Mostly worthless

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If all you need to do is remove your stereo from the car, this is the set of instructions for you. Installation ? Forget it. I understand there are many ways to install an aftermarket stereo. Some tips, hints, Something would be helpful. Crutchfield recommends a stereo, and components for this car, why not show how to install it ?

Pros: Great car stereo removal instructions. Perfect for the casual stereo thief.

Cons: Worthless for installation.

Crutchfield response on February 1, 2016 Whenever you encounter a problem with anything you purchase from Crutchfield, especially a situation like this, please contact our customer service or tech support teams right away. They can help you solve the problem and get the stereo installed and working! Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.

The hardest part, made easy

Written by: jdr from Oregon on January 16, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Designing, selecting, wiring and installing a car audio system can be easy for someone with experience in other audio electronics hobbies - except for the part where you have to TAKE APART A CAR. That Crutchfield makes their vast expertise in dismantling dashboards etc. available to their customers has always struck me as going above and beyond for a mail-order retailer. I'm sure I've avoided a lot of costly mistakes by following the instructions on my master sheet.

If I was more of a "car person" and less of an "electronics person", I might be disappointed that the master sheet doesn't include more details on wiring. I think a lot of the negative reviews are from people who don't have any problems figuring out where all 14 dashboard screws are, instinctively know that some pieces of plastic can be safely pried apart and others are best left alone, but don't know how to trace a wire from the factory plug to the left rear speaker.

So, if you are OK with electronics stuff and clueless with car stuff, the Master Sheet is for you. If it's the other way around, be prepared to spend some time doing more research.

Pros: The info you need to take your car apart without destroying it in the process.

Cons: If you're expecting detailed wiring instructions, you won't find them here.

Cons: Deceiving.

The installation

Written by: me33 from Texas on October 26, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had no idea how to install rear 6x9 speakers in my car. The guide they sent to me via email really helped. I have completed my install which saved me about $100.00 The only reason I did not give a 5 star is there was a clip that had no explanation as to how I should "unclip it" still I am unsure of the proper way to do it but It left me with a choice of using a screwdriver to pry it apart or to cut the wire and redo it. Went with the screw driver method and got it to work. anything the book does not cover can be covered via calling Crutchfield.

All that being said if you do not know what to do I recommend this.

Pros: - covers main subject matter clearly - anything not covered you can call them about - tells you what tools and socket sizes you need before you start the installation process - has some good picture references - I used this product with success

Cons: - could use 1 more picture explaining a clip I could not figure out by looking at it

The MasterSheet were ok, what was in them was correct and helpful. I am more concerned with what was not in the MasterSheet - specifically any information on how to connect the brake switch wire.

Big Helper

Written by: Mike McL from Virginia on September 7, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a first time installer, I wasn't sure I could handle the project successfully by myself. I'm a reasonably handy person, but this was uncharted territory for me. I was expecting the "Master Sheet" to guide me literally step by step, but was a bit lacking I thought. The information was correct, while not being as minutely detailed as I expected it gives the info needed. In addition any questions you may have are quickly answered by Crutchfield's oustanding techs.

Pros: Couldn't have done it without it.

Cons: None, really.

This a very useful information tool. Perhaps they detailed this point in the ordering process, but I didn't realize it was a digital copy Only It's not that big of a deal, but I would have appreciated a physical copy, so I wouldn't have had to use my own paper and ink.

The product itself was useful, but maybe could have used more and clearer pictures.

master sheet honda accord

Written by: tp from gaithersburg, md on June 22, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

there is nothing bad about the master sheet except the process to obtain one. Given it can be sent electronically having to call someone to order it and a 24 hours or so processing time after purchase makes it less desirable. Also i noticed that almost all (if not more complete) insturctions in the master sheet are available in articles on the site....makes it a hard pill to swallow paying 10 dollars for it....

otherwise i love how much info especially related to car audio installs but also home audio is available from crutchfield...they operate out of my home town but as a company my unbiased opinion is they are awesome to work with.

Not really what I was expecting..

Written by: Joseph from Texas on June 18, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is only useful if you know absolutely Nothing about your vehicle. I thought that the MasterSheet was a full step-by-step guide through your entire install, including wiring, with plenty of pictures. They ask a lot of questions beforehand about your vehicle and what kind of install you're doing and say each MasterSheet is vehicle specific. I was disappointed to receive a mere 15 page PDF with partial information and black and white photos. Why ask so many Specific questions about my '12 Ext Cab just to send a "07 and up" with generic info. This really only shows how to prepare your vehicle for the install(remove old stereo etc), but not much on the actual install of your new stuff. Generic information like that is available on tons of other resources for free. There's a few footnotes about wiring but not near enough to really be helpful. The idea here is good, just needs work. I understand that each install is custom to a point, but a full walkthrough of a common install for the vehicle would've been much more helpful.

Pros: Good buy if you don't even know where to start.

Cons: Not an install guide. More of a removal guide with brief notes on install.

Not worth the money!

Written by: Jeremie from Chesapeake, Va. on June 10, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would have rated it lower than one star but couldn't. I thought I was buying a MasterSheet? It should include a wiring diagram in a MasterSheet not just a few pictures of how to remove dash panels! I even had an electrician say the same thing.

Pros: If your a moron and can't use the Internet to find pics and videos of what you need then this is great I guess.

Cons: Waste of money only includes a few pics and instructions. Either I already new how to do it, found it on the Internet or the instructions were included with the other products I purchased for the install.

This master sheet was exactly what I needed to find out how difficult it would be to do the install myself. It also gave me a preview of what the doors would look like so that I could fabricate brackets and look at dynamat placement beforehand. Well done, Crutchfield!

Pros: All the info needed

Cons: None

The Master Sheet was very detailed. I purchased the Master Sheet first to gauge the difficulty of the job. Later I purchased the speakers from Crutchfield. Without the Master Sheet I would not have attempted this and would have paid well over $100 to have a shop do the install.

The MasterSheet was helpful to a point, I was able to remove the front panel and stereo with instructions from the mastersheet's help. But, what I was really hoping for was more wire identification ie. Color and location for speaker and amp tie in.

Cons: Could have been less generic and more model specific.

Well had a problem with the radio install for my Ford Explorer 2000 2 ,the U shaped wires did not pull the radio out, heard the "click" but no go ,so removed the dash and radio all in one pc,pushed clips from the side and it slide out .Metra 70-1771 Receiver Wiring Harness was easy- color to color . The plastic slide(in the dash for the radio) had a lip around the back edge,(Pioneer FHX-720BT 2-DIN CD Receiver) radio would not slide in ,had to cut the lip off ( not hard to do with a razor knife) Metra 95-5817 Double DIN Installation Dash Kit worked well ,good fit ! So all and all the Crutchfield MasterSheetT was very helpfull ,I would buy it again, my explorer was exception to the rule . Front speaker only had 3 screws ,they didn't put in 4 .I was prepared for Murphy he's family after 60 + years LOL ! Hope this helps. GOTTA LOVE FORD !

Pros: tools, clear step by step, screw location and type .Picture good

Cons: some trucks are different .

Job done correctly

Written by: John from MO on August 6, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The manual was ordered for replacing speakers in the doors or a 2005 Chevy Cav. Got them replaced, and I also got to replace the back speakers, and even the headunit. Because those instructions were also included. It wasn't my first time using it, I also used a manual from MasterSheet for my 2008 Liberty. For the price, you can't beat it for a job done the right way. You go into a task with confidence when you haven't messed with the task previously. Just as long as you have the MasterSheet.

Pros: Pictures, step by step instructions, how to do more than just what you originally ordered the manual for, pdf file so you don't have to have a bunch of papers to deal with, price is worth every penny, gets the job done

Cons: none

1993 Volvo 240 Install

Written by: Dave from Norheast PA on June 6, 2014

The MasterSheet for the Volvo 240 (1993) was good as far as it went. What it didn't include was details about how to access the harness and connector connected to the external amplifier. Since the stock external amplifier is bypassed with this install, access to that connector is necessary. The wire harness set included the correct connector for it, but said that it was located below the steering column. On this model, it is actually located below the HVAC controls in the center console, and is little tricky to get to and remove. Thankfully a person who reviewed the wire harness provided the necessary information in their review.

Pros: Procedure that was described was accurate.

Cons: An essential part of the installation procedure was omitted.

Mastersheet Goodness

Written by: Bryan P. from 37686 on March 12, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little gem helped more than I thought it would. My wife has an 09 Ford Escape XLT and it has very well hidden points of contact on the interior. Plus, I was unfamiliar with the car so I didn't really know where to begin with taking the dash out. I swear I had the head unit out inside of 4 minutes. It may seem a little pricey, but if you're at all unsure about how to go about your install, this is the ONLY way to go. It will tell you up front exactly the tools you need, as well as any tips or tricks they deem relevant. The best part is, it covers every part of the stereo, so if need to know how to pull out the door speakers later, that's included too. The only thing I could say negative about the whole process, is that it wasn't possible to buy this online, I had to call them and order. The guy I spoke to was good, and the transaction was over fast, but I was told the sheet would come in the confirmation email and it didn't. I had to call them back and get it emailed to me because I had a very limited amount of time to work with. That turned out to be a wise move, because I didn't officially even get the mastersheet until 2 days later. Something to work on guys.

Pros: Extremely comprehensive and accurate

Cons: a bit pricey difficult to purchase

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the money, this saved me a lot of time and hassle. The diagrams are simple and there was a diagram for every audio part in the truck. I could have found similar information had I looked hard enough on the internet, but that is never guaranteed, nor as well done. I had a minor issue getting it e-mailed to me (the automated system took 48 hours), but I called in a after 3 hours and they were able to e-mail me one manually so I could get started.

Very nice to have some instructions specific to my vehicle and the photos were basically accurate. It would have been 5 stars if it included the detail about needing to ground the aftermarket head unit. Wiring Harness Diagram

Written by: Bob J from MN on February 18, 2013

Master sheet was excellent on the stereo Install. However Master sheet fails to show the wiring diagram from The Crutchfield provided harness to the Ford Harness. Pioneer owners manual was cryptic to say the least. Finally we just matched colors and everything worked. Which is a tribute to Crutchfield for getting this right.

Cons: Simple statement in the master sheet just to match wiring colors because Crutchfield knows what it is doing would have worked for me.

Master Sheet for 2003 Honda Accord

Written by: midlc from Fenton (St. Louis) MO on February 16, 2013

Unfortunately, like the web site re fit of my speakers in my car, expectations were not met. Only 2 of four mounting holes in the speakers line up with the tapped receivers in the rear deck, and the factory grills will not fit over the replacement speakers without non-minor modification.

Pros: Provides general instructions that give one a good sense of the depth of the job.

Cons: Doesn't accurately relay modifications needed to the car -- sets the expectation that none are needed, when in fact, they are.

Great for Removing Factory Equipement

Written by: Anonymous from Atlanta GA on February 14, 2013

The Mastersheet was great for removing the Factory Equipment not so much for installing the new system. Then again maybe that's the whole point.

Not entirely accurate

Written by: erwin from Austin, TX on February 14, 2013

While this mastersheet can serve as a guide, you cannot use it as a step-by-step instruction sheet for a 2005 Santa Fe. There were several omissions, misstatements, and misguidance.

For example, do not use a 90 deg screwdriver where indicated. A phillips straight screwdriver is much easier. I feel for anyone who tried to use a 90 screwdriver, especially if they went and purchased one on advice fo the mastersheet.

Also, the climate control panel comes out by prying at the top edge of the top 2 corners, not by the sides of the 4 corners as the instructions state (or imply, I don't have them in front of me).

There were other inaccuracies, but I can't remember the details now.

In short, skim the mastersheet for a general guide to the steps involved, but don't waste time trying to follow the steps verbtim (unless your vehicle matches the photos exactly, mine did not).

I HAVE NEVER EVER EVER installed any kind of head unit or speakers before and really not the most mechinally sound individual but it really was that easy. I wish Crutchfield did these instructions for marriage! Thanks Crutchfield great tool

Good for the install with the iPod adapter I purchased but not for the amplified sub woofer I purchased. Of course it's not advertised to help with wiring issues anyway, so it helps with the basics.

Not complete

Written by: jiminkirkland from kirkland, WA on February 8, 2013

Seems like a good idea but-----. Not particularly complete for an installation of my Kenwood x596 into a Honda Element. After installation I found that I had really poor AM/FM reception and was quite dissatisfied with the radio. After I called Crutchfield Support I found that a particular blue wire was NOT supposed to be wired to a particular blue wire but to a blue/white wire. So, out came the radio again. Why couldn't that have been noted in the instructions?

This is why I buy from Crutchfield!

Written by: Gorilla W from NC on February 6, 2013

I have never attempted to install a set of speakers of a stereo in to a car. I was sent detailed instructions on how to install 4 speakers and a stereo into my '08 Mazda 3 and I did so for the first time ever without ease. I ran into one little issue while connecting my old speaker harness to the new ones I bought. I called the Crutchfield help line on a Saturday morning and was given a very quick answer to my question. Awesome! These instructions saved me nearly $300 on doing it myself instead of paying someone else to do it. After I got everything installed I couldn't believe that people would charge this much to install a stereo and 4 speakers. Crutchfield rules!

Pros: Allows anyone with zero experience simple and clear instructions to do the work.

Cons: None

Nearly useless

Written by: Alissa from Madison, WI on February 6, 2013

I'm not sure why this is "worth" the price. The directions were nearly useless and if you had no other resources, would be completely useless. I found forum posts specific to my car that were MUCH more detailed and helpful. Getting this for free was not a perk, but a waste of paper, and pretty much just a marketing gimmick. What would be better to include would be step by step directions on how to take apart the dash and how to actually connect the wires for the wiring harness. In this day and age, there are better resources out there.

Pros: Will make great kindling when grilling season starts up again.

Cons: Nearly uselss.

Can't beat the Crutchfield MasterSheet. If you are at all handy or have installed a car stereo before. this document will get you through the rough parts. I did have to make a call to tech support... However Crutchfield tech support is top notch! This MasterSheet combined with Phone support saved me $350 in installation costs.

Pros: Good photos. Good instructions. Very valuable. Could not have done this install myself without it.

Cons: Could be a little more specific to the exact vehicle, but I understand the need to consolidate and not have thousands of different versions of the MasterSheet. Any cons are negated by great Crutchfield phone support.

Great job with the install sheet - a couple of minor points... if you have the "fold-down rear seats" there is no need to remove them, you can just fold them down to get them out of the way for the speaker install. Also, the wiring harness for the radio does not activate the illumation dimmer / night-time lighting that normally activates with the car headlights on the radio.

The master sheet for installing the sets of speakers for my 2004 Durango was an excellent tool in helping me get the job done right and quickly. The information was detailed and the pictures also are a great help and very detailed. The install went just as described with nohitches at all.

Didn't really help that much

Written by: Danny T. from Oklahoma City, OK on January 24, 2013

I already knew how to get my dash fascia pulled off and how to remove and disconnect the factory stereo. I was hoping the master sheet would provide more detail on how to hook the aftermarket adapter to the new stereo unit. But instead, I had to use the instructions that came with the adapter, which were very complicated and had no diagrams or illustrations, just all text. Thankfully, between my prior electronics training in the Navy, and the help of Crutchfield's tech support folks, I was able to get everything installed and working properly.

Pros: Good for someone who has never pulled apart a GM truck dash before.

Cons: A little too generic, maybe a separate version that goes more in-depth for folks with the Bose factory system.

The Honda Master Sheet I received with my purchase wasn't quite right. The 2005 Civic LX appears to be a combination (in the Master Sheet) of two different vehicles. It really is not an issue for me as I have 25 years of installation experience, lucky me! For the novice, take your time and read thoroughly. You will find that the sheet is accurate in that it does provide all locations correctly - maybe on different sheets, but in total, correct.

Needed More Info

Written by: JayL from San Anselmo CA on January 22, 2013

This was used to install a contemporary Kenwood speaker in a classic 1987 Toyota Supra. Removal of one of the mounting screws on each of the old speakers was virtually impossible due to the limited vertical clearance and a plastic overhand; it could not be accomplished with a stubby Phillips, as suggested, or even with a right angle socket screwdriver. Eventually, the screws were removed with a tedious process using pliers. This should have been mentioned. Also, the instructions said to substitute the new wiring harness. It gave no reason, and there was no necessity to do so-- the old wiring worked fine.

Pros: Gave a pretty good overview of what was necessary.

Cons: Needed to be more specific on when wiring should be replaced, and give reasons. Needed to provide a better solution for removing the old screws than just use of a stubby Phillips

I've never installed a car radio or swapped out speakers. These instructions were utterly useless besides the invoice on the front. Thank goodness there's plenty of people who uploaded videos and How-To's with pictures that actually applied to my car (BMW E46). I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise. Called the "special" number on the front twice, but the technicians were always busy. The instructions showed pictures that weren't my car. It didn't talk about the adapter needed for the radio or the bracket for the speakers. I still don't know if the speakers were attached correctly, but they work.

Written by: Greg from MN on January 17, 2013

Great guide with all the details.I would give it a five star rating if they fix the following: 1. Include the instillation guide for only your model vehicle. I have a '04 Ford F-150 super crew cab and was a bit confused as they had the standard and crew instructions before the super crew cab instructions. 2. Refine the wiring guide for the harness adapter. The colors of the wires are not always the same shade and they can be confusing at first.

The master sheet wasn't bad, a great guide on how to remove the previous system. Not so much for installing the new one. Excellent in some ways, flawed in others

Written by: Mike L from Rochester, NY on January 13, 2013

The master sheet was excellent at describing the process of removing the radio from the dash. But like the product's (USA Spec iPod Interface) instructions it failed to describe the radio that I have and in this case left me figuring out how to connect the device. Both instruction sheets assume that everyone installing this has Nav or a CD changer - I have a single CD radio. The connector plug for the interface connects in a completely different way for this radio than for those with Nav, XM or a CD changer. It does not connect in-line with the stock wiring harness, but rather to an open plug on a different part of the radio than the instructions indicate. This caused confusion and delay for me and ended up with a much longer installation than Crutchfield suggested.

Pros: Step-by-step, clear descriptions of what you need to do to remove the radio; good illustrations

Cons: Doesn't recognize that some of us are cheap and don't buy cars with Nav, XM, CD changers, etc.
