Our take on the Kicker KX700.5

Get ready for Kicker's KX700.5, the comprehensive, space-saving amp that's designed to drive your entire system! While the front four channels keep your front and rear speakers occupied with plenty of juice, the efficient Class D subwoofer section unleashes a clean 200 watts (400 watts at 2 ohms) of power on your sub setup — you get killer bass to go along with rockin' mids and highs.

If sound control is the name of your game, the KX700.5 has you covered. The front four channels feature variable high-pass crossovers (with a low-pass crossover on the sub channel) so you can maximize the performance of all your speakers. And Kicker knows that sometimes you get the low-frequency fever — that's why you can kick in up to a slammin' 18 dB of KickBass at 40 Hz. To make quick adjustments easier, Kicker supplies a remote bass level control that you can mount on your dash.

Even if your receiver doesn't have preamp outputs, you can still get the KX700.5 into your life, thanks to the speaker-level inputs. And, so you can just sit back and enjoy the music, four-way protection circuits help keep the amp out of trouble.

Features

Cosmetics: The amplifier is black and it has a dark gray, removable metal shroud.  Kicker uses the terminology of "Amp 1", " Amp 2" and "Sub Amp" to indicate the channels.

Amplifier Shroud: The amplifier has a metal shroud that must be removed before installation, allowing access to the amplifier's inputs and outputs. Once the amplifier is installed and all the connections are made, you can re-install the shroud to hide the connections on the amplifier, or leave the shroud off to save space. With the shroud removed, the amp has the following dimensions: 19.313"W x 9.548"D x 2.305"H.

Kicker "Living Loud" Certified Power Certificate: The amplifier comes with a certificate that informs you of the total maximum wattage of the particular amplifier, along with the model number, serial number, tested date, and whether the amplifier passed the total harmonic distortion, signal-to-noise ratio, and protection circuit tests.

Speaker-level Inputs:  Two high-level input connections are included to allow use with sources that do not have RCA preamp level outputs.

Built-in Variable Electronic Crossover: There are three built-in crossovers. Two are high-pass crossovers, for Amp 1 and Amp 2, which will allow you to select high-pass frequency cut-offs when the High-pass switches are in the "On" position. In the "Off" position, Amp 1 and Amp 2 will run full range. The other is a low-pass crossover, for the subwoofer. The crossover frequencies for all three crossovers are variable from 50 to 200Hz.

SORT (Short circuit, Over-voltage, Reverse polarity, Thermal) Protection Circuitry: The SORT protection circuitry guards against accidents and undesired operation. The Power LED on the left side of the amp glows green and the power indicator on top of the amp glows red when the amplifier is hooked up correctly and SORT has not been engaged. If the red Protection LED illuminates, SORT has been engaged and the amplifier is in protect mode until the problem is resolved.

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit provides up to 18dB signal boost at 40Hz. Bass boost can be adjusted by using either the control on top of the amplifier or the supplied wired remote.

Remote Bass Level Control: The dash-mounted wired remote unit allows you to adjust the output level of the subwoofer amplifier. The remote control has the following dimensions: 2.199" W x 1.715" D (2.196" including the knob) x 1.186" H.

Class D Amplification: Used in the subwoofer channel. The Class D design allows for delivery of massive power without a large current draw.

Controls

Top of Amplifier:

  • Bass Boost Control for Sub: rotary control that allows you to adjust the bass boost, centered at 40Hz, from 0 to +18dB
  • Sub Gain Control: rotary gain control that allows you to adjust the output level
  • Sub Variable Crossover Frequency Control: allows you to adjust the low-pass crossover frequency from 50-200Hz
  • Gain Control for Amp 1: rotary gain control that allows you to adjust the output level
  • High-pass Variable Crossover Frequency Control for Amp 1: allows you to adjust the crossover frequency from 50-200Hz
  • Gain Control for Amp 2: rotary gain control that allows you to adjust the output level
  • High-pass Variable Crossover Frequency Control for Amp 2: allows you to adjust the crossover frequency from 50-200Hz

Right Side of Amplifier:

  • High-pass Crossover Mode Switch: allows you to select whether the high-pass crossover is "On" or "Off" for Amp 1
  • High-pass Crossover Mode Switch: allows you to select whether the high-pass crossover is "On" or "Off" for Amp 2

Inputs and Outputs

Left Side of Amplifier:

  • 12+ (power): gold-plated screw terminal (terminal is 0.532" wide)
  • REM (remote turn-on): gold-plated screw terminal (terminal is 0.350" wide)
  • GND (ground): gold-plated screw terminal (terminal is 0.532" wide)
  • Fuse: three 30-amp fuses

Right Side of Amplifier:

  • Speaker L and R Outputs: stacked gold-plated screw terminals Amp 1 on top, Amp 2 on bottom (each terminal is 0.350" wide)
  • Amp 1 RCA Input: gold-plated RCA line input jacks
  • Amp 2 RCA Input: gold-plated RCA line input jacks
  • Sub RCA Input: gold-plated RCA line input jacks. Note: It is not necessary for you to use this input in order to engage the sub outs. You only need to use this input if you want to use subwoofer controls that are in your radio.
  • High Level Input Amp 1: Molex plug input for included harness
  • High Level Input Amp 2: Molex plug input for included harness

Wiring Recommendations

Wiring Recommendations: This amplifier uses three 30-amp fuses, so its fuse rating (90-amps total) exceeds that of typical 4 gauge wiring kits, which tend to include a 60-amp fuse. For 90-amp fuse protection, an ANL wafer style fuse is required, but none of the 4-gauge wiring kits include a ANL-style fuse holder. Since pre-packaged amplifier wiring kits cannot be used alone, you may purchase all the necessary items separately, or you may use a pre-packaged 4 gauge wiring kit along with a ANL-style fuse holder and a 100-amp ANL wafer fuse (a 90-amp fuse is not available). If you do not use a wiring kit with the necessary additional items, the separate parts and wiring needed to install this amplifier are as follows:

  • 1 ANL wafer-style fuse holder capable of accepting 4 gauge wire
  • One 100-amp ANL wafer fuse
  • 2 power rings for 4 gauge cable
  • 4 gauge power cable (to connect the battery to a fuse holder and the fuse holder to the amplifier)
  • 4 gauge ground cable
  • Remote turn-on cable (speaker wire can be used as remote turn-on cable)
  • 1 stereo RCA patch cables
  • Speaker wire

Warranty Note

Warranty Note: The warranty on this amplifier is 1 year parts and labor. If installed by an authorized dealer, the warranty is extended to 3 years parts and labor.
