Versatile amp for almost any subwoofer system

If you're looking for high power for a subwoofer system, look no further than the XTHUNDER1200.1 mono subwoofer amplifier from MTX. This X-Thunder Series amp can drive a 1-ohm load with up to 1200 watts RMS, perfect for your multi-subwoofer setup or for a single high-performance, low-impedance sub.

Full-power (1200-watt) applications:

This versatile amp makes it easy to build up your subwoofer system, from 500 watts for a single 4-ohm sub, to 750 watts for a 2-ohm or two 4-ohm subs, and all the way up to 1200 watts for a 1-ohm system, without having to change amplifiers. You can even "strap" two XTHUNDER1200.1 amps together to produce a whopping 2400 watts RMS at 2 ohms for a competition-level subwoofer system.

Controls for superior bass tone

In addition to all the power available, a variable low-pass filter adjusts your bass for best results with your subwoofer/enclosure combo. You can use the variable subsonic filter to tune a ported enclosure to sound its best, or adjust the bass boost to add just the right amount of low-frequency oomph. A wired remote level control comes with the amp so you can control all that bass goodness from your front seat.

Features

Class D Mono-Block Amplifier: The MTX XTHUNDER1200.1 is designed to power your subwoofer or subwoofers. It is not designed to power a full-range speaker. The amp's Class D design and extruded aluminum top cover keeps the amplifier running cool.

Circuitry: MTX X-Thunder amplifiers feature dual-sided circuit boards with increased copper traces for maximum current transfer and to avoid power loss. Surface-mounted components increase durability and resistant to vibrations.

1-ohm Stable: The XTHUNDER1200.1 is capable of driving multiple subwoofers, configured to low impedances. The amp produces 750 watts at 2 ohms and 1200 watts RMS at 1 ohm.

Amplifier Strapping: Two XTHUNDER1200.1s can be linked together to achieve a strapped 2-ohm output. The amp has a Master/Slave switch which allows the amp to control, or be controlled by, another amp, depending upon the position of the switch. Amplifier strapping requires strict wiring instructions, which can be found in the manual.

Protection Circuits: The XTHUNDER1200.1 provides Thermal, Short circuit, and Over- and Under-voltage protection with an LED indicator.

Auto Turn-on: The amp features automatic turn-on circuitry which allows installation via high-level input without the use of a remote wire. When an audio signal is detected on the high-level input, the amplifier will turn itself on. The Remote Turn-on switch should be in the "Auto" position.

Controls

Input Level: The amplifier has an Input Level control which helps you match the amplifier's sensitivity to the signal voltage of the source unit. A small screwdriver is required to set the input level.

Low-pass Filter: The XTHUNDER1200.1 features a variable, 12 dB/octave low-pass filter with a 40Hz to 200Hz cutoff frequency. This allows you to tune the amplifier to the frequency response of the speaker(s) you are driving. A small screwdriver is required to adjust the cutoff frequency.

Subsonic Filter: The amp features a variable 10 to 50Hz, 12dB/octave Subsonic Filter. Ultra-low frequencies that cannot be reproduced by a subwoofer do not become sound but become unnecessary oscillations, which affect sound by causing distortion. These frequencies also waste amplifier power and can cause damage to speakers. The Subsonic Filter cuts the signals below the selected frequency to improve the performance of the speakers by eliminating harmful distortion.

Bass Boost: The amplifier's bass boost is adjustable from 0-18dB at 45Hz.

Electronic Bass Control (EBC): The MTX XTHUNDER1200.1 comes with a wired Electronic Bass Control which allows you to adjust the output of the amplifier from the driver's seat. The module is designed to be mounted underneath your vehicle's dash within arm's length so its easily accessible. The EBC connects to the amplifier using the supplied 16.5' cable. The wired remote bass knob measures 1.832" wide (2.593" with mounting tabs) x 0.982" tall x 1.551" deep.

Connections

Power/Ground/Turn-On Connections: The XTHUNDER1200.1 features set-screw terminals for the Power, Ground and Remote turn-on lead. The terminals can be tightened/loosened with the supplied 3mm and 2.5mm Allen wrenches. The Power and Ground terminals will accommodate up to a 4 AWG wire. An in-line fuse holder with a 120A fuse (or next highest available) should be placed on the power wire within 18" of the positive battery terminal. Typically, an 18 AWG turn-on lead is included with most amp wiring kits. If using the Speaker Level Input, no turn-on lead is needed.

RCA Inputs: The RCA input jacks are for connecting source units with preamp outputs. The low-level input sensitivity range is 200mV to 5V. When using the RCA inputs, you should place the Remote Turn-on switch to the "EXT" position.

RCA Outputs: The amp includes a pair of RCA output jacks that pass through the signal from the RCA inputs. These outputs are unfiltered, unaffected by the amp's low-pass filter and bass boost circuits. This output allows you to daisy-chain another amplifier without running another RCA patch cable from the head unit.

Speaker Level Input: The XTHUNDER1200.1 comes with a speaker level input harness, allowing you to connect a factory radio or a receiver with no preamp outputs. After splicing left and right speaker wires to the speaker-level input harness, the harness plugs into the amplifier's Molex connection. When using the speaker-level inputs, the amp automatically turns on when it senses signal from the head unit, eliminating the need for a remote turn-on connection. In many cases, this feature will allow you to install the amplifier without removing your radio. The Remote Turn-on switch should be in the "Auto" position.

Speaker Connections: The amplifier is equipped with a pair of speaker terminals for an easy subwoofer connection. The set-screw speaker terminals will accommodate 12 to 8-gauge speaker wire, and can be tightened/loosened with the supplied 2.5mm Allen wrench.

Remote: The amp has an RJ-25 jack for connecting the supplied Electronic Bass Control cable.

Fuses: The amplifier is equipped with three 40-amp ATC-type fuses.
