Got a small vehicle but need big bass? MTX's Road Thunder powered subwoofer delivers strong performance from an optimized combination of sub, enclosure, and amp. And the compact cylindrical enclosure offers a great, all-in-one solution for getting good bass from a small trunk or other tight locations.

A rugged 8" sub and unique enclosure
The RT8PT powered sub features an 8" Road Thunder woofer that uses a stiff poly cone and durable rubber surround for reliable performance in the long run. The uniquely shaped cylindrical enclosure is ported in the back for loud, fat bass. Gray industrial grade carpet protects the enclosure, and showcases the MTX logo printed on the side.

120 watts RMS
The rugged amp mounted on the back of the enclosure delivers 120 watts of clean, stable power for convincing low notes. Low-pass filter and gain controls let you adjust the sound to fit your ride and your style, while preamp and speaker-level inputs give you connection options. You can control the bass action from the driver's seat with the included wired remote.

Warranty

5 Year Warranty Terms: This product carries a 5-Year Prorated Warranty with the following terms:

  • Years 1-2: Products found to be defective in materials or workmanship during the first two years will be, at Mitek's option, repaired or replaced by Mitek at no charge. The warranty period does not renew, but continues on from the original date of purchase.
  • Years 3-5: The purchase price of an item which becomes defective after the first two years and prior to the end of the warranty period will be prorated and credited toward the purchase of a new MTX product. The amount of proration is determined by dividing the original purchase price by the number of months in the warranty period (60), then multiplying the result by the number of months remaining in the warranty period.

Ok, so I am new to sound systems but I know my aftermarket stereo has the RC ports for this or w.e. so my dumb question is you still need to run power to the car battery with the built in amplifier yes? and if so does this come with all of the needed cables and wires to hook it up as is?
brian  Apr 03, 2014

Yes, you need to run power to the amplifier from the battery. This product comes with some wire hook -ups, but doesn't come with all the necessary cables. I'm glad I bought the separate wiring kit recommended by Crutchfield. -PANovota

I AM ASSUMING THAT "RC" YOU MEAN "RCA" PORTS. THOSE ARE FOR THE SIGNAL TO THE BUILT-IN AMP. AND YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE A POWER AND GROUND CONNECTIONS TO THIS UNIT. ALSO A "SWITCH ON" WIRE. USUALLY USE THE BLUE WIRE FROM AN AFTERMARKET RADIO. IT MAY SAY POWER ANTENNA. AND THIS DOES NOT COME WITH CABELING. THEY DO SELL AMP INSTALL KITS. I REALLY LIKE THIS UNIT. IT IS A GOOD DEAL.
charles  Apr 04, 2014
A
Installation is just like any aftermarket amp. You will need to run its own power supply. An adequate amp wiring kit should be under recommended accessories.
joshua  Apr 04, 2014
A
No, you will need to buy a small amplifer kit, you need to hook it to the battery with fuse and have a heavy ground wire. The sub itself does not come with any wires or rca cables.
chad  Apr 04, 2014
A
Yes you still need power run from the battery to the sub and will have to purchase an amplifier wiring kit seperately. The only thing I remember coming with this subwoofer was the high level wires and the long cord for the remote bass control. I had this for a short time in my honda hatchback and it sounded ok. I ended up switching to a JL audio sub and amp because it was a deal I couldn't pass up on Black Friday.
jose  Apr 04, 2014
A
Yes, you will need to run a separate power cable to the battery. This is included with the MTX. It is isolated and has a fuse inline. You will also need to run the wiring from the stereo to the MTX. These are special speaker wires and are sold separately.
randall  Apr 04, 2014

No unfortunately this amp/sub does not include the amp kit, You will need to run an amp power kit an 8 guage kit will be perfect With a good solid ground 99% all amp kits include all the wiring Needed to wire in an amp, you may need to get some ring terminals To harness to the battery and for a good solid ground. Crutchfield Should have everything you need to install an amp. Hope this helped.
david  Apr 04, 2014
A
Yes you still have to run power from the battery to sub. The wires do not come with the sub. Crutchfields have a few different wiring kits for the subs.
ed  Apr 04, 2014
A
You will still need a sub wiring kit. The RCA's will make the installation easier though.

should i get two of these or will that be overkill?

They put out a lot of sound. They are pretty loud. I have a pretty loud system and this pushes all the bass I need no matter how loud I am playing my music. You will be happy with one if your looking for great sound. If you need extreme bass (very deep) for hip hop don't buy 2 just go larger.

IT COMPLIMENTS A FACTORY SYSTEM PRETTY WELL. IT IS NOT 2 12"ERS BY NO MEANS. BUT I LIKE IT AND I CAN PUT STUFF IN MY TRUNK. NICE UNIT FOR THE MONEY.
charles  Jan 23, 2014
A
Depends on your vehicle, I put one in my truck 94 mazda extended cab sounds full and rich with bass I also tried it in my 03 mazda protege in the trunk and could not hear it all all, you might consider a 10" or 12" powered sub if your putting it in a trunk or a large truck. Hope I could help.
david  Jan 23, 2014
A
I found that one is fine for my 4-door sedan (in the trunk).
peter a  Jan 23, 2014
A
I would think 2 of these would be overkill in any thing outside of a suburban or very large SUV. The unit really packs a punch for an 8" sub.
michael  Jan 23, 2014
A
That would not be overkill. However. I would suggest with going with a single higher powered 10" sub. The mtx has nice punchy base but can't reproduce very low tones due to its size. A small Rockford fosgate in a sealed box needs very little airspace and can reproduce lower tones. This setup is great for a factory add on. But if you are considering two of these then I can tell right now it will not produce the bass you are looking for.
joshua  Jan 23, 2014
A
One is plenty in my extended cab GMC 1500.
matt  Jan 23, 2014
A
I am currently running 2 of these ,, Def not overkill.. but mutch fuller sound than only 1..
david g  Jan 23, 2014
A
One works just great in my daughters Celica
ed  Jan 23, 2014
A
It depends how much bass you want? I think you would be happy with just one.

i just purchased this and was disappointed to find out the woofer does not have a grill or any protection. is something available for it? i have no doubt it will get damaged as is

I to wanted a grill but didn't really look for one very hard as the position in the back of my Jeep liberty pointed the sub at the back door. So no issues so far. By the way this i a great little sub and i really like it. Thanks

I used a ten inch kicker grille I got online it worked great cause on this I didn't care about looks or anything. Worked great blocked hockey sticks, wood for camp fires ect.
kyle p  Dec 17, 2013

I got a nicely made 8 inch grill on-line.I believe it was around a buck (may have been on clearance).Put it on the woofer with a few dabs of liquid nails.I agree...odd that they didn't have one on to begin with!
jeff  Dec 13, 2013

Naw bo you can't buy one for it but just go down to the hardware store, buy some 12 and 24 Guage wire, bend it with some pliers to make a cover, tie the 12 Guage together with the 24, paint it black or whatever floats your boat and and screw that baby on there. Make sure you drill pilot holes and don't go for screws longer than a 1/4 inch. Takes about 1 hour.
dillon  Dec 12, 2013

THEY SELL A GRILLE FOR IT I'VE HAD MINE FOR LIKE 8 MONTHS AND HAVEN'T DAMAGED IT YET. AND I HAVE A LOT OF CRAP IN MY TRUNK.
charles  Dec 12, 2013
A
Hey Gary I have been running this sub now for 6 months and I am very satified with the performance. Very surprised at the bass this 8" sub puts outs. As for the grill, I have it stuffed under my rear seat in my truck so this is not an issue for me. I am sure this you can find a 8" sub cover for it.
matt  Dec 12, 2013
A
I have not seen one for it but you might be able to cit a universal grill on it though. Hope this helped.
david  Dec 12, 2013
A
Check Online. I found a couple 8" metal speaker grilles. Should be able to be adapted to this woofer.
