Our take on the Code Alarm CA1151

by Ken Nail
Code Alarm

We offer vehicle-specific interfaces that you'll need to complete your car security installation. Please identify your vehicle as we review every order to make sure you've got everything you need.

Your new car may have a keyless entry remote, but does that mean you've got a security system built in as well? Odds are you don't. And even if you have a factory-installed security system, very few of them include an impact sensor — an essential feature if you want to stop a thief from smashing a window and taking what they want.

Code Alarm's CA1151 keyless entry and security system protects your car and its contents with an impact sensor and more, and gives you the convenience of remote door locking. The system includes:

  • a dual-stage magnetic shock sensor that detects unauthorized tampering;
  • a powerful 125 dB weatherproof siren;
  • two metal-clad remote controls;
  • remote door lock and unlock;
  • a starter interrupt feature which shuts down ignition during unauthorized use.

Ignition-activated doorlocks, carjacking protection, and automatic/last-door rearming provide additional reassurance. The CA1151 also features an override switch for valet parking, while the "silent choice" feature allows you to arm and disarm your car alarm without disturbing your neighbors. You can expand your protection even more by adding an optional sensor to the auxiliary input.

And here's another great feature. Everyone knows how hard it can be to find your vehicle in a crowded parking lot. The car-finding feature will sound your alarm at low volume so you can find your car more quickly.

Important Note:
We offer an interface that can save you lots of time when you install a Code Alarm system in most vehicles. For a limited time, you can save $40 on the interface if purchased with this Code Alarm system. Chat or call us at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the interface will work with your vehicle.

Alarm Features

Overview: The Code-Alarm CA1151 Vehicle Security and Keyless Entry System, a part of the Professional Series line, will protect your vehicle and its contents, and can remotely lock or unlock your doors. It comes with two remotes.

Remotes: The CA1151 comes with two 1-way, 4-button remote transmitters (CATX-MT). The remotes operate at 433 MHz with additional SAW filtering to give you excellent range with less RF interference. The remotes have four buttons for lock, unlock, vehicle locator/panic mode, and trunk release. Each requires one CR2016 battery (installed). Additional remotes (up to a total of 4) can be programmed to operate the alarm.

Data Bus Interface (DBI) Port: The alarm's control module has a 4-pin Data Bus Interface (DBI) port, which allows you to plug in an optional FlashLogic Transponder/Door Lock/Remote Start Interface (item # 220FLCAN) directly into the system. These modules, compatible with many late model vehicles, can save considerable installation time by eliminating the need to find and splice various wires within the vehicle. Typical connections that are made with the interfaces include tachometer, brake, door locks, and ignition/starter.

Note: Even with the interface, there will be some required splicing into your vehicle's factory wiring.

125dB Siren: The CA1151 includes a siren which emits a single tone pattern at 125dB, which is equal to the threshold of pain in humans. Its compact size (2-3/4" footprint diameter, 3-3/8" horn diameter) gives you additional mounting flexibility. The weatherproof design keeps the siren operating flawlessly in the harsh, under hood environment.

Silent Choice: The Silent Choice feature allows you to control the arm/disarm chirps from the remote control. The system default is with Silent Choice enabled, which requires a second press of the "lock" button to activate an audible arming response from the vehicle.

Active/Passive Operation: The system can be programmed for passive or active arming and door locking. Active arming/locking requires the use of the remote to arm the system or to lock the doors. When programmed for passive operation, the doors lock and the system is armed automatically 1 minute after the last door is closed.

Delayed Arming: For vehicles with a delayed dome light, the system can be programmed to delay arming up to 60 seconds after the lock button is pressed. Once programmed, the system will learn the timing of the dome light delay and add 2 seconds before arming.

Door Locks/Trunk Release: The alarm can lock and unlock the vehicle's doors using the remotes. The alarm can be wired to work with positive or negative switching locks, reverse polarity, and positive or negative multiplexed door locks. Two door lock relays are built into the system. In addition to unlocking and locking the doors, the system can also open the vehicle's trunk or hatch.

Two-stage Door Unlock: The alarm's door lock function can be set to operate in two stages. The driver's door only is unlocked with one press of the unlock button. A second press of the button within 3 seconds will unlock the remaining doors.

Shock Sensor: The included dual-stage magnetic shock sensor will respond with a warning chirp when there is a light impact to the vehicle. Harder impacts will fully trigger the alarm. You can bypass the shock sensor for one arm cycle, and will default back to normal operation the next time the system is armed. The shock sensor's sensitivity can be adjusted if needed.

Starter Interrupt Output: When the alarm is triggered, the system will disable the vehicle by interrupting the circuit to the starter via a relay. As long as the system is in alarm mode, the vehicle's engine cannot be started, preventing a possible theft. The relay needed to install this feature is included with the alarm.

Personal Protection Alarm Mode: The alarm's Personal Protection or Panic Mode will activate an alert when you press and hold the panic button continually for three seconds. The transmitter's normal functions are suspended during panic mode, except to allow you to lock or unlock the doors. You can manually shut off the alarm with the transmitter, or the system will automatically stop after 30 seconds.

Real Panic Sound (RPS): During panic and alarm trigger modes, the horn and/or siren will sound in a randomized pattern. This draws more attention to the vehicle that alarms without this feature.

Progressive Car Find: To assist you in locating your vehicle in a crowded parking lot, the Progressive Car Find feature will sound the alarm and/or honk the horn five times at low volume. If you have not located the vehicle, the system will repeat the action at increasingly higher volumes (low, medium, high) with each press of the button.

Carjack Mode: The CA1151 features a Carjack mode, which must be turned on in system programming. The Carjack mode provides a delayed and progressive alarm response, starting with siren chirping, to full alarm with flashing parking lights, to starter kill activation, rendering the vehicle disabled.

Auxiliary Output: The alarm features an auxiliary output to operate optional accessories such as power windows or sunroof, or a powered sliding door. This 500mA output is capable of driving relays, and can be programmed to operate in various timing configurations (i.e. push and hold, latched, latched until ignition on, etc.).

Accessories

FlashLogic Interface Module: The optional FlashLogic Databus Interface Module (220FLCAN) communicates with your vehicle's Databus to provide plug-in capability for various functions of the Code-Alarm security system. Typical functions include tach input, door trigger, dome light supervision, factory alarm arm/disarm, trunk/hatch open, diesel glow plug input, remote start, and factory keyless entry controls. Compatibility and available functions vary depending upon year, make, and model of vehicle.

Note: Before installing, the FlashLogic module will need to be configured for your specific vehicle via web-update. Some splicing into factory wiring will be required.

Dual-Zone Microwave Sensor: The optional Code-Alarm Dual-Zone Microwave Sensor (item # 220MV3) detects movement through a protected area, such as someone trying to reach inside your vehicle. It has two detection zones, exterior and interior. When the exterior field is penetrated, the alarm emits a series of warn-away tones. When the interior zone is penetrated, the alarm goes into full alert. The unit should be mounted in the interior of the vehicle, near the center.

Note: The MV-3 microwave sensor includes a Y-adapter harness, designed to connect both the MV-3 and the shock sensor included with the alarm to the single shock sensor port on the alarm. However, the Y-adapter will not fit the port on the included shock sensor, so that part of the adapter must be cut off and hardwired to the shock sensor's harness.

Universal Transponder Interface (UTI): The optional Universal Transponder Interface (UTI) works with vehicles that use an "immobilizer" key system, allowing you to operate the alarm system without interfering with the vehicle's anti-theft features. The UTI works with vehicles that have a transponder or RF-based immobilizer, including the GM Passkey systems.

Digital Tilt Sensor: The optional Code-Alarm DUB1 digital tilt sensor (220DUB1) can detect when the angle of your vehicle changes and trigger the alarm to protect you from tow trucks and tire or wheel thieves. After you have parked your vehicle, the DUB1 has a digital self-leveling feature to determine the angle of your parked vehicle. If that angle changes due to the vehicle being jacked up or towed, it will trigger a full alarm in the security system.

Door Lock Actuators: Power door locks can be added to a vehicle with manual door locks with a Door Lock Actuator, enabling you to lock/unlock your doors with the CA1151's keyless entry feature. A Standard 2-wire Door Lock Actuator (item # 220DA1) is available for normal manual door locks. For cable-driven door locking systems, a Motor Clutch-type Door Lock Actuator (item # 220DA2) and a Cable Kit (item # 220CLBK) will be needed. You will need an actuator for each door you want to control.

1-way Remote Transmitter: Up to 4 remote transmitters can be used with the CA1151 security system. Additional CATX-MT 1-way 4-button remotes (220CATXMT) can be purchased and programmed to operate your system.

Good alarm but the instructions are lame

Written By Anonymous, Mesa,AZ on Saturday, June 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the alarm then received an email from Crutchfield that the door locks would either need additional relays or a FLCAN module in order for the power locks to work. I ordered the additional module. When the parts arrived the install instructions for the FLCAN module were terrible so I called Crutchfield tech support and after 15 mins talking to a good rep he determined that the additional module was not needed to install the alarm and told me how to wire the door locks to the alarm with no additional parts. Alarm works perfectly, awesome tech support from Crutchfield. This was not my first purchase from Crutchfield nor will it be my last. The alarm was installed in a 2001 Chevy Silverado.
Pros:
Great tech support, good alarm that works as advertised
Cons:
Instructions leave alot to be desired but Crutchfield support will help if needed

Looks like good product, but intructions YUCK!

Written By Virg, Rio Rancho, NM on Monday, May 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alarm seems a good budget alarm. Some confusion on if I needed an extra module to adapt it to the vehicle, but called tech at Audiovox (Vox is the owner/maker of Code alarm) and they verified that I did not. Remotes are small and not bulky in the pocket. Buttons large enough and easy to use. Not long installed, but so far unit seems to work well. Mounted the shock sensor to the vent duct under the dash on my 1st gen Tacoma and gives a good setting so far right out of the box. One thump with my hand on the truck bed side and it chirps, do it again and it goes off. BIGGEST ISSUE WITH THIS IS THE HORRIBLE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!! Taked to Crutchfield and Vox a few times as some wires you do not need to use, but it does not tell you this. You use one or the other depending on circuit. Also, if you do not have power door locks and are putting in actuators for door locks they do not cover this. Instructions only cover hooking to existing power door locks. Be aware. Ignition cut out relay supplied has no instructions what so ever in the manual. Crutchfield tech had to write them out and email them to me. Without this hooked in, if someone sets the alarm off they can still get in and start the truck. You need it hooked in to interrupt the starter circuit so they can't. Also, accessory glass break sensor that is listed available for it does not have a plug in on the module. You have to jump wire it in with an extra diode. Alarm seems good, install instructions are AWFUL!!!
Pros:
Remotes seems solid and are small for pocket with good size buttons Works as advertised so far Good budget alarm that gives features like an OE alarm would
Cons:
Terrible install instructions, vague, things left out, be prepared to call the very helpful Crutchfield tech Glass break accessory showing available has to be rigged in with the shock sensor wires and a diode (according to tech) Oh, did I say how poor the install instructions were???

Review on Code Alarm CA1151

Written By B Mase, Houston, TX on Monday, May 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am now an avid Code Alarm fan. This unit is very nice and the instructions are clear. I would recommend this product to anyone in the market for a car alarm. If you are self installing make sure you are well versed in your cars wiring color descriptions. The remotes have very good range but the button material isn't overly ideal.
Pros:
Very nice remotes, the alarm is dependable and crutchfield provides great customer service if needed.
Cons:
Make sure you shop around first.

Not bad at all

Written By alorman, Washington, DC on Thursday, March 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's quite functional, especially for the money. It does work as described. The instruction manuals are a bit opaque and you generally have to take half the car apart to install it. So be prepared for that. That said, Crutchfield absolutely could not have been more helpful in installing and had people know were EXTREMELY knowledgeable even on a Sunday!
Pros:
Works, Cheap, Attractive clickers
Cons:
Difficult to install, opaque directions

Nice product BUT....

Written By Ricky, SAN ANTONIO on Monday, December 26, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

not a bad system but instruction did not give enough step by step on how to hook it up.
Pros:
Works well in my 85 K30.it comes with plenty of wire to hide the brain where it would be hard for someone to get to to disable
Cons:
Instruction r not clean how to hook up the starter interrupt or how to use the relays for the starter interrupt. Had no support over the weekend from coda alarm they r only there on the weekdays had to get help from an local alarm install here in town who walk me through it.

Code Alarm CA1151

Written By Jamie Ramirez, Honolulu, HI on Thursday, May 26, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this alarm on May 10th, and received it super fast and installed it that weekend. I put this in my original condition 1987 Monte Carlo SS mainly for the auto-matic door lock control. I was pleased to find that Crutchfield was very helpful in steering my in the right direction on this buy. The install took me about 2-3 hours and was quite pleased with the tech support. It has a bright blue LED display that is great. I also llke the fact that it arms and disarms silent if the alarm was not triggered. No dissappoinments with this one. I certainly would buy this alarm again. As always, the Crutchfield team did an outstanding job from the advisors to tech support. I certainly will continue to use Crutchfield for all my electronic needs. Mahalo and Aloha!
