A great performer just got even better

We've always been super-impressed with Pro-Ject's Debut Carbon turntable. We think it's one of the best values out there for enjoying the warm, natural sound of vinyl. And judging by our customers' overwhelmingly positive reviews, they feel the same way we do.

A great performer just got even better

We've always been super-impressed with Pro-Ject's Debut Carbon turntable. We think it's one of the best values out there for enjoying the warm, natural sound of vinyl. And judging by our customers' overwhelmingly positive reviews, they feel the same way we do.

So when we found out that Pro-Ject was updating the Carbon's design, we were more than a little skeptical. Why mess with success, right? Well, we needn't have worried. The experts at Pro-Ject kept all of the key elements that made the Carbon so great, and added a couple of significant tweaks to make it even better.

What's new with the Carbon (DC)?

The first thing Pro-Ject did was to give the Debut Carbon (DC) a new power supply with a precision built-in frequency generator (like their Speed Box) — increasing the turntable's speed stability while decreasing unwanted motor vibration. This extra degree of accuracy and smoothness gives you a more focused stereo image, tighter bass, and greater detail than before. Then, Pro-Ject added new TPE (ThermoPlastic Elastomer) dampers to the motor mounts to better decouple and isolate it from the 'table's chassis, reducing motor noise and rumble to a bare minimum. The result is a turntable that delivers sonic performance rarely found on models in its price range.

Crafted for serious sound

The Debut Carbon (DC)'s one-piece carbon fiber tonearm provides greatly increased stiffness compared to typical aluminum tonearms, while reducing unwanted resonance that colors sound. The turntable's sturdy MDF chassis rests on shock absorbing rubber feet that provide a solid, low-resonance foundation. Its heavy 12" steel platter spins on a precision axle and bearing for excellent speed stability and smooth, silent rotation. The belt drive system and new TPE motor mounts isolate the motor's vibration from the chassis to prevent noise from being transferred to the cartridge, and on to your amplifier and speakers.

Get the best sound, without the hassle

Pro-Ject knows that turntable setup can be a challenge for the novice. That's why the Debut Carbon (DC) comes out of the box virtually ready to play. Its pre-matched, factory-mounted phono cartridge and tonearm take the guesswork out of installation, and give you optimized sound quality with minimal effort. A few simple steps to dial in key settings like tracking force and anti-skating, are all it takes to get this player primed and ready to deliver spacious, detailed music. If you've never experienced the relaxed sound that vinyl is famous for, what are you waiting for?

Features

Resonance-Reducing Construction: The attractive resonance-reducing MDF plinth supports a heavier 12" (300mm) diameter metal platter for smoother rotation and lower wow and flutter. Additionally, a felt record mat is employed for superior record support and coupling. The platter and plinth assembly sits upon four-point "O"-ring feet designed for energy absorption and the plinth-mounted motor is isolated by a new TPE suspension keeping unwanted noise and vibration to a bare minimum. The motor is even decoupled from the plinth to reduce vibration transmission.

Note: The turntable should be positioned on a low-resonance surface such as wood or multiple layer ply-board to avoid structural vibrations disturbing replay.

High-Fidelity Sound: The 8.6" single-piece tube carbon fiber tone-arm that increases stiffness while decreasing unwanted resonances resulting in a higher fidelity presentation of your vinyl recordings. Fitted to the carbon fiber arm is a true high-end cartridge, the 2M Red moving magnet (MM) phono cartridge by Ortofon. This arm/cartridge combination is capable of exceptional tracking and recovery of the musical nuance found within the record's grooves.

Belt Driven: The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon features a quiet running AC motor with a two-step pulley which drives the hub and platter via a flat-ground belt. The Debut Carbon supports 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speeds.

RCA Output Jacks: Plinth mounted RCA output jacks allow for the use of higher quality interconnects for even better sonic performance. Connect the turntable to the Phono input of your home receiver.

Note: If your receiver does not have a suitable Phono MM input, a separate phono pre-amplifier (sold separately) is required to connect the turntable to your amplifier.

Dust Cover: The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon comes supplied with a dust cover to prevent dust build-up on the turntable.

AC Power Adapter: The turntable operates off of standard household current using the supplied external AC power adapter.

  • Input: 100-240V~50/60Hz, 0.35A
  • Output: 15V - 0.8A (0.5A)

Colors: Available in high-gloss black, red or white piano lacquer finish.

Q
Are the feet height adjustable?
jamall  Feb 17, 2020
4 answers
A
IDK it set up perfectly balanced right out of the box.
doug  Mar 03, 2020
A
NO. Unfortunately, this means I level the turntable with little strips of paper. I had an older Pro-Ject turntable. If my memory is correct, it did have adjustable feet. That was a great feature. No idea why they wouldn't have continued it.

Q
A few questions: 1. Does "manual" mean I will place the arm on the record itself, and take it off at the end? 2. Is it easy going between 33 and 45 records, or?
steve  Jan 26, 2020
8 answers
A
Yes! You have to do both. You have to change the belt to different pulleys. It is a very nice turn table.
charlie  Jan 28, 2020
A
1. Yes 2. No
robert  Jan 26, 2020
A
(1) Yep, manual as in you place the needle on and off the record by hand. There is a queuing lever which is very helpful: it keeps the needle about an inch above the record, you place it above the spot you want to play, then drop the lever and the needle slowly drops onto the record. (2) To switch between the two speeds, you remove the platter, and place the drive belt on a smaller gear. It's definitely not as convenient as just flipping a switch, but it's not very difficult at all. It only takes about 30 seconds to do so.
jake  Jan 26, 2020
A
Yes. The arm is not automatic. Both starting an stopping is done manually. There is a little sway when the arm drops but after a few albums you get a good feel for where start the arm. You don't actually set the needle onto the album. The arm has a release to do that. As for 45's, I don't own any so I can't answer that.
steven  Jan 26, 2020
A
1. Yes, although the little cue lift-&-lower lever helps prevent clumsy accidents. But it's manual all the same. 2. Not hard. Just lift off the platter and place the belt at the drive end onto either the smaller pulley (33 RPM) or the larger one (45 RPM).
daniel  Jan 26, 2020
A
Yes, manual means that you must place the stylus on the record and remove it upon the completion of the record. I found time consuming to change the speeds of the turn-table. As a result, I have since obtain a new turntable that changes the speeds with the press of a button.
philip  Jan 26, 2020
A
1. yes that is exactly what manual means. 2. With the turntable itself you would have to remove the platter and then move the belt on the pulley and then replace the platter
reade  Jan 26, 2020
A
Yes, fully manual. Switching speeds requires moving the belt

Q
If using a scale, what is the recommended weight for the tone arm in grams?
raymond  Aug 10, 2019
1 answer
A
Comes with a weighted wheel that dangles from the tone arm which applies enough pressure to the vinyl. If seek more specifications try google search... I recall a person discussing on a audio blog or can contact manufacturer
craig  Aug 20, 2019
Q
I read in Amazon that the Pro-ject Debut (Piano Black) has a depth measurement of 12.6 which is different from the white and red which measure more. In the measurements you have included here they all measure the same. Is this correct?
gibran  Apr 21, 2019
1 answer
A
The base is 12.6" not counting the hinges on the back which protrude about .4" The cover tilts back when opened and can add another couple inches when fully opened.

I need to build a stand over another component. What is the distance between the four feet?
matthew  Apr 10, 2017
4 answers
A
12.5" wide, and 11" deep.
gregory martin  Apr 11, 2017
A
I will assume the "four feet" are the feet of the phonograph. With that said, there really is not a "distance" to be concerned with as usually the phonograph is on top to be easily accessed. Other than being on top, being the only requirement you are good to go!
gerald m  Apr 10, 2017
A
12.5 inches outside of the round foot to outside of the other foot
james  Apr 10, 2017
A
Front feet 9-1/8" BETWEEN feet. (edge to edge). Rear feet 11-3/4" BETWEEN feet. " Front feet to rear feet 8" BETWEEN feet. " Feet are approximately 1-1/2" in diameter.

Q
If I have a Yamaha S501 (has phono preamp), would I still need to buy another device (phono stage)?
william  Sep 09, 2016
4 answers
A
No, you won't need to buy a separate phono preamp since your receiver already has one built in. Although, most receivers with built in phono preamps, use cheaper, low quality components to save on costs. Even the lowest priced preamps offered by pro-ject or other quality turntable manufacturers, will have a dramatic effect on the sound quality your new turntable can produce. My advice to you? If you can't afford to get a quality separate preamp right away, go ahead and use your built in preamp for now, and get a separate preamp as soon as possible in order to realize the true potential of your new turntable.
larry  Sep 10, 2016
A
Hi there, if it really does have a pre-amp included, you might be just fine, but my son loves the way the Pyle Pre-amp sounds w his project.....it is very inexpensive and improves the sound significantly of a turntable. Happy listening! J
john lareno  Sep 09, 2016
A
You should be fine with the built-in phono preamp. It's output voltage will be too low to connect it to any of your other inputs.

Q
I was thinking of purchasing this turntable along with the Pro-Ject Phono Box USB. My question is would there be a noticeable difference in sound quality as apposed to buying the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Phono USB (DC) which has a built in pre-amp and usb connection. Also with the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Phono USB (DC) I wouldn't be able to ground it to the A5+ speakers that I would be using whereas with the Phono Box I could. On another note, somebody else asked if the turntable comes with RCA's and they were told no, but in the "What comes in the box?' description it says it does. Sorry this will be my first turntable setup so I'm trying to get as much information as possible. Thanks in advance!

I don't have the exact situation to relate to you. However, it is similar! I bought the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon turntable, with the intention of using the phone pre-amp section, of my Yamaha integrated receiver ( the Aventage RX-A1020, a fairly expensive unit). While it did sound good, it only whetted my appetite to see if it might sound better. I had read articles about how much difference the phono stage makes. So, I borought the Pro-Ject Tube Box DS from Crutchfield. It was even more money than the turntable! I wanted tubes in the pre amp, and the cheaper Pro-Ject was perpetually out of stock. So, I had them order the Tube Box DS. What a great purchase! It made the turntable sound really come alive through my system. It made a huge difference.
gregory martin  Apr 11, 2017
A
I had similar questions when shopping for my turntable and so I turned to Crutchfirld chat for help. It is first important to understand that it is always better to have a setup that is made up of separate components instead of one that combines them. I was told that the Phono Box USB had a better phono preamp and a better analog to digital converter than did the unit that is installed in the Debut Carbon Phono USB. I would recommend the Phono Box USB. It's the setup I currently have and I think it sounds great. To answer the other question, yes there is an RCA cable in the box but for the Phono Bix USB you will need two cables and so you will have to purchase another one to connect the box to your A5+ speakers.
tyler  Mar 27, 2015
A
Jeremy, the sound coming off the tone arm should be the same as both units ship with the OM10 cartridge. It's hard to find specs on the built in analog to digital converter (ADC) but the stand alone states use of a Burr Brown PCM2904 ADC. No matter how good your ADC, converting an analog signal to digital (hopefully lossless) and then converting that digital file back to analog for playback on a media player you will definitely lose the resolution and quality of a pure analog source which is the entire point of a vinyl versus digital but I digress... Pro-Ject turn tables all ship with RCA outputs.
anthony  Mar 27, 2015
A
I am no expert, this was a gift to my husband who said that he didn't want one with a USB bc it's quality is less. This was confirmed by an audiophile with many turntables that I met in a thrift shop. However, he said that only an audiophile would be able to tell the difference.
julianne  Mar 27, 2015
A
Not sure, I bought the non USB Pre Amp and upgraded the cables from the table to the pre amp with Audioquest a Green cables. Separated the ground wire from the cable that came with the Turntavle to ground. I love the sound. I wanted a vinyl experience and I am extremely happy with the result. Unless you want to transfer your vinal to digital you don't need the USB. If that is your objective the table with the built in pre amp should be fine.

Does this turntable come with phono cables? If so, what is the length of the cables?
chris  Nov 06, 2014

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: It does not include cables. We offer a large variety of RCA cables including varied lenghts you can find those here: http://www.crutchfield.com/g_20110/RCA-Audio-Patch-Cables.html?tp=1904 If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Is there a recommended speed box for this version? I read about improvements by adding a speed box with the earlier version, however do not find any details or a compatible speed box from project
presi  Aug 25, 2015

A
No there isn't. The performance benefits you are talking about are built in to the newer models, but they lack the convenience of push button rpm changes.
michael  Aug 25, 2015
A
The speed box isn't necessary for the model because is it already has a DC motor built in. The DC power function is what the speed box normally adds and that's why it doesn't add any uprgrade to this particular model.

This is a "fully-manual" turntable - does that mean it doesn't even have auto-return? What happens when the needle gets to the end of the album?
joe  Jun 19, 2015
13 answers
A
When the needle reaches the end of the album it just sits in the inner most groove and makes a scratching sound. I did get a little device that lifts the tone arm but the platter still spins.
steven  Jun 20, 2015
A
No auto-return. you gotta raise it up or it goes bump bump bump...
mark s  Jun 19, 2015
A
The stylus follows the groove to the end, where it just circles until you manually put the tone arm back in its cradle.
michael  Jun 19, 2015
A
The arm does not return automatically. When the music ends the arm stays at the end, but does not skate across the label, it just stays at the beginning of the label. There is no scratching noise etc... You will need to lift the arm up and move it back to the cradle. This is a great turntable! After some setup tweaking it has provided some great sound on my old LP's. If your AMP/Receiver does not have a Pre-Amp connection for the turntable, then you will need to purchase a Pre-Amp and connect it to the AMP/Receiver .. make sure to correctly ground the Pre-Amp if using one. Scott
scott  Jun 19, 2015
A
this turntable does not have auto-return. the needle remains on the record at the end of the album forever...until you lift it off!
karol  Jun 19, 2015
A
Simple just lift the stylus assembly off the record with the side lever and place it back in the holder.
stephen l  Jun 19, 2015
A
You have to Lift the tonearm with cueing lever and move it back to the arm rest.
richard  Jun 19, 2015
A
It does not have auto-return. When the stylus gets to the end of the album, it remains there until you pick it up. Sounds great, though.
ian  Jun 19, 2015
A
There is a counter weight that hangs from a short piece of basically fishing line, if you will that is designed to return the needle/arm back to the cradle. It honestly doesn't always work the best. Hope this helps.
jeremy  Jun 19, 2015
A
Nothing happens it just stays there , if i was doing it over again i would buy a auto or semi auto turntable You put a record on ,sit down and get comfortable and enjoy the record then in 17 minutes you have to get up and turn the table off or flip the record do, yourself a favor and invest the money in a top quality CD player
peter  Jun 19, 2015
A
Yes, that is correct - there is no auto-return. At the end of the album, you must manually pick up the arm and return it to it's cradle while you flip the record. Otherwise it will just continue to spin.
jonathan  Jun 19, 2015
A
No automatic return at all. At the end of the album, the record keeps turning and the arm stays hovered at the edge of the label, while the needle stays on the record. No warning beep sounds and no automatic time-out shutoff. If you walk away and forget, it could stay spinning for weeks...or for your entire vacation away from home. That's what happened to us. The problem is that no audio file turntables are anything but totally manual.
ritchie d  Jun 19, 2015
A
Infinite loop until you pick up the tonearm. That said, this turntable is fantastic.

Do I need a Phono amp with this turntable?
richard  Jan 31, 2015

A
I think you would unless your amp/receiver has a PHONO INPUT
mark s  Feb 02, 2015
A
If your receiver/amp does not have a phono-level input, then yes, you will need a phono pre-amp. If it does, you will not.
michael  Feb 01, 2015
A
Yes you do. There is another version that has one built in that is a little more expensive. If you have an old receiver with a phone input that works as well. It is a great table. I cannot recommend it enough.
james  Feb 01, 2015
A
If your reciver doesn't have a phono input you'll need to buy a phono preamp.
christopher  Feb 01, 2015
A
Hi Richard, If your receiver does not have a phono input yes you will need a phono preamp. They come in various versions and price points. I spent $99 on the one I bought but they can be purchased for much less. Some Pro Ject players come with the preamp that cost a little more. Best of luck. Jeremy
jeremy  Feb 01, 2015
A
Yes you do need a phono amp. You can plug it in to an audio receiver that has one. Alternatively you can buy a separate phono amp. There is another version of this turntable that comes with both a USB connection and a phono amp included.
anthony  Feb 01, 2015
A
Depends on your amp. If it has a phono imput on the back you shouldn't. If not you will need one.
richard  Jan 31, 2015
A
Yes
julianne  Jan 31, 2015
A
Yes you do. I am using a NAD PP2e. Crutchfield has the new PP4 which I would like to try for it has MM/MC and USB output.
ralph  Jan 31, 2015
A
Depends on whether or not your receiver has a phono input. If you are connecting via cd or tape or aux you will need a pre amp. Mine set me back about $100. FYI table sounds incredible!
robert c  Jan 31, 2015
A
There isn't an amp built into this turntable. Depending on your stereo amp, you may or may not need a phono preamp. Some stereo amps have a phono preamp built in, but most do not. You'll probably need to buy a preamp separately. NAD is a big manufacturer to look at.
adam  Jan 31, 2015
A
Hi Richard, You will need a phono pre amp if your receiver or amplifier doesn't have a designated phono input. Hope this helps.:)
wayne  Jan 31, 2015
A
Unless your amp or receiver has a phono input you will need one. I believe Pro-Ject sells them through Crutchfield or look on the. Web. It is a great turntable but there is no built in amp Thanks
stephen l  Jan 31, 2015
A
Depends on your source if you have phono in then a phono amp will NOT be necessary most modern sources WILL require a phono amp as it wont have a phono in My pioneer elite had a phono in so i didnt need a phono amp
robert  Jan 31, 2015
A
You do in fact need a phono preamp, unless of course your receiver or amplifier has a phono input.
katherine  Jan 31, 2015
A
If you have 'phono' inputs on the back of your receiver, no, you won't need to buy one-it's built into your receiver. If you don't have 'phono' inputs then yes, you will need a phono pre-amp.

Yes it does. Set-up was easy and it sounds great. Make sure you have a phono input on your receiver or a phono preamp.

pre-mounted Ortofon 2M Red moving magnet cartridge That is stated on the Crutchfield website, but I understand how it could be missed. When I got mine, I checked all of the cartridge adjustments. Everything had been done correctly at the factory.

Q
Pro-ject's website says the wow and flutter on the Debut Carbon (DC) is .6% yet your site says it is .1%. Which is it?

We have our own in-house Product Research team that determined that number. Because Wow and Flutter are two different things but often expressed as a combined spec they numbers don't always make sense. I am actually an owner of the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon and love it. I've had it for over 3 years and have found it natural, balanced, and reliable. If you have any additional questions before you place an order you can chat with or call one of our Product Advisors here: https://bit.ly/2QNxGQB --Cosmo
