Our take on the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 2030

by Steve Kindig
Epson

Big-screen thrills on a budget

Epson PowerLIte Home Cinema 2030

It's hard to imagine a better introduction to home theater projectors than Epson's Home Cinema 2030. Its big, bright, crisp picture makes every movie feel like you're sitting in a cinema. And watching life-sized images of high-impact sports at home will keep you and your buddies cheering even when your team is losing.

There's more than just impressive image size going on here. Over the past couple years Epson has really nailed the 3-LCD technology at the heart of the 2030. Separate red, green, and blue image chips produce rich, realistic colors. Each chip has full 1080p resolution to reveal lifelike textures and details in every scene. The 2030 can also do a nice job with 3D video, but if you want to experience it you'll need to spring for some 3D glasses as none are included.

Designed for real-world living rooms

The Home Cinema 2030 has a room-friendly design to go along with its wallet-friendly price. Several picture setting presets make it easy to get a high-quality picture under different room and lighting conditions without fussing or fiddling.

For example, Living Room mode is intended for use in a living room with some lamps or other lights on. The color balance is intentionally shaded slightly toward the "cool" or blue end of the spectrum, to compensate for the yellowish light from typical room lighting. On the other hand, If you plan to watch mostly movies in a darkened or dimly lit room, you'll probably prefer the Cinema mode, which lowers the projector's overall light output and automatically engages the dynamic iris, which adjusts light output on a scene-by-scene basis to maximize picture contrast and black levels.

Quick, easy setup means showtime can be anytime

For spur-of-the-moment or "event" viewing, the 2030 sets up easily on a table. Or you can get a bracket and ceiling-mount it. Two HDMI inputs are available for your high-definition sources, and there's also a standard PC input. One of the HDMI inputs is MHL-compatible, which means you can watch up to 1080p-quality video by connecting your smartphone, or a media streamer like the Roku Streaming Stick — a plug 'n' play way to access services like Netflix® and Hulu Plus. Use the USB input to connect your camera or a thumb drive — the projector's internal software lets you run slide shows without connecting a computer.

For optimum performance, a separate projection screen is recommended.

Features

3LCD, 3-chip Technology: The Home Cinema 2030 features 3LCD, 3-chip technology to give you rich, vibrant images for enjoying spectacular movies, games, and sporting events in your home, or to deliver sizzling business presentations at the office. This technology requires 25% less electricity per lumen of brightness when compared to 1-chip DLP projectors.

Projection Lamp: The projector uses an energy-efficient 200-watt Ultra High Efficiency (UHE) lamp with a life span of approximately 5,000 hours in the Normal Mode. In the ECO mode, the life span is increased to approximately 6,000 hours. The lamp (Part # V13H010L78) and air filter (Part #V13H134A32 ) are the only user-serviceable parts.

Fan Cooled: The projection lamp is kept cool by a fan. The fan noise level is 37dB in Normal mode and 29dB in ECO mode. If the projector is to be used at an altitude above 4921 feet (1500 meters), the High Altitude Mode should be turned on so the fan can properly cool the projector at the high altitude air pressure.

Lens: The Home Cinema 2030 features a F1.58-1.72 lens with a focal length of 16.9mm to 20.28mm. It has a manual focus and a manual zoom ratio of 1.0 to 1.2. The projector automatically compensates for vertical keystone distortion (+/- 30°) when it is tilted upward or downward. Manual horizontal keystone adjustments (+/- 30°) can be made using the top-mounted slide control. The projector does not have a lens shift feature.

Light Output: In the normal mode, the PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 outputs 2,000 lumens of white light and 2,000 lumens of color light for bright, balanced colorful images. The white light output is measured using ISO 21118, a more rigid standard than the ANSI lumens rating used by many competitors. Light output in the ECO mode is 1,400 lumens. The projector is capable of a dynamic contrast ratio up to 15,000:1.

1080P Native Resolution: The PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 has a native resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080; 16:9 aspect ratio). The total number of pixels is 2,073,600 dots (1920 x 1080) x 3. You can resize the picture by changing the aspect ratio to 4:3 or 16:10.

Projection Distance: The distance at which you place the projector from the screen determines the approximate size of the image. The projection distance can be determined from this chart:

Screen/Image Size Projection Distance (wide to tele)
16:9 Aspect Ratio 4:3 Aspect Ratio 16:10 Aspect Ratio
50 inches 53 to 64 inches 65 to 78 inches 57 to 69 inches
80 inches 85 to 103 inches 105 to 126 inches 93 to 111 inches
100 inches 107 to 129 inches 131 to 158 inches 116 to 139 inches
150 inches 161 to 194 inches 198 to 238 inches 175 to 210 inches

Multiple Sources: The PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 has inputs for multiple sources to give you lots of choices. For connecting to your video equipment, the unit features two HDMI (Ver.1.4) inputs and a composite video input w/ a stereo RCA input. You can also connect your computer to the projector via the VGA input (D-Sub 15-pin).

MHL Compatible: The HDMI 1 input is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL certified smartphone into the unit's HDMI1 input using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images from your mobile smartphone. The included IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the projectors HDMI 1 input. To find MHL-certified devices, go to www.mhlconsortium.org.

3D Ready: Epson's advanced Bright 3D Drive technology enhances the brightness giving you theater-quality 3D images in your home. To view 3D content, you must first connect a 3D-compatible video device to one of the HDMI ports. You will also need Epson RF Active Shutter 3D glasses (278RF3DG, sold separately) for each viewer.

Compatible Video Formats: The projector supports analog video in NTSC, PAL, and SECAM formats, and it automatically adjusts to the incoming signal. It can receive these formats as composite or component video. The projector also supports digital video (SDTV, HDTV) and various monitor display formats. Digital video is accepted by HDMI. The PC port accepts analog RGB computer monitor signals.

USB Storage Devices: Using the projector's USB (type-A) port on the rear panel, you can connect a USB storage device, such as a USB flash drive or digital camera and project still images (JPEG, BMP, GIF, and PNG). The device must be USB Mass Storage Class compatible, and the images formatted in FAT or FAT32. The images can be displayed in full-screen manually one at a time, or automatically in a slide show with custom settings.

Auto Iris: The Auto Iris system constantly controls the light output based on the gamma and black/white levels of the projected content to give you perfectly adjusted images and deepest blacks. Using the remote, you can select either Normal or High Speed to indicate how quickly you would like the projector to respond to changes in the brightness of the image.

Color Modes: The PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 offers seven color modes to optimize viewing for different environments and image content. The Color Mode adjusts the brightness, contrast, and color for the best possible picture. A different color mode can be selected for each input source. You can select from the following choices:

  • Auto: automatically adjusts to the brightness of your surroundings
  • Dynamic: for projecting the brightest picture available
  • Living Room: for watching television programs during the day
  • Natural:
  • Cinema: for viewing movies in a dimly lit room
  • 3D Dynamic: for projecting the brightest 3D picture available (3D mode only)
  • 3D Cinema: for viewing 3D movies in a dimly lit room (3D mode only)

Advanced Color Adjustments: In addition to the Color Modes, you can manually adjust the projector's Brightness, Contrast, Color Saturation, Tint, Sharpness, and Color Temperature. You can also go a step further and individually adjust the gain, saturation, and brightness for each color; red (R), green (G), blue (B), cyan (C), magenta (M), and yellow (Y) components.

Adjustable Image Size & Lens Projection Distance: The PowerLite Home Cinema 2030 projector can produce an image that is adjustable between 34" and 328" (measured diagonally). The projector's adjustable lens provides a wide range of placement possibilities for a given screen size. The projection distance (distance from lens to screen) range is 2.75' to 36.4'.

Built-in Speaker + Audio Output: The Home Cinema 2030 has a built-in, rear-panel mono speaker. It also features a stereo 3.5mm audio output to connect an external AV receiver or powered speaker.

Remote Control: In addition to the control panel, the projector can be controlled by the supplied wireless remote control, which has a range of approximately 19.7'. The projector has infrared receivers on the front and rear to give you control from most anywhere in the room. An RS-232C port is included for connecting the projector to a 3rd party A/V controller or automation system.

HDMI Link: When you connect HDMI CEC-compatible devices, such as a receiver or Blu-ray player, to the projector via HDMI cables, you can control them using the HDMI-Link control buttons on the projector's remote control. You can register the devices you want to operate in the HDMI Link section of the projector's menu.

Sleep Mode: The projector turns off automatically when no video signal is received for a preset amount of time. You can set the sleep mode to 5, 10, or 30 minutes.

Warranty and Extra Care Home Service: The projector is covered by a 2-year parts and labor warranty, while the lamp is covered for 90 days. Included with the warranty, Epson offers Extra Care Home Service. A replacement unit (in most cases, a refurbished unit) will be shipped to you immediately. (A credit card is required for security deposit.) If it's important that you receive your original projector back, you should use the basic carry-in service instead of Home Service.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a high resolution projector for presenting finacial data in meetings (a lot of columns). This really did the trick and was very clear and bright. I was very pleased at how easy it was to get setup.

Awesome Projector

Written By Bob, Overland Park, KS on Thursday, November 28, 2013

It's always hard to put something together without trying it out first but it came together perfect. Love the projector. Haven't tried the 3D yet but I'm guessing there won't be any negative impressions.
Pros:
Easy set up. No book necessary.
Cons:
Didn't have the projector screen sensor port.

2 questions already asked

My question is about the audio out options, does this support HDMI audio return? For instance if I have a MHL Roku Streaming stick on HDMI 1, can I use HDMI 2 for Audio return to a receiver/amp or is the stereo 3.5mm audio out the only option? [ ChipB  Mar 31, 2014 ]

  • We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff Staff  Apr 03, 2014 ]
I would like to know whether the contrast ratio of this projector(15000:1) is good enough or not. Compared to Epson 3020(my other choice but much more expensive) its contrast ratio is much less. Does the picture looks washed out? or is it worth watching movies with good special effects? [ Sameer  Dec 22, 2013 ]

  • Epson is the best. [ MALCOM J J   Jan 02, 2014 ]
  • Kevin, thanks for replying.I will be playing this projector in the living room which has some light from the drawn curtains. I am not so concerned about the 3D because it is still difficult/expensive to rent 3D movies:) It sure is a good benefit.i just want my blu-ray movies to show beautifully, bright, crisp with good color and contrast for the next 5 years.the rebate ends soon i believe, so i wanted to take a decision soon between this or the epson 3020. [ Sameer   Dec 23, 2013 ]
  • Honestly I've not installed the projector yet. From what I've been told the contrast ratio is fine if you have a home theater room with no windows that can be blacked out. If you have windows that let in some light or your sharing a partially lit game room/family room I'd consider the higher contrast ratio...but you lose 3D capability unless you go two models up. If you are willing to wait I may have the projector setup in a week or two with the screen. [ KEVIN   Dec 23, 2013 ]
