CRUX SOCGM-17 Wiring Interface

Overview

Our take on the CRUX SOCGM-17 Wiring Interface

Installing an aftermarket receiver in many late model GM vehicles means losing the chime that warns the door is open, along with audible safety warnings. The Crux SOCGM-17 GM Class II Data Bus interface lets you replace the factory receiver in these vehicles and keep the door chime and all audible safety warnings.

Connect the SOCGM-17 to the wiring harness on your new car stereo, mount the module in a convenient location, and plug it into the existing factory plug. Get the great sound you want, and keep all important safety features intact. This interface does not work with GM's Premium Bose® systems or Onstar®, and it won't allow you to keep your factory steering wheel audio controls. It will work with the standard Bose system. Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: If you do not use an interface like this when you replace your factory radio, you will disable the audible warning system in your vehicle. Crutchfield cannot provide a free wiring harness for your vehicle, and we strongly recommend that you use the recommended interface when replacing this vehicle's factory radio. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

What happened?!

Daniel from Visalia, CA on 7/28/2016

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing worked good from 02/2016 to 06/2016. Then when the weather started getting hot, the thing started having erratic behavior. Lol. I had to take my dash apart to unplug it because it would stay on after I turned the key off. When I came back to get in the truck, it was still making a gurgling noise. Is it defective? Well mine seems to be. Hopefully Crutchfield will send me a new one or something else.

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: Does not last long.

Easy to use wiring interface for 2004 Silverado

Andrew from Denver on 6/14/2016

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought that this device would allow the warning charms to sound through the stereo speakers like it does on the factory unit, but this has a small speaker on it that sounds the chimes and it sounds like it is a pretty chinsy speaker. Other than that it works great and was an easy straight forward install. The wiring matches color for color with the factory harness which makes it very easy to complete.

Pros: Easy install, harness colors match almost perfectly making it that much easier.

Cons: Speaker quality for the chimes is pretty sad, sounds like a poorly put together set up from the 80's. Otherwhise a great unit

Product started working great as soon as installed! Customer is very happy with install. They wanted to go with a cheap harness but after explaining the purpose of the interface to them, they chose it instead and saw the benefits of their choice immediately.

Pros: Does its job as described

Cons: Beware tight areas behind the receiver. Between the interface, stereo mounting depth, and wiring harness size, it may be a very tight fit.

Below Adequate

Samuel from Montana on 3/26/2016

2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

Worked great for the first 3 months I had it. However; recently, the door chime box attached to the harness blew its fuse and shut my entire vehicles accessory circuit down. I clipped that thing off and gave it a look, no way to fix it. I'm just using the adapter plug-in now without any warning noises (which I actually prefer). I don't plan on replacing it because my radio has very noticeably lower distortion at high volumes.

Pros: The connector to the factory plug is great

Cons: The chime box is a piece of garbage

I am so glad that I consulted the Crutchfield tech for information on the interface. I was prepared to purchase the stereo and installation kit somewhere else before I talked to him. He was not trying to sell me anything, just honest advice and information. This actually made my decision for me and will definitely make me a return customer.

Pros: As advertised. This interface keeps all of the factory settings working properly. I almost went without it in an effort to save a few dollars. I am so glad that I didn't.

Cons: Lots of wires to connect but if you take your time, it is no big deal.

Nic from golden, CO on 2/22/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked good for a few weeks and then it started going bonkers. The chime comes on while you are driving for no reason and will not shut off ever. The only way to make it stop is to reach in the dash and pull the harness and then replug it in. If the truck sits for a day the battery drains and the truck wont start.

Pros: Cheap and easy to install

Cons: Didn't hold up

Terrible Customer Service

Jacob S from California on 12/28/2015

2012 Chevrolet Colorado
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used this wiring harness in two different car receivers. I had it installed by a car stereo shop both times. The ignition wire was faulty, and my radios would often not turn off when I exited the car. The chime module was also a big problem with this harness. It occasionally caused my headlights to turn off when driving, and my parking lights to come instead. This is a big safety hazard and I recommend everyone to spend their money elsewhere. I bought the Axxess GMOS-01 02-Up Onstar Harness Adapter with Chime on a different online retailer's website instead, sadly it's not on Crutchfield. I had this wiring harness installed in my last car (and now this car) and have had zero problems with it. I contacted CRUX looking for a replacement radio harness, because it is under a one year warranty. It has been two months and they still haven't gotten back to me. This kind of customer service is ridiculous. I hope that if you buy this product that you won't have the same problems I did, because CRUX won't help you with them.

As you already know I'm sure, if you don't have the correct wiring harness for the Chevy Cavalier (mine is a 2002) the vehicles electronics, and lights won't work. The use of this harness has assured everything works efficiently and factory. I would definitely recommend this to those who want to retain a proper working vehicle without the hassle.

This interface delivered everything that it was described to do. The ease of wiring it to the radio was not even a challenge. The functions and, response really impressed me, allowing the same actions as the original equipment. I have used Crutchfield for many years and the dependency has never wavered or failed. Outstanding products. If someone want to replace or repair electronics in their car, I truly advise them to contact Crutchfield for information, and items that are cost friendly, easy to install, with total satisfaction. Awesome

Pros: Easy to follow instructions and guides. Color coded wiring to match the original equipment wiring, which makes it almost impossible to connect anything incorrectly. The interface matches the the vehicle connections perfectly.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out how easy this harness was to use. All the wire colors matched up identically to the harness on my JVC stereo. Wires were pre-stripped, and easy to identify. My only complaint is that the chime is not very loud - but this may just be because I did not mount it within direct ear-shot. I left it in the space behind the stereo.

Pros: Ease of install - worth the price!

Pros: color to color make up and almost everything else just plugged in to each other.

Cons: some of the colors of the stereo harness were had to determine the colors.

easy install, just plug and go. attached to back of cavity. No problems. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this product on a 2007 Chevy 2500hd Classic. Works well, the chime is loud enough for my taste. Maybe a little quieter than factory. Easy to install and easy to find a place to put it. On my truck I put it right behind the instrument cluster to the right side. Straight forward installation and I would highly recommend this product for any Chevy aftermarket stereo installation. Retained accessory power works great too.

Pros: Easy to install, enough harness length to put it in a good spot and loud enough for me. Works just as advertised.

Cons: Amp remote on wire is included in harness. No factory amp in my truck so I had to cut that wire and splice it to my head unit. No big deal though.

Had to install this module so the vehicles alert system would still work. No mater where I put the speaker it is so quite I cannot hear it over the vehicle running. It is very quite... If there is another option that could be swapped in to make the sounds go through the speakers like the factory stereo did that would be more desirable.

This is pretty easy to install; not really any more difficult to connect than a plain wiring harness. You basically connect it the same way. There's only two things I would change about this. I would make it a little smaller so it's easier to fit behind the receiver, and I would make it louder. The latter issue being more of an issue the the former, but it's still better than no sound at all.

Pros: Easy to install; no different than connecting any other wiring harness

Cons: A little difficult to get to fit behind the receiver; not all that loud

I own a 2004 Chevy Classic (Malibu). The CRUX SOCGM-17 integration adaptor installed very easily. I just attached the wires as I would on a normal adapter. All of the wires are properly color coded for the connection. The chimes on the adapter all work and at a volume perhaps slightly software than the factory chimes, but quite audible. The chime box has mounting holes for screws but there were a couple of "pockets" of space behind the stereo where I was able to just set it without having to mount it. Installation was very smooth and quick.

I replaced my factory GMC (without Onstar) double din with a IVE-W535HD. Wanted to keep my chimes for safety reasons. I have used many wiring harnesses over the years and was a bit skeptical looking at it online. Out the box, it looked like it was constructed well. Everything was soldered and shrink wrapped. The wires going to the speaker box seemed a bit short and I was afraid that the chime would be too faint installed behind the stereo and dash. I figured I could extend the wires and place the speaker box elsewhere if I had to. I installed the harness as normal and was able to point the speaker box toward the dash where light was coming through. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL! I can barely tell the difference and I have owned the truck for 7 years. I highly recommend this product. Having the chimes after an after market install is a huge safety feature!

Very good product. Worked out perfect for me. Very good instructions and easy to follow. I chose to solder all wires. That takes some time to do but was worth it to me. After installed everything worked as expected. ..RonH

Pros: Great product, Easy to install, Reasonable price

Cons: Nothing negitive to say. It simply works very well

Love the way it brings my door chime and keeps the Pioneer deck powered until the door is opened. Needed for aftermarket CD decks. Buy it!

Pros: Factory components retention

Cons: none

Just like factory

This adapter does exactly as advertised: provides the harness for plugging into an aftermarket receiver while retaining the warming chimes.

Pros: - Wiring harness makes receiver installation easy - Small enough to tuck inside the dashboard near the receiver

Cons:

Easy Install

A good way to preserve the factory chime in your non-onstar GM vehicle. The install was straight forward & it worked just as it was supposed to.

Pros: Not too bulky to tuck in the dash cavity. The cost was less than that of other options.

Cons: The chime actually comes out of a speaker in the interface itself; not through the factory speakers. When tucked in the dash it is audible, but a little muffled.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The price was great, the installation into the wiring system was a snap but two things that kept this from being a 5. One was trying to find a place to mount this in the 2005 Chevy Colorado. I finally was able to place heavy duty velcro and mount it inside the lower part of the dash. The second was the chime is quiet which is not a big deal but some people may not like it or might not hear it.

Pros: Price and installing it into the factory wiring system.

Cons: A place to mount it and the chime was quiet
