Our take on the MTX Thunder502

High-level performance is what MTX amplifiers are all about! The sound pros at MTX subject each Thunder amp to rigorous bench testing before they'll let it ship, and they pack each model full of features designed with you, the music lover and audio enthusiast, in mind.

The Thunder502's big output along with ThunderEQ bass enhancement make it perfect for powering a subwoofer: you get 500 watts RMS in bridged mode, plus a bass boost of up to 18 dB at 40 Hz! But the versatile Thunder502 is also ideal for driving a pair of power-hungry component or full-range speakers, with 125 watts RMS per channel in stereo mode. The continuously variable high- and low-pass crossovers allow you to adapt the amp for any job.

Heavy-duty, nickel-plated terminal block connectors transfer as much current as possible into the amp. Inside, high-powered transformers and patented PWM MOSFET switching power supplies deliver big power for dynamic sound. Intelligent Surface Mount Design isolates the various amp sections for greater stability and ultra-low noise levels. You enjoy clean, tight reproduction, even when you push your system hard!

Specifications

Features

Class A 100% Discrete Driver Circuit Topology: The preamp stages use Class A topology for low distortion and a high damping factor; the result is tight, controlled bass.

Power Supply:  This amplifier uses a patented PWM MOSFET switching power supply for maximum power output and protection.

Pure N-Channel Design: The pure N-channel design is more linear than typical N-Channel designs, so the speaker you connect to the amplifier will be better controlled. The signal travels through fewer parts so the signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced, the power rating is better, and the amp runs louder, longer.

Input Sensitivity: This amplifier has independent left and right channel adjustable input sensitivity controls.

Internal Variable Crossover: The built-in crossover, variable from 40Hz to 200Hz, can be set for high-pass or low-pass operation, or it may be turned off for full-range output. When set to high-pass, the crossover has a slope of 12dB/octave, and the output is stereo. When set to low-pass, the crossover has a slope of 24dB/octave, and the output is mono.

Preamp Outputs: There is one set of isolated preamp outputs for adding another amp. The output signal is can be set for high-pass or low-pass at the same cutoff frequency of the amplifier's internal crossover.

Thunder EQ: This equalization circuit is used to enhance the amplifier's low frequency response. You can add up to 18dB of boost centered at 40Hz.

EBC (Electronic Bass Control) 2: This amplifier includes an Electronic Bass Control Port (RJ-11 jack) that will accept the cable from an optional EBC (item # 236EBC). When an EBC is connected, you can adjust the bass level from the driver's seat to overcome noise and other interference. With EBC 2, multiple compatible amps can be controlled.

Intelligent Surface Mount Technology: Features substantially shorter internal and external lead lengths, reducing stray capacitance and inductance, which results in cleaner and more accurate musical reproduction with less noise interference.

Real-time Computerized Protection Circuit: The protection circuit makes sure the amp is operating within safe parameters for maximum power and protection.

Acoustically Seamless Turn-on/Turn-off: A circuit that prevents turn-on/turn-off "thump" is included to eliminate turn-on/off noise.

Iso-Feet: Four rubber Iso-Feet are attached to the amplifier. The rubber feet let you mount the amp securely, while preventing the mounting screws from coming into contact with the amp's chassis; this helps prevent ground loops.

Terminals: The terminals are nickel-plated, heavy-duty screw terminal connectors.

Performance Certificate: MTX tests each amplifier, and the technician records the "actual" power output on the Certified Performance Certificate included with each amp. The amp must meet or exceed the rated specification in order to leave the factory.
