My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm running a 10" Boston acoustics G3 @4 ohms with this little amp. I got to say, it's doing a great job. The bass is crisp and clean. It's great for mounting in small places. It's simple and easy, the onboard crossover is easy to tune and stays cool when being pushed. I'm not after serious bass, and bought my sub/amp combo add clean bass to my mid's and high's. This definitely does the trick and I'm sure this little amp can deliver a lot more than what I demand of it. It has exceeded my expectations.

Pros: Cost is great, size is small when mounting area is an issue, plenty of clean power!

Cons: No high (speaker) level inputs, no onboard fuse. (These aren't disqualifying issues)

Awesome amp!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was skeptic at first but decided to go with this amp. When it arrived in the mail, I was blown away at the size (really small!) and was wondering about the performance/power. I used it to power 1 12" Alpine Type R in a ported box and its sounds amazing! PLENTY OF POWER! This amazing amp along w/ free shipping (even to HI) and a free 4gauge streetwires amp kit what more could you ask for?!?! Thank you Crutchfield! Best customer service, best deals you can find!

Pros: Small: can practically be mounted anywhere Power: 500w RMS @ 2ohms. More than enough power to push my single 12" Alpine Type R with no problem. Amp kit: FREE streetwires amp kit

Cons: none at all!

After looking at the amps on here I figured I'd go with a Mono Amp. For some reason this one caught my eye. When I recieved it in the mail I was shocked at how small the box it came in was. I was even more shocked when I opened it. I paired this amp with the JL Audio MicroSub slot-ported enclosure with one 8" W3v3 subwoofer.

I drive a 2 door 2008 Jeep Wrangler and this amp takes up very, very little space so it's perfect for my vehicle. This tiny amp is clean, small, and powerful. I recomend this to anyone looking for an amp with a small footprint.

Pros: Small, powerful, clean sounding

Product Research

Mono Amplifier: The MTX TD500.1D is designed with specific features to power your subwoofer or subwoofers with a frequency range between 20 to 220 Hz. This amplifier is not designed to power a full-range speaker.

THD: The Total Harmonic Distortion isn't given at the rated power output, therefore it isn't listed in the specifications table. The manual does list THD as <0.3% at 30% of rated power (90 watts) into a 4-ohm load.

Protection Circuits: The TD500.1D provides protection against over heating, output short-circuit, and over/under power supply voltage.

Gain: The rotary gain control is continuously variable from 200 mV to 5 V.

Bass Boost: A three position switch adjusts the amplifier's bass boost; set to 0, +6 dB, or +12 dB. The boost is centered at 50 Hz.

Low Pass Crossover: The TD500.1D features a 12 dB/octave low pass crossover, continuously variable from 40 to 220 Hz. The crossover is always engaged (it cannot be bypassed).

Sub-Sonic Filter: The amp features a 12dB/octave sub-sonic filter, adjustable from 10 to 50 Hz. Ultra-low frequencies that cannot be reproduced by the subwoofer do not become sound but unnecessary oscillations, which affect sound by causing distortion. These frequencies also waste amplifier power and can cause damage to the speakers. The sub-sonic filter removes the frequencies below the frequency setting to improve the performance of the speakers by eliminating harmful distortion.

Power/Ground/Turn-On: The TD500.1D features screw terminals for power, ground and remote turn-on. The power and ground terminals will accommodate spade connectors up to 0.5" wide, while the Remote turn-on terminal will accept a spade connector up to 0.335" wide.

Warranty Note: MTX will add a year to the standard one year warranty (for a total of two years) when an appropriate StreetWires amplifier wiring kit is used with this amp (4 gauge minimum). In this case, the StreetWires kits include a 150 amp fuse, which should be replaced with a 60 amp fuse (item number 211FAFS60, sold separately) to match the requirements for this amp. Both the amp and wiring kit should be purchased on the same order and the usual warranty limitations apply (covers manufacturing defects, must be purchased from an authorized MTX dealer, etc.).

Line Level Input: The signal is input using the stereo RCA inputs.

Speaker Connections: The amplifier is equipped with two pair of speaker terminals, internally shorted together, making it easy to connect two subwoofers. They are screw terminals and will accommodate spade connectors up to 0.335" wide.

EBC: There is a 3.5mm EBC (External Bass Control) jack on the amp, but as of 4/22/12 a compatible wired remote has not been released.

5 Year Warranty Terms: This product carries a 5-Year Prorated Warranty with the following terms:

  • Years 1-2: Products found to be defective in materials or workmanship during the first two years will be, at Mitek's option, repaired or replaced by Mitek at no charge. The warranty period does not renew, but continues on from the original date of purchase.
  • Years 3-5: The purchase price of an item which becomes defective after the first two years and prior to the end of the warranty period will be prorated and credited toward the purchase of a new MTX product. The amount of proration is determined by dividing the original purchase price by the number of months in the warranty period (60), then multiplying the result by the number of months remaining in the warranty period.
