Overview

Our take on the MTX Thunder68

MTX doesn't make speakers that only deliver the goods in a sound lab. These affordable Thunder68 5”x7” 2-way speakers feature a durable polypropylene cone with a rubber surround that'll shrug off the weather and wear that come with living in your car full-time. Depending how low you need to mount the coaxials, you can swivel the soft dome tweeters up to 15 degrees in your direction to really dial in the stereo imaging.

Real world speakers

MTX doesn't make speakers that only deliver the goods in a sound lab. While no car speaker can produce bass like a large subwoofer, these speakers truly shine in the lower frequencies. With up to 60 watts RMS of power handling, you can add to their impressive depth and richness when you power them with an outboard amplifier. MTX's unique prorated 5-year warranty makes these Thunder68 speakers a smart buy.

Replace OEM co-axial speakers that I thought sounder pretty nice. These really sound terrific. Full range high to mid, a major upgrade. A little fabrication required to retain the original speaker grille but well worth the effort.

Pros: Great rage, nice price

Cons: None

Fits like they said....

They sound much better than the stock speakers.

Pros: The free wiring pigtail

Cons: They were not a direct bolt in. I had to drill the holes in the speaker a little to get them to line up.

Unimpressed

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With "thunder" in the name I expected more bass from these speakers. Treble is reasonable and I like the ability to put some direction to the tweeters. The woofers seem to have a reasonable amount of travel, but the bass is frankly weaker than the stockers I removed from my Mustang (basic 4 speaker system).

Great speakers

2010 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the factory speakers in my 2010 Mustang because I wanted more bass response in my system but wanted to avoid installing a sub if possible. Overall I am extremely pleased with these speakers. The bass is much improved and I now get the thump that I want. It doesn't compare to the bass you get from an actual subwoofer, but I was not looking for a sound that rattled my teeth or shook my rear view mirror. Installed these in my front doors and liked them so much I have also installed a set in the rear deck. Only issue was that the mounting holes for the speaker didn't quite line up with the screw holes in the door so I had to drill new door holes, but that was minor.

Pros: Excellent bass at a good price. Speaker components look well made.

Cons: None

Features

Woofer Cones: The MTX Thunder Series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Tweeters: Each speaker features a 1" treated silk dome tweeter. Silk is lightweight and great for high frequency extension and efficiency. The tweeters pivot slightly within their housings (approximately 15° in any direction), so they can be angled toward the listeners to improve imaging.

Mounting Applications: MTX describes this speaker as a 6x8/5x7; it fits examples of both applications, but the hole spacing does not match Ford 6x8 applications and may require drilling new screw holes. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit.
