JVC Mobile

Our take on the JVC KD-DV5100

Building a mobile video system from the ground up? JVC's KD-DV5100 DVD receiver makes a great foundation, whatever you're planning!

Like most new receivers, this sleek number plays a wide variety of formats, including standard and recordable DVDs and CDs, plus CD-Rs or CD-RWs. But JVC adds a feature that'll blow your mind: Giga MP3. Using your computer and appropriate software, you can burn up to 100 hours of MP3s or WMAs on a single recordable DVD, and the KD-DV5100 will play them. All of them. That's an unprecendented amount of music, all on a single disc, right at your fingertips!

The combination of plenty of MOSFET power (20 watts x 4 channels RMS), excellent sound controls (the adjustable six curves of Custom EQ), and 24-bit digital-to-analog resolution makes your music and movie soundtracks sound forceful, vibrant, and lifelike. To enjoy DVD video, you'll need to connect an external monitor to the video output.

And if system expansion's part of your plans, the KD-DV5100 is ready to accommodate. It features a front-panel auxiliary input, so you can add a portable player, such as an iPod™. Built-in controls let you connect a SIRIUS Satellite Radio tuner (subscription and antenna also required) to enjoy over 120 channels of music, sports, news, talk, entertainment, and much, much more. And a set of preamp outputs lets you connect an external amplifier to drive your system with more power.

To make using the system easy, for you or your passengers, the KD-DV5100 also comes with a full-function, comprehensive wireless remote control.

General Features

cEQ (7-Band EQ): This model has Rock, Jazz, Classic, Hip Hop, Pops, and User preset EQ curves. For the User preset, you can independently adjust the following frequencies: 60 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.4 kHz, 6 kHz, and 15 kHz. The level of each frequency can be adjusted from -5dB to +5 dB in 1 dB increments.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-DV5100 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. MP3 files with a bit rate from 32-320 kbps and WMA files with a bit rate from 32-192 kbps are supported. Each disc can have a maximum of 1100 files and 250 folders, with a maximum of 999 files per folder.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio Controls: This unit can control an optional SIRIUS Satellite tuner (item #607SIRJVC1). In addition to the SIRIUS tuner, you will need an antenna and subscription in order to receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio programming.

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-DV5100 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low", the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high", and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Source Naming: The KD-DV5100 allows you to assign names of up to 8 characters for AM and FM stations (30 station maximum), and a name up to 32 characters for CDs (including a connected CD changer, but not MP3/WMA or CD Text discs--30 disc maximum).

Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).

+10/-10 and +100/-100 Buttons: When selecting CD tracks or an MP3 file within a folder, you can jump ahead or jump back to the nearest track/file number that is a multiple of 10 by using the "+10" or "-10" buttons on the remote. For example, when selecting track/file 32 from track/file 6, you can press the "+10" button three times (>10, >20, >30) to get to 30, then the "track up" button twice (>31, >32) to get to track/file 32. For MP3/WMA tracks with a number greater than 99, use the +100/-100 buttons.

Front Panel Auxiliary Input: A front panel stereo minijack is provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system.

Rear Panel Auxiliary Input: A rear panel auxiliary input (left and right RCA audio jacks) is provided to allow the connection of another portable audio source.

Compatibility with Optional AUX Input Adapter: The optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. Item 105KSU57 connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the aux input adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

Clock Display: When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a wire that JVC calls an illumination lead, however, it acts as a dimmer lead. The dimmer can be set to Off (normal brightness at all times), Auto (display window automatically dims when your car head lights are turned on), or On (display is always dimmed). Note that the amount of dimming is fixed, it cannot be adjusted, and the illumination wire must be connected for Auto operation.

DVD/Video CD Features

MP3/WMA Playback: The KD-DV5100 can play MP3/WMA files that have been recorded on DVD-ROM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW discs. The disc must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format. Discs must be created on a computer with a DVD burner. The DVD burner software application must be compliant with UDF-Bridge format.

Note: DVDs recorded on stand alone consumer DVD burners are not compatible with this unit.

Direct Access: Using the supplied remote, you can directly access any title or chapter on a DVD, and any track on a Video CD.

Multi-Angle Display: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles.

Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Monitor Type: You can choose one of the following monitor types:

  • 16:9 (Multi): select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 16:9
  • 4:3 (Multi) Letter Box: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3. While viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars appear on the top and bottom of the screen.
  • 4:3 (Multi) Pan Scan: select this when the aspect ratio of your monitor is 4:3. While viewing a widescreen picture, the black bars do not appear; however, the left and right edges of the picture will not be shown on the screen.

Scan Search: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are five fast-play speeds in both directions (2x, 5x, 10x, 20x, and 60x).

Slow Motion: When playing a DVD or Video CD, there are five slow motion speeds in both directions (1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2).

Repeat Play: When playing a DVD, you can repeat the current chapter. When playing a Video CD, you can repeat the current track.

Random Play: When playing a Video CD, you can play the tracks in random order.

Intro Play: In this mode, you can play the first 10 seconds of each track on a Video CD.

Zoom: When playing DVDs or Video CDs, you can enlarge the picture using the zoom feature. You can choose one of five zoom settings. Once the image is enlarged, you can move the image around on the screen.

Dynamic Range Compression: This function reduces a Dolby Digital soundtrack's dynamic range so you can hear quieter dialog without being overwhelmed by loud sections. You can choose a setting of Auto or On.

Digital Audio Output: You can choose the type of signal that passes through the optical digital output:

  • PCM Only: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is incompatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio
  • Dolby Digital/PCM: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder incompatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio
  • Stream/PCM: choose when connected to an amplifier or decoder that is compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Optical Digital Output: The optical digital output on the rear of the unit allows you to connect an optional digital audio processor.

Video Output: The RCA composite video jack allows you to connect an optional monitor.

JVC KD-DV5100

Written By Erik, PA on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

I don't have anything good to say about this unit aside from how it looks on paper.

With a few months of use, the CD/DVD player stopped reading discs. I tried to get assistance from JVC, but they told me that this was normal when using DVD-R. They paid no attention to the fact that it worked fine for a numbe rof months. After a few more months, the CD/DVD player stopped reading any discs at all. Another JVC car stereo I own also has a faulty and now dead CD/DVD player.

After 6 total months of usage, the car this was installed in gave up the ghost (nearly 300K miles, may she RIP). I pulled the unit, carefully packed it in a box, sealed it and stored it on the top shelf of my closet. After it sat for about 1.5 years, I attempted to install it today. It's dead. It displays the time for about 2 seconds but it will do nothing else. It has a short and is completely unusable.

I got about 6 months out of this so the bargain I thought I was getting for the slew of features turned out to be quite the opposite. My other JVC also has lost it's CD/DVD and I figure it won't be long before that one totally buys the farm also.

Great mp3/video player

Written By Chris, South Bend, IN on Tuesday, November 29, 2005

I installed this player in my '02 Town and Country van to act as the hub for playing videos on trips and listening to my mp3 collection.

Pluses: Sounds excellent, Two audio inputs (one front, one rear), easy install, mp3 capabilities on DVD plus folder navigation, equalizer is user configurable, toslink optical out for digital sound.

Minuses: Small buttons for switching radio stations, etc. (if you're not using the remote), one audio output for amps (must adjust everything at amp instead of head unit).

Overall: I give it 5 stars even though it would be a little work to install a mulit-amp hookup. If you only want a sub, an amp with crossover will do the trick (which is what I will do). For it's purpose, the JVC is right on with it's price and features. If you want to install a full 5.1 system or multi-amp setup, I would suggest a different unit due to lack of outputs and level controls (though the digital output can help rectify that a bit). For my requirements, the JVC fit the bill and was definitely the best dollar value.

Good replacement for MACH 460

Written By Andrew, Atlanta, GA on Monday, November 14, 2005

My Saleen Mustang came with the Ford MACH 460 sound system. It's been a great system, up until the separate in dash CD unit refused to eject my Nirvana CD. So, if I'm going to upgrade the system, I figured I might as well really upgade it.
With the Crutchfield supplied harness and a Sirius adapter, it all worked, first try! It integrates with the MACH 460 amps and 6 speakers well.

Best thing for little money

Written By thomas, Asheville, NC on Thursday, October 20, 2005

Yes, finally, 1100 songs on one disc. Yes, it is still only 1100 songs, but a huge step up from 150 on a cd. I dont have a video screen yet, planning on 4 screens in my Mitsubishi Montero, with one more in the back for Xbox, or satellite, or whatever.

Things I like about this unit include, first and foremost, mega MP3. 1100 songs. Throw-away cost of 25 cents a disk. A must to use DVD-R or DVD-RW, I tried the +s, and they didnt work, or worked poorly, with 20 second pauses in between songs(not supported, per manual). Folder seperation makes it easy to find whole albums or songs, but organization is the key. Display is easy to read, with no sun fade at all. A seven channel equalizer, not just high, middle and low. It has a preamp output, optical digital output, rear and front auxiliary input, sirius radio ready, and, of course, a dvd player. Thats a whole lot for the money.

Things I dont like include the preamp not supporting subs(needing a sub switch on the amp, no problem, got that), having to reset the random disc setting every time, or getting the same songs on random everytime, needing to buy a seperate unit for sirius to work, and too many buttons on remote to use it while driving, other than memorizing necessary 3-4 buttons.

To get the demo display gone, hold the s button for seven seconds, when it says "demo" turn volume knob until it says off. Manual is long, but well worth the read.

I would give this thing five stars, but its kinda annoying having to hit random play every time I start the car. And the subwoofer choice on the preamp output. Other than that this stereo is my best ever!

WOW!

Written By Scott, Tucson, Arizona on Thursday, July 28, 2005

This radio is everything and more than I expected. It will work fine without a monitor but without one you are missing out on the flexability and usability of the unit that would otherwise blow your mind.

Great sound and well worth the price!

I am still looking for an affordable TOSLINK connector based amplifier to get access to the DTS capabilities of the unit.

With the JVC KS-U57 it has 3 different inputs that you can use for all kinds of things you may hook up to it like IPODs, TV Tuners, In car PCs, Portable Nav units and so on. I use one of mine for a Radio Scanner to catch up on current traffic problems.

It has a well written manual that at this time only has one addendum.

My favorite unexpected feature is the on-radio display is NEVER washed out by any kind of sunlight.

My least liked unexpected feature is the constant advertisement when all I want is time to show up, JVC shows up like a marquee and then eventually the time is shown but all I have to do is wait a little while and it the time shows up again on the next JVC pass.

You will not be disappointed!

Love this deck !!!

Written By John, Tampa, FL on Saturday, July 09, 2005

I love this Deck !!! I couldn't believe how easy the install was. Took about 40 mins in my 2005 Toyota Tundra. The install instructions and documentation from Crutchfield is Great. Being able to compile your MP3 collection onto a DVD-R is so cool. Navigating the folders is not to bad, but if you opt for a display monitor, thats when this deck really shines. You can browse your folders and sub-folders for song selection. Its so cool.

I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I would highly recomend this deck. Great buy.

JVC KD-DV5100

Written By Michael, Eureka (ST. Louis) , MO on Thursday, June 30, 2005

Easy to install (30 minutes)in my '04 Town Car thanks to help from Tech Services as I had not done this previously and I was a bit confused from manufacturer instructions.

Great sound! My important features were ability to random play Audio DVD's (1,000 songs per DVD) and have direct plug into face plate for my RIO and IPod MP3 Players. Everything works great!

Audio DVD's and MP3 players make the time go by when on the road.

Wow, I just installed this player and I must say I am impressed!

Written By Bart, Chicago on Tuesday, June 14, 2005

I have been waiting for a head unit that can read MP3s off DVD+r for a while now, and finally JVC has done it. I installed this unit last night. It took me about 1.5 hours with Crutchfields nice install kit for my Nissan Xterra.

I'm going to mostly comment here on the use of the MP3 DVD technology, since that is why I bought it.

First off, I ripped my entire music collection to MP3 @ 192kbps. Then I burned a RIDATA DVD+r using Nero Xpress (choose the data option). I left all the defaults, but made sure that the "multi-session" option was un-checked. **You must close the disc for it to work** I burned the complete discographies for 14 bands (a total of 75 folders, and nearly 1000 MP3s) to one DVD+r, popped it into the player and it immediately started playing the first song in the first folder. It also displays the folder name (band name) and then displays the track name. On the right side of the face, you will see the letter 'F' which represents folder number. You can easily advance back and forth through your folders and play the music within them. VERY NICE.

The only MINOR problems I have with it are as follows:

1) You can not ffwd within MP3 tracks, only regular CDs can be ffwded, and it is slow when doing so.

2) It is also a little slow navigating through folders, but I think this is a limitation of the technology.

3) No playlist support.

SUMMARY: No hard drives, easy install, and a resonable price tag for a GIGA MP3 device. I give this unit a 5/5 for giving me what I have been waiting for.

JVC KD-DV5100

Written By John S, Tinton Falls, NJ on Saturday, May 28, 2005

Pros:

1) DVD MP3/WMA Play
2) Great Sound
3) Crutchfield tech support was great (they gave me a second unit to see if an MP3 playback problem was a problem the unit or a design incompatibility; see below)

Cons:

1) 1100 Files/Disc not enough!
2) No support for DVD+R/DVD+RW (works sometimes)
3) I had an MP3 incompatibity, some old MP3s produced some extras sounds after the song ended. JVC tech support was horrible (never replied to the web base report system)! The phone tech guy said maybe I hook the speaker up wrong.
4) Clock goes off when unit is off.
5) MP3 player does not have pause/play on unit only remote.

I resolved my MP3 playback issues by ripping my whole collection with Creative Labs ripper/Windows Media Player at 256Kbits/sec. I have no more MP3 playback problems and the sounds great.

My thanks to the Crutchfield Tech Support.

Only a couple things set it back from 5 stars

Written By Jamie, Phoenix on Saturday, May 28, 2005

I like the player for all the reasons everyone said below, but there are 2 things that kept it from getting 5 stars from me. The first one, and really annoying to me, is if you put it on "random disc" when playing and MP3 disc, it isnt really random. Everytime I turn off my car, it plays the last song I was playing, then starts the same set of random songs over again!! I know it isnt the way I hooked it up, because all my other settings stay the same. So I have to forward a couple of songs, turn off random, and set it again. The other thing, when I first saw this here, Crutchfields website showed it had 2 rca jacks out, one being for the subwoofer. This was before they actually had it, so I preordered. Once I got it, I noticed there was only one set, came back to here to check, and they had changed it. Wasnt enough for me to send it back though.
