About the MTX Terminator653

Alexander H.

It's time to upgrade

MTX is looking out for you. They designed the Terminator Series speakers to put out serious sound without you having to empty your bank account. If you've been dying to replace your burned-out factory speakers, but haven't been able to justify the expense, MTX takes guilt out of the equation.
Terminator653

The Terminator653's 3-way design offers a cleaner transition from the midrange to the high frequencies.

What a speaker

These Terminator653 6-1/2" 3-way speakers will take your in-car audio experience to the next level. The durable polypropylene woofer and Mylar dome tweeters are vast improvements over the standard paper cones used by factory speakers. With the sensitivity of these new materials, you'll gain more focus in the midrange and clearer highs, even from the power of a factory stereo. But if you have an aftermarket stereo or amp, you can listen with confidence since these puppies can handle up to 45 watts RMS. Grilles are included for custom installation.

Product Research

Features

Woofer Cones: The MTX Terminator series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Tweeters: Each speaker has a Mylar dome tweeter and super tweeter for clean, accurate highs.

Speaker Size: These speakers are marketed as 6-1/2"; they will fit in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings, but do not use the industry standard 6-1/2" speaker bolt pattern (then again, neither do many car manufacturers). In order to install them in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings, one option is to drill new screw holes. If new holes are drilled in the mounting surface of the car, no bracket is needed. If drilling in the car is not an option, the included brackets can be used, which have standard 6-1/2" mounting holes and the Ford non-symmetric four hole pattern. When using the brackets the depth becomes 1.823" and the mounting height becomes 0.894". The speakers will also fit many factory 6-3/4" applications. Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Specification Note: MTX seems to list contradicting power specifications on the box; with the other specifications they list 90 watts peak, but on the front of the box they list 135 watts max power. We've adopted the 90 watt rating simply because it's the more conservative figure.

Q
Have these speakers in my rear door and mtx components in front door and twetter. Looking for a 4 channel amp to push them?

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your speakers I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
I have a 2010 vw jetta and I Bought these speakers to replace my rear door speakers and they sound great but I would like to replace my front door speakers and they are midrange, so I was wondering if I could use these speakers instead of buying midrange speakers?

I don't entirely understand your question. These are 3-way speakers (tweeter, midrange and bass). If your Jetta has midrange only front door speakers then there would have to be tweeters (high range) and bass (low range) speakers elsewhere in the car. I also like these speakers and would think they would make good front door speakers. You may need to add an amplifier due to the power draw of four 4 ohm speakers.
cs  Feb 22, 2018

Yes, seeing that these are built as "3-way" speakers ie- "High, mids, lows", they do produce all three of the most common sounds necessary for a nice "Staging Area". In at nutshell- these are not subs, as some people might think. The Main cone is for some Bass Reproduction. In the center you see a Mid and a Peizo- these are for Reproduction of your mids and Highs......... These are Full Range speakers! hope this helps :)

yes they will

Yes they do on a Grand Prix. I didn't use the new grills that came with the speakers. I just mounted the speakers in the doors behind existing door panels. You'll need to cut the door panels if you want to use or see the new speaker grills

Q
Do these speakers have good bass from the factory head unit? I replaced all four factory speakers with mid-range speakers and regret not keeping two OEM for the rear deck, They OEMs actually have pretty good bass. Now my system is all 'bout that treble, 'bout that treble, 'bout that treble, no bass...

Probably not as much as your factory speakers. I've found this to be true upgrading speakers in several vehicles now: the factory speakers have lots more bass response. BUT; these MTX's will CRUSH the factory offerings in regards to clarity, accuracy, and power handling ability. Add a powered sub and you're there. The factory cones are the best compromise, but aftermarket upgrades and a subwoofer are an order of magnitude better. HTH.

These have decent bass at the lower wattage of a factory unit, but no very low frequencies. These truly excel in the mid frequencies where most vocals are. They have great clarity.

I love these speakers. I have these in 2 cars. 6.5 Terminators in the front, and 6x9 Terminators in the rear deck. I could have put the 6.5 in the rear as well with the use of the adapter these come with. I probably would if I had it to again, at least for one of the cars. The sensitivity level is 89db. I use these with replacement head units, connected with an Alpine KTP 445U under the dash amplifier which gives 180 watts total power, or 45 watts to drive each speaker. With, or without this I believe you will be happy with them. If you have 6.5 in the rear, and the front you will get that bass your seeking. Mind you the Thunder 6.5 are 2 ways, and have a higher sensitivity level meaning these play somewhat louder, to loud for me, but personally I like the Terminators, and are my favorite speakers. I have tried a whole line of various speaker brands, that I found fault in, and my ears tell me these have the most accurate sound for bass, mids, and treble. I hope this helps?.

I doubt it, John but it's worth a try. When I bought and installed mine I simply removed the old and replaced with the new. My door panels already had factory grills.
tim  Jan 04, 2015

My speakers were behind the door panel with the grills built into the panel, so I didn't have seperate grills, nor did I need these. So, sorry but I can't say for sure
rick  Jan 04, 2015

not sure. every car OEM is different. for my car, oem grills are part of door. I didn't install provided mtx grills.
aaron  Jan 04, 2015

Yes, mount the speakers without the supplied cradles and don't use the MTX covers.
