Overview

Our take on the Pro-Ject Speed Box S

If you own a Pro-Ject turntable, this little box is a must-have. First, it lets you change speeds between 33-1/3 and 45 rpm with just the touch of a button — no need to manually move the belt. But what really impressed us is the way it stabilizes the record platter's rotation speed. Even slight speed fluctuations can detract from the magic of vinyl sound, but with the Speed Box S in place, your records will spin with greater speed accuracy and rock-steady consistency. When we plugged it in to one of our Pro-Ject RM 1.3 turntables, we immediately heard tighter, more defined bass. Vocals sounded fuller, with added "body" and presence, lending a greater sense of sonic realism. Pitch accuracy for instruments with long decay times, such as piano, was spot on. Overall, the music seemed to flow just a little easier from a quieter background.

A simple "no install" installation

The Speed Box S makes an easy and cost-effective upgrade. Simply plug it into your turntable's AC jack, then connect it to power with the supplied transformer. That's all it takes to enjoy enhanced performance and convenience.

Noticeable improvement in sound on an MMF 2.2. Less motor noise, more torque on the platter, clearer on the low end.

Pro-Ject Speed Box S

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Noticeable improvement in sound on an MMF 2.2. Less motor noise, more torque on the platter, clearer on the low end.

Pros: Improved sound Easy to use/install

Cons: The cord is too short

Excellent addition

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Pro-Ject turntable had an audible low frequency hum from the motor that got transferred through the cartridge to my amp. It was very noticeable during soft passages. I went online and found that this was a common problem with Pro-Ject tables. I tried various adjustments of the motor mount screws, rubber washers to isolate the motor, etc. None of those things made a difference. I finally decided to buy the Pro-Ject speed box, an accessory that allows you to change speeds without removing the platter to move the belt. I have very few 45's and I have no problem changing the belt on occasion but I read that the speed box might eliminate the hum. It did! My table is extremely quiet now. If you get a Pro-Ject table and have an audible hum, get the speed box. I almost returned the table because I was annoyed at throwing more money at something I just bought but now I'm very happy with it. As always, the Crutchfield experience was outstanding in every way

Pros: Completely eliminated the only problem with my turntable, high build quality, looks cool.

Cons: The cable between the box and the turntable is very short, limiting placement options.

I WAS Skeptical

Lymbo90 from Asheville, NC on 6/13/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own Pro-Ject RM 5.1 SE turntable and didn't purchase the Speedbox with it. Frankly, I considered it a gimmick and never thought I'd buy one. Then I started reading a multitude of positive reviews from consumers and media alike. So, I bit the bullet and ordered from the fine folks at Crutchfield and after connecting it and putting the cart down on the vinyl, I was immediately rewarded. I now wish I wouldn't have waited this long to buy one. Sure, the switching from 33 to 45 without removing the platter and adjusting the belt is very convenient, but the kicker is the improved sound. It's not just a slight difference either. It's a "holy crap" experience that has left a big grin on my face!

Pros: Convenient of switching speeds. Opens up and very noticeably improves the sound of my turntable. Easy setup.

Cons: None so far.

Speed Box Helps

The Project Speed box not only lets the audiophile change speeds automatically, but also it reduces motor noise of the turntable. There is virtually no noise.

Pros: Great price.

Cons: None that I can see.

Pro Ject speed box

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speed box allows speed changes without changing pulley positions on belt drive. Small, well constructed, with nice non-slip feet and easy on the eyes blue indicator lights- unit does what it is designed to do-without excess-very Pro Ject.

Pros: Solid, minimalist design

Cons: Leads too short, minimal info literature included

Noticeable improvement.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received a Debut Carbon and Speed Box at the same time but, tried the Carbon without the Speed Box initially. There was a VERY noticeable reduction in noise after adding this box and records that sounded good, got even better.

Pros: Noise reduction, convenience, stability

Cons: Short cable from box to turntable.

Nice add-on

Darryl from Wichita on 10/29/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Perfect add-on to the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, No more taking off the platter to change the speed from 33 to 45 and it seems its more stable. The instructions were sort of lame and a little confusing. but all you need to know is to always start it at 33, then turn it up to 45 when it is at full speed. So just return to to 33 before shutting it down(and you will start at 33 again).

Cons:

Great upgrade

vicolindo from Raleigh, NC on 7/22/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This speed box was a definite upgrade for my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon turntable. Instead of relying on the built in DC motor, this speed box electronically stabilizes the platter speed to 33 1/3 or 45 rpm and you don't have to lift platter off and manually change speeds by moving belt on pulley. There's a definite upgrade to the sound with a more focused stereo image, tighter bass and greater detail than before. Buy this before you invest in anything else.

Pros: Better sound from your turntable and more convenient speed changes.

Cons: Power cable from Speed Box to turntable is not very long thus restricting placement options. I had to go to another retailer and buy a longer aftermarket DC power cable and 2.1 mm adapters for both ends.

Pro-Ject Speedbox S

Brian from Chicago, IL on 4/2/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ease and convenience of being able to switch between 33 and 45 rpm by the touch of a button, is worth the price alone. On top of that, I have noticed a slight sound upgrade from my turntable since installing the speedbox S. I also own the Pro-ject Acryl-it platter and in my opinion the speedbox s increased the sound quality more than the platter. So if you're looking to buy either item and looking for the best bang for your buck, I'd say the speedbox s is the better upgrade between the 2.

Pros: Black, fits the general color theme of my overall system. Small, easy to position on a table filled with other equipment

Cons: None, does everything it's described to do very well.

The Speed Box is not compatible with and not needed for the Debut Carbon DC. Essentially, a frequency generator similar to the circuitry of the Speed Box has been built into the turntable. Check the Pro-Ject website for more information. Older US versions of the Debut Carbon could benefit from the Speed Box. [ GREGORY  Jan 01, 2016 ]
