Product Research

Features

Overview: This antenna is a convenient, stylish replacement for a normal FM dipole antenna supplied with most receivers. As with any indoor antenna, it will not function as well as and is not recommended for use as an outdoor FM antenna.

Dual-Drive Amplifier (DDA) Circuitry: Captures radio signals and minimizes noise in an FM signal with a two-stage amplifier before boosting broadcast frequencies for less noise.

Advanced Capture Circuitry (ACC): Enhances reception sensitivity which helps lock onto signals in crowded areas. It also helps improve reception of lower powered signals.

Controls: The only control is a black thumb wheel that is used to adjust FM amplification (from 0 to +29dB amplification).  There is a red LED on the bottom front portion of the unit which glows more brightly as amplification is increased.

Connections

  • "F"-Type: The antenna is fitted with an attached 6' antenna cable terminated by a push-on "F"-type connector.
  • AC Power: The AC adapter can either be left plugged in (constant power will not hurt the unit and there is little electrical consumption), or it can be powered to a receiver's switched AC output, if available.

Specifications

  • Frequency Range: FM 88-108MHz
  • Reception Pattern: Omni-directional, 360°
  • FM Amplifier Gain Range: 0 to +29 dB
  • FM Output Impedance: 75-ohms

Customer Q&A

Q
I just received this today. As the red light increased, the worse the signal became. When I dialed it back to no red at all, the signal is about the cleanest I have heard in years. Could someone explain why that would be? I am very happy with the clean signal, just curious why no red is cleaner.
richard  Nov 21, 2023

A
The gain knob being turned up doesn't necessarily mean a cleaner signal, Richard. If you are very close to the radio signal, lowering the gain may have a greater effect and seems to be the correct settings for your situation. I am happy to hear you are getting a clean picture with the Terk FM Edge!

Q
will this work in a steel building with a steel roof and walls?
fred j  Aug 22, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Fred, and thank you for your question. With steel roofs, and or walls there will always be a interruption with an antenna signal. The best people to ask this question would be the staff at Terk. Their number is 800-645-4994.

Q
I am picking up a second channel (music station) on an FM (news station) radio signal. The tall, skinny Terk antenna and others I have tried weren't able to eliminate the interfering channel. The transmitter is relatively close to my location. Could this antenna select for only the primary signal?
livie  Mar 05, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Liv, and thank you for your question. This is just an antenna, your stereo is the tuner that selects the channels. There is a amplification control on the Terk, possibly turn it to a lower amplification, see if that may help.

Q
Will this work on a Sony STR-DH 190 receiver?
john  Jan 13, 2023
1 answer
A
This will not work with the Sony sadly, John. The Terk has a more common F-type push on coaxial connection that you see on a wide variety of receivers. The Sony has a special clip type connection, and we do not have an upgraded AM/FM antenna that will work well with the Sony. The Onkyo in the link below mirrors the core features of the Sony and has the coaxial AM/FM antenna connection so it could be an upgrade contender. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_580TX8220/Onkyo-TX-8220.html

Should be fine if you keep in, or near as possible, to a window.
eugene  May 09, 2022

There is a nearby FM station that I like. I am on the fringe of their broadcast radius, and the signal is weak. I bought the Terk to try to improve that reception. There was a mild improvement, although nothing amazing. At the least, the Terk is more compact than the wire antenna that was supplied with my receiver. Overall, I am glad that I bought it, but my situation is very different from that of Steeldude.

I don't have block walls, but I love the antenna. Cruchfield has a very good return policy, so you should be safe

I think it is a crap shoot. I get better reception with it than anything else I've tried but still get far better FM reception in my car than in my home hooking this up to a Denon Receiver.
charles  May 05, 2022
A
I honestly cannot answer that. I have mine connected to my stereo receiver and close to a window. It works fine for my needs. I am not sure whether in a blocked walls situation just how it will perform for you. If it doesn't work you can always return it!

Q
Does it have a 3.5mm plug in for a bose wave radio?
bodean  Jan 29, 2022
1 answer
A
The Terk FM Edge includes two types of connections: The "F"-Type push-on connector and a bare wire adapter. It does not include an adapter for a 3.5mm connection.

Station's transmitter I wanted is about 5 miles away, on a hillside, with lots of buildings, etc., in between. Previously used the wire antenna that came with the receiver without luck. The Terk now brings in clear stereo reception.

I live on the south side of Venice FL, and can receive FM from Ft Myers, approx 60 miles- except when the sun is at the wrong angle spring and fall. I also try to reach another station in the Tampa area, listed at 73 miles. I don't have distances to their antennas, but since I'm on the south side of Venice, it's probably further. The Tampa station is rarely available on this tuner/antenna combo.

I have a Topaz SR20 stereo receiver that .... within the specs ... calls for an outdoor antenna. However, don't see Crutchfield offering an antenna of this type for purchase?

I bought this item from Crutchfield a while back. I had one station I liked but my Sangean HD radio wouldnt pick it up. Bought this unit and found if I placed it in my living room window it comes in great. Then I bought a car version for my boat. That one worked great also.
bruce  Jul 24, 2020

To the best of my knowledge, Crutchfield does not offer full sized outdoor antennas. I purchased a Terk indoor antenna from them more than a year ago but found it to be wanting, especially in areas of weak FM reception. It will do fine if you have a number of stations in close proximity, however. An outdoor antenna is the best bet for good all around reception. Go on line and google "outdoor FM antennas" and you will find various vendors. Keep in mind that an outdoor antenna takes more time and effort to Install. Your receiver should be compatible with with type of antenna.

I had a similar situation and ended up purchasing the Terk FM Edge antennae from Crutchfield. It does a very nice job of picking up FM Stations from 30 - 90 miles away and allowing me to listen to them with a much cleaner signal. I for one think this is a worthwhile investment.
brian  Jul 23, 2020

For most people outdoor antennas are not practical. I have used the Terk FM antenna on my Marantz receiver for a couple of years and have found that it works well. It is much better than wire antennas and offers a nice appearance. Unless you live in an area with poor reception you will find this antenna will satify your FM reception needs.

If your receiver has connections for an FM antenna it will work. Check your manual or examine the rear of your Sony receiver. I have a Marantz receiver and mine works graet!

richard  Dec 05, 2018

It all depends how far away you are from the broadcast antenna. I am about 35 miles outside of Philadelphia and the Terk helps to pull in some of the weaker stations, but only marginally. Some of the local stations don't need the Terk, the cheap dipole antenna that came with your Sansui would do just fine in this situation. I'd recommend you start there before you spend money that might not be necessary on a Terk.

Q
Had a crappy boom for years and got radio reception. Changed to a system with a receiver in the same location and now have no reception no matter what antenna I have tried. I have only tried the antenna from local retailer with zero results. I have a nice Bose speaker system and would love to listen to the radio rather than cd's all the time. Any ideas?

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This Terk product should do very well for you. For the most part, the reviews have been outstanding on it and should be an upgrade over a standard antenna. If you get absolutely no reception at all, it might be an issue with the antenna input on the back of your receiver. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
