Priced per speaker

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Excellent Sub for tight spaces ...

Written By Stephen, Portland, OR on Monday, July 20, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this sub mounted in a slim box behind the bench seat of a 1992 standard bed Toyota Pickup. It's not a compact sub, so I needed to use two spacers (both 3/4" MDF). The recommended volume is .7cf so I added some stuffing to the box (about 1/2 pound). I have a Rockford Fosgate Prime R150-2 bridged to power this sub. It's rated at 150 Watts in bridged mode. This is an excellent sub with some good punch that really likes a lot of power. It's not too boomy and complements my Alpine 6 1/2"ers very nicely. For the price, I'd definitely recommend this puppy ... especially if you don't have space for a 12"er.

We have 4 of these subs in our Toyota Supra hooked up to a 1500 watt
rms amp and they hit really hard and sound very good and clean. Very
awsome subs for the price. Cant beat it.

Written By Mitch, Delaware on Thursday, July 02, 2009

All I can say is wow. for the price these are a steal. I bought 2 and built a custom enclosure for my galant. Run them with a MTX Terminator amp. They bang very hard for 2x 10's. Driving with them on for 20-25 at only 1/2 volume makes your ears sore for an hour. I am extremely happy with these. Only complaint is that they dont come with any mounting gear or gaskets, but both are easily solved. They give great quality sound too its not all bang bang in the trunk. I watched die hard 4 with them in the trunk and it was amazing. All I can say is that I am very impressed with price, performance, and quality. Buy these, you wont regret it!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got a pair of these. I am so impressed with these (once broken in) I have them hooked up to an old skool RF500s, and it is impressive for the size and price. Rocks everything I throw at it. Nice tight bass in a sealed enclosure. And now, for this price, how can you go wrong?!?! What a deal! I recommend these subs for anyone trying to get decent bass and wants to keep cash in your pocket. Spend the savings on a nicer amp, that will help any setup.

This is an amazing sub, its quick and responsive. You can feel every kick, the double bass sounds great. And when you want to they can rumble with the best of them.

Very clean

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a VERY clean and responsive sub. I opted to get only one 10" and mount it in between the back seats behind the driver, this delivered an extremely clean, responsive, yet heavy bass note through out the low end frequency range. It pounded out notes that you cannot hear with a stock "premium" system on my '04 impala. Besides it being very good on the personal finance, it bumps!

I built a box for my 07 chevy crew cab silverado. With very little space behind the rear seat these speakers hit hard and bass sounded good. So far no complaints and very good on the wallet. Highly recommended if you want some nice sound for a good price.

They Sound Much Better Than They Look

Written By Ronny, Lexington, KY on Tuesday, April 14, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first impression of these subs was not very positive. I didn't hook them up, I didn't listen to them. I just saw what they looked like and how they were packaged. I wasn't impressed at all and had already decided to exchange them. There were no speaker gaskets, no grilles, not even any screws.

But that was on Friday and nothing was going to happen until Monday, so I went ahead and just laid them into the openings of a dual-10 box and hooked them up to a dinky little 2-channel with 90X2 watts RMS. I was absolutely surprised! They didn't just sound good, they sounded REALLY good.

Since then, I've gone ahead and properly put them in with gaskets and grilles and wired them to a more substantial amp with 450 Watts RMS at 2O. They'll do justice to nearly any genre of music, putting the "low" in Flo Rida's "Low", filling in the bottom of everything from Country to Rock.

For what they cost, these MTX's are a great value. I don't think you can find a better sounding little 10" sub for anywhere near the price I paid for these.

Written By Stephen, Maumelle, AR on Friday, February 13, 2009

I recently built a box for my 2008 crew cab froniter. Mounting depth is
limited due to the lack of space under the rear seat. My options were
limited to either a expensive shallow mount sub with low sensitivity or just
one that would fit the box. I opted for this MTX sub since the mounting
depth is fairly decent andf most importantly, it would fit the box. All i can
say is WOW! I've been around car audio most of my life and have tried ever
sub brand viritually possible. This time I decided to try MTX. I have a Alpine
MRP-M350,wired at 2 ohms, powering two of these. They hit hard and are
easy on the pocket book. Try them! You will not be disappointed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs are completely worth it, even if they were to cost more! I have these in my truck paired with the mtx ta4501. When someone sits in my truck they are astounded by the sound and how hard they hit- then i show that they are only 10's and then it really impresses them. Great sub for anyone, i listen to all music, from rock to rap, anything in between and they are great.

See if you can get these. You won't be disappointed. They hit hard when powered with the right amp. Crisp, clean and smooth. They vibrate the seat and punch you in the chest. If you want power, this is it.

Written By Steve, Surfside Beach, SC on Thursday, November 13, 2008

I bought these because of the price, I figured these speakers would be adequate at best. I installed 2 of them into a sub box, designed to go under the rear seat of my 2001 GMC Sierra truck. I'm powering them with an Alpine MRP-450. These speakers sound phenomenal. I wired the sub box at 4 ohms to so I could get the full 400 watts from the amp.

These speakers sound amazing. I've had them installed for about a week and a half and still can't get over the low end I'm now getting. I listen to mostly rock and metal, so I can't testify to their performance with hip hop or house music, but I'm imagining they'd kill for that genre as well.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well I bought 2 of these subs to replace my blown kenwood subs..right now there in a bandpass box with the wrong cunic feet. But thank to the box instructions in the manual, i am building the correct box next week. they give you all the specs + dimensions for ported or sealed box..another thing i was worried about is would my 10G wire fit in the terminals..they did so it looks like the max speaker wire you can have is 10G..also for the price you cant beat it.
they bang loud in the wrong box so i cant wait to hear them in the correct box..
and i notice that alot of people say things and dont include what amp they are using so if you have an incorrect amp it will not sound amp is 820W max and 180W rms at 4 ohm..rec. watts are 112.5-245W.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been out of car audio installation for about 5 years after a 13 year career in the industry, ending with 5 years as an installation manager in Florida.
Mtx has been in the business of making quality subs for a great price for as long as I have been around, starting with my infinite baffle RED! Terminator subs in 1989... These 4500 series subs are by far the best subs you can buy in their price range. If you can pony up the scrilla for JL's, get them... if your wife doesn't quite get it and you need to be a little more money conscious.... get these and enjoy. I have 4 10's on an 800 watts bridged amp and they sound great (2.4 cu.ft. sealed in an '03 mustang convertible) try them... you'll like...

Just got these after my Thunder6000 had blown after 2 years of good
service, and I am instantly impressed. I only have one running at the time
due to not having a double box, but it produces some serious kick. This
combined with my MTX thunder 300 watt amp are makin some serious
bass. Definitly recomend these for their price, quality, and pure clean bass.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced two 2005 Kenwood 10's with these, and had 200w @ 2Ohm running to them. At first, I ran 100w x 2 to these subs, and i was not satisfied with the bass, it was muffled, distorting, and just sounded like the even cheaper subs they replaced. I picked up a Kenwood KAC-8103D with 500w RMS @ 2ohm Class D amp, and these subs now pound so much harder. Hair stands up and a soothing back massage with these in my trunk. they handle more power much better than the lower power, unlike my kenwood's. they have great bass at high volume, I haven't been able to max them out because of the rattle they cause throughout my car.

If you are on a budget these subs will defiantly add some quality low end to your ride if powered correctly. If you want to be heard down the block, look elsewhere.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Okay, how can anyone doubt the performance of MTX Audio? MTX Audio is on the top of my list. I've owned Rockford Fosgate, Sony Xplod, MTX Audio, Visonik, Alpine, & Kenwood (Currently in my car), and I have to say that MTX was the best sounding ever. I like to try new things so my other subs I've listed were great but it can't beat MTX Audio. I couldn't pass up this HOTT deal so I decided to get them. I didn't get them yet, but I KNOW they'll sound hot in my car. Don't doubt the performances from any of the subs that are sold on Crutchfield, if they guarantee their products are good, believe it, I'm satisfied with this store because ALL the things I got from them, were WAY cheaper than here in Hawaii...Thanks Crutchfield!

Loud and Clear

Written By beazer, Mattawa, WA on Wednesday, July 26, 2006

I put these in a pair of PA Speakers and tuned down the tweeter with a L-pad and bought a new mid. I currently don't have an amp to power them enough but they still put out. Puts out way more low bass than a pa woofer, but doesn't have the SPL, a sacrifice I am willing to make.

It's clear! Great price for okay bass.

Written By JJBrown, Columbus, GA on Friday, July 14, 2006

I recently bought these speakers and they are very clear. I have a 720 watt 2-channel amp that puts out 100 watts RMS. These speakers get low but don't hit as hard as I want them to. The price is great for okay bass, but if you want to beat down the block you will need speakers with a little more kick to them. I recommend these speakers to anybody who is buying their first subwoofers.

MTX "Thunder"...perfectly named

Written By Eddie, Seoul, Korea (U.S. Army Garrison) on Friday, November 04, 2005

I could only imagine how much this sub would thump the moment I mounted it to the enclosure by tapping on the woofer like a drum, but it gave off much more than I had ever anticipated!

I have one of these in a ported enclosure being powered by a Thunder342 amplifier in my Jeep Liberty. The bass literally pounds! The entire Jeep vibrates enough to knock some wind out your lungs and blur your vision. The best part is the bass is clean; no garble or static whatsoever.

This is the first MTX sub I have ever owned and even heard in life. I think it pounds harder, louder, and cleaner than any other sub I've ever heard. "MTX Audio" is definitely on my top ten list for car audio.

Great Blue Collar Workhorse

Written By catfishnate, Denton, Texas on Saturday, June 04, 2005

Nate here, and as an authorized dealer of MTX in my area, I have moved plenty of these subwoofers, and can tell you without a doubt that these are by far, the best (under 100.00) subwoofer money can buy. If you are on a budget, fear not settling for this subwoofer. Bass response is excellent for this price bracket, and power handling is top notch. Why am I reviewing this in crutchfield, well, I compete with these guys every sale, and I have to know prices of everything (even the stuff I don't carry). Do yourself a favor and grab a pair, then go pick on someone running tandem W0's.

Awesome Entry Level Sub

Written By ferrariwhite, Alvarado, Tx on Monday, March 14, 2005

Alright, I had ONE of these in my El Camino with 460 watts RMS goin to it. You would think that it would blow. Right? Wrong! It BOOMED!! My Power Acoustik amp really pushed this thing hard. Sadly, at a competition, it blew, but only after turning it up louder than ever before. Anyways, this sub pounded REALLY hard while it lasted. If it wasn't for my carelesness, it still would. Clear sound quality and bass. Highly recomended. Stay with the reated wattage, though. Especially for comp. use. I had to learn my lesson the hard way. I am very experienced and HIGHLY recommend this sub!!!

Enclosure Compatibility

Carbon-filled Polypropylene Cone: The woofer cone is made of carbon-filled polypropylene. Carbon adds strength and heat resistance to polypropylene; the result is reduced distortion and improved reliability. In addition, the cone is also very resistant to environmental extremes. The woofer uses a polyether foam surround.

Asymmetrical Linear Drive System (ALDS): The Asymmetrical Linear Drive System consists of a flat, progressive spider that improves suspension and an extended vented pole piece that smoothes out the cone's linear motion. The result is high output and low distortion.

Spider Plateau Venting: Heat from the voice coil is vented through metal-mesh covered vents that surround the back of the spider.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound on a high-temperature former to promote high power handling.

Strontium Ferrite Magnet: The strontium ferrite magnet yields a highly efficient speaker.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by MTX range from 0.6 cu/ft to 1.0 cu/ft.  The sealed enclosure MTX highlights on their spec sheet is a 0.8 cu/ft enclosure, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: MTX recommends two different kinds of vented enclosures, one is optimized for sound quality and one is optimized for high output. The sound quality box sizes recommended by MTX range from 1.25 cu/ft to 1.75 cu/ft.  The enclosure MTX highlights on the woofer specification sheet is a 1.5 cu/ft enclosure, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.  One 3" diameter x 7.25" long port should be used with a 1.5 cu/ft enclosure; a 1.5 cu/ft enclosure with a 3"x 7.25" port has a tuning frequency of 38Hz. The high output box sizes recommended by MTX range from 0.6 cu/ft to 1.0 cu/ft.  The enclosure MTX highlights on the woofer specification sheet is a 0.8 cu/ft enclosure, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.  One 3" diameter x 7.75" long port should be used with a 0.8 cu/ft enclosure; a 0.8 cu/ft enclosure with a 3"x 7.75" port has a tuning frequency of 52Hz.
