If you're looking for a backup camera for the aftermarket radio in your 2004-up Ford truck, Crux has what you need. This CFD-03F camera is cleverly hidden in a replacement working handle frame, so that you can mount a rear-view camera without compromising the rugged appeal of your Ford truck. Crux includes a cable that connects to the back of an aftermarket radio with a composite video input (does not work with factory radios). Once installed, you'll see a generous, well-lit picture of what's behind you on your radio's display, with a 170-degree wide view and excellent visibility for night driving.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjuction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Sightline Series Rear-View Camera: The Sightline series CFD-03F rear-view camera by Crux is specifically designed for select Ford trucks with an aftermarket in-dash multimedia or navigation receiver installed. Your aftermarket receiver must feature an integrated video monitor and a composite video camera input. Now you'll be able to view what's behind you on your in-dash receiver's video monitor when you put your vehicle in reverse

Note: The CFD-03F rear-view camera is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Vehicle Compatibility: The Sightline series CFD-03F rear-view camera is compatible with the following 2004-2014 Ford trucks.

Park Assist Lines: The CFD-03F provides parking assist lines on the screen of your vehicle's in-dash aftermarket monitor. These parking lines are there to assist you when backing up into a parking space. You can remove the Park Assist Lines by cutting the white loop-wire on the camera's attached cable.

PAL Selection: The CFD-03F's comes set to output an NTSC video signal. A blue loop-wire on the camera cable can be cut to change the video signal to PAL, when viewing on a PAL-compatible monitor or screen.

Replacement Handle Assembly: The CFD-03F rear-view camera is integrated into a custom-designed mounting bracket and handle assembly which replaces the factory handle of your truck's tailgate. First you will need to remove the factory handle from the tailgate and then install the CFD-03F camera/handle assembly in place of it.

Power & Signal Connections: The CFD-03F includes an attached 20" cable and comes with a 26' extension cable terminated by a composite video jack which plugs your in-dash aftermarket multimedia or navigation receiver's composite video camera input. The video extension cable includes a 10' power/ground cable that's attached to the camera end of the extension. Power can be obtained from your vehicle's reverse light circuit or from the reverse gear wire of your aftermarket stereo (if applicable). The ground will need to connected to your vehicle's metal chassis. A Green reverse-signal pass-through wire runs through the extension cable, with one bare end at the power/ground connection, for connecting along with the Red reverse power wire, and the other end terminating at the composite video end of the cable. This lets you use the reverse wire connection to power the camera and trigger your aftermarket receiver.

Will this work with the Alpine ilx-w650?

Hey Shawn, this camera should work just fine with that Alpine of yours. The Alpine uses a composite video RCA connection to connect up with the headunit and the Alpine has two of those available so this will certainly match up.

This Crux CFD-03F does have a 20-foot cable extension Allen. If you have a 04 and up Ford truck that this Crux CFD-03F Rear-View Camera fits, then absolutely Ethan! The Sony XAV-AX5000 does have one rear camera input, that you can plug this Crux CFD-03F into, no sweat! I don't remember seeing it when I set mine up. I ended up clipping the wires to remove the lines as they were interfering with the ones in my stereo reciever.

It uses the thinnest wire known to man. I have to redo the ground every year and have to be careful handling the ultra fine wire.

It's been a while but I'm thinking 16 gauge. It has been fantastic! One exception is the handle is not as robustas the factory handle. I didn't lube the latches frequently enough and it failed. I had kept the original factory handle and was able to swap parts

I will need a radio with a view?

I'm using a Sony with 6.4" Screen and a video in "rear". I have a trigger wire for "reverse" and when i put the truck in "reverse" the camera signal come right up on the radio screen. So, i'm assuming you will need some device that will project that video in so you can direct the source to the camera. Once connected and in use, it is a very nice camera. Works well as I intended.

This will not work on a 2004 Ford Excursion. I've looked through my vehicle specific cameras to see if I have any that will work, and got to say I do not have any right now. This may change later so I recommend checking with an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to check if this has changed

Yes; but, you will have to connect it to your rear light reverse signal which is usually found under the driver dash. To avoid running a long wire from the end to the front, I spliced the reverse (white) light in back of the bed and tapped into it there. This triggers it to come on automatically in reverse. Has been working just fine for over a year with no issues.

I installed it and connected it to my stereo and it automatically turns on all the time in reverse. If the radio is off or playing it still shows the camera view.

The overview Highlights state it is a CCD camera but a few lines down describe it as having super CMOS technology. It is either a CCD (which is has much better video quality) or it is CMOS (older and usually less expensive). It can't be both. Can you clarify which type of camera this is?

Yes. This is a high quality full function item I fully recommend. Don't freak out when backing up with the tailgate down but otherwise it's a very clear picture that is centered nicely and you will confidently back up with ease. I have a dark tinted Snug top on my bed and this is a savior to me. Buy it.

It does. You can have them on or off. I can't remember how to change setting with out reading instructions. The edge of where they start correspond well with the distance I need to open my tailgate. 2005 f150. But that would be relevant to your veh height and other variables.

Yes. I use this mainly for hooking up to my horse trailer. With a little practice you'll be able to get the ball under the cup on the first attempt every time. Instructions say to wire the power to the reverse bulb wire, I use a power switch so I can turn it on while I'm driving to check the trailer & make sure everything is still secure.

Yes, the default setting has distance lines. If you don't want the distance lines on your display, you can ground it out by connecting two wires (small white ones) at installation. The white wires are located on the wire loom, near the camera. I kept the distance lines "on" during my installation as I prefer to have them. On my installation, those wires ended up being located inside the tailgate, not far from the handle, just behind the access panel that I used to get to the handle assembly (2004 F150, new body style, not "Heritage").
