Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjuction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Dodge Ram 2009-2013

Note: The CDR-02 rear-view camera is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Rear-View Camera: The rear-view camera view what's behind you on your in-dash receiver's video monitor when you put your vehicle in reverse. The rear-view camera also offers parking guidelines which can be disabled by cutting the thin blue wire on the attached 18" harness. The rear-view camera features a male composite video connector to plug into your aftermarket receiver's composite video camera input.

The male composite video connector of the extension harness plugs into your aftermarket's composite video camera. There are also power (red) & ground (black) wires that will need to be hardwired. Power can be obtained from your vehicle's reverse light circuit or from the +12V accessory wire of your aftermarket stereo (if applicable). The ground will need to be connected to your vehicle's metal chassis. In addition, there is a reverse gear pass-through wire (green) that can be connected to the reverse trigger wire of your aftermarket stereo.

Crux CDR-02 backup camera :I get the ground wire ..do I connect the green wire at the rca end to the backup wire on my alpine ?Then I still have a green and red and ground on the the other pigtail .ground is a given ..help with the other wires(green and red) it isn't clear what to do here..Frank

A
The green wire is a reverse gear pass-through wire. When using the backup lights as the power source for the camera, it can also be used as the trigger for the new radio so the new radio knows its time to display the backup camera video feed. If you got the reverse trigger from another source, you don't need to connect the green wire to anything.

Q
What happens when you need to remove your tailgate? With the wires going all the way to the radio the tailgate is permanently attached to the truck

There is a white adapter plug near the tailgate camera you can use if you ever need to remove you tailgate.

I tapped into the reverse light wiring
justin  Nov 19, 2021
A
You hook it up both places. It gets power from the reverse lights and the radio acts as the switch
richard  Nov 19, 2021
A
I grabbed power at the radio.
brett  Nov 18, 2021

Hi, I installed kit, in my 2016 Ram well over a year ago, I tapped into factory harness back up lights, I used my left tail lamp, i spliced in about 8" from bulb, works Great !
james  Nov 18, 2021
A
You tap into the power from the reverse lights.
valente  Nov 18, 2021
A
It's very sensitive to low voltage. I had it connected to my backup lights at first, but it didn't work properly until I powered it from a cigarette lighter port. Be careful though, as it's easy to draw too much current if you have something else plugged into the cigarette lighter at the same time as you're backing up.

Q
Does the camera come on when the vehicle is put in reverse?
mattalfieri  Aug 19, 2021

Yes, it does, the instructions laid out how to wire it properly. The power wire gets spliced into the reverse wire in your rsystem.
dara  Aug 19, 2021

Yes, but the quality is horrible at night

No
brett  Dec 11, 2020

You need the one with the wiring harness. I bought this one first and then had to exchange it. The unit is very voltage sensitive though so be careful about how it's powered.

Q
I have heard that the 19ft 1/2in cable is almost 6 ft short of reaching the back of the dash on the 2011 crew cab short bed. Has anyone else mentioned this?
dustin  Sep 08, 2020

A
I did not notice this issue. I installed mine on a 2012 Quadcab. I ran mine through the tailgate through an opening in the back of the bed with a grommet, (grounded it there at the back of the chassis), continued along the chassis, through a small opening at the back of the cab with a grommet, along the driver side door sill, and up into the dash. I had to coil up a bit of the extra. (btw, I also used the head units rear camera reverse option to power it.)

I had no issues whatsoever. Great product!! Great camera!, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and crutchfield as always. They are the best of the best to deal with.... loyal customer for life!
nick  Sep 09, 2020

I installed a rearview camera on my 2014 Ram Quad Cab, and had no problem with the length of the cable. I routed it down the left side of the frame and brought into the cab through a factory grommet, under the left front door trim, and into the dash to the back of the stereo unit.

Q
Is this handle able to lock?
michael  Feb 01, 2020

A
The locking mechanisms is part of the truck. So if your tail gate already has a lock then it will still lock. The camera has a hole in it to support the existing lock.
jo  Feb 04, 2020
A
Yes you take the lock cylinder from the old one and install it on this one
andrew  Feb 03, 2020
A
ye, as long as your old one did. It works very well.
richard  Feb 02, 2020
A

guy  Feb 02, 2020

You swap the current lock from your old handle to this one...is on the instructions !
william  Feb 01, 2020
A
Yes. The lock cylinder goes in it
peter  Feb 01, 2020
A
Yes, the holes in the handle slip over the existing locking mechanism.
timothy  Feb 01, 2020
A
Yes, the factory lock will fit in stock location. It is a direct fit for the original tailgate handle.

Q
I asked this question earlier but I wanted to be more specific. I have a 2017 Ram that did not come with a factory back up camera but it has the 5 inch touchscreen factory stereo. Does this camera require programming to work with my factory stereo?
donald  Jan 03, 2020
2 answers
A
No, the factory receiver should already be set for a backup camera. Here is a good video on an install. Look this video up for a good install "New Ram Tradesman OEM Backup Camera Installation" (you tube).
dara  Jan 05, 2020
A
Not sure, the wire is a simple video wire though. I'm pretty sure its plug and play with any sterio that has the video in port to plug it in.
todd  Jan 03, 2020
Q
Does this camera require programming when installed to a factory stereo unit?
donald  Dec 26, 2019
2 answers
A
No. Just wire it up and it works.
jo  Dec 27, 2019
A
I would assume not as it required no programming for an aftermarket system, it is a simple rca connection for the video with accessory and battery lines turning the camera on and off just like the remote to an amp.
timothy  Dec 27, 2019
Q
Can this camera set up be used with a regular back up camera monitor?
james  Oct 19, 2019
1 answer
A
Indeed it can. It an be use with any monitor that use a standard video cable.

Q
I have a 7 inch Kenwood DMX 7705S , will this fit ?
richard  Jan 06, 2019
1 answer
A
as long as you have the rca input in the back of the head unit for a backup camera ,and I think that unit does, the connections are pretty much generic and universal for this type of setup, and pretty simple and straight forward...if this is your first backup cam, most important thing is to spend plenty of time under the truck and plan your wire routing carefully..

Q
Is the rear bumper and Trailer hitch in view of the camera? I mainly use this for backing up to trailers.
nathan st.  Jun 05, 2017

Yes the hitch is visible while backing.
brian  Jun 06, 2017
A
On the Dodge pickup the tail gate angles down at the top so yes Im looking right at my hitch. Use it all the time.
arron  Jun 05, 2017
A
Yes it is. Works great for me hooking onto my boat and enclosed trailer. You can see the ball hitch and the back part of the bumper.
leroy john  Jun 05, 2017
A
Not something I really pay attention to that much ch, the hitch ball is in view. I can't remember if the bumper is or not I want to say yes. Had mine for about 4 months now and no complaints. Easy install took about 45 mins total, ran the wiring up the drivers side frame rail and through a rubber grommet in the floorboard of drivers floor pan.
joseph  Jun 05, 2017

I own a business that is constantly hooking up trailers. this camera gives a perfect view on tongue and ball alignment. Have this camera on two trucks, works great.
george  Jun 05, 2017

Yes I use for backing up to my trailer and it works great
