Value and performance

If you're looking to upgrade from your factory speakers, MTX designed their Thunder Dome series speakers for efficiency, so they'll give you plenty of performance even when powered by your factory stereo. And MTX made sure that all these speakers deliver extended bass response, from the modest 3-1/2" to the big bruiser of a 6"x9". Best of all, they're covered by MTX's unique 5-year warranty.

Throttle it up

The TDX68 6"x8"/5"x7" coax speakers from MTX deliver an efficient step up from factory speakers with a bonus: a pivoting silk dome tweeter that helps improve the sound staging no matter where you're sitting. These speakers are designed to reproduce extended low frequencies, so the thunder'll be rolling through your vehicle with rich, full sound. These speakers handle up to 60 watts RMS, so you crank the tunes up and still get clean sound. Grilles are not included – factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.

Product Highlights:

  • 2-way 6"x8"/5"x7" speakers (pair)
  • polypropylene woofer with rubber surround
  • 1" silk dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-60 watts RMS (120 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 45-20,000 Hz

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

These speakers sound good for rear speakers. Had to drill two holes in each side to mount though. I'm not sure if this is poor production from the manufacturer or if the stock speakers were designed this way to only use factory purchases. Should be noted when selling these speakers either way though that there will have to be modification to vehicle for these to mount.

Pros: Good sound.

Cons: Holes didn't line up.

Does not fit!

Mounting holes did not line up and I did not want to do custom work to make them fit my 2000 F250 SD. They might sound good, but I'll never know.

Staff was very helpful with finding the right speakers and wiring. A little bit of tweeking to get the fit right, but a noticeable sound improvement over stock speakers. The wiring was very easy with provided harnesses.

Pros: Good sound, easy to install, wiring provided, priced right.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used these on suggestion of a Crutchfield tech in my 97 F-250. A great improvement over the OME speakers that were still in the truck. Using a Kenwood head unit with only 22 W RMS per channel they sound good but will be even better with some power from an amp.

Pros: Nice wiring harness 'clip' that linked directly to the trucks (ford) speaker leads which made wiring a snap. Also included were 4 additional wiring clips with a 6" lead that could be used to 'splice' into the veh. speaker leads for a connection. 8 screws and 8 'e' clips were also included. Speakers fit into the cab corner cut outs w/o any problem.

Cons: Speaker mounting holes did not match up. I had to modify two of the speakers four mounting holes to mount them. The included screws were too large for the trucks plastic grill mounting brackets and had to provide others that wouldn't split the plastic. The included 'e' clips were not needed.

Very nice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted to upgrade the factory sound system in my bare-bones model Ford Focus. These speakers were purchased for the rear doors and they fit great. Sound improvement was noticeable over the factory units when using the factory head unit, but the real difference came with the installation of a Kenwood head unit. Very pleased.

Pros: Great sound, easy install.

Cons: None to report

This was an install on my brothers 96 Mercury Grand Marquis. I have used MTX subs and amps on my old 03 custom PT Curser and never had any problems. I installed the MTX TDX692 with an Eclipse CD5435 head unit (no amps) They sound good, but can use an amp to be better.

Great 2 way speaker ,big difference compared to stock, able to be powered off a aftermarket deck .my tweeters did not swivel,no biggie. Magnet is a tad big but with the use of their braket thats included in the box helped out ,great for clearness ,bass is ok for bieng a speaker...mtx is a great speaker manufacture always trusted them

Pros: Comes with everything you need ,great sound specially for the money, great construction ,nice minor bass

Cons: Only con is that the bolt pattern on this speaker...DID NOT MATCH my 04 tacoma standard cab door screw pattern...2 out of 4 match ,i made it work ,make sure to check if it fits your car bieng that its a generic speaker size and bolt patter...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have long been a fan of MTX products. I purchased the TDX68 based on brand reputation and cost. I know I was not getting top of line, high end speakers. What I was getting were direct replacements for the stock door speakers in my RV. Are they better than stock, yes. I used my RTA to do a before and after test. The frequency response was smoother and flatter than the stock speakers. The bass response also extended lower than the stock speaker. Overall sound was decent. Im using these with an 18w built in amp in an Alpine head unit. Would they benefit from an dedicated amp and HP cross over and a sub? Definitely, but these speakers more than fit the intended purpose. I noticed a small capacitor on the back side of the speaker. That was a pleasant surprise to see a "bass-blocker" for the tweeter. I have 1 complaint, there was no owners manual in the box. The speakers were supposed to have 20 degree adjustable tweeters, I could not figure out how to move them and I was concerned about breaking the tweeter from the center pole mount. So I was not able to experiment with moving the tweeter to improve the sound stage and imaging.

Pros: Great price, easy install, great brand, over all decent sound.

Cons: Could not adjust the tweeter angle, no real owners manual either.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good speaker for the money . Easy install with supplied instructions. Installed in front doors openings of a 2003 Ford Taurus. Bass is a little weak as svtgod noted but that could be due to the speakers being installed in the front door.

Pros: Clear highs and midrange. High efficiency allows them to play at higher volume with factory head unit.

Cons: Bass response .

2002 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good Speaker, excellent highs, good mids, not a ton of bass. But not bad. I installed them in a 2002 f150 I probably should have used the foam baffles for protection and a little more bass. I am using a ALPINE MFP-F300 to push these. Truck still has rear factory speakers. I will update this review as soon as I replace them. I suspect the factory speakers are making these sound a little muddy.

Pros: Warranty, Excellent sound for the money.

Cons: no as much bas as expected.

Features

Woofer Cones: The MTX TDX series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Tweeters: Each speaker features a 1" silk dome tweeter. Silk is lightweight and great for high frequency extension and efficiency. The tweeters pivot slightly within their housings (approximately 20° in any direction), so they can be angled toward the listeners to improve imaging.

Mounting Applications: MTX describes this speaker as a 6x8/5x7, it fits many examples of both applications. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit.

Warranty: Although the speaker reviewed and measured (taken from our first shipment) included information indicating a 1 year warranty, MTX recently changed to a 5-Year Prorated Warranty with the following terms:

  • Years 1-2: Products found to be defective in materials or workmanship during the first two years will be, at Mitek's option, repaired or replaced by Mitek at no charge. The warranty period does not renew, but continues on from the original date of purchase.
  • Years 3-5: The purchase price of an item which becomes defective after the first two years and prior to the end of the warranty period will be prorated and credited toward the purchase of a new MTX product. The amount of proration is determined by dividing the original purchase price by the number of months in the warranty period (60), then multiplying the result by the number of months remaining in the warranty period.
