About the Crux CFD-03F Rear-View Camera

Alexander H.

Specially designed for your Ford truck

If you're looking for a backup camera for the aftermarket radio in your 2004-up Ford truck, Crux has what you need. This CFD-03F camera is cleverly hidden in a replacement working handle frame, so that you can mount a rear-view camera without compromising the rugged appeal of your Ford truck. Crux includes a cable that connects to the back of an aftermarket radio with a composite video input (does not work with factory radios). Once installed, you'll see a generous, well-lit picture of what's behind you on your radio's display, with a 170-degree wide view and excellent visibility for night driving.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjuction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

More details on the Crux CFD-03F Rear-View Camera

The Crux CFD-03F Rear-View Camera replaces these items:

Product Research

Features

Sightline Series Rear-View Camera: The Sightline series CFD-03F rear-view camera by Crux is specifically designed for select Ford trucks with an aftermarket in-dash multimedia or navigation receiver installed. Your aftermarket receiver must feature an integrated video monitor and a composite video camera input. Now you'll be able to view what's behind you on your in-dash receiver's video monitor when you put your vehicle in reverse

Note: The CFD-03F rear-view camera is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Vehicle Compatibility: The Sightline series CFD-03F rear-view camera is compatible with the following 2004-2014 Ford trucks.

Make Model Year
Ford F-150 2004-2014
F-250/350 2008-2014

Park Assist Lines: The CFD-03F provides parking assist lines on the screen of your vehicle's in-dash aftermarket monitor. These parking lines are there to assist you when backing up into a parking space. You can remove the Park Assist Lines by cutting the white loop-wire on the camera's attached cable.

PAL Selection: The CFD-03F's comes set to output an NTSC video signal. A blue loop-wire on the camera cable can be cut to change the video signal to PAL, when viewing on a PAL-compatible monitor or screen.

Replacement Handle Assembly: The CFD-03F rear-view camera is integrated into a custom-designed mounting bracket and handle assembly which replaces the factory handle of your truck's tailgate. First you will need to remove the factory handle from the tailgate and then install the CFD-03F camera/handle assembly in place of it.

Power & Signal Connections: The CFD-03F includes an attached 20" cable and comes with a 26' extension cable terminated by a composite video jack which plugs your in-dash aftermarket multimedia or navigation receiver's composite video camera input. The video extension cable includes a 10' power/ground cable that's attached to the camera end of the extension. Power can be obtained from your vehicle's reverse light circuit or from the reverse gear wire of your aftermarket stereo (if applicable). The ground will need to connected to your vehicle's metal chassis. A Green reverse-signal pass-through wire runs through the extension cable, with one bare end at the power/ground connection, for connecting along with the Red reverse power wire, and the other end terminating at the composite video end of the cable. This lets you use the reverse wire connection to power the camera and trigger your aftermarket receiver.

Q
Will this work with the Alpine ilx-w650?
shawn  Apr 12, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey Shawn, this camera should work just fine with that Alpine of yours. The Alpine uses a composite video RCA connection to connect up with the headunit and the Alpine has two of those available so this will certainly match up.

Q
I have a 2012 f150. Will this work with a kenwood DDX57.?
mike  Feb 14, 2024
1 answer
A
The Crux CFD-03F is compatible with many cab style and trim levels of 2012 Ford F-150 Michael, to confirm compatibility please enter your exact truck details into our online Vehicle Guide, as we need to know those exact specifications. The Crux CFD-03F is compatible with aftermarket radios like the Kenwood DDX57S that have a composite RCA rear camera input, no worries there!

Can the handle body and lever be painted to match?
darkside  Jan 21, 2024

This would be possible so long as the camera section itself was not painted.

Q
I have an 8ft bed on 2011 f350 super duty will the cord reach from the tailgate to the head unit?
allen  Nov 07, 2022
1 answer
A
This Crux CFD-03F does have a 20-foot cable extension Allen. Depending on how you route your cable that should be enough length, but if you need more you can always add a video cable extension like the T-Spec v10 in the link below with some barrel connectors from the second link. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120V10R9V/T-Spec-v10-Series-Video-Cable-9-foot.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120RCABFN/T-Spec-RCA-Barrel-Connectors.html

donald marvin  Sep 18, 2022

The angle is not adjustable.

Q
Is it compatible with Sony XAV-AX5000 radio?
ethan  Jun 26, 2022
1 answer
A
If you have a 04 and up Ford truck that this Crux CFD-03F Rear-View Camera fits, then absolutely Ethan! The Sony XAV-AX5000 does have one rear camera input, that you can plug this Crux CFD-03F into, no sweat! If you added a front cam, or additional side cameras you would need to use something like this PAC camera switcher I've linked below for you, since the XAV-AX5000 has only the single input. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_541VS41/PAC-VS41-Camera-Switcher.html

Q
dose this camera have a center line when baking up to a hitch ?
michael  Jan 04, 2022
1 answer
A
I don't remember seeing it when I set mine up. I ended up clipping the wires to remove the lines as they were interfering with the ones in my stereo reciever.
theodorde  Jan 06, 2022
Q
What gauge wire does it use?
logan  Jun 20, 2021
2 answers
A
It uses the thinnest wire known to man. I have to redo the ground every year and have to be careful handling the ultra fine wire.
nelson  Jun 20, 2021
A
It's been a while but I'm thinking 16 gauge. It has been fantastic! One exception is the handle is not as robustas the factory handle. I didn't lube the latches frequently enough and it failed. I had kept the original factory handle and was able to swap parts
garth  Jun 20, 2021
Q
Where can i buy a replacement camera (camera only)?
tyler  Jun 19, 2021

We do not know of a parts supplier for Crux items and recommend contacting Crux's support by calling 855-822-1348 to check

Is the harness from the camera available separately? My cable was damaged

Unfortunately we don't sell the harness separately. If you bought this from us give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 so we can help with the next steps! If you didn't buy it from us you can contact Crux directly for a replacement harness.

Q
I will need a radio with a view?
ricky  May 30, 2020
3 answers
A
I'm using a Sony with 6.4" Screen and a video in "rear". I have a trigger wire for "reverse" and when i put the truck in "reverse" the camera signal come right up on the radio screen. So, i'm assuming you will need some device that will project that video in so you can direct the source to the camera. Once connected and in use, it is a very nice camera. Works well as I intended.
anthony  Jun 01, 2020
A
A radio that has inputs for cameras
nelson  May 30, 2020
A
You'll need either a radio with a video screen input or a separate video screen. Mine is installed into a JVC KW-M560 head unit and works well.
gary  May 30, 2020
Q
how well does the camera work at night?
zachery  May 30, 2020
1 answer
A
Very well, but I also have LED backup lamps installed on my pickup, so mine is very well lit.
gary  May 30, 2020
Q
Will this work on a 2004 Ford Excursion?
christopher  Aug 06, 2019
1 answer
A
This will not work on a 2004 Ford Excursion. I've looked through my vehicle specific cameras to see if I have any that will work, and got to say I do not have any right now. This may change later so I recommend checking with an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to check if this has changed

Q
Can you wire this so that it automatically turns on when you put the truck in reverse?
gregory  Apr 01, 2018
7 answers
A
Yes. I tapped off one of the backup lamps.
gary  May 30, 2020
A
Yes you can.
brad  Apr 13, 2018
A
Yes; but, you will have to connect it to your rear light reverse signal which is usually found under the driver dash. To avoid running a long wire from the end to the front, I spliced the reverse (white) light in back of the bed and tapped into it there. This triggers it to come on automatically in reverse. Has been working just fine for over a year with no issues.
jose m  Apr 09, 2018
A
I installed it and connected it to my stereo and it automatically turns on all the time in reverse. If the radio is off or playing it still shows the camera view.
bart  Apr 02, 2018
A
Yes, you just have to tie into the back up light wire in the tail light.
david  Apr 02, 2018
A
Yes
tony  Apr 01, 2018
A
Yes. You have to splice into the power wire leading to one of the back up lights. I used the left rear.
kirk  Apr 01, 2018

vincent  Dec 04, 2017

Q
What are the display and connection requirements?
w  Sep 20, 2017

The owners manual shows clearly the connections. The manual is available on crutchfield when you look at the product. I'm very pleased with the performance of my unit. It looks stock and has a clear picture. (As long as I keep it clean)
ronald  Sep 20, 2017

Head unit must have a camera in plug on the back of it.

A
If you add banana clip terminals or the equal for a disconnect and secure wires in a proper way.
michael  Sep 06, 2021
A
No. You have wire running into the tailgate up to your screen.
austen  Aug 07, 2017
A
With a basic installation, no. If you asked the installer or are savvy enough yourself you could put connections in at the removal point making it possible.
alicia  Aug 07, 2017
A
Yes. There is a quick connect on the harness just under the tailgate.
jason  Aug 07, 2017
Q
Does this handle allow my existing tailgate key lock to work?
timothy  May 02, 2017
7 answers
A
Yes. This is a high quality full function item I fully recommend. Don't freak out when backing up with the tailgate down but otherwise it's a very clear picture that is centered nicely and you will confidently back up with ease. I have a dark tinted Snug top on my bed and this is a savior to me. Buy it.
david c  May 04, 2017
A
Yes
mike  May 02, 2017
A
Yes. You'll actually put your existing lock in the handle before installing it.

Yes, plus you can put an electric lock like I did

Q
Does this have distance lines?
kyle  Apr 20, 2017
5 answers
A
Yes, and dependent on the type head unit you can actually calibrate it to the actual viewing distance.
gary  May 30, 2020
A
It does. You can have them on or off. I can't remember how to change setting with out reading instructions. The edge of where they start correspond well with the distance I need to open my tailgate. 2005 f150. But that would be relevant to your veh height and other variables.
alicia  Apr 20, 2017
A
yes
mike  Apr 20, 2017
A
Yes. I use this mainly for hooking up to my horse trailer. With a little practice you'll be able to get the ball under the cup on the first attempt every time. Instructions say to wire the power to the reverse bulb wire, I use a power switch so I can turn it on while I'm driving to check the trailer & make sure everything is still secure.
joseph  Apr 20, 2017
A
Yes, the default setting has distance lines. If you don't want the distance lines on your display, you can ground it out by connecting two wires (small white ones) at installation. The white wires are located on the wire loom, near the camera. I kept the distance lines "on" during my installation as I prefer to have them. On my installation, those wires ended up being located inside the tailgate, not far from the handle, just behind the access panel that I used to get to the handle assembly (2004 F150, new body style, not "Heritage").
