Our take on the MTX Amplified ThunderForms

by John Pollard
MTX

Vehicle-specific enclosures with subs? Say what?

Instead of the usual sub in a box, the manufacturer creates a molded enclosure that fits perfectly into a convenient spot in your specific vehicle, housing a high-quality sub. Some enclosures even include a built-in amp, for the ultimate in stealth bass. The advantages? You don't lose much space (if any), your sub is perfectly matched to its enclosure, and your enclosure has a factory look that won't tell potential thieves you have an awesome sound system. Doesn't get better than that.

Crinkled french fries, discarded receipts, old gum wrappers — you probably have everything in the hidden corners of your vehicle except great bass. But with custom ThunderForm enclosures, you can fill the nooks and crannies of your car, truck, or SUV with low tones that stand out.

MTX engineers evaluate the "sonic signatures" of top-selling vehicles so they can design ThunderForms as custom acoustic matches. With "rotational molding," MTX ensures that each ThunderForm fits and blends inconspicuously into your vehicle. They're made of high-density polyethylene resin to curb resonances and deliver bass that's tight, hard-hitting, and way down low.

This molded MTX ThunderForm comes loaded with two premium-quality 10" Terminator subwoofers modified especially for amplified Thunderforms, with a specially-designed amp that puts out 200 watts of power. It installs in your 2002-up Dodge Ram Quad Cab pickup under the rear seat. The enclosure is seamless and airtight, with the correct internal volume to yield optimum bass response from the subwoofers. Hardware is included.

Features

Vehicle-Specific Custom Enclosure: This MTX ThunderForm enclosure is specifically designed to fit select Dodge Ram Quad Cab pickups. Please refer to the Crutchfield Car Selector to confirm fit for your vehicle.

Enclosure: The ThunderForm enclosure is made of molded high-density polyethylene resin, which dampens resonance and is rigid enough to resist flexing. It is an acoustic suspension (sealed) chamber.

Mounting Location: This enclosure is designed to mount under the rear seat. Note: The provided dimensions are taken at the widest points of the enclosure. Keep in mind that this enclosure is custom made to fit in this particular vehicle, so the enclosure will fit properly in only one specific location.

Electronic Bass Control (EBC): The EBC is a wired remote and allows you to adjust the bass level from anywhere in the vehicle. Installing the EBC is optional.

Low-pass Crossover: The low-pass crossover point is adjustable from 50 to 150 Hz for a seamless transition between the output of this unit and that of the other speakers in the vehicle.

Thunderforms

Written By Cahuna33, Phoenix, AZ on Friday, August 23, 2013

I have had the ThunderForm unit in my 2002 ram since 2007,it's awesome. The system really pounds. I have a pioneer Head unit and a Pioneer 100 watt stereo Power amp installed. It really vibrates my mirrors and the kids get a kick out of the massage they get sitting in the back seat. I highly recommend this unit for your truck. It turns quite a few heads because not to many people expect this kind of great sound come from a truck. I have had a few people expect to see a large bass box sitting in the back and see nothing. It is hidden well.
Pros:
Out of sight out of mind. You don't have to worry about anybody seeing your setup in the back. The box blends in well with the color of your interior. Fantastic sound. You won't be disappointed...
Cons:
There is none.

Great product, poor install experience

Written By Josh, Louisville, CO on Monday, May 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, great product once installed. Solid fit, great sound (w Kenwood deck). But I dock the product a star for sending the wiring harness with the power and remote swapped. I had to go get crimp pins to rewire the harness. How do you let a product go to the customer with QAing this (I blame the manufacturer, not Crutchfield. I called Crutchfield tech support and we had a good laugh over this lame QA, I sent them a pic). I could dock another star for the absolutely pitiful installation manual, as it makes no mention of having to wire the remote cable to your deck so the sub shuts down when you power down your vehicle. Good thing I know what I was doing. All of this aside, easy to do a clean wiring job and works great.

Great for bass

Written By JaredZ, Toledo, IA on Monday, April 02, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs work great. Hooked them up to my 05 Dodge Ram 1500 for bass. I was really happy with the results. Nice deep bass inside the truck, but doesn't have that "rattle 2 blocks away" sound outside of it. I ran the wires straight to my aftermarket cd player and didn't need to use the EBC. Instructions from Crutchfield made this an easy 4 hour job (including a new head unit) for a guy who has never installed a sound system in his life. Highly Recommended!!!!!
Pros:
Easy to Install, Great Sound, Great Installation Info provided by Crutchfield

1 question already asked

Hi. I have a 2013 ram 1500 quad cab. I know it won't go to the factory radio. But if I put an aftermarket head unit in will this sub set up fit under the back seat. I have a single bench seat in the back that folds up. No split seats. Just wanted to know if it would fit? [ Corey  Apr 03, 2014 ]
