Overview

Our take on the XTC 4"x6" Speaker Baffles

Waterproof foam baffles from XTC fit behind speakers to keep them clean and dry. They compress easily to fit the installation, and form a mounting seal that can reduce panel vibration. Use these speaker baffles along with a Dynamat kit when you install your new speakers, and you'll enjoy improved sound and performance.

These baffles will protect your speakers. In many applications we recommend that you cut a hole in the bottom of the baffle, or remove the entire bottom of the baffle, to maintain good bass response while still protecting your speaker from dirt and water damage. Put the 4x6 baffle in the dash of a 2001 Wrangler. They capture the sound from the back of the speakers and force it out. Kicker speakers sound better and have more volume

Fit very well in factory door speaker holes.

Pros: Fit great, tighten the sound.

Cons: You have to cut your own slit to connect the wires. Not really an issue, but creates a chance that you may make the hole too big.

Perfect for stopping that metal echo off ur door panel. For the money, it makes the speakers you buy sound like u paid a lot more. They also added a better sounding bass to my 6.5" In the doors. wish there where speaker terminals on them so they could be perfectly sealed

Pros: Inexpensive huge gain for budget speakers

Cons: Have to poke small hole for speaker wire then seal it if you're in to that.

Pros: it was free with the purchase of the 4x6 speakers, and protects your speakers.

They seem to improve the sound from the Polk Audio db461s in the c-pillars in my 2013 Silverado and they eliminate the vibration I was getting without them. I cut out the bottoms to clear the leads and improve the bass a bit (you don't get much of that from 4x6 speakers.) It was easy to trim them to fit with a utility knife.

Pros: They do what they're supposed to do.

Cons: None so far.

I bought these speakers to replace the worn out ones in my '06 pickup. The sound is crisp and clear and volume is way more than I'll ever need. For 4x6 speakers the frequency range is excellent, even for my 60 year old ears

Helped decrease the vibrations that could have been caused by the bass and the door. Is a good insulator for vibration and I think adds to the depth of bass heard from the relatively small speaker itself. It does not dissipate through the door frame.

These were a recommended addition from Crutchfield when replacing the speakers in our 2003 Silverado extended cab. Do like the idea that moisture shouldn't be able to get to the back side of the speakers; not 100% sold that they help with bass response. Course 4x6 speakers, to me seem to be more like an oversized tweeter.

Pros: Keeps moisture from getting to the back side of speakers. Cheap price to pay to extend the life of replacement speakers.

Warmer sound in my 88 Trans Am

Written by: CLL1 from Douglasville GA on September 9, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am happy! I have used these baffles in varying sizes over the years with good results. I put a new set of Polk's in my 88 Trans Am I've had since new. The new speakers were much clearer than the stockers, but I found them a bit bright and tinny for my liking. I installed these baffles all the way around and I am pleased with the results. Its not a radical difference, but they produce a richer sound I like much better. These need to be trimmed for a good fit, and ported (a small hole will do) so the speaker can breath and move as it needs to. Great product for not a lot of money that gives a speaker that "little extra" it needs.

Pros: Easy to use, easy to trim for a good fit.

Cons: Can be a tight squeeze to fit in some applications

I should have read the reviews BEFORE installing these. Like a lot of other people I installed them with just a slit to feed the wires through. BIG mistake, the speakers sounded terrible. The cone couldn't move at all, but the back of the baffle was vibrating back and forth like mad. After cutting a large hole in the bottom of the baffle, my new speakers sound fantastic. I cut a square hole about 2"x3" Shame on XTC and Crutchfield for not mentioning this.

2006 Chevy Silverado extended cab - used these based on recomendation of crutchfield tech guy on the rear extended cab doors. They worked, just had to trim the edges down a bit and smash them in the door (there just a tad to deep to fit with out squishing them). They functioned just fine with the speakers installed though and no strange noises or rattling, but could have installed the speakers without them with no issues, just used them because I already bought them.

Product Research

Features

Product Overview: These acoustic baffles are designed to be placed behind car speakers to protect the speaker from moisture and dirt which can damage speaker components. Along with providing a sealed chamber, they also form a mounting seal between the speaker and the mounting surface to eliminate panel to frame resonance. Baffles will improve door acoustics by reducing road noise and vibrations transferred to the back of the speaker cone. The baffles are pliable and can be compressed to fit most applications.

Protect rear door speaker and dampen some tinny noises and vibrations through the mounting point [ Jason  Dec 10, 2015 ]

I picked these to help with bass on the front dash speakers for a 2006 jeep Wrangler Rubicon r I have also picked a set for the 5 1/2 " speakers on the roll bar [ Raymond  Dec 07, 2015 ]
My rear speakers did not come with any insulation and the stock ones were trashed. My rear speakers vibrate under any bass application [ GREG  Jul 02, 2016 ]
I own a 2001 jeep wrangler, which has a tendency to leak near my corner dash speakers. I'm hoping these help keep things dry... [ Cory  Apr 14, 2016 ]
The baffles were recommended by the sales person to help reduce noise which may be present in my older vehicle. [ JACK D  Mar 14, 2016 ]

3 questions already asked

might be a good idea, as mine are in an 04 silverado king cab, and at full volume they will vibrate a little on the doors!, just haven't had the time to pull mine back out and do it, but it does make the sound better than just being in the door! [ JEFF  Mar 26, 2015 ]
The foam they are made of doesn't cause any unnecessary noises on mine, and have decent bass for a truck Baffle. [ KEVIN  Mar 26, 2015 ]
I didn't try that but by themselves they sound awesome and made a big difference. [ CRAIG  Mar 26, 2015 ]
I either purchased an isolation foam piece or they came with them. I can't remember, but make sure whatever you use doesn't impede any speaker movement. [ MARTIN R  Mar 26, 2015 ]
I didn't use the speaker baffles, they did not fit. Don't waste your money. [ WILLIAM  Mar 28, 2015 ]
No you don't. I made a small slit to run my wires through but no holes. [ ROY  Mar 21, 2015 ]

No you don't have to cut a hole in the speaker baffles [ WILLIAM J  Mar 21, 2015 ]
Thanks guys I hope this adds greater sound and Ross the rattle that my speakers have currently in looking for some better 4x6 to upgrade to because the jbl are great for Latino music and Rock like iron maiden and ace but not too good for artists like ice cube, they are overwhelmed completely by some songs and can't reproduce the bass correctly at higher volume [ Ricardo  May 04, 2016 ]
I installed new speakers in my 2005 Silverado a few years ago. Initially I didn't install the baffles. I immediately noted a "tinny" sound. I then added the baffles and the speakers sound great. Kevin [ Kevin  May 04, 2016 ]
Ricardo, I bought these for the back deck speakers in my 1987 Porsche 911 where I knew I had little depth and I thought I had an opening into the engine compartment. It turned out I was right on the first but wrong on the second. In theory, you would isolate the speakers from each other and produce perhaps a better bass response. In the end, I don't think I installed them because they wouldn't fit and the sound was good without them. [ Michael  May 04, 2016 ]
REduces any other unwanted noise or rattling they work pretty good [ JEFF  May 04, 2016 ]
I'm not a Car Stereo installation expert, but I do know pro music studio sound, and have installed numerous hi-end car stereo systems. That being said - these Speaker Baffles are well worth every penny! They really don't help the sound - they are primarily to protect the speaker cone and frame from water and moisture, both of which ruin a speaker over time. If I'm not mistaken, for a door panel installation, you are supposed to drill a quarter-size hole opposite of where any moisture is present - i.e. if you are installing in a door panel, you drill or cut a quarter size hole on the lower part of the baffle - thus any water that seeps in from the window seal will not reach the speaker. The hole specifically allows the air-draft from the speaker movement to use the door panel as a speaker enclosure, thus enhancing the sound. Just make sure you order the correct size (including depth). I hope this helps.... ~ S in Austin Tx [ Steve  May 04, 2016 ]
