Total control

The camera's primary functions are controlled by buttons and switches located within easy reach on the camera's body. Manual control of white balance, gain, shutter speed, neutral density filter settings and more are at your fingertips. When the action is happening quickly, the camera's focus assist function can be turned on, so you can shoot fast and in focus.

Professional connections

There's little point shooting live, on the scene if you can't get the footage out quickly. The GY-HM600U offers an array of broadcast-quality connection points, including a locking HD/SD SDI connector that can pass an uncompressed 4:2:2 HD signal or downconverted SD signal. The camera's HDMI connector outputs the same signal as the HD-SDI feed, which is especially useful for monitoring while shooting a live event. Two heavy-duty XLR connectors with Mic/Line capability ensure that you're able to capture premium sound to go with your top-notch video. Connections for audio monitoring, remote control, time sync and USB devices offer even more flexibility.

General Features

JVC ProHD Video: The JVC GY-HM600 compact ProHD handheld camcorder can record Full HD video. It has a high-quality Fujinon lens with 23x optical zoom for excellent video quality. The GY-HM600 has three 1/3" 12-bit CMOS image sensors, each capable of capturing Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution images. The camcorder comes with an attachable handle unit with additional recording and playback controls and two XLR audio inputs. Two SDHC/SDXC memory card slots for relay or simultaneous recording.

Imaging Device: The GY-HM600 is equipped with three 1/3" 12-bit Full HD CMOS image sensors, each with 2.07M pixels. The three image sensors individually process the R, G, and B color signals, achieving high color and image resolution, and achieving a high F11 sensitivity. Coupled with the image sensors is JVC's new-generation "Falconbrid" image processor which compresses and processes the images without loss for the highest image quality.

Recording Formats: The camcorder can record in QuickTime (MPEG-2 HD/H.264), MP4 (MPEG-2 HD), and AVCHD file formats. Files can be directly edited on Apple Final Cut Pro software or XDCAM EX Non-linear Editing Workflow.

Dual Card Slots: The GY-HM600 has two slots for SDHC/SDXC memory cards. The unit is compatible with SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC cards up to 128 GB. When both card slots are loaded, you can record simultaneously to both cards (Dual Rec mode), creating an immediate backup. You can also perform Relay Recording, which lets you shoot continuously and seamlessly over multiple cards. When one card becomes full the camcorder automatically switches to the other card. SD cards with Speed Class 6 or higher performance are recommended.

3.5" LCD Monitor: The GY-HM600 is equipped with a 3.5" LCD monitor. The LCD has 920,000 pixels, and can be tilted downward 90° for overhead shots, and upward approximately 180° for low angle or self recording.

Lens: The camcorder is equipped with a Fujinon wide angle lens with 23x optical zoom and a focal length of 4.1mm-94.3mm. The 35mm equivalent is 29mm-667mm. Its maximum aperture is F1.6 at wide angle and F3.0 at telephoto. The bright lens allows you to capture details clearly, even in a dimly-lit room. The lens has a 72mm filter thread to accommodate screw-on filters.

ND Filter: The GY-HM600 has a 4-position ND Filter that adjusts the amount of light according to the brightness during shooting. You can set the ND Filter to 1/4, 1/16, 1/64, or off.

Optical Image Stabilization: The Optical Image Stabilizer reduces camera shake during video recording. You can turn the OIS on or off as needed.

Recording Features

Video Recording Quality: The GY-HM600 can record in HD and SD in multiple formats, including MPEG-2 Long GOP, which is widely used by TV broadcasters, and AVHCD, which is compatible with numerous editing systems. This gives you a wide variety of formats and recording modes to choose from:

Power Requirements

Battery: The GY-HM600 is powered by the SSL-JVC50 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (7.4V / 4900mAh / 37Wh). The battery charges in approximately 4 hours while attached to the camcorder, using the supplied AC adapter. A fully-charged battery will provide approximately 2 hours 45 minutes of continuous recording time.

Inputs and Outputs

HDMI: The camcorder has a Type A HDMI (full size) output for connecting an external monitor. You can output live video images and audio through the HDMI, or playback recorded material. No HDMI cable is included.

HD-SDI: In addition to the HDMI terminal, the camcorder has a BNC connector for outputting 3G-compatible SDI signals to a compatible monitor. You can simultaneously output uncompressed Full HD signals and audio signals from the SDI Out and HDMI terminals.

USB: The Mini-B Version 2.0 connector allows you to connect the camcorder to your computer for downloading your videos to a PC.

AV: The 3.5mm minijack AV output lets you connect the camcorder to a TV for outputting composite video and audio signals to a TV, DVD recorder, or VCR. No AV cable is included.

Note: Not all 4-pole mini-plugs have the same wiring configuration. For proper playback, any AV plug used with this camcorder must have this configuration:
  • Tip: Audio Left channel (white)
  • Ring 1 (next to tip): Video (yellow)
  • Ring 2 (next to collar): Ground
  • Collar: Audio Right channel (red)

Headphone Output: A 3.5mm headphone output is provided to allow you to monitor the audio with headphones while recording or playing back videos. You can adjust the audio output level using the Up/Down volume buttons on the side of the camcorder. The camcorder's built-in speaker is muted when headphones are connected.

Microphone Inputs: Two XLR inputs on the handle provide a 2-channel balanced input for connecting an audio device or a microphone. Each of the inputs has a separate rotary level control. A 3-way switch lets you set the input as follows:

  • Line: When connecting an audio device or mixer, set the input to "Line." The reference input level is +4 dBu.
  • Mic: When connecting a dynamic microphone, set the input to "Mic."
  • Mic + 48V: If using a condenser microphone that requires phantom power, set the input to Mic+48V. The connectors provides +48V of phantom power.

Aux Input: The GY-HM600 has a 3.5mm input for connecting the receiver of a wireless microphone system.

Remote: A 2.5mm sub-minijack is provided for connecting an optional wired remote control. You can operate the camcorder using either the on-board controls or the controls on the remote, with the remote controls taking priority.

DC Power: The camcorder has an AC adapter for connecting the camcorder to standard household electrical power. The AC adapter is used to charge the battery in the camera, or to power the camcorder during long recording sessions, playback to a TV, or downloading videos to external recording devices.
