Velodyne

Our take on the Velodyne MiniVee

Powerful 1,000-watt mini-subwoofer

Velodyne Authorized Online Dealer

Don't judge Velodyne's MiniVee by its size alone — this tiny subwoofer dishes out accurate and suprisingly hard-hitting bass. Underneath its attractive cabinet, the MiniVee boasts an 8" woofer and a 1,000 watt amplifier. You'll enjoy deep, resonant lows — from the thundering of horse hooves in your favorite Western flick, to the smooth lines of a bass guitar.

Mini Vee amplifier

The amp dishes out 1,000 watts for hard-hitting bass.

High-quality construction for clear, deep bass

This compact sub achieves strong, powerful lows with its high-tech design and materials. The 8" driver is reinforced with Kevlar and mounted in a rock-solid die-cast aluminum basket, giving you exceptionally tight, musical bass. And Velodyne's exclusive "Dynamic Driver Control System" assures linear woofer movement that greatly reduces distortion.

Woofer

The Kevlar-reinforced woofer provides tight bass.

Coil

A high-temperature voice coil help this sub produce deep, powerful bass.

Versatile connectivity

The MiniVee also offers flexible hookup options. Its back panel sports gold-plated line-level and speaker-level inputs. A crossover bypass switch means your home theater receiver can control the low frequencies for precise bass with your surround sound sources.

Features

Overview: The Velodyne MiniVee powered subwoofer is incredibly small, yet powerful enough to play low and loud.

Amplifier Section: The Velodyne MiniVee powered subwoofer uses a high quality Class D digital amplifier that cranks out 2,000 watts dynamic power and 1,000 watts RMS.

Driver: The MiniVee uses an 8'' (6.5'' piston diameter) stiff Kevlar-reinforced driver cone with a 2.5" high-temperature voice coil, 107 ounce magnet/204 ounce motor structure and an oversized spider and vented pole piece.

Enclosure: The acoustic suspension cabinet is made from a stylish black pica matte vinyl wrap material. The acoustic suspension design offers outstanding accuracy and excellent bass response.

Controls

Volume Control: This control allows you to balance the output from the subwoofer to the main speakers and amplifier in your system. The control should be set to achieve similar output level from both the main speakers and subwoofer when listening to music.

Low-Pass Crossover: The crossover control allows you to adjust the upper limit of the subwoofer's frequency response from 40 to 120 Hz. You should set the crossover frequency to obtain a smooth and seamless transition from the subwoofer to the main speakers in your system.

Crossover Bypass Switch: A bypass switch is also provided if you wish to use and external crossover such as the ones found in a lot of the new digital receiver's with a dedicated LFE channel out.

Phase Adjustment: This control allows you to reverse the phase of the subwoofer's output signal 180 degrees to correct for any possible mismatch and resulting cancellation between subwoofer and your main speakers/amplifier.

Auto Turn On: Using this function your subwoofer can be safely left with the main power switched on continuously. The subwoofer will turn itself on automatically when an audio signal is present. If no signal is present for approximately 10 minutes, the unit will switch to standby mode.

Connections

Preamp Level Input: The line-level jacks should be used when connecting the subwoofer to a pre-amp, signal processor, line-level crossover, or receiver with pre-amp level outputs.

Preamp Level Output: This stereo line-level output is used with separate a pre-amp applications.

Speaker Level Input: The speaker-level jacks connect directly to the speaker outputs of any amplifier, integrated amplifier, or receiver.

Very nice. This sub is replacing a 12" 800 Watt sub. The small size does not appear to match up with the big bass that this sub is capable of. It is not nearly as "boomy" as the sub this is replacing; it produces a much "cleaner" sound and has been very good for movies and HDTV. It is surprisingly good when watching HDTV at normal/low volume levels.

Great-sub for filling in the bottom end when using mid range speakers. More than adequate SPL when placed in the right spot with tight, clean response. True, this sub will not shake the room apart, but for those who appreciate audio quality, the MiniVee just sounds good.

An outstanding sub at any price. I was surprised after removing all the packaging of the compact size of this sub. I am using it as a replacement for my older Velodyne CT-120 that stopped working after so many great years of music and movies.Set up is simple and don't let the size fool you. This really good looking compact sub rocks.I hate to say it,but it blows away my older Velodyne in so many ways.I am so glad I purchased this model.I have a very high end setup, separate amps, pre amps, Theil speakers, etc,and the sub works fantastic.I have always been a big fan of Velodyne subs and even though this is not one of their super really high end /high cost subs,it is hard to beat.So spend a few extra bucks over those boxy cheaper subs, and get this well built, outstanding sounding sub.You will be glad you did.

This sub is awesome! The bass it produces truly shakes my condo building! But it's clean and tight, so important. Impacts in movies are so realistic, music is tight.

A fabulous small sub for music! (Movies, also.)

Written By Rory, West Lafayette, IN on Saturday, December 05, 2009

I own both this subwoofer and the Velodyne Impact-Mini. Both are price category-beaters in their size class; above $400, Velodyne doesn't make any product that disappoints. The MiniVee is derived from the SPL Series II ("Small, Plays Loud"), with the most notable difference being a vinyl wrap finish instead of a painted or veneered one, and it sells for about $200 less than the SPL-R Series that it replaces. The MiniVee takes the brute force approach to making bass, with a massive 12.7-pound magnet (forget measuring the magnet weight in ounces!) and a beefy cone and suspension system in a tiny sealed enclosure driven by an efficient amp that delivers 1000W continuously. The thing that startles me about the MiniVee every time is just how deep it reaches; corner-placed, it sounds like it's reaching far lower than its stated 28 Hz LF limit (sealed boxes roll off more gradually than vented or PR enclosures), and yet it's subtle enough that I can calibrate it for powerful action sequences or seamless blending with a pair of bookshelf speakers. The MiniVee adds a great sense of weight and scale to musical performances (without sacrificing immediacy), as well as the adrenaline rushes of action movies, but it does need the right room. In my apartment, which is by no means small, it's more than enough, but to fill an entire basement home theater you may want two or four. That goes for many other subs of the same size, though.

Great Sound-Defective Grill cover

Written By frank, New York on Thursday, February 03, 2011

The thing sounds great- punchy, powerful, well defined, amazing for its size-Have it paired with a pair of high-end speakers, and it really sounds great- Bose and Polk should take note how bass should sound.........

THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE GRILLE CLOTH IS COMING OFF OF THE FRAME- I contacted Velodyne, but got no response or replacement. I just let Crutchfield know- I'm sure it will get resolved now!)
