Wire in a new radio

Crux's SWRVW-52 interface ensures that you can keep the steering wheel audio controls and the factory amplifier (if present) in your Volkswagen when you replace the factory radio. Once you connect this interface to the wires on your new stereo's wiring harness, you've covered the power, ground, and factory speaker connections for your new stereo.

The SWRVW-52 interface also offers the reverse, illumination, and Vehicle Speed Sensor (V.S.S.) outputs that you'll need if you're installing a navigation receiver. The Crux interface is designed to work with the factory Volkswagen CAN-bus systems.

Note: This interface will retain steering wheel audio controls when used with Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sony receivers.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

2010 Metra TDi. Vol up and down/station left and right work fine. The phone button only lowers the volume.

Great product. Fit perfectly and all functions work without issue. Installed in a 2009 Volkswagen GTI to support an AVIC 8100NEX. Steering wheel controls were retained as expected.

The parts fit and work most of my steering wheel controls, it would be nice to be able to assign the steering wheel control buttons.

Did what it said, blue tooth worked well, I am happy.

Pros: Easy hook up

Prepare for a lot of twisting.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The differences between the various installation kits wasn't clear to me when I ordered my receiver and I selected this one based on the listed features. I expected something more plug and play but instead spent a goodly amount of time matching wires, twisting them together and wrapping them in electrical tape. While it worked in the end I had to go back and check my connections twice before everything worked properly. I would not buy this again.

Pros: It works

Cons: It took a lot of labor to get it working. There's no reason to use this kit instead of a better designed plug and play kit.

Not compatible with Kenwood DDX5901HD

Written By Anonymous, Colorado on Monday, April 06, 2015

Purchased to retain steering wheel controls for a 2010 VW Jetta with a Kenwood DDX5901 HD. It became apparent once I had the unit wired to the harness that there was no compatible port for the Kenwood steering wheel control connection. It appears compatible with the DDX8901. Crutchfield appears to be at fault for suggesting as "Gear You'll Need".

Crutchfield response on Monday, April 13, 2015 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our customer service or tech support teams right away. They can help you solve the problem and get the stereo installed and working!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an awesome interface! It is literally plug and play! Follow the wiring diagram to hook it up, set the dip switches and plug it in. There were no issues with installing it in my 2001 VW Passat.

Pros: This thing just works, I'm extremely satisfied!

Cons: Only issues are space constraints, there's alot of stuff to hide, but if you cut out the plastic rear radio bracing, it opens up plenty of room!

dont buy this for late model VW's

Written By simon w, Morgan Hill, CA on Thursday, February 19, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This doesn't seem to work properly with the Dynaudio system in later model VW's, no fader control, intermittent steering wheel function, neither Crutchfield not Crux seem to know anything about the system or the issues, lots of "try this and see what happens" suggestions which is great when you don't want to keep ripping your dash apart.

Pros: wiring instructions were clear

Cons: Doesn't work properly, very expensive for level of functionality Very disappointed in both the product and Crutchfield, which has been a real surprise for me as they have been excellent in the past.

Very easy to install. No need to run additional wires from the fuse box like most people do.

Pros: Very nice wiring interface radio plays a lot better w factory speakers than the old factory radio.

Cons: Only problem is it doesnt fit being the radio I had to cut out the plastic backing.

Good product, not simple plug and play

Written By John R, Illinois on Monday, December 29, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product works well. It was a little hard to install as the wire colors did not all match directly to the stereo wires colors. Also the wires had to be cut and wired together. All previous after market radios I have purchased were simple plug and play. It was a little intimidating, but I got it all wired in about two hours with three calls to Crutchfield.

Pros: Worked very well. Maintained all steering wheel controls.

Cons: Required connection of wires. All wire colors were not a simple match to the stereos wire colors.

Pros: Easy to use. Instructions are easy to follow.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had read that without this, the radio could drain the battery with the car off. Not sure how true that is, but picked it up anyway. The packaging says it doesn't support the factory fender amp, but mine is definitely still working. (Based on a little research, the factory amp turns on when 6VDC is on the front passenger speaker.) It was a little difficult to fit everything behind the stereo, but I got it all in WITHOUT breaking out any of the factory plastic. Overall a pretty easy install. My car doesn't have steering wheel controls, so I can't comment on that. Instructions were clear enough for me, but this isn't my first install. I think it's a bit overpriced for what it is, but I'm satisfied.

Pros: Sufficient instructions, easy install.

Cons: A bit bulky and pricey.

Crux SWRVW-52

Written By AndyB, Santa Rosa, CA on Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The adapter performs all of it's basic functions well. It simplifies the installation of a 3rd party receiver by allowing a direct connection to the factory wiring harness. It retains the function of the factory amplifier and subwoofer (My car has DynAudio and I wanted to retain this). It also retains the factory Steering Wheel Controls function... SORT OF. This is why I submitted a 1 Star review, like Michael from Arizona - None of my steering wheel control functions were mapped to the correct buttons. There definitely appears to be an issue with this adapter in SOME installations ?

So Ask yourself: Do you want to take a chance ... or should you just order another SWC adapter ?

Pros: Basic functions work as expected.

Cons: Steering wheel controls appear to work well for some, but not for others ... Do you feel lucky ?

im glad I got it

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works as advertised, maintained my steering wheel controls with my kenwood DDX371. NOTE: you will still need to splice the wires from this with the wires out of your new headunit....make sure you pick up some 16ga butt connectors or something before you start the install

Pros: works

Cons: instructions could be a little more clear

Pros: good quality part and excellent instructions. made connecting my OEM stereo very easy and the steering wheel controls are perfect. Used heat shrink butt connectors to connect this to my new stereo harness.

Cons: none

perfect solution for vw with monsoon systems

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It works! Mates the replacement head unit with the OEM amp and speakers. The Monsoon system in my old 2003 Golf still sounded great. I just wanted to add some features like bluetooth phone integration, iPod, Siri hands-free and HD radio to update my vehicle.

Pros: Turns the OEM amp on/off with key and head unit power so no battery drain. No running hot wires from the fuse box. Retains the VW stereo-on-until-key-removed functionality Very easy installation.

For the money not completely satisfied. The car has factory Bluetooth but the adapter does not utilize the factory microphone for the aftermarket stereo the phone button on the steering wheel doesn't activate the phone feature as I figure out the factory wiring I'll determine if they can actually improve their controller!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This adapter was used with a KenwoodDPX300U in a 2008 VW Jetta without steering wheel controls. The instructions were pretty straightforward. However, I did have a few questions about which wire from the Kenwood unit harness matched up with the Crux adapter. Particularly the power antenna adapter wire and the wire for the stock VW amplifier. Crutchfield's customer service was very helpful and had me soldering wires in no time. This adapter fits perfectly with the stock VW radio harness plug. Adapter and wires tuck in nicely behind radio and take up very little space. This adapter saves a ton of time, it will take you longer to solder the wires than it will to hook it up in your car.

Pros: Easy to follow instructions and perfect fit to stock wiring harness.

Cons: None.

If you have a VW - get this adapter

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read a ton of reviews on this adapter on a lot of VW forums and I would say most are negative or that you simply don't need the adapter. While that may be true, this adapter is made the installation unbelievably easy and you don't have splice wires and run wires to your fuse panel, etc. Why would you buy a nice head unit and not get this adapter, which if you purchase through Crutchfield, is half price when combined with a head unit? I have a monsoon system in my car and wanted to retain the factory speakers and amp because they sounded great. Well they sounded even better with the Kenwood head unit and I was able to simply run one set of RCAs from the sub out plugs to my amp. Sound separation using the factory installed amp and speakers with MB Quart subs and amp is unreal. I have roughly $500 into a system that sounds better than most +$1000 systems. Don't be cheap, buy this adapter if you have a VW!

Pros: Everything about it - made installation a breeze and the wire colors on the adapter match the wire colors on the new head units. Could not have been easier!

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked great no hiccups soldered every thing the day before installation was a breeze

Pros: Fit

Cons: had to spend some time on the solder gun

Written By Michael, Arizona on Thursday, February 06, 2014

This unit did retain my steering wheel controls, but not as I had expected. Volume is now controlled by the Seek/Search buttons on my steering wheel, and Seek/Search is controlled by the phone buttons. The old volume buttons now control source and band. I called Crutchfield and Audionics, the manufacturer, and in both cases the technicians simply read to me from the instructions that came with the unit, which I had already studied. No one seemed able or willing to help me correct this disappointing malfunction.

Pros: Steering wheel controls have been retained, though not as expected.

Cons: Inadequate instructions. No way to reprogram or customize the controls.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Operates as advertised. Allows you to keep premium amps from OEM system. You do have to make sure you don't connect unnecessary wires (I.e. Steering wheel control wire if controls are not present and this will cause new head unit to ignore the remote).

Pros: Works as advertised

Cons: None

Volkswagen Radio Replacement Interface: The CRUX SWRVW-52 is a radio replacement interface for select 2002-up Volkswagen vehicles (w/ CAN bus systems). It facilitates the integration of an aftermarket radio to enable retention of factory features when replacing a factory installed radio in select Volkswagen cars (with or without factory-installed amps). This interface is also pre-programmed for retention of steering wheel controls.

Compatibility: The CRUX SWRVW-52 is supported by the following 2002-up Volkswagen vehicles with CAN bus systems and non-amplified or amplified factory audio systems.

Make Model  Year
Volkswagen Beetle 2012-2013
CC 2009-2013
EOS 2006-2012
Golf 2002-2013

Steering Wheel Control Retention: The CRUX SWRVW-52 also features a steering wheel control output for Pioneer, Sony, Jensen, Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood, JVC, and Blaupunkt aftermarket head units. The steering wheel control output consists of a right-angle 3.5mm connector and a light blue/yellow wire (use the connection that your aftermarket head unit is fitted with). The SWRVW-52 interface module will work with any of the listed aftermarket head units, by setting its three dip-switches (see owner's manual for appropriate setting).

Note: The steering wheel control harness features two 4-pin connectors, two 3.5mm connectors (labeled Pioneer/Sony and Alpine/Clarion), and one blue/yellow wire (labeled Kenwood/JVC). You will only plug in one of the 4-pin connectors to the interface module and one of the 3.5mm connectors or blue/yellow wire into your aftermarket head unit you are installing.

Navigation Outputs: The CRUX SWRVW-52 radio replacement interface module provides a VSS (vehicle speed sense) and a Reverse Gear output to make installing an aftermarket Navigation radio simpler and less time consuming.

Amp Turn-On: The CRUX SWRVW-52 provides an amplifier turn-on lead for your vehicle's factory amplifiers (if equipped).

RAP: In most vehicles your aftermarket head unit will continue to operate with the vehicle's RAP (Retained Accessory Power) system; the aftermarket radio will stay on until the key is fully removed from the ignition switch. However, in 2010-up vehicles with premium sound the RAP feature will not be retained; the radio will shut off when the key is turned off

Wiring Harness: The included wiring harness features a 40-pin connector which plugs into your vehicle's factory radio harness, plus a 12-pin connector which plugs into the SWRVW-52 interface module. The wiring harness also provides the following bare-wire leads which will need to be hardwired to your aftermarket head unit's wiring harness.
