It records in both high-quality AVCHD and standard-definition formats, and gets outstanding results even in low light because of its bright, wide f/1.8 maximum aperture. And JVC's advanced image stabilization, in concert with the stability-enhancing form factor of a traditional camcorder, will make the video you bring home easy to watch, as it will be free of the shakes and shimmies you might gather with a smartphone. Plus, you'll enjoy interesting creative options like time-lapse video, a dramatic technique for setting the scene of the events you document.

    General Features

HD Video Recording: The JVC GZ-HM45 HD digital camcorder is capable of recording Full HD 1920 x 1080/60p video onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. In addition, the unit has a 2.7" LCD monitor, and an F1.8-6.3 lens with a 40x optical zoom and Digital Image Stabilization.

SD Card Slot: The GZ-HM45 has a slot for SD memory cards. The unit is compatible with SD cards up to 2 GB, SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC cards up to 128 GB. A 128 GB SDXC card can hold over 10 hours of Full HD video (AVCHD) at the highest recording quality. Class 4 or higher SD cards are recommended for video recording. No SD cards are included with the camcorder.

2.7" LCD Touch Screen Monitor: The GZ-HM45 is equipped with a flip-out 2.7" Touch Panel LCD monitor. The LCD has 230,000 pixels, and can be rotated forward 180° for low shots and self-portraits, and backward 90° for overhead recording.

Imaging Device: The camcorder has a 1/5.8" back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with 2,510,000 total pixels. It has a recording area of 1,280,000 to 2,290,000 effective pixels for recording video.

Lens: The GZ-HM45 has a F1.8-6.3 lens with a 40x optical zoom, and a focal length of 2.9mm to 116mm. The 35mm equivalent focal length is 40.5mm-1620mm.

Zoom: The camcorder offers three options for zooming. In addition to the 40x optical zoom, you can select dynamic zoom of up to 70x (zoom ratio varies according to the image stabilizer setting), or digital zoom of up to 999x. When the digital zoom is used, the image can become grainy as the subject is enlarged digitally.

Digital Image Stabilization: You can choose from two levels of image stabilization. The Digital Image Stabilizer reduces camera shake during video recording. The Advanced Image Stabilizer can deliver more effective camera shake reduction when shooting bright scenes on the wide angle end (approximately 5x).

    Recording Features

Video Recording Quality: The GZ-HM45 records video in the AVCHD mode, the video format is MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 with 2-channel Dolby Digital audio. The available image quality settings include:

Image Quality Resolution Average Bit Rate
    UXP 1920 x 1080 24 Mbps
    XP 1920 x 1080 17 Mbps
    SP 1920 x 1080 12 Mbps
    EP 1920 x 1080 4.8 Mbps
    SSW 720 x 480 6.2 Mbps
    SEW 720 x 480 3 Mbps

Time-Lapse Photography: The GZ-HM45 can take a series of frames at a set interval to illustrate within a short time changes to a scene that occur slowly over a long period of time. This feature can be used to photograph the opening of a flower bud, or the passing of clouds over several hours. You can set the interval at 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 40, or 80 seconds. The longer the interval, the faster the video will be when played back at normal speed (30 fps). (Example: recordings taken at 2 second intervals will be played back at 60 times speed.)

Auto Recording: The Auto Record setting allows the unit to record automatically by sensing the changes in subject's movement within a red frame displayed on the monitor. Recording continues as long as there is movement within the red frame, but will stop when there is no more movement for five seconds.

Shooting Modes: The GZ-HM45 lets you select the following shooting modes:

    • i.Auto (Intelligent Auto): Lets you record without worrying about the setting details. The camcorder recognizes specific shooting scenes and changes the settings accordingly.
    • Manual: You can adjust settings, such as brightness, by using the manual mode. The manual recording menu includes:
      • Scene Select: You can make recordings that suit the shooting conditions.
      • Focus: Focus manually when auto focus cannot be achieved.
      • Brightness Adjust: Use when recording in dark or bright locations, and adjust the overall brightness.
      • White Balance: Adjust the overall color of the scene according to the lighting source.
      • Backlight Compensation: Correct the image when the subject appears dark because of backlighting.
      • Tele Macro: Take close-up (macro) shots of the subject.

Can this camera record a one hour program, like a church service or childrens' concert?

It can record a one hour program as far as memory goes. You might run out of battery toward the end. If you can keep it plugged in that would solve that problem.

Well so far the longest thing I've recorded with it was about 30-40 minutes. So i would assume so, just give it try. When I did it the camera wasn't even hot, so it should be good.
    wister  Feb 04, 2014

yes it can- make sure you use a tripod so the picture is steady.
    amy  Feb 04, 2014

The device does not have any internal memory (hard drive). You will need to buy a separate memory card. The size of the card will determine how long you are able to record.

    mark a  Feb 04, 2014

Yes,it has to do with the amount of your card.HD shooting gives the best picture, however lasts for nearly an hour.If you want the most time then don't shoot HD mode.
    mark a  Feb 04, 2014
    A
Not with the original battery. You have to purchase a longer battery -life. I bought this additional battery for about $30.
    jesse l  Feb 04, 2014

I think it has to do with the amount of memory card.
    mark a  Feb 04, 2014

This unit uses an so card so recording time depends on size of so card. No problem for 1 hour service. Time remaining counts down.
    gwen  Feb 04, 2014

The stats in the book will tell you what recording quality you choose with what quantity of GB card you have installed in the camera. Also, you might want a bigger battery. But from what I've seen so far with my camera, on the next to the highest recording quality setting and at least a 16 GB card and the battery that comes with it fully charged you should have no problem recording an hour if not more. You have lots of options.

The battery must be charged while in the camera. I understand there is an adapter available, but it comes at an additional cost. It was cheaper to buy an additional battery than to purchase the adapter. I will probably get the adapter at a later date.
