Velodyne

Our take on the Velodyne DLS-4000R

Powerful subwoofer delivers big bass

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

If you're serious about bass, the DLS-4000R from Velodyne may be the perfect subwoofer for you. It includes a high-powered 200-watt amplifier and a massive 12" long-throw woofer for big, room-rattling bass. Plus, it features advanced circuitry that controls all the sub's functionality with incredible accuracy. From the high-impact excitement of home theater to the delicate acoustic bass lines of a jazz quartet, the DLS-4000R delivers dynamic bass with amazing warmth and clarity. And the included remote control lets you adjust the sub's volume and access other functions from the comfort of your favorite chair.

Precision digital signal processing

DSP chip

Enjoy incredibly accurate bass thanks to the DLS-4000R's DSP circuitry.

The key to the DLS-4000R's exceptional sound is in the digital signal processing (DSP). DSPs are embedded computer chips that monitor the audio functions of the subwoofer. It's like having your bass controlled with the accuracy of a high-speed computer. DSP subwoofers have never been available in this price range before — usually, they cost at least twice this much.

Remote

Flexible bass control at the push of a button

With the DLS-4000R, Velodyne give you flexible control over the bass output. Four customized audio presets — Movies, Rock, Jazz/Classical, Games — allow you to fine tune the sub's sound to suit your tastes and source material. Night Mode limits the maximum output for polite late-night listening sessions. And a 4-position selectable phase control ensures seamless blending with your main speakers.

The DLS-4000R features flexible connectivity options, so it's easy to incorporate this sub into your existing system, whether for stereo music or home theater. You get line-level and speaker-level inputs, including a crossover bypass for 5.1 home theater bass precision. There's even a stereo line-level output with a selectable 80 Hz or 100 Hz high-pass crossover for use with a pre-amplifier.

Features

Maximum Dynamic Power Amplifier: The DLS-4000R amplifier is capable of delivering enormous continuous and reserve dynamic power. The subwoofer is driven by 200 watts of continuous RMS power and 400 watts of dynamic power.

Reinforced Fiber Driver: To compliment the powerful amplifier, the subwoofer uses an extended excursion driver with a reinforced fiber cone and foam surround. The driver is engineered with a vented pole-piece that increases power handling and assures long-term reliability.

Distortion Limiting System: This system, programmed into the subwoofer's DSP, maximizes usable amplifier power and provides maximum available cone travel without overdriving. The software parameters used for the DLS system are customized for each DLS-R amplifier and driver. With digital precision, it is possible to achieve the maximum allowable performance from both the amplifier and woofer motor structure without overdriving either. The result is deeper bass extension, bigger impact and cleaner output.

Bass-reflex Design: The cabinet features a slot-loaded, front-firing, bass-reflex design. This approach minimizes the distortion created in ported cabinets known as "port noise" and maximizes bass impact.

Anti-clipping Circuitry: The sub incorporates anti-clipping circuitry to limit amplifier clipping distortion.

Controls

Low-pass Crossover: The crossover control allows you to adjust the upper limit of the subwoofer's frequency response from 40 to 120 Hz.

High-pass Crossover: The high-pass crossover can be set to 80 or 100 Hz. This crossover is functional on both line and speaker-level outputs.

DSP Controlled: Presets for customized listening, volume control, night mode, low-pass crossover, phase, anti-clipping and overdrive protection are all controlled with the precision of a high-speed computer. DSP technology means that the subwoofer delivers the cleanest, deepest, and highest output bass possible, while maintaining a flat, detailed and accurate frequency response.

Remote Control: The supplied remote lets you control the following functions:

  • Power: This button forces the subwoofer into standby mode. The woofer will not play and the LED will turn off. The unit will remain in this mode until the power button is pressed again.
  • Mute: This button mutes the subwoofer.
  • Phase: This control allows you to optimize the subwoofer performance based on its location and your listening position. You can select one of the following settings: 0°, 90°, 180°, or 270°.
  • Light: If you wish, you can deactivate the blue front panel light on this unit.
  • Night: Night mode limits the maximum output of the subwoofer for late night listening.
  • Volume +/-: This control allows you to balance the output from the subwoofer to the main speakers in your system. You can also control the volume from the back panel of the subwoofer.
  • Presets: You can choose any of the following presets:
    • Movies: maximum output and impact for explosions and other action adventure movie content
    • R&B - Rock: provides the driving bass found in today's rock music
    • Jazz - Classical: offers the tightest, cleanest, lowest distortion bass
    • Games: maximum loudness available for the impact of video games

Subwoofer Direct: To bypass the subwoofer's internal crossover when the unit is being fed a low-pass signal from another crossover, simply select the Subwoofer Direct mode. This will eliminate the internal crossover from the signal path.

Auto Turn-on Function: With this function in the "active" position, the subwoofer will turn itself on automatically when an audio signal is present. If no signal is present for a period of time, the unit will switch to standby mode.

Connections

Preamp Level Input: The line-level jacks should be used when connecting the subwoofer to a pre-amp, signal processor, line-level crossover, or receiver with pre-amp level outputs.

Preamp Level Output: This stereo line-level output has an 80 or 100 Hz high-pass crossover for use with a pre-amp.

Speaker Level Input: The speaker-level jacks connect directly to the speaker outputs of any amplifier, integrated amplifier, or receiver.

Speaker Level Output: The speaker outputs send a crossed-over signal to the front speakers. This output is affected by the high-pass crossover, which can be set to 80 or 100 Hz.

Great Product

Written By T From AZ, Phoenix on Thursday, April 14, 2011

I originally purchased my DLSR-4000 from a store that was going out of business in New York City via ebay. I received the sub brand new in box and when I opened it up and looked at the manufacture date I was shocked, Sept 2005. that was in Feb 2008. Here I am today using the same sub in 2011. I spent 6 months researching before I bought this sub and I am very happy with it. Bass is clear, precise and hard hitting. I called Velodyne back in 2008 and the only changes at that time were to the circuitry, it had been shrunk because of new manufacturing processes, other wise no change. What can I say it is a superior product, that is why it is still manufactured today.

Simply the Best!

Written By Howard J, College Station, TX on Sunday, March 27, 2011

I have had Miller & Kreisel and Klipsh subs, but I must say Velodyne blows them away easily. I am sure you can go out and buy a $2,000 dollar sub that has more bells and whistles, but for the price of the DLS-4000R, you are going to get MORE BANG for your BUCK. Aesthetics alone makes this the sub to buy, as well as the ease of setup.

Thank you Crutchfield for having the best customer service I have ever had to work with, you made sure that I was satisfied when there was a few problems in the initial process of purchase.

Sub-standard remote system

Written By Ironskull, Alamogordo, NM on Sunday, May 16, 2010

I've owned a new 10" and a 12" velodyne sub with remote.
The remote system in the 10" quit working after seven months. Thinking it was a fluke I then bought a 12" and the remote system failed in just over a year.
Velodyne woofers sound great, The remote systems just doesn't last. I've also heard of other people who have had this problem.

After listening to a friend's Velodyne subwoofer I decided to upgrade mine as well, I purchased the DLS-4000R and couldn't be more pleased! Whether I am watching movies, playing PS3 or just listening to music, this subwoofer goes above and beyond anything I could of imagined! Every bit of bass that comes out of it sounds perfect and distortion free, I highly recommend it!

Velodyne Excellence

Written By Dean, Lake of the Ozarks, MO on Sunday, March 08, 2009

I purchased my first Velodyne Subwoofer (model VA-1012) on March 5, 1994, and after 15 years of more than average daily use it finally produced its last bass broadcast. I never had a moment of dissatisfaction and was more than pleased with its performance. My new Velodyne DLS-4000R Subwoofer now has taken its place completely delivering the same quality sound and with the added convenience of a remote control. There is no acceptable replacement for quality and quality is apparent in the Velodyne products.

Super Sub

Written By Big Mike, Phoenix, Az. on Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Speaker level input allows me to use this with my older (but irreplaceable) reciever, gives me the incredible bottom end I needed and more. Compliments my surround sound for my movie needs too and the remote and presets are just an added bonus..an incredible piece, and the price I couldn't beat either. Crutchfield...you've come thru fopr me again!

Remote & Price make it a steal

Written By Charles, Chicago, IL on Thursday, August 07, 2008

Great clean sound particularly for music. It produces bass that you can feel but maybe not enough for some that really love that power. Of course power cost money. That said, the price point and features made it a no brainer for me. For the money, it's like you get the remote and dsp for free. It's great to be able to change modes and volume from the comfort of my couch. It's IR so I just programmed it on my universal learning remote. Every source whether music or movies is unique and being able to easily tweak it makes all the difference for me. If this is your price point you can't beat it.

This is the best purchase I have ever made... ever.

Written By Dave, Stafford, VA on Thursday, February 21, 2008

This sub will single handedly improve what ever set up you have by a factor of 10. Until I hooked this bad boy up, I obviously did not know what a subwoofer was supposed to sound like. I use my system almost exclusively for movie watching; this sub will bring out sounds that you never knew existed on the movies you've seen a million times. The quality and depth of the bass is simply amazing. I would gladly have paid more than a $1000 for this subwoofer. This is a MUST OWN component!!!

Excellent sub for music & movies

Written By Alexander, Los Angeles, CA on Monday, October 29, 2007

I bought this sub to replace an older Velodyne 10" Velodyne sub that mysteriously quit on me after sever years of outstanding performance.

As good as I thought my old sub was, this newer Velodyne was much better and had serious sound improvements that you can acutally hear. This is sub almost distortion free, at any sound level, and at any frequency. This sub also has more more options to allow you to properly set up your sub.

Once the sub has been set up correctly, you get hassle free sound. On my old sub, I would frequently have to adjust settings for music and movies. Quite often, bass response is more exaggerated on music, but with this sub it is no longer so. I credit the accuracy and disortion free sound of this sub. I have a medium sized listening room and this sub fills that space with plenty of bass. The bass can be heard and felt in all listening positions but more importantly, it still sounds accurate. It is never 'boomy' even if you sit right next to it (I have mine located behind the sofa).

Overall, I would highly recommend this sub. I thought my previous Velodyne sub (which I paid $600 several years ago) was a great sub. Thanks to technology and Velodyne, this new sub has provided real world improvements that you can actually hear and feel. You get audiophile quality sound for a fair price.
