear the words, guitar, or drums in the song. These speakers produce such crisp sounds, that any song will sound like your right in the studio. I also had two 12' kicker comp subwoofers, and I can still hear the music over the bass of my subwoofers. For the price, these speakers are a steal. People will compliment your vehicles new system.

Id like to start off by saying people expect to much, These Are 5.25" speakers and im very satisfied with them. Especially with the deal crutchfield has to offer. and with the free included item's if these are in your budget, and limits I say go for it. My 2000 Cherokee can only fit 5.25's 4 of them. this plus a new pioneer head unit sound sooooo much cleaner than my factory setup. I Think i will definitely get a small sub woofer in the future. but im not aching without it. But my Vw stock speakers have a little more feel to them. Still 5 stars from me. thanks for everything looking forward to future business
