Jennys Rear View Camera

Written By Jen, Alexandria Virginia on Monday, March 07, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit came damaged. The screen had internal bruises on it. The part of the screen that I see works fine. However because it is wireless it has a lot of static. And the screen is very altered. You got to make sure you are looking in your rear view mirror too. I give the experience a C-

A good buy

The camera and screen work great. Is real clear. We hooked it up so it only comes on
when the vehicle is in reverse. The screen does blink once or twice when it first comes
on but has a real good picture.

not for big trucks

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I found that this unit works well with smaller cars however, I drive a big truck. The distance from the bumper to the dash is about 12 feet. The moniter shakes and is not easy to see. I tried this on my wifes car and it works great. overall it is a good value however just not for big trucks.

Good product and price but some lows.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I drove the car, the monitor would remain on and flicker, picking up signals from all over the neighborhood. If you can imagine this occuring at night, it is VERY distracting. I ended up hardwiring the monitor to the reverse light signal so that it would only turn on when the car was put into reverse. The product documentation warns that this can occur.

The screen size is small. I mounted it above the rear view mirror because the objects in the monitor are similar in size to the objects in the rear view mirror. If I had mounted the monitor on the dash, I think it would be a little to small to be useful; especially for older people.

Toss the included tape if you plan to hang or vertical mount the monitor. Mine fell off after a day in the sun. Use 3M emblem tape instead.

I mounted the rear view camera on the upper portion of the license plate. The camera does not have vertical adjustment but it is angled slightly downward. However, it is not enough in my case (2004 Lexus RX330). While the view in this configuration is better than nothing, there is still a blind spot approximately 2 feet behind the car.

The camera housing is a little big and not inconspicuous

+ Cheaper than other camera/monitor systems
+ Relatively simple installation

- Monitor size is small
- No angle adjustment on camera
- Included double sided tape is weak for vertical/hang mounting
- Camera housing is a bit large
- Must be hardwired

Not satisfied

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was very simple and fast. Camera worked fine at initial test. With engine (Cummins diesel) running, unit flickers and was not possible to align ball with trailer hitch without waiting for a clear picture. The monitor was hardwired to the reverse lights. For me, I had to get very close to the small monitor in order to see the ball and hitch alignment clearly.

Back Up with ease

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was very easy to install.( 2008 Toyota Tundra Crew) Directions were clear ..... back up lamp connections were "ok" .. Mounting tape for camera base is "ok" doesn't not like vertical mounting on front of dash, could be 'hot' weather. Picture is crystal clear and provides a "broad" view. Very satisfied with the operation of this product.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought for the wifes car. She loves it. The only problem I had was that the camera filled with rain water. Couldn't get any help on the problem, so I had to order another one. I will have to take the old one apart and try to seal it better.

Great for SUVs and Trucks!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this unit with ease into a 2010 Toyota Tundra Pickup. Very smooth install, awesome clarity on the screen. As an installer and car audio shop owner, I strongly recommend this to anyone with an SUV or oversized truck. We were able to shave about an hour off of the overall install time, utilizing this product. Will be recommending this to my cost-aware clients from now on!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

well worth the small price , night vision is awesome can see like daylight in pitch black , screen is perfect for placing up high beside rear view mirror . Because its wireless it flickers but if you rig up the wiring to come on in reverse only it works just fine , has plenty of wire in the kit . Only wish the chrome bolts that came in kit didnt rust so easy .

Super value backup camera

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed on 2009 RAM 1500 quad cab. An awesome value. Instead of $400 on a Toyota or a few thousand bucks of option bundles to get a backup camera from auto dealers, for this price, this is a cheap, simple, incredibly easy to install option. The wireless signal occasionally flickers when off when using included cigarette lighter adapter (nice extra), but that should go away when I hard wire it.
The screen is a little small for my 57 year old eyes, but that is more than compensated for by the price!

Works Great!

Written By Chris, Orlando Fl. on Tuesday, June 09, 2009

I installed it on a 4Runner. The camera is made out of metal compared to the last one I had was plastic, it also has IR LED's in it to help you see better at night, and the others do not. You mount the camera on the same bolts as the license plate, the power wires run to the white back up light. This was a little bit of work because of my tailgate but I just ran them through the grommet that held the other wires. Hook up the power wire and the ground for the camera and your done. Took about 45 mins to get this part done. The monitor has the ability to mount anywhere because the base swivels, I put it up next to my rear view mirror. No one can see it from outside either so less of a chance of theft. The last one I had came with a stand it fit into and a flat bottom base; I never found a good spot to mount it. There is a cigarette lighter adapter included and a hard wire kit. I hard wired it into the ignition; I didn't want the cord hanging down. Note: the kit comes with a 25 foot power wire and a note. Wireless cameras get interference from other things on 2.4 GHz. So they say if you're in an area like the city to run a power lead from the tail light to the monitor, this way it will only come on when the backup light is on.They also say this is for Cars and SUV's not really long campers or trailers. I realize I saved a ton of money over buying a hard wired system. The install took about 1 ½ hours, but if I could do it then I am sure you can.

Product Research

Overview: The Audiovox ACA250 Wireless Rear Observation System is designed to assist the driver by providing a clear and wide image of the area behind the vehicle whenever the vehicle is shifted into reverse. The package includes a camera that mounts to your rear license plate and a dash-mounted 2.5" color LCD monitor. The system operates on a 2.4 GHz wireless transmission system for sending the images from the camera to the monitor. No signal cables are needed, however, both the camera and monitor must be connected to a 12-volt power supply.

Monitor: The ACA250 monitor has a 2.5" LCD color display with LED backlighting, and a resolution of 960 x 234. It has an adjustable base, which can attached to the dash by the supplied dual-sided tape. It can be powered by the supplied cigarette lighter adapter or hardwired to the vehicle using the supplied wiring harness. Other monitor specifications are:

  • Brightness: 400 cd/m²
  • Contrast Ratio: 150:1
  • Backlight Life: 10,000 hours
  • Video Format: NTSC/PAL
  • Display Format: 16:9
  • Dimensions: W=3.199", H=3.07", D=1.574"

Camera: The rear view camera is mounted in a waterproof and weatherproof aluminum housing that attaches to your vehicle's license plate. The camera has a wide-angle 110° view. For low-light situations, the camera automatically switches to Night Vision Assisted Mode, and turns on its six infrared LEDs. In this mode, the picture looks more monochrome. The camera needs to be connected to the vehicle's Reverse lights which causes the camera to come on only when the vehicle is in Reverse gear. Dimensions: W=7.924", H=1.215", D=1.328"

Wireless Transmission: The camera transmits the image of the area behind the vehicle on the 2.4 GHz frequency. The monitor remains in Sleep Mode until it receives a video signal from the camera. The monitor automatically adjusts for color, brightness, and contrast for either daytime or nighttime viewing. It is possible for the monitor to receive signals from other wireless cameras in the area operating in the 2.4 GHz range, such as security cameras, baby monitors, or even other backup cameras.
