JVC

Our take on the JVC KD-G320

JVC knows you're looking for flexibility from your car audio system, so they packed the KD-G320 CD player with all sorts of performance and playback features. And, thanks to its clean, silver faceplate and rotary control knob, this is one entertainment hub that will fit in with just about any interior style.

The stout internal amplifier ensures powerful, clean sound, and a superior 24-bit digital-to-analog converter — rare in this price range — makes your CDs sound better, more faithful to the original recordings. You get six preset sound curves, treble and bass controls, and a loudness contour to adjust the sound to fit your vehicle. And you can command most functions from anywhere in the car with the wireless remote.

Not only will the KD-G320 play back your MP3- and WMA-loaded recordable discs, you can even connect JVC's optional iPod interface for full iPod control right from the faceplate. Satellite radio controls make it easy to add 120-plus channels of music, news, sports, and entertainment to the party.

Two sets of preamp outputs offer convenient connections for your external amplifiers and subs. You even get subwoofer level and frequency controls so you can adjust your bass settings on the fly, without ever leaving the driver's seat.

Highlights:

  • CD player with built-in amplifier (18 watts RMS/50 peak x 4 channels)
  • plays CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs (including discs loaded with MP3 and WMA files)

Features

MP3 Playback: The KD-G320 can play MP3 files that have been recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. The disc must be recorded in one of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet or Romeo. You can directly access folders numbered 01-12 (they must be assigned two-digit numbers when recorded). Each disc can have a maximum of 8 folder hierarchies, 200 folders, and no more than a total of 512 files and/or folders on each disc.

Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect a satellite radio tuner to the KD-G320 in a couple of ways. The unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-JVC1 Satellite Tuner for JVC (item # 607SIRJVC1). The Terk XMDirect universal XM Satellite Radio tuner (209XMD1000) can be connected to and controlled by the head unit when used with the XMDirect Smart Adapter for JVC (209XMDJVC1).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS or XM Satellite Radio.

Custom Equalizer (cEQ): In addition to manual bass and treble settings (-6dB to +6dB @ 100Hz and 10kHz), this unit also has six selectable preset tone control and loudness setting combinations. Each of the sound modes may be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. The preset Custom Equalizer modes are:

  • Rock: Bass = +3, Treble = +1, Loudness = On
  • Classic: Bass = +1, Treble = -2, Loudness = Off
  • Pops: Bass = +4, Treble = +1, Loudness = Off
  • Hip Hop: Bass = +2, Treble = 0, Loudness = On
  • Jazz: Bass = +2, Treble = +3, Loudness = Off
  • User: Bass = 0, Treble = 0, Loudness = Off

Amplifier Gain Control: When you are using the KD-G320 with factory speakers (or those rated to less than 50 watts peak), the Amplifier Gain Control can limit the amount of power being sent to those speakers. When the Amp Gain Control is set to "low," the volume control ranges from 0 (minimum) to 30 (maximum). When using speakers rated higher than 50 watts peak, you can set the Amp Gain Control to "high," and the volume control will range from 0 to 50.

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Output: The rear pair of preamp outputs can be set to "Rear" for full range output with full fading capability, or a non-fading "Woofer" output with a low-pass filter and output level adjustment. When "Woofer" is selected, you can adjust the frequency of the low-pass filter (90, 135, or 180 Hz) and the subwoofer gain (0 to +8). When "Rear" is chosen, these preamp outputs have a voltage of 2.5 V. When "Woofer" is chosen, the voltage is 2.0 V.

Preferred Setting Mode: By activating the Preferred Setting Mode (PSM), you can set the clock, choose the time zone, select the dimmer mode, select the external component type (changer or line input), turn on/off ID3 Tag display, switch between US standard and European tuning spacing, and set the Amplifier Gain control (high/low).

Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).

Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with a dimmer that can manually be set to Off (normal brightness at all times) or On (display is always dimmed).

Optional Interface Adapter for iPod: The optional KS-PD100 adapter allows an iPod digital music player with a dock connector to be hooked up to and controlled by the KD-G320. You'll be able to scroll through all your playlists, albums, artists, genres, and composers directly from the head unit. Song titles and other file information show up right on the head unit display. The iPod is also charged while it is connected to the KD-G320.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is equipped with JVC's "J-Link" CD changer control system. It is fully compatible with JVC's CD/MP3 changer (257CHX1500). Other JVC CH-X series CD changers (except CH-X99 and CH-X100) can be controlled directly by this head unit, however, they are not compatible with MP3 discs. You cannot use the KD-MK series CD changers with this unit, even with an adapter.

Compatibility with Optional Input Adapter: An optional JVC Line Input Adapter (item # 105KSU57) or Aux Input Adapter (item # 105KSU58) may be used to provide an additional auxiliary input on this unit. This feature allows you to connect a portable audio player, such as a portable MP3 player, to this unit as an additional audio source. The adapter connects to the CD changer input on this unit. When the adapter is connected to this unit, a CD changer cannot be connected.

as good as a pioneer

Written By bhavesh, staten island , NY on Friday, April 21, 2006

This is a great stereo . It is very well priced . Even though it doesn't have a mosfet amp ,it sounds preety clear and loud.Display is very nice and readable during day. It reads mp3/wma cds quicker than most other car stereos. My advice if you buy this stereo , you won't be disappointed with its performance and its various adjustable sound settings. Thanks to crutchfield .

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I purchased this unit to replace the factory unit in my 98 RAV4. The factory unit was a two piece am-fm cassette deck with separate CD player. The CD player wouldn't play mp3's,wma's etc. so I wanted to replace the units and since I might trade the car in on a new one in the near future I didn't want to spend a lot of money. The JVC unit works fine and plays mp3 cd's fine. The AM-FM works great too. And the price is low so when I trade cars don't lose that much. This is my first JVC unit and I really like it and would recommend it. Also if I want to add XM or Sirius its ready for it. I installed it in less than an hour. And will use the extra space, that the old cd unit occupied, for my amateur radio fm transceiver.

I'm very impressed! Just installed in my 2006 Nissan Frontier. I'm now hearing bass I've never heard before. This model won the comparison test in the Crutchfield Advisor test of receivers under $130. It looks great and sounds even better.

Great Receiver!!!

Written By schotts631, Woodbridge, Va on Wednesday, April 26, 2006

For those of us out there who only want to listen to CD's, the radio, and keep things simple, this receiver is great! For the price, you can't beat the sound quality and simplistic controls. I bought this receiver so that I could use my iPod with it and never have to keep CDs in my car again and the iPod interface is great. The display shows the song titles, album titles, and artists. Installation in my 02 Tacoma was a snap and took about an hour. The iPod interface is great if you just let it play random songs, however it can be VERY cumbersom to hunt down a specific song or artist if you have as many mp3s as I do. If the unit would remember where you were last at in your folders, that would help, but you have to start over each time you want to find a song/artist/album. Other than that, great value and great sound!

Great Deck

Written By Cody, Sacramento, CA on Friday, March 31, 2006

Great Price for a great unit! Plays anything you throw at it, sleek interface, the message scroll is a little slow, but thats about all the negatives.. The install on a 2000 Corolla took literally 2 minutes with the installation supplies crutchfield provided. Great buy

This was my first purchase from Crutchfield, so let me start off by saying that Crutchfield did a great job processing and shipping my order, it got to me a day earlier than scheduled. The Reciever is a great deal for all the features it has. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the text would washout in the daylight. Other than that the CD player is great, there is little difference between this and the Arsenal version.

it's cheap and it sounds great

Written By cornut, Eugene, OR on Thursday, March 30, 2006

If you are like me and just looking for an inexpensive head unit and caring more about sound than features you wont be disappointed. I purchased this head unit because I deliver mail in a rural area where I use my own vehicle which I drive from the passenger seat. Since I drive from the right side I have my left hand on the steering wheel and use the remote for everything so I dont have to reach across my chest or take my hand off the wheel just to change something. Although the remote may not be as important to you, the stereos sound is as good as the more expensive ones. Another reason for choosing this particular model is because I am a Sirius subscriber and this head unit is Sirius ready, I also purchased the Sirius JVC1 reciever from Crutchfield. The only part that may be an issue to some is the display. It does have a basic one line display so if that is important to you, you might want to move up a couple models. I prefer the simple display for my work car though, no need to have a fancy display. I can see what song is playing and that is all I care about.

My transaction with Crutchfield was great. Every time I visit this site I look at their specials and cant believe some of them.I price out everything here at crutchfield then try to find better prices but I never succeed. With the service/security you get purchasing through Crutchfield is great, knowing you have nothing to worry about is the best feeling ever. They definately take care of you. I am confident with every purchase I make here. The lifetime support would be great if I ever had to use it too but I doubt itll be an issue because the instructions they provide with the items have everything I need.

Installed this deck in my kid's truck and we liked it so much we bought another for the wife's Jeep GC. My wife didn't want a big booming system like the kid has so we simply upgraded speakers and put in a couple of subs with a small amp. Even running off the deck power it sounds great even at higher volumes. Very easy to use without a lot of fancy options you'll never use. Best of all Crutchfield's master sheet made installation super easy. Now everybody's got tunes but me!
