Shallow sub, intense bass
MTX built the FPR12-04 subwoofer to give you big bass in a vehicle that that doesn't have room for traditional large subwoofers. This sub comes in at only 3-3/8" deep, so it mounts in low-profile enclosures that'll fit almost anywhere. This sub handles up to 400 watts RMS, and delivers the kind of powerful performance that you'd usually only experience with a traditional sub. A pair of these 4-ohm subs work great with your mono amp, or you can power a single sub with a 2-channel amp that's bridged to mono.
You can push the FPR12-04 hard, and it's built to survive in the tough car environment. A lightweight aluminum dustcap protects the polypropylene cone, while the rugged rubber surround offers long-lasting durability. MTX's unique Spider Plateau Venting keeps your subwoofer running cool during intense jam sessions. This sub requires a sealed box.
To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 300 and 600 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.
A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.
I have two of these speakers in my Mercedes E350 in a custom box I built myself, and I have one in a custom box built into a 2015 Jeep Wrangler. These are excellent speakers when space is at a premium. To get the best sound, these shallow mount speakers require 0.84 Cubic Feet of airspace in a sealed box, which is easy to get. For those not familiar with building your own enclosures, this means that these speakers will perform at their peak in a sealed box that is 16 inches by 16 inches by 5.7 inches (some other variables are important, but you get the idea). When you are looking to get great sound in a small area, and without worrying about how for the speaker's excursion could impact the installation, these are excellent.
As for sound quality, they have an great low end sound with stated frequency response down to 22 Hz. Also, you can get this speaker in both a 2 Ohm and 4 Ohm version, giving you options for how you want to link these with an appropriate amplifier. In my Mercedes, I have two 4 Ohm speakers wired in parallel (for a 2 ohm load), with each in its own sealed portion of the enclosure. This is run by a Kenwood KAC-9106D that drives both speakers nicely. In my Jeep, I have only one of the 2 ohm speakers run by an Alpine MRV-M500. Both of these amps drive the load very well without distortion.
Hope this helps you with your search!
Pros: Small size requirement for mounting, and small box required to get optimal airspace for sound. Drives with relatively low amplifier requirements.
Cons: My complaints about this are small, but I do wish that the speaker came with a paper template for measuring your hole cutout, and it is a bit ridiculous that the speaker doesn't include mounting screws.
This is a very well built sub. It is very solid and has an incredibly stiff suspension, nice basket and a unique spider design which enables the shallow mounting depth. It looks quite nice as well and includes a rear gasket for standard mounting. The instructions included are minimal, but then again it is a single voice coil sub intended for sealed enclosures of a very specific volume - not much instruction required. I slapped together a test box to their exact recommendation prior to building a more elaborate, stealth minded enclosure to see how it sounds. The answer? Quite good! It takes a little more time to break in than the typical sub, but I attribute that to the very stiff and unique design. Once it does, though, the sound opens up dramatically. It is a bit taut and shallow at first, but really smooth and digs much lower after about 20 hours. Performance is as advertised in a very small enclosure. The one knock on this sub is its sensitivity. It sucks up a lot of power before it really starts moving. If you are running a single I would definitely recommend the 2 ohm. Believe I am swapping out for that. However, even then you need a LOT more power to make a large difference in the overall volume. Two would be great and adequate for all but the most bass crazed people, and would get much louder with the same amount of power on hand.
All in all a very nice sub from MTX at an excellent price when compared to comparable offerings (JL $$$).
Pros: True shallow mount sub at an excellent price. Works in a very small enclosure for a 12. Looks good and is very solidly built.
Cons: Power hungry - 500 clean watts would be the minimum I recommend. Probably works best in pairs if space allows.
I was hesitant to go with a shallow sub and a smaller box, but having a smaller car I needed my trunk back! I had a single Kenwood KFC-W3013PS in a large box that took up half of my trunk. The Kenwood hit loud and hard and I really didn't want to give that sound up. Much to my surprise the MTX FPR12-04 Shallow Sub in a Atrend (.62 Cu. Ft.) box powered by a JX500/1D amp, gives me 90% of what I had sound wise and since the box fits in the "spare tire" area of my trunk, I get my main trunk space back! W
Pros: Heavy (~15lbs), the "Price Break" made it a great value.
Cons: The sub rattles a bit when pushed to its limits.
