All-weather workhorse

As they say in baseball: "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Be prepared for any eventuality with JVC's GZ-R10 all-weather camcorder. The R10 incorporates rugged Quad-Proof techonology initially developed for JVC's line of sports action cameras; it's waterproof down to 16 feet, resistant to everyday bumps and drops, and capable of resisting dust and freezing temperatures as well. It's ready for whatever your day might bring.

Zoom In

The 40x optical zoom on the R10 gets your camera's "eye" closer to the action, and JVC built in an efficient microphone that zooms when your lens does, so you can hear what's going on as well. An internal algorithm attenuates wind noise, in keeping with the R10's all-weather design. JVC also added K2 sound technology to make sure the soundtrack to your adventures sounds as good as your video looks.

Edit and Share

The GZ-R10 comes with Everio MediaBrowser™ software that allows you to import your movies to your computer, where you can store, edit, and share them on social media. The camera is also directly compatible with optional editing software like iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

General Features

Quad-Proof: The Everio GZ-R10 features JVC's Quad-Proof construction, offering protection from extreme elements:

  • Waterproof: The camcorder has waterproof seals around the terminal cover and other areas to protect the unit to a depth of 5 meters (16.4 feet) for up to 30 minutes. (IEC Standard publication 529 IPX8)
  • Shockproof: The unit can withstand a drop of 1.5 meters (4.9 feet). (MIL-STD810F Method 516.5-Shock)
  • Freezeproof: The camcorder will continue to operate in sub-freezing temperatures, down to 14°F (-10°C).
  • Dustproof: The camcorder is sealed to keep out dust (IEC Standard publication 529 IP5X).

AVCHD Full HD Recording: The GZ-R10 is capable of recording AVCHD Full HD 1920 x 1080 video, or up to 10 MP still photos onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards.

SD Card Slot: The GZ-R10 has a slot for SD memory cards. The unit is compatible with SD cards up to 2 GB, SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC cards up to 128 GB. A 128 GB SDXC card can hold 11.5 hours of Full HD video (AVCHD) at the highest recording quality. Class 4 or higher SD cards are recommended for video recording. No SD cards are included with the camcorder.

3.0" LCD Touch Screen Monitor: The GZ-R10 is equipped with a tiltable, 3.0" Touch Panel LCD monitor. The LCD has 230,000 dots, and can be rotated forward 180° for low angle or self recording, and backward 90° for high angle recording.

Imaging Device: The camcorder has a 1/5.8" back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with 2,510,000 total pixels. It has a recording area of 1,280,000 to 2,290,000 effective pixels for recording AVCHD video. For recording still images, there are 2,290,000 pixels for 16:9 images and 1,710,000 for 4:3 still images.

Lens: The GZ-R10 has a bright F1.8-F6.3 Konica Minolta HD lens with a 40x optical zoom, and a focal length of 2.9mm to 116mm. The 35mm equivalent focal length for video is 40.5mm-1620mm (image stabilizer: off). For still images, the equivalent focal length is 40.5mm-1620mm in 16:9 and 49.5mm-1980mm in 4:3.

Zoom: The camcorder offers three options for zooming. In addition to the 40x optical zoom, you can select dynamic zoom of 41-60x, or digital zoom of 41 to 200x. When the digital zoom is used, the image can become grainy as the subject is enlarged digitally.

Image Stabilization: You can choose from two levels of image stabilization. The Digital Image Stabilizer (DIS) reduces camera shake during video recording. The Advanced Image Stabilizer (AIS) can reduce camera shake more effectively when shooting bright scenes on the wide angle end (up to approximately 5x zooming).

Recording Features

Video Recording Quality: When recording in the AVCHD mode, the video format is MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 with 2-channel Dolby Digital (48kHz, 256 kbps). The available image quality settings include:

Video Quality Resolution Average Bit Rate
UXP 1920 x 1080 24 Mbps
XP 1920 x 1080 17 Mbps
EP 1920 x 1080 4.8 Mbps

Still Image Sizes: In addition to recording video, the GZ-R10 can record JPEG still images in 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios. Images sizes include 1920 x 1080 (2M), 1440 x 1080 (1.5M), and 640 x 480 (0.3M). Still images can also be taken during video recording or video playback at 1920 x 1080.

Time-Lapse Photography: The GZ-R10 can take a series of frames at a set interval to illustrate within a short time changes to a scene that occur slowly over a long period of time. This feature can be used to photograph the opening of a flower bud, or the passing of clouds over several hours. You can set the interval as follows:

Interval Details
1 second Takes frames at 1-second intervals.
Playback will be at 30x normal speed.
5 seconds Takes frames at 5-second intervals.
Playback will be at 150x normal speed.
20 seconds Takes frames at 20-second intervals.
Playback will be at 600x normal speed.
80 seconds Takes frames at 80-second intervals.
Playback will be at 2400x normal speed.

Self-Timer: There are three Self-Timer functions in still image mode. The 10-second self timer is convenient for taking group photos, allowing the photographer to get into the frame after the shutter release is pressed. The 2-second self timer helps to prevent camera shake by taking the picture 2 seconds after the shutter release is pressed.

Special Recording Modes: You can add the following special effects to the still images that you record:

  • Grainy Monochrome: Images resemble old, grainy black & white photographs.
  • Food: Use this mode to capture images of food to make it look appetizing and more appealing.
  • Baby: This effect is suitable for capturing images of a baby. The effect softens the image, and enhances the clarity and brightness of skin color.
Power Requirements

Battery: The GZ-R10 is powered by a built-in high performance battery. Using the supplied AC-V11U AC adapter, the battery can be fully charged in approximately 4 hours and 40 minutes. You can record or playback videos during charging, however, the charging time will be longer. With a fully charged battery, the typical recording time (with starting and stopping recording and zooming takes place) is about 2.5 hours. Maximum recording time (continuous) is 4 hours 30 minutes.

Inputs and Outputs

HDMI: The camcorder has a Mini HDMI (Type C) output for connecting to an HDTV. If the connected TV is compatible with HDMI-CEC (consumer electronics control), you can operate the camcorder using the remote from the TV. No HDMI cable is included.

Micro USB: The Micro USB connector allows you to connect the camcorder to your computer for downloading your videos and photos. It can also be used for connecting to a DVD Writer, BD Writer (External Blu-ray Drive), or USB External Hard Disk Drive. A 39" USB cable is included. With the included 5" adapter, you can connect the camcorder to the supplied AC adapter for charging the camcorder through the Micro USB port.

Q
Can the time and date stamp be embedded in the video? So, when it is downloaded to a pc or burned to a dvd, will the time and date stamp show?

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yes, the date and time can be recorded and displayed on a video when recording. With the setting turned on, it will display on the video on a computer or other monitor device that is connected. This information is found on page 41 of the owner's manual. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
