Our take on the MTX Bass Package

This MTX package contains everything you need for great bass: two hard-hitting Road Thunder 12" subs already mounted in a sturdy enclosure, plus a classic Thunder amp to power your rig. And here's the best part — you'll still enjoy big savings!

The Road Thunder RT12X2D subwoofer features two Road Thunder 12" subwoofers housed in a sealed enclosure. Each sub sports a black polypropylene cone, a foam surround, a rugged stamped steel basket, 35-ounce magnet, and 1-1/2" voice coil. The sub has extra stitching around the cone, so the cone and surround won't split up when you turn up the juice. The enclosure is wired for 2-ohm total impedance, and handles up to 400 watts RMS.

The Thunder251D mono amplifier is designed for serious bass performance. Low frequencies require a lot of power, and this amp cranks out 250 watts to the Road Thunder enclosure! You'll harness all that power with the built-in low-pass filter (18 dB per octave at 85 Hz) and the low-frequency enhancement of ThunderEQ (a selectable 6 or 12 dB boost at 40 Hz).

Heavy-duty, nickel-plated terminal block connectors help transfer as much current as possible into the amp. Intelligent Surface Mount Technology ensures greater operating stability and low noise levels. The MOSFET-fueled Adaptive Class D design produces major power from a small chassis, with minimal heat buildup. You get more volume with less distortion for deep, pounding bass, no matter how loud you like it.

Amplifier Features

Patented PWM MOSFET Switching Power Supply: This type of power supply is used for maximum power output and protection.

Adaptive Class D Technology: While typical Class D amps tend to generate high frequency energy that must be filtered to prevent harmonic interference in the FM radio frequency range, Adaptive Class D Technology directs the amp's switching energy away from FM radio ranges as the amp's load and output increases. This improves the amp's overall signal-to-noise ratio and eliminates interference generated by more common Class D amps.

Pure N-Channel Design: The pure N-channel design is more linear than typical N-Channel designs, so the speaker you connect to the amplifier will be better controlled. The signal travels through fewer parts so the signal-to-noise ratio is enhanced, the power rating is better, and the amp runs louder, longer.

Low Impedance, High Power Transformers: The low impedance, high power transformers provide more power and produce less heat.

Smart-Engage: If you're planning to keep your factory radio and use the amp's speaker level inputs, Smart-Engage senses the source voltage from the factory radio, meaning you won't have to run a separate turn-on lead and won't necessarily have to remove the factory radio during installation.

Real-time Computerized Protection Circuit: The protection circuit makes sure your amp is operating within safe parameters for maximum power and protection.

Acoustically Seamless Turn-on/Turn-off: A circuit that prevents turn-on/turn-off "thump" is included to eliminate turn-on/off noise.

Iso-Feet: Four rubber Iso-Feet are attached to the amplifier. The rubber feet let you mount the amp securely, while preventing the mounting screws from coming into contact with the amp's chassis.

RCA Outputs: In addition to the set of preamp inputs, there is a set of buffered RCA preamp outputs, providing a full-range stereo signal. The outputs allow you to daisy-chain one bass amplifier to another.

Intelligent Surface Mount Technology: The Intelligent Surface Mount Technology features substantially shorter internal and external lead lengths, reducing stray capacitance and inductance, which results in cleaner and more accurate musical reproduction with less noise interference.

Thunder EQ: Thunder EQ is a selectable Bass Boost (0 dB, +6 dB, +12 dB) centered at 40 Hz.

Crossover: This amplifier is equipped with a fixed 85 Hz, 18 dB/octave, low-pass crossover that is always active.

Terminals: The terminals are nickel-plated, heavy-duty screw terminal connectors.

Performance Certificate: MTX tests each amplifier, and the technician records the "actual" power output on the Certified Performance Certificate included with each amp. The amp must meet or exceed the rated specification in order to leave the factory.

Amplifier Specifications

Dynamic Power Measured at 14.4 Volts DC:
  • 125 Watts x 1 into a 4 Ohm load
  • 250 Watts x 1 into a 2 Ohm load

RMS Power Measured at 12.5 Volts DC:

  • 80 Watts x 1 into a 4 Ohm load
  • 160 Watts x 1 into a 2 Ohm load

Amplifier Inputs and Outputs

Left Side of Amplifier:

  • Input: left and right RCA audio jacks
  • Output: left and right RCA audio jacks
  • Speaker Level Input: a 4-pin input for use with the included speaker-level input harness

Right Side of Amplifier:

  • +BATT: (power): screw terminal (terminal is 0.54" wide)
  • REM (remote turn-on): (terminal is 0.35" wide)
  • GND (ground): screw terminal (terminal is 0.54" wide)
  • Speaker Terminals: there are two sets of terminals (labeled Speaker 1 and Speaker 2), but they are wired internally in parallel and they provide mono output (terminals are 0.35" wide)

Enclosure Features

Enclosure Impedance: The enclosure is loaded with two 12" Road Thunder woofers. The woofers are wired to present the amplifier with a 2-ohm mono load.

Woofer Cones: The woofer cones are constructed of polypropylene, which has a rigid structure for low distortion and accurate sound reproduction.

Foam Surrounds: On each woofer, a double row of stitching binds the cone to the foam surround fortifying the structural integrity of the woofer.

Spring Posts: The nickel-plated spring posts, located on the rear of the enclosure, will accept bare wire, pin connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Not Bad

Written By Kyle, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, May 03, 2005

I bought this speaker cab based simply on MTX's reputation. After receiving the subs i hooked it up myself. It took over 4 hours I would suggest taking it someplace. Anyway the amp is too small for the subs it is a 2 ohm cab so the amp puts out 160 watts rms. This cab will handle 400 watts rms. I suggest getting the amazing sounding subs and getting a bigger amp.

Powerful amp, Little magnet!

Written By Matt, Gand Rapids, MI on Sunday, May 01, 2005

My brother bought this package. The amp is a little tiny amp that can push a 400 RMS sub. On the downside the road thunder subs can't take the low bass. They only have a small 20 oz. magnet. These subs are bottom line MTX and DO NOT COMPARE to any other 200 RMS sub. I have a pair of other 200 RMS subs and just one of my subs can deliver more bass then both of these subs. I am a MTX fan but not of these subs.

ok but not enough

Written By Crun, Georgia on Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Well the amp is ok but it is too much power for the speakers because i put it on a lil jon track and the speakers could not take the power and i had my *panasonic* cd player only on 13 i think it was because of the box anyways. But anyways it is a good price for the starter person and i played the combo for more than an hour and it did not get hot its just that the speakers could not take the power of the amp. PERIOD!

Written By Brent, Hertford, North Carolina on Monday, April 11, 2005

I have played this for periods up 6 hours straight, and the amp does just fine. It has only gotten a little warm and never hot. These subs pound! Makes all types of music sound great and they have bone snapping hits. Thank you Crutchfield for the great package!

Written By J Mack, Anniston, AL on Wednesday, March 30, 2005

the only thing bad about this package is that the amp cuts off to were the speakers or anything els that is hooked up to it cuts off. the amp last for about an hour and then it cuts off the reason it cuts off is it getts to hot. everything else is great it beats harder than i thought it would if you get the right wires and stuff.

If you want your music to be loud, amplifiers are definitely part of the picture. But an amp can do much more than just get other people's attention.
