About the Pro-Ject RM 1.3
Great looks and even better sound
Great looks and even better sound
The RM 1.3's striking appearance is just the beginning of this turntable's appeal. Pro-Ject follows through with a healthy dose of top-notch sound quality. When the Pro-Ject folks stopped by recently for a demonstration, we were truly impressed with just how solid this player is. It was a treat to hear the warm, detailed, and refreshingly natural sound that LPs can deliver when played back on a high-quality turntable. And it reconfirmed our belief that attention to materials and construction is essential for great vinyl sound.
Features that focus on performance
A look under the platter reveals the RM 1.3's unusual three-point MDF chassis. This triangular-shaped design helps resist vibrations that can smear sonic detail. The entire assembly rests on three nylon cone feet to further reduce noise. The RM 1.3's heavy MDF platter spins on a precision axle and bearing for excellent speed stability and smooth, silent rotation. The isolated motor assembly and belt drive system keep motor vibration away from the chassis, preventing noise from being transferred to the cartridge. An external AC power supply reduces the chance of hum, and can even be upgraded with Pro-Ject's Speed Box II for enhanced performance. And the table's S-shaped aluminum tonearm has an offset counterweight design that lowers its center of gravity to improve tracking — a big help with warped records.
Get the best sound, without the hassle
Pro-Ject knows that turntable setup can be a challenge for the novice. That's why the RM 1.3 comes out of the box virtually ready to play. Its pre-matched, factory-mounted tonearm and phono cartridge take the guesswork out of installation, so you can enjoy optimized sound quality with minimal effort. A few minutes to dial in key settings like tracking force, anti-skating, and platter speed are all that's needed to experience the superior performance that's waiting for you on your favorite records.

Features
Overview: The Pro-Ject RM-1.3 Genie is a manual belt-driven turntable with a fitted MM-cartridge (Sumiko Pearl). Its 12" resonance-optimized MDF platter rests upon a three-point MDF plinth with an isolated motor assembly optimized for low noise and speed stability. A single-piece fixed headshell & S-shaped tone-arm features hardened stainless steel bearings and a rigid aluminum tube to provide superb tracking. Three nylon cone feet further reduce noise and vibration.
Belt Driven: The Pro-Ject RM-1.3 Genie features a quiet running synchronous motor with a two-step pulley that drives the platter's outside edge via a silicone belt. The RM-1.3 Genie supports 33-1/3 and 45 rpm speeds.
Note: The optional Pro-Ject Speed Box II (252SBIIB, sold separately) can be connected to the turntable to change speeds electronically between 33-1/3 and 45 rpm.
Isolated Motor: The drive motor of the RM-1.3 Genie is isolated on its own platform and completely decoupled from the turntable's plinth to eliminate vibration transmission.
MDF Plinth: The Pro-Ject RM-13 features three-point MDF (medium density fiber) plinth for exceptional stability.
Optimized Platter: The 12" resonance-optimized platter is made of MDF (medium density fiber) to resist vibration. It comes with a felt mat.
Inverted Bearing Assembly: The RM-1.3 incorporates an inverted chrome plated stainless steel axle that rests on a polished steel bearing in a bronze housing for low wow-and-flutter and speed accuracy.
RCA Connection with Grounding Screw: Connection to the phono input of your amplifier can be made with connecting cables of your choice through the turntable's gold-plated stereo RCA phono jacks and grounding screw.
Note: The Pro-Ject turntable comes supplied with a 47" stereo RCA cable with ground wire.
External Power Supply: The RM-1.3 Genie utilizes an external power supply to avoid potential electro-mechanical interference.
S-Shaped Tone-arm: The RM-1.3 Genie features an 8.6" long S-shaped tone-arm. The headshell and arm-tube are fashioned from a single piece of aluminum for increased rigidity. The solid arm-base permits accurate height adjustment of arm-tube and VTA (vertical tracing angle). The tone-arm's horizontal bearings consist of two hardened stainless steel points for added stability. A single fixing screw allows arm-tube rotation for easy adjustment of needle azimuth despite a fixed headshell.
MM-Cartridge: The turntable is supplied with a Sumiko Pearl fitted MM-cartridge. This moving magnet phono cartridge features an alloy cantilever, bonded elliptical stylus, and 4.0mV output
Note: If your amplifier does not have a suitable Phono MM input, you will require a separate phono pre-amplifier (252PBIIB, sold separately) to connect the turntable to your amplifier.
Internal Wiring: The tone-arm's internal wiring consists of silver coated, high-purity copper for accurate analog signal transfer.
Eccentrically-Mounted Counterweight: The eccentrically mounted counterweight reduces cantilever forces and dynamic wow when playing warped records. The counterweight is suitable for cartridges weighing between 0.14-0.317 oz (4-9g).
Nylon Feet: Three nylon spiked feet provide additional stability to the turntable.
Note: The turntable should be positioned on a low-resonance surface such as wood or multiple layer ply-board to avoid structural vibrations disturbing replay.

This turntable just oozes cool. Unfortunately, I got the very last one that Crutchfield had in stock, and it was damaged. Had to return for the Carbon.
