Our take on the MTX Thunder4000 T4104A

MTX designed the Thunder4000 T4104A 10" subwoofer to bring power and sonic depth to your music that full-range speakers can't begin to approach. The woofer's black laminated paper cone and foam surround combine for ultra-quick response, and its vented pole piece allows cone movement to circulate air around the voice coil for cooler operation.

MTX's Asymmetrical Linear Drive System (ALDS) employs a flat, progressive spider to improve suspension and an extended vented pole piece to smooth out the cone's linear motion. The result — high output and low distortion! This versatile sub delivers big bass from virtually any sealed, ported, or bandpass enclosure.

Specifications

Features

Cone Cosmetics and Materials: The woofer cone is made of a black laminated paper composite with a black poly dust cap.  "MTX AUDIO" is embossed in gray and red on the poly dust cap.

Strontium Ferrite Magnet: This woofer is made with a 27 oz. Strontium Ferrite magnet to yield a highly efficient speaker.

Black Foam Surround: The woofer's surround is made with durable black foam.

High-End Gasket Design: The gasket attached to the top of the woofer frame is MTX's new injection-molded polystyrene gasket. The hard polystyrene gasket is resistant to U.V. rays and it looks good.

Asymmetrical Linear Drive System: This system uses a flat progressive spider and an extended, vented pole piece to improve linearity and permit high output with low distortion.

Flat Progressive Spider: A flat progressive spider helps reduce distortion by precisely controlling cone excursion.

Extended Vented Pole Piece: The extended vented pole piece provides a more symmetrical magnetic field. The vent helps air circulate around the voice coil to keep the coil cool; this increases power handling and reduces distortion.

Enclosure Compatibility: This woofer can provide extended bass in sealed, vented and bandpass enclosures (see below for more information on enclosures).

Specifications

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by MTX range from 0.5 cu/ft to 1.0 cu/ft.  The sealed enclosure MTX highlights on their spec sheet is a 0.75 cu/ft enclosure, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by MTX range from 1.0 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft.  The vented enclosure MTX highlights on the woofer specification sheet is a 1.5 cu/ft enclosure, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.  A 3" diameter x 10" long port should be used with a 1.5 cu/ft enclosure; a 1.5 cu/ft enclosure with a 3"x 10" port has a tuning frequency of 33 Hz.

Single Reflex Bandpass Volume: The bandpass box sizes recommended by MTX range from 1.38 cu/ft to 2.89 cu/ft.  MTX highlights two bandpass enclosures on the woofer specification sheet.  One highlighted enclosure has an "S" value of 0.6, and the other highlighted enclosure has an "S" value of 0.7.  The highlighted bandpass enclosure with an "S" value of 0.6 is a 1.61 cu/ft enclosure, with a sealed chamber volume of 0.66 cu/ft, a vented chamber volume of 0.86 cu/ft and a 4" diameter x 5.5" long port.  The enclosure with an "S" value of 0.7 is a 2.08 cu/ft enclosure, with a sealed chamber volume of 0.83 cu/ft, a vented chamber volume of 1.16 cu/ft and a 4" diameter x 4.25" long port.

Note: The bandpass enclosure with the higher "S" value produces a more narrow bandwidth with better transient response; the enclosure with the lower "S" value produces a wider bandwidth at the expense of transient response.

The type of bass you get from your component subwoofer doesn't depend on the woofer alone. You'll need a strong, tightly constructed enclosure for optimum subwoofer performance.
