Our take on the MTX TR5512-44

A bass feast for the ears and eyes

Let your subs do the talking. MTX's TR55 Series subwoofers kick it up a notch, bringing you louder, more impressive bass without sacrificing looks or durability. These subs feature a stamped steel basket, gloss black polypropylene dust cap, and a stitched rubber surround for high performance, along with a rubber magnet boot and gothic MTX Audio logo for great looks. But make no mistake, these subs were designed with one goal — to deliver great bass.

High-impact bass and wiring options

TR55 spider venting

The TR5512-44 12" subwoofer features a tough-as-nails polypropylene cone that'll handle up to 400 watts RMS. The dual 4-ohm voice coils give you extra flexibility in wiring up your subwoofer system. Special venting keeps this sub cool while it delivers superior low-frequency performance.

Priced per speaker

Very nice sub, solid construction and for the price a great bang for your dollar. I didn't give it a 5 start because it is not as musical as the JL that it replaced. I haven't pushed them to hard yet, but with my RF P300-1. And at 7 on the gain, it is taking the power as a champ.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i have two of these monsters in the back of my 1997 ford expedition. they pound better then anything i've ever heard. i have them wired to a amp and they pound. my next purchase will be the mtx 600xd amp. i want to run 1 per sub. i'll be buying them one at a time though. i also need to get a better head unit. the system is only as strong as its weakest link. these subs are the best.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Enclosure Compatibility

Cone Design: The woofer uses a polypropylene cone that features a gloss black metallic paint on the polypropylene dust cap with a raised MTX Audio gothic logo. The Thunder 55 series woofer offers better thermal management and increased reliability at high Sound Pressure Levels (SPL).

High Roll NBR Surrounds: The surrounds are made of NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber). The surrounds are stitched to the cones, providing added strength and durability under high SPL. NBR has the added benefit of being resistant to ozone and UV rays for extreme durability. The surround geometry maximizes excursion without sacrificing cone surface area.

Dual 4-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4-ohm voice coils that offer flexibility in wiring. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Voice Coil: Designed for high power handling and large linear excursion, the woofer's 2" voice coil is wound onto a high-temperature former with 428° F aluminum.

Asymmetrical Linear Drive System (ALDS): The Asymmetrical Linear Drive System consists of a flat, progressive spider that improves suspension and an extended vented pole piece that smoothes out the cone's linear motion. The result is high output and low distortion.

Spider Plateau Venting: Heat from the voice coil is vented through metal-mesh covered vents that surround the back of the spider. As the woofer travels back and forth, cool air is pulled in and heated air is pushed out.

Stamped Steel Basket: This woofer has a stamped steel basket designed to support the magnet structure and prevent buckling. There is a rubber magnet boot to enhance the look of the subs when reversed mounted.

Terminals: The woofer features two pair of heavy-duty chrome push terminals which can accept single or dual banana plugs, pin connectors or up to 8-gauge speaker wire.

Enclosure Compatibility

Enclosure Recommendations: For the best possible sound quality where space is a premium, MTX recommends using a sealed enclosure. For excellent sound quality with increased output compared to sealed enclosures (3dB or more), MTX recommends using a vented enclosure.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size recommended by MTX has an internal volume of 1.25 cu/ft.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box size recommended by MTX has a net internal volume of 2.00 cu/ft with a slotted port. The port slot dimensions are 14" high, 2" wide, and 16.75" long.
