Features

Overview: The XM SkyDock allows you to receive XM Satellite Radio in your vehicle, using your iPhone or iPod touch. The XM SkyDock has a built-in XM Satellite Radio tuner which is controlled by your docked iPod touch or iPhone, using the free XM SkyDock App available from the Apple App store. The XM SkyDock then transmits the XM Satellite Radio audio to your vehicle's stereo system via its built-in FM transmitter or your headunit's auxiliary input (if applicable). The XM SkyDock will also charge the battery of your iPod touch or iPhone while docked, as long as the dock is receiving power from your vehicle. In addition, you can listen to any music or audio application stored on your iPod or iPhone through your vehicle's stereo system using the XM SkyDock.

Note: Apple iPod and iPhone sold separately.

XM Satellite Radio: The XM SkyDock requires an XM Satellite Radio subscription. XM Satellite Radio offers a great variety of programming such as commercial free music of almost any genre (Pop, Rock, Dance, Hip-Hop, R&B, Country, Christian, Jazz, Blues, Classical, Latin), sports (MLB, NHL, college games, PGA tour), talk radio (NPR), comedy (Laugh Attack, The Foxxhole), news (CNN, CSPAN, CNBC, BBC), and entertainment (Oprah, Cosmo). XM Radio provides superior digital sound quality coast-to-coast. XM also offers instant traffic and weather alerts for 21 major US cities.

Note: . You can also add "The Best of SIRIUS"' to enjoy premium channels from the SIRIUS lineup.

XM SkyDock APP: A free XM SkyDock application is required and available for download from the Apple App Store for your iPod touch or iPhone.

Interchangeable: The XM SkyDock App on your iPod touch or iPhone is not linked to a specific dock. You can use your iPod touch or iPhone in any XM SkyDock as long as that dock has an active XM subscription. All of your personal settings, including your Favorites list, Tagged Songs, Sports and Stock Tickers, will follow your iPod touch or iPhone to any other XM SkyDock.

Note: Some channels available on your XM SkyDock may not be available on a different dock, if it does not have the same subscription package as the original. The available channels are controlled by the subscription package of the XM SkyDock.

iPod/iPhone Compatibility: The XM SkyDock is made for Apple iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd/4th generation) and iPhone (3G/3GS/4/4S). iPod touch and iPhone models require iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the device and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until an newer software update is available.

iPhone Capability: If you leave your iPhone in the XM SkyDock when you answer the call, the phone audio will come from the speakers built into the iPhone. However, if your vehicle has a built-in Bluetooth hands-free system, then your call will be heard through that system and not the iPhone speakers. As long as you do not remove the iPhone to take the call, the XM SkyDock will automatically tune to the last channel you were listening to before you answered the call.

Magnetic Antenna: The unit comes supplied with a magnetic antenna that is designed to be run outside of the vehicle and placed on the roof of your vehicle. The magnetic antenna will adhere to your vehicle's sheet metal. The magnetic antenna measures 1.4375" wide x 0.5625" tall x 1.75" deep, and features an attached 11' cable terminated by a SMB connector.

Connection: The XM SkyDock Satellite Radio Receiver provides three connection options to transfer XM Satellite Radio audio to your vehicle's audio system.

  • PowerConnect: The XM SkyDock Satellite Radio receiver feature an integrated PowerConnect FM transmitter/cigarette lighter adapter which allows the XM Satellite Radio receiver to wirelessly transmit audio to your vehicle's in-dash headunit over and FM frequency. You can choose from any FM frequency between: 88.1 and 107.9 MHz. You can store up to 4 FM stations so you can quickly access the stations which give you the best audio reception when using the PowerConnect. The PowerConnect FM transmitter/cigarette lighter adapter simply plugs into the power port of the included vehicle dock and the cigarette lighter or 12-volt accessory port of your vehicle.
  • Auxiliary: The XM SkyDock Satellite Radio receiver also has a minijack audio output (3.5mm) to connect the unit directly to your in-dash headunit's auxiliary input (if applicable), using the supplied stereo minijack cable. When using the line output jack, you can adjust the level to match your headunit's other sources.
  • FM Direct (optional): The FM Direct Adaptor (607FMDA25, sold separately) connects directly in-line with your vehicle's existing AM/FM antenna input (Motorola) and the XM Satellite receiver's FM output (2.5mm). This optimizes the XM receiver's built-in FM modulator to your vehicle's radio, especially in regions with a high density of FM radio stations and few open FM channels.

Mounting: The XM SkyDock mounts into your vehicle's cigarette lighter or power adapter socket. The XM SkyDock's integrated PowerConnect FM transmitter/cigarette lighter adapter features a flexible stalk which allows you to adjust the angle of the XM SkyDock. The XM SkyDock's flexible stalk give you lots of freedom to position your iPhone or iPod touch so it is convenient for you to use. You can twist the stalk up to 90-degrees in either directions, and bend it to the be clear of controls or other items in your vehicle.

Portrait or Landscape View: The XM SkyDock allows you to use your iPod touch or iPhone in portrait or landscape view. Your iPod touch or iPhone will display XM Satellite information such as the current tuned channel, the song or show being played, the artist's name, an other information.

Note: The XM SkyDock is not equipped with its own display.

Controls: The XM SkyDock only has two control buttons which allow you to power the unit on/off and select FM presets. You will use your docked iPhone or iPod touch to control all other functions of the XM SkyDock from the downloaded XM SkyDock App.

Real-Time Channel Guide: The on-screen Real-Time Channel Guide allows you to browse programs, artists, and songs playing on other channels, without having to channel the channel you are currently listening to.

Favorites: You can save and enjoy fast access to up to 12 of your favorite XM Satellite Radio channels.

Direct Tuning: An on-screen keypad (0-9) allows you to directly tune in an XM Satellite Radio station.

Song Tagging: Song Tagging allows you to discover new music and easily purchase from iTunes to expand your personal music library. You can tag any artist/song combination and set the XM Sky Dock to alert you when either the artist or song is paying on any channel at any time. You can then choose to purchase the song from iTunes. The XM SkyDock can track up to 50 of your favorite songs or artists.

Alert: You can set alerts to notify you when your favorite song, artist, or sports team is playing on other channels.

Stock and Sports Tickers: The Stock and Sports Ticker allows you to track  your favorite stores and sports teams. The XM SkyDock can display a ticker that shows you the scores of y our favorite sports teams and the prices and movement of your designated stocks (up to 64).

Traffic & Weather: You can jump to your pre-selected traffic and weather channel with one touch.

Parental Controls: The Parental Control screen lets you lock channels you do not want others (such as children) to access without your permission. Your locked channels are protected by a 4-digit code.

Outdated

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great concept but now outdated thanks to the Apple Lightening Connector. The Skydock only comes with the old 30 pin connector and will not work with new Ipods or Iphones. While Apple makes a converter, the end result is anything but high tech.

XM SkyDock™

Written By Dennis B, VT on Friday, January 24, 2014

My wife bought me this for Christmas. Great way to get Satellite radio in my F250 SuperDuty! Installation was simple and I was activated in no time at all. Even better than Sirius, I can play all my favorite albums in my iTunes thru my truck stereo! Love it.
Pros:
Easy install. Plays music from other apps like Pandora, YouTube or iPod etc.
Cons:
I use the Lifeproof case, so I needed to get a Lifeproof charger extension to make it work. Unit is a little jiggly over rough roads.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Second one I've bought, one for a 2007 Tahoe and one for a 2002 Mustang. I already have SiriusXM in both. I just bought the product because it's a good looking and convenient charger for my iPhone. A bit expensive for just a charger, but considering how many standard chargers I've been through, it's well worth it. This is a very durable product.

Good inexpensive, temporary solution.

Written By Kevin, Newport, RI on Saturday, October 05, 2013

Decent product. Stalk repositions if you spend a lot of time driving bumpy roads. No buffer from what I can tell, so if you lose the signal, you lose the music until the signal returns. Takes longer than I would like to initially get going if your app is not on the homescreen ready to go. I bought this as a temporary solution, and it is just that. Not what I would want long term.
Pros:
Cheap, temporary solution to a new head unit.
Cons:
Not as elegant as a new head unit.

SkyDock is Great!

Written By Stephen, Athens,GA on Monday, September 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my 10 year old XM receiver. Setup and installation is a breeze. The AUX input is nice. I did use the FM modulator for a while and it worked fine, but I setup the AUX settings in my tuner and now no longer have to worry about finding stations as I travel. Love the fact that I can move the unit between vehicles easily. Charges the phone as you use it. The app is great and reliable. Plenty of nice features make this a great purchase for XM radio users.
Pros:
Setup is easy. Charges phone as you use it. Mobility between vehicles. AUX option.
Cons:
It would be nice to have the XM mute/pause itself when a call comes in to the phone.

XM Skydock

Written By XM Skydock Owner, St. Louis, MO on Friday, July 19, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set-up and activate. Sounds great. I wanted a portable satellite radio to use in different vehicles and this works. This was much less expensive than a dedicated satellite radio, and I don't have to worry about an additional piece of electronics. I'm using the aux input of my stereo for the Skydock, and I have no complaints regarding the sound quality. The Skydock app displays artist and song title, allows iTunes tagging, and you can create a list of favorite stations.
Pros:
Easy to use and great sound quality.
Cons:
None

This was just what I needed to get XM in my car with a radio that did not offer an AUX. I purchased the FM modulator with it and the radio has no squelch sounds in the background. Very good product and would recommend it to others.
Pros:
Easy to install - works great with factory radios that do not have an AUX.

The perfect solution

Written By John H, Bullhead City, AZ on Thursday, May 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The XM skydock was a great choice for my wife's Jeep. There was very little room for any after market accessories. This plugs right into the power outlet and takes up very little room. I was a little hesitant about it staying plugged in and not moving around with the weight of our I phones. This is not a problem at all. We go off road a lot and it stays in place. We can listen to our favorite classic rock station in the middle of the desert. Keeping our I phones charged is a plus!
Pros:
Easy to install (took 5 minutes) great reception even mounted on the hood. Soft top jeep no place to mount on roof.
Cons:
None so far.

The SkyDock is easy to install with all needed parts and instructions provided. Connection with XM went smoothly. It works good on an older radio without the audio cable. becomes undocked sometimes. I will try the Velcro behind the dock suggestion mentioned in another review.

Price through Crutchfield is unbeatable, the installation was easy
Cons:
The SkyDock disconnects and undocks when driving.

XM SkyDock™

Written By Bill, Colorado Springs, CO on Friday, January 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as specified; however, The iPhone 4s doesn't connect properly unless it is removed from it's case. When my house blocks the radio channels, the iPhone app runs clearly, but when on the road, the background static makes the music to noisy to listen to. I have ordered the FM Antenna Adapter and hope that solves the problem. I had a previous XM portable and needed the adapter for that as well. The stand holds the iPhone at a comfortable easy to read height.
Pros:
Easy to install as packaged
Cons:
Poor audio using the built in FM transmitter, especially in areas with the FM spectrum barraged

Excellent choice for satellite radio

Written By JPourteau, Prince George, VA on Thursday, December 20, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife's Mini Cooper would require a $700 upgrade to receive xm. The sky dock took care of the problem. MIT works seamlessly with the fm modulator and has multiple frequencies you can set. I love the interface between the iPhone and the xm app. Better than any device you can get from xm or Sirius. Easy to install.
Pros:
Easy install. App is great for browsing stations and seeing what's next
Cons:
Can disconnect on bumps from the dock if not secured. Occasionally reports that the sky dock is not connected when it is

XM Skydock

Written By MarkJ, Portland, OR on Wednesday, November 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The XM Skydck is an excellent choice for those that wish to utilize existing devices! I read alot of the reviews taking others notes into great consideration to whether or not they would effect what my expectations were and decided to buy it and try it out in my '04 Ford Expedition and I am very happy I did! hook was extremly easy to my Kenwood DNX9140 head unit and works PERFECTLY even despite what some say about being able to run multiple apps when the XM Skydock app is running. Simply not the case for me! i can have it running listening to whatever at the time and if a call comes in it switches over WITHOUT any issues and then when the call is complete comes back to the XM Skydock app and resumes perfectly EVERYTIME!

One thing I would HIGHLY recommend is to NOT cheap out on the Audio cable that connects it to your AUX in! I first had a regular $6.99 cable feeding my Kenwood and it sounded "OK" and was what I expected based on others reviews. but when I found that cable had a bad spot from riders using it in there other devices prior to getting the Skydock and replaced with a Monster cable (1/8" to Phono a $30 cable) wholly cow did it come alive!!! It now sounds as good as when I had my touch or iPhone connected to the iPod connection of my Kenwood radio!
Pros:
Super Easy to Install, Works Flawlessly (For My System) Power Dock Locks in Tight

XM Skydock

Written By Twinlead, Rochester, NY on Sunday, September 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Skydock works very well so far. It is allowing me to get some use out of my gen 1 iPod Touch. The features and functions are intuitive and work fine. That said, the supplied antenna cable is way too short and the stalk is also too short for our 2005 Prius. I realize this is designed for a quick and temporary/transportable installation, however in order to achieve a more finished look I needed about 10 more feet of antenna cable. To resolve the short stock issue, I installed a new cigarette lighter outlet below the driver's right side ac vent. When plugged in to the car's OEM power outlet, the stalk was not only too short to be practical (or safe to operate while driving) but also too loose and would not support the weight of my iPhone without constantly losing power. Once I installed the new power outlet and used my Touch I no longer experienced any connectivity issues. Although I have no experience with the XM Snap, it seems the Snap's stalk would be a more appropriate length for the Skydock. The only other issues I had are with SiriusXM Customer Support. Although friendly, they are seemingly unable to follow directions or give accurate answers. I highly recommend validating your account online after speaking to them to ensure the subscription you have is what you actually want.
Pros:
Convenient, works well, comparatively inexpensive, somewhat portable
Cons:
Antenna cable and stalk are too short.

Couldn't be happier with this product. I was skeptical to purchase at first after reading many bad reviews, but I liked the idea of using my iPod and being able to tag songs. I have yet to try this in other vehicles but it is positioned right at my fingertips in my 2011 F-150. This product has worked flawlessly so far, I have no complaints.
Pros:
Works exactly as described, very fast shipping from Crutchfield!
Cons:
NONE!

Won't fit all cars

Written By Chris, Miami, Florida on Monday, February 06, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This item would not fit the DC power port in my Infiniti, it went in easily but when removing it, it pulled the entire power port out. It seems the gasket is slightly too big for Nissan's and Infiniti's. It worked in my GM vehicle but they have built in XM so I ended up returning it. I attempted to call the manufacturer about the issues and the destruction done to my vehicle but they would not speak to me and continued to pass me back between departments. Crutchfield was unable to help me other than offering me a refund.
Cons:
Does not fit properly in all vehicle power ports.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with this product. I usually dread speaking with XM Radio people but the switch from my old radio to the Skydock went very well. The interface with my iPhone is very good... i love the different ways to search channels and the display. My guy Buck at Crutchfield was awesome and assured me that I was making the right purchase for my needs. The only gripe I have with the sky dock is the length of the unit. My Honda Oddy. has the power outlets really low so the dock is low... but it works great other than that.
Pros:
Good product and interface. CRUTCHFIELD is always good.
Cons:
Not long enough...?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first one of these I ordered lasted only 3 days. Crutchfield is so amazing they sent me a new one out immediately! The idea behind this is great. It gets the device into a safe place and keeps it charged. Even if you're just using it to dock, charge or as an input for your mp3 files on your i device it is worth looking into. Definitely worth the price I paid!
Pros:
CRUTCHFIELD IS AWESOME! Gets your device in safe place, inputs through your car stereo, keeps your device charged fully
Cons:
Obviously designed for iPod touch or 3rd gen iPhone. iPhone 4 or 4S will work w/o the case or if you have a very minimal case it MIGHT work with it. I had to do a little trim work on the case for my iPhone 4S but now it works great, just can't change cases, that kind of stinks. The dock is heavy w a phone in it so you kind of have to position it accordingly. I put a little velcro on the back of my dock to secure it once I figured out where I liked it best.

Skydock and iPod Touch 4thG

Written By Tiger, Florida on Sunday, May 08, 2011

I see that other people are having problems since the SiriusXm channel update. Before that, my Skydock played my iPod tunes beautifully through my truck's sound system. There is a Pop-Up on the XM that says the "mute" button now serves a function that it already did before. The radio works ok, but no sound through my speakers for the other apps. I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with SiriusXM and they said that they are "escalating this as a new issue". Maybe they'll have a fix. It's been excellent up to now.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Loved my skydock until they issued the software update. The big sell on the update was that it allows you to leave XM, place a phone call, and phone would return to XM when call ended.
Unfortunately, now when you push the home button on your IPhone, it just puts the XM in hold mode. Take your phone out, put it back in, and XM cannot start the XM receiver because it is still running from previous use and system can't get in.
You have to completely re-boot your I-Pnone to shut off the radio, and then it will start back up. SkyDock needs to fix this problem with a new update with an OFF function for radio. Can't find any customer service for this thing... Very Frustrating!!!

[Editor's Note: You cannot un-dock your iPhone when you get a call, you must use the speakerphone, or a Bluetooth adapter/headset.]

Great product, but something is missing...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great FM transmitter and solid unit. They need to figure out a way to transmit your phone
calls over the unit. The "listen to your call through the external speakers" is not the
solution at highway speeds. This can be a serious safety harzard when trying to remove
the phone from the Skydock. Would be a solid 5 stars with that feature!

great answer to several issues

Written By Dean, Corona del Mar, CA on Friday, January 07, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent way to interface your ipod/itouch/iphone with an older car that does not have an
audio input jack. But, the sound quality was unacceptable until I added the "FM Direct
Adapter", from XM, which inputs to the radio through its antenna input.

However, the XM/Sirius radio lineup was disappointing to me. I had hoped for classical and
U.S. News. There are really only 3 classical offerings and no U.S. news, just opinion and
talk. The lack of a news offering is more of a cultural observation than a critique of XM, I fear.

Was a great product, but...

Written By John, Baltimore, MD on Tuesday, October 12, 2010

When I bought this it was perfect: charges my iPod Touch, plays music, XM interface, low cost. However, since the update to iOS 4.1 and version 2.18 of the XM app, the XM service is inoperative. When you launch the XM app, it makes repeated attempts to connect but finally fails. The error message either states that it could not power on the radio (meanwhile playing through iPod and charging is fine), OR that the dock is disconnected.

I contacted XM. They wanted me to unistall/reinstall the app. No effect. I even emailed the development team. Nothing.

If you only want to charge and play your iPod, there are cheaper answers. Until XM fixes this problem, this product is only partially useful.

A Very Good Solution

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product as a replacement for the XM radio that was part of my old Garmin GPS.

While not as good as a built in XM radio, for my older model car it is more than an acceptable solution. As I only use the dock to listen to my XM radio, via my iPhone, it is a very good product and the quality and ease of use is outstanding.

Love it!

Written By tina, virginia on Wednesday, September 08, 2010

I've only had my Skydock for a couple of days, but so far I absolutely LOVE it! My cigarette lighter is recessed so I was worried that I wouldn't be able to use this, but because of the flexible stalk, it fits just fine in my car.

I love having only one wire (the antenna wire, easily hidden) so the dashboard doesn't look so cluttered. It was very easy to set up. I'm using it through an FM channel and it sounds fine. The XM app is easy to navigate. I haven't tried some of the features - ex. tagging songs - so I can't comment on those and some reviews have complained that you can't multi-task (an Apple issue, I believe).

I bought in store (a great big THANKS to the Crutchfield staff person who let me make sure it would fit in my car before I bought it!). There's a rebate IF you subscribe - check the details. I couldn't find any price break for current subscribers. Crutchfield's price is $20 less than the XM shop.

Great product

Written By Kevin, Bay Area, CA on Sunday, June 06, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great simple product and easy way to add XM to your vehicle.
Pros:
-Easy setup, depending on what mode of connection you use. I didn't even bother using the FM transmitter and went for a direct auxillary adapter (HON98-AUX ). Once connected, worked like a charm.
-Great app which makes control easy, yet another functionality of your iphone
-I placed the satellite receive on my dashboard, hoping to avoid mounting on the roof and it seems t work just fine.

Cons:
-I already have XM everything for another radio and I was told by them directly I could use the same subscription for my Skydock, this is not true. You must have a subscription for each radio.
-Crutchfield did not tell me I needed a RCA to 3.5mm adapter to connect my equipment. I assumed tey would have thought of this as I asked them if I had ordered everyhting I need to get going. I was able to get the adapter easily, but still delayed by a day.
-My phone locks down even though I have disabled that feature in the settings. Not sure if I can fix, but a small pain.
-I have a malware cover on my iphone and it takes a bit of pressing down, but works ok, connection sometimes comes off if I turn it to landscape mode. I keep it in portrait mode and it works great.
-holder is a bit shaky, but doesn't affect performance.

Really great but...

Written By Douglas, Cumberland, Md on Sunday, March 14, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The SkyDock is the best device that I have come across to present your phone to you while driving. Sounds best when directly connected through the cable included. You can play the XM Radio, iTunes, Pandora, Wolfgangs Vault etc. Any way that you can play music on your phone you can send it to your vehicle's radio.. The problem is trying to pull the SkyDock out of the power point. My Toyota Highlander's receptacle came apart and broke (note suppling power) while I tried to pull the SD from it. You have to pull it a lot harder that feels comfortable. I suppose that the rubber gaskets on the power plug will wear and it will fit better over time.

Great concept but...

Written By Craig, Baltimore, MD on Friday, February 19, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have both an IPod touch and XM radio in my Ford Expedition. The idea of combining the two sounded great, so I got the XM Skydock. It installed easily and worked just as described. I only have two issues. 1. The volume can be controlled for the XM portion of the unit, but the music I have stored in the IPod has no volume control and its quite loud as compared to the XM radio side. 2. If you are using the direct connection, you may very likely pick up engine noises. I don't dislike karaoke, but having my engine sing along can be quite annoying. I have had mulitple discussions with Crutchfield Tech Support and even purchased a noise filter, but the problem has no resolution. On the good side, the FM part of the Skydock does work well and will eliminate the noise issue, but the sound quality is not nearly as good.

XM Skydock - XM Everywhere -Highly Recommended

Written By Kenneth, Goliad, TX on Friday, January 22, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you own an Iphone, you cannot fo better for a satellite radio upgrade than what the Skydock provides. Excellent reception and sound. I have two vehicles, one which I use FM connect and the other has a front auxiliary input. The Skydock allows a simple connection of the radio antenna wire to the dock, insert your IPhone, start the app and listen to the music or news of your choice.

I have seen minimal problems with the app and dock but occasionally the dock does not connect to XM. Restarting the app on the phone corrects this. The only major annoyance that I see is that the "Learn More" screen when the app starts stays on the screen until you dismiss it. I hope a future software update will fix that problem as once the radio is registered this screen should not appear.

I have also purchased a 110 volt converter and use the FM connect feature with my home stereo as I have a Samsung XM ready HTIB but there is no direct connector for the Skydock to the receiver yet. My home XM antenna and my antenna from my previous install in one of my vehicles both work fine with the Skydock.

Navigation on the Skydock is simple and your selection stays highlighted for a couple of seconds which is nice. Also plays the IPod features of the phone. One of the best products I have seen for XM.

Only drawback is hiding the antenna wire on each vehicle you want to be able to use the Skydock in.

Works Great,

Written By Anonymous, Denver,CO on Wednesday, December 30, 2009

I custom mounted a power outlet (cig lighter) into my Jeep Wrangler Dash where my radio used to be. My radio is in an overhead console now. The Skydock sits well in the outlet and holds the phone even in my rough jeep. The FM works great in my jeep but I tried it in one of my work vehicles and it was not that great. This is not a big deal to me as the dock also has the audio out that I used a cassette adapter instead. The software is very easy to use and I like that it will notify you when a song you tagged is playing.
So not only can I listen to XM and my music on my phone but I can run other apps like GPS and the phone stays charged.

Perfect Marriage of XM and iPod

Written By James, Central Virginia on Monday, December 21, 2009

As a longtime XM subscriber, I have been through 2 other receivers, the MyFi and
XM2Go. Both had their pros and cons, but THIS is an awesome product. The iPod
software is intuitive and the display is so much better than my 2 previous
receivers. The sound quality of the FM transmitter is noticeably better than the
XM2Go unit it replaced. Channel changing is much quicker, as well. Installation
was a snap-20 minutes, or so. The arm is sturdy and easily adjustable. Also, I
no longer need separate devices to play my iPod and XM, reducing dashboard
clutter and a glovebox full of wires, connectors, and STUFF. The only minor cons
I can think of, is you are limited to 12 presets. Also, a Bluetooth/speakerphone
option would be a nice addition. (I'm using an iPod touch, rather than an
iPhone, so I don't know if there's a workaround for this on the iPhone).
Since the interface is software-based on the iPod, I expect that they will
continue to expand and improve the MANY features it offers. Even if the unit
didn't have an XM receiver, it would be one of the best iPod/iPhone mounts for
the car, I've seen.. Adding the receiver, makes it truly a must-have accessory
for iPod/iPhone users!

Sneaky

Written By Anonymous, Stevensville, MD on Wednesday, November 25, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First let me say this review is two fold. The product itself is great. It "locks" in nicely to the aux. plug and holds the phone better than the road trip I have. The sky doc software is slick and overall the sound quality is better than other FM transmitter docs I have used in the past.
THE PROBLEM. Sirius XM needs to get their act together. I was a current Sirius subscriber and couldn't transfer my exsiting service to this device, I had to buy new XM service and pay extra to get Sirius best of. I know when companies merge they take time to get the pieces put together well but this is a lame way to capture new/ additional business. After some discussion with the Sky Doc customer service people they finally gave me a years worth of service at a discounted rate and waived the registration fee.

SIRIUS XM- people want your service, reward them for the business, don't nickel and dime us!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this item to accompany my Ipod Touch in a 2004 Mercedes C Class. The SkyDock works great - was incredibly easy to set up - and is a joy to use. I particularly like the ability get XM radio in various cars - just take the SkyDock with you and plug it in. While the instructions suggested that the antenna be mounted on the roof of the car I found that simply placing it on the dash worked equally as well and did not require any of the meticulous hiding of wires, etc. All in all this is a great product. That combined with Crutchfield's great price and service make for a sure winner.

Only a couple of things are keeping me from giving this 5 stars. 1 - You can't pause live shows (in case you get a phone call). 2 - You can't record shows. Other than that, it's great. When you install it, you will have to push twice as hard to get it in as you think you should have. Seriously, you really have to push it in hard to get the Skydock to make contact with both the "+" and "-" contacts. Crutchfield is the best place to buy electronics.

If you want to subscribe to XM Radio or just play the songs and movies on your Ipod Touch or Iphone this is what you have been waiting for. Just download the XM Skydock App from the Itunes store to use with your current subscription or if this is your first XM receiver you can activate it online or by phone.

The Skydock is very well made and will bend into all kinds of positions to fit where you put it into the car. I am using mine with the built in FM Connect transmitter and the sound is great!! Even if you do not subscribe to XM this will play all your songs and videos or podcasts and you will have it at arms length in the car. Buy it you will love it!!!

How does this work with an iPod in a car if there is no 3G or 4g signal? [ Scott  Mar 29, 2014 ]

  • Through your aux port and xm antenna. [ RICHARD   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • hi scott, its works good, the xm works off your fm transmitter in your car radio, you only need 3g/4g when you are using maps or your iphone. i love my xm skydoc, i even use it with my old iphone 3 and get great reception, i use it just for music. hope this was helpful. [ CRAIG   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • The skydock uses the xm antenna connection so you don't use your data plan [ CALVIN E   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • The XM skydock's signal comes from the included satellite antenna. You don't need any cell tower reception. You only need to download the app and your good to go. We use ours in the desert when we go off roading where there is no cell phone signal at all. [ JOHN   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • too cumbersome. [ JOHN   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • Sky Dock does not require WiFi or phone service. Once you have the Sky Dock, plug in your iPod and get the XM App and get the radio receiver number, you can start listening to XM. Although you have to have XM service paid and an XM antenna plugged into it. If you do not have an AUX on your radio and will be using the FM, I recommend the FM transmitter as well [ KENNETH   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • The Skydock is a SiriusXM receiver and it uses a satellite signal (just like a GPS) not a cell signal. You have to purchase a subscription to SiriusXM radio in order to receive the signal. [ LAURA   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • There are certain frequencies on the radio stations that allow for shortwave radio transmission. By programming your stereo to like 88.3 or 87.9 just depended upon your location. This allows the SkyDock to transfer the transmission over the air on an open frequency of your radio. [ JEFFREY   Mar 31, 2014 ]
  • The xm works through satellite feed so 3G or 4g is not necessary...u can play prerecorded and stream audio through the sky dock and charge your phone. [ LINDA D   Mar 31, 2014 ]

  • If you haven't bought it yet, don't. Mine is still in the box. They make you think it is very easy to set up. Just plug it in and go with it. But that is not how it works, The antenna is a real problem. I didn't think it had an antenna. Your better off with another radio than to buy this one. If you have it, you probably won't be happy with it. If I could get my money back and get something else, I would. Dennis C. [ DENNIS D   Dec 19, 2013 ]
  • The antenna lead is quite long. I mounted the magnetic base in from of my windshield since I have a soft top Jeep. I ran the lead between the hood and windshield and found an opening in the firewall to pass the lead through. The whole process only took about 5 minutes. The lead is very thin and the connector is small so it will fit through just about any opening. [ JOHN   Dec 19, 2013 ]

Next, I ran the wire behind the weather stripping of the door and behind the dashboard. I brought the wire out from behind the ashtray near the cigarette lighter/12 volt outlet.
