Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Super easy to use, just connect your turntable to the box and the box to your computer, then download the free Audacity software and you are ready to go.

Pros: Easy to get setup and running.

Cons: Software is very complex and almost like a mini recording studio. It will take some time and practice to learn all the things you can do with it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with my purchase of my Pro- Ject Phone Box USB. It is a great way to interface any turntable to a receiver or powered monitors or a pro mixing console. The unit is small and heavy for its size. It is well made and has setting for Moving Magnet and Moving Coil Cartridges. The USB output is great for sending the audio from your Turntables to computer or other storage device. After recording some select albums to my computer and comparing them to their CD versions of the same titles, I notice there is a dramatic difference coming from the analog source compared to the CD, better stereo imaging and clarity of all instruments and voices. This unit is well made and has solid connections on the back as well as a place to ground your turntables. It uses a ac adapter for its power but has no power light or power button so its always on. Crutchfield is a great company and had this unit at my doorstep in 2 days.

Pros: Small, well made, good performance and price point. Easy to hook up.

Cons: None

Product Research

Phono (MM/MC) Preamp: The Pro-Ject Phono Box USB allows you to connect a turntable with either a MM (moving magnet) or MC (moving coil) cartridge to today's home receiver's and amplifier which do not offer a dedicated phono input. There is a button on the back of the unit which allows you to switch between MM or MC mode.

Metal Case: The Phono Box USB's metal case shields the electronics from vibration and electromagnetic interference.

Dual-Mono Circuitry: The Phono Box USB provides optimal channel separation through dual-mono circuitry and low-noise ICs.

RIAA Equalization: The Pro-Ject Phono Box USB provides amplification and RIAA equalization for both MM and MC cartridges.

RCA Connections: The Phono Box USB features gold-plated stereo RCA connections. A stereo RCA input connects your turntable, and a stereo RCA output connects your home receiver or amplifier. RCA cables sold separately.

Ground Terminal: The Phono Box USB also has a turntable ground, in case your turntable has a separate ground lead. This provides shielding to the tone-arm and the sensitive circuitry in the turntable.

A/D Converter with USB Output: The Phono Box USB features a built-in A/D converter (Burr Brown PCM2904 16-Bit Delta Sigma) with a mini-USB (type-B) output to record your vinyl music to a Windows PC or Mac computer (USB cable not included). The unit supports sampling frequencies of 32, 44.1, and 48kHz. Your computer must have a suitable recording program installed (the Phono Box USB does not provide built-in recording software).

Note: Runs on Windows (XP/Vista/7) and Mac OS (operating systems). Automatic recognition, without additional driver, by standard PC.

Outboard Power Supply: The Pro-Ject Phono Box USB operates off of standard household AC current, using the supplied AC power adapter. The external power adapter is separate from the phono preamp to further improve sound quality.

  • Input: 100-240V~50/60Hz, 0.6A
  • Output: 15V - 500mA (18V)

Customer Q&A

Why did you buy this?

I collect phono pre amps and needed this one for my collection. [ Michael  Dec 12, 2015 ]

As long as your favorite software (or app) you want to use runs on Windows 8, Pro-Ject will be be happy with your new laptop and W8. [ Marinos  Apr 19, 2015 ]
It is compatible with any computer. All you need to do is download a program like Audacity. [ Winston  Apr 14, 2015 ]
It depends on whose recording software you're using. I'm using VinylStudio (nice program) on Windows 7, though they claim compatibility also with Win 8. alpinesoft DOT co DOT uk [ Robert  Apr 14, 2015 ]
We use our unit with an Apple Laptop and it works just fine. Have not used it with Windows 8. Seems like a quality unit though. [ Thomas  Apr 14, 2015 ]
If I understand your question correctly, you want to connect the USB out on your PC and send the signal to an amplifier for driving speakers. No that won't work because the USB is a digital signal. Amplifiers and speakers require an analog signal. Also, the USB port on the Pro-Ject Phono box is an output. The PhonoBox takes the unamplified analog signal from the phonograph and digitizes it and sends it to the USB port as digital signal your PC can read. You can't do this process in reverse by sending a digitized signal to the PhonoBox through it's USB port. Hope that answers your question. [ Rob  Dec 15, 2014 ]
Not sure if i understand your question. Pro-Ject Phono Box USB is a pre-amp for connection between turntable and amplifier, or output to computer's USB port should you wish to digitize analog LPs (works very well with Vinyl Studio's software). Re: computer connection to stereo: I have a Pro-Ject Receiver Box S, and simply run a 3.5mm mini plug from computer's audio output into input 2 on back of receiver. An option is to get a 3.5mm Mini Plug to RCA cable, and run to the typical 2 RCA inputs on rear of receiver. [ Robert  Dec 14, 2014 ]
It seems your question is confusing and is not about this product and its intended use. Please resubmit your question in a clear and concise format and I will do my best to give you an honest response. [ Winston  Dec 14, 2014 ]
