Our take on the Kicker TCVT102

by Dominic Devito
Kicker

Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

Pickup truck owners swear by their vehicles, from sporty compacts to half-ton construction workhorses, but one thing a pickup doesn't provide is a good place to fit a subwoofer. Kicker developed the loaded CompVT enclosure to bring big bass performance to the tight spots in your truck.

The enclosure features Kicker's CompVT 10" thin subwoofer, which provides impressive bass response with its injection-molded polypropylene cone and ribbed Santoprene™ rubber surround, but with a mounting depth of under 4-1/2 inches. The sub's steel basket includes a perimeter venting system that cools the internal parts, so the CompVT will handle up to 400 watts RMS.

The sealed Kicker enclosure houses the sub in medium-density fiberboard, while the black and gray carpet covering and emblazoned Kicker logo give the box style for miles. You'll be impressed by how much premium bass can come from an enclosure that measures under 7 inches deep and fits right behind the seat of your pickup.

Highlights:

  • sealed truck-style enclosure with one 10" CompVT subwoofer
  • 3/4" medium density fiberboard construction covered with gray and black carpet
  • 2-ohm total impedance
  • power handling: 50-400 watts RMS (800 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 25-350 Hz
  • sensitivity: 97 dB
  • 19-5/8"W x 11-5/8"H x 6-3/4"D1 x 3-7/8"D2
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

Enclosure: The Kicker TCVT10 subwoofer sealed-enclosure is specially designed to stand up to harsh automotive environments. The enclosure is made of advanced material and construction techniques to maintain optimal performance for years to come. The inside of the enclosure is computer-modeled and human fine-tuned to offer a high level of bass performance. The box is covered with durable black and grey carpeting.

Mounting: The Kicker TCVT10 enclosure is made to fit behind the seat of a pickup truck, coupe or wherever space is limited and is engineered to provide the best bass response when firing into the back of the seat. The box comes supplied with 4 mounting plates to help secure it in place.

Clearance Plate: The reason the TCVT10 enclosure is slim and can fit in tight places is because of a thin metallic Clearance Plate that allows room for the mounted woofers massive magnet and motor structure.

Wiring: The Kicker TCVT10 enclosure is internally wired for a 2 ohm load at the speaker-wire connection terminal. The enclosure's silver-plated, spring loaded, binding posts are located on the left-hand side of the box an can accept 12-gauge speaker wire.

Woofer: The Kicker TCVT10 enclosure uses a front-firing 10" CompVT subwoofer for loud, pounding bass.

  • Cone: The cone is a modified spoke cone design which helps it fit in this very slim enclosure. The ultra high performance injection molded polypropylene cone remains rigid and minimizes cone flex, lowering harmonic distortion. Distortion in the cone is further reduced with 360° back bracing.
  • Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.
  • Basket and Motor Assembly: The high-strength steel basket features a low-profile open design, and provides a solid foundation for the precision-aligned motor assembly. Perimeter venting relieves pressure under the spider, supports a linear excursion, and helps dissipate heat from the voice coil and motor structure.
  • Tinsel Leads: CVT subwoofers use Spiraled tinsel-lead technology, which allows the ideal amount of flex for better strength and durability. The tinsel lead wires are woven into the spider to relieve mechanical stress.

Break-in Period: Due to the complex nature of Kicker Comp VT speakers, they require a break-in period in order to produce optimum low-bass response. The high-performance suspension system makes the speaker very stiff out-of-the-box. Approximately 2 weeks of daily playing will allow the suspension to break-in and reach its optimum equilibrium. A broken-in subwoofer will exhibit stronger bass performance, smoother response, and greater low-bass extension.

Can not go wrong with Kicker!

Written By jeff, Austin, TX on Sunday, April 05, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My setup: 2006 Ford F150 CrewCab KingRanch. I had a stock radio with a 4ch line converter and pioneer GM 6300 4 ch amp pushing infinity 5X7s. Sounded just so/so with little bass. I bought the KickerTCVT102, and a pioneer DM7400 mono amp. I also installed a pioneer DEH-P4000UB deck w/HD radio. What a difference! This sub fits snuggly under the center of the rear seat, the seat still closes down, and the sub does not stick out past the seat. This sub sounds great with rock, country, and even hip hop. As usual, Crutchfield has great service, fast delivery, and detailed instructions. I have installed about 10 systems over the years and this one was fairly easy. The only thing I left out was wiring in my stock steering wheel radio controls because the only option is to splice into factory wiring which I like to avoid so that I can quickly put the stock radio back in if I decide to sell the vehicle.

Small space, Big sound

Written By Justin, Guam on Monday, December 22, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I picked this Sub up after reading the all the reviews, I put it in a 2003
Eclipse with an after market Kenwood KDC-MP538U Receiver and a Profile
HA700M amp. This sub thumps!!! If you are tight for space this is the right
size sub. I know I didn't want to give up all my hatchback space and this fit
right in there behind the rear seats. If it was a half inch shorter I could
have mouted it on the cross beam in the back of the hatch up under the
security cover, but as it is it is bolted to the hatch side of the beam. Still, I
have plenty of room for the golf clubs. I would recomend this to anyone. At
least with the amp combination I have. 2 ohm amp, 2 ohm sub.

The perfect subwoofer

Written By Ismael, Lanham, Md on Friday, November 14, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just like I imagined, my subwoofer fitted under the back bench seat in my 2000 F-150 super cab. I can still use all space in the back for my family, and the best of all its the bass, Iam very satisfied with my purchased. The 400 watts RMS from the 10" Kicker its more than enough, inside my truck with all doors, windows closed, I don't think I can handle more than that.

Not good for the trunk

Written By frank, CA on Friday, August 08, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put this kicker sub and truck box in the trunk of my 2007 Toyota Avalon. I want my bass but need to have room for family getaways. After a week a tuning and breaking in the woofer, the sub output in the car was barely noticeable. Even though the Avalon comes with a stock sub, I expected adding this subwoofer and my amp giving it 500 watts RMS would make a noticeable difference and it didn't. I believe box is best suited for "in-cabin" applications: SUVs, trucks and hatchbacks only. Being sealed and in the trunk, it doesn't play low enough or loud enough to fill the cabin with the sound most people are looking for. However the sub sounded good outside the car with the trunk open.

Kicker TCVT102

Written By Anonymous, Fargo, ND on Sunday, March 16, 2008

I just installed this sub in my 04 F150 Supercrew with a stock head unit
hooked to a Alpine MRP-M450 amp. Fits perfectly and sounds great best
mod I have done and just shy of five hundred dollars with all the wiring and
line converter I think a good deal. You will not be disappointed with this
little sub.

Tight Bass

Written By Luke, Clarksville, TN on Tuesday, March 04, 2008

I bought two of these for my crew cab 2002 Silverado and am using a profile 2ch amp. (For the price, check out the specs on the profile series amps!!) These speakers do very well matched up with Infinity Kappas Components up front and three ways in the rear for fill sound (and a Profile 4ch amp) in all four doors and an Alpine CDA-9855 head unit. These are well matched and produce excellent bass from Beethoven to Bass Mechanics. Use the Autosound 2000 cd set to fine-tune everything and you're set.

Written By Chi, Charleston, WV on Tuesday, February 19, 2008

This sub fits UNDER the back seat of and 07 Tundra. I have 300 watts RMS going into it from an Eclipse Class D amp. The bass is clean and tight. Excellent purchase for it's compact size.

Your Best Bet for a Bass Upgrade

Written By ranger18, San Rafael,CA on Friday, July 27, 2007

If your looking for a total bass upgrade and you don't have a lot of room in your car, this subwoofer is the way to go. This sub packs so much bass for such a small space. I am powering it using an Alpine MRP-M450 mono sub amp, and believe me...there's soooo much power. Kicker is the way to go if you want loads of bass. GO KICKER!!

Kicker TCVT102

Written By Randy, Chatham, VA on Saturday, April 14, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this only after I spent money getting a box made with 2 8" Kicker subs. This is the way to go if you have a compact regular cab truck like my 86 nissan hardbody. I used a Alpine mono amp to power it and the bass was amazing. I lose some legroom but it's worth it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just got this sub/box package & wow! I am impressed with the bass this thing puts out.

I installed this in a regular cab chevy and didnt have to move the seat forward any at all.

I'm running this with the Kicker ZX300.1 & it more than pushes this sub.
