Our take on the MTX 3512-04

MTX's 35 Series subs prove once again that you can pack a lot of technology into an affordable subwoofer. This 3512-04 12” 4-ohm sub shows off many of the features that MTX originally developed for their top-of-the-line subs. That means you get a sub that performs the way you want, delivering great low-end bump with impressive accuracy. And MTX protects this sub with their unique 5-year warranty.

The heart of the matter

The Inverted Apex Surround increases the cone's surface area for better volume displacement and a higher SPL. This sub's sophisticated suspension system offers better control over cone movement for more refined bass. MTX's venting system keeps the voice coil cooler for optimum performance over the long haul. Put this 4-ohm model in a sealed or ported enclosure, power it with a nice amp, and you've just created a cost-effective recipe for adding a solid kick to your music.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 200 and 375 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

This MTX sub sounds great in a Silverado ext cab truck when used with a down fire sealed box with the correct air space. This sub is a great value.

Only a slight uprgrade from a shallow mount 10 inch sub.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded to this sub from a 10 inch pioneer shallow mount sub. I used a 300 watt RMS amp to power the pioneer so I decided I could use the same amp for this sub After installed in my 1995 chevy s10 ext cab I was impressed with how hard this sub hits. This sub also has good mid-to-high bass, but lacks in low bass. To me it seems as if my 10 inch shallow mount had the same if not better low bass that this 12 inch sub. I built both boxes from scratch to recommended cubic feet. This sub also gets warm after about 5 minutes of use whereas my 10 inch almost never got hot.

Pros: Cheap, good mid to high bass notes, looks great.

Cons: bad lows, Gets warm quickly

Pros: Price, Air Space, and Sound

Cons: Would like to see mounting hardware for sub.

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Terminals: The woofer features heavy-duty spring post terminals which can accept single or dual (standard 3/4" width) banana plugs, pin connectors, or bare wire up to 10-gauge.

Inverted Apex Surround: The new Inverted Apex surround allows increased cone surface area, creating more air movement and higher SPL.

Progressive Suspension: The progressive suspension controls excursion at high power, thus reducing distortion and improving sound quality.

Spider Plateau Venting: Heat from the voice coil is vented through vents that surround the back of the spider. As the woofer travels back and forth, cool air is pulled in and heated air is pushed out.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: For the best possible sound quality where space is a premium MTX recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 1.0 ft³. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Vented Box: The recommended vented box has a net internal volume of 2.32 ft³ with a slot port 13-3/4" x 2-1/2" x 26-1/4". Vented (or ported) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power.
