This versatile projector/DVD combo will add magic to your movie nights
Slip a DVD into Epson's MovieMate 85HD and enjoy a beautiful picture with the size and "pop" that makes projector viewing so thrillingly different from just watching TV. The 85HD combines a 720p high-definition projector and a DVD player in one neat, convenient package.

Epson's projector expertise shines though
Projector/DVD player combos have been around for years, but we never took them very seriously because they emphasized convenience over picture quality. What makes MovieMate different is Epson's tried-and-true 3-chip LCD imaging system. 3-chip projectors have a big advantage over single-chip models that use a color wheel. Separate red, green, and blue LCD image chips ensure smooth, accurate, vivid colors.

Super easy to set up and use
Setup is quick and easy, and with a built-in handle and carrying case, you can take the show on the road. And you don't need a totally darkened room, either — this projector has the light power to produce a bright, crisp picture measuring up to 120" or more, even in rooms with some lights on.

DVDs are only the beginning
Besides the built-in DVD player, you can hook up your other video sources: high-def satellite TV or cable box, game console, computer, or a camcorder. Load up a thumb drive with your latest photos, plug it into the USB port, and see your snapshots life-sized. There's even a microphone input and a pair of small built-in speakers so you can narrate a slide show, or sing karaoke (OK, maybe not).

For optimum performance, a separate projection screen is recommended.

Features

3LCD, 3-chip Technology: The Epson MovieMate 85HD features 3LCD, 3-chip technology to give you rich, vibrant images for enjoying spectacular movies, games, and sporting events in your home, or to deliver sizzling business presentations at the office. This technology requires 25% less electricity per lumen of brightness when compared to 1-chip DLP projectors.

Projection Lamp: The projector uses an energy-efficient E-TORL 200-watt Ultra High Efficiency (UHE) lamp with a life span of approximately 4000 hours in the Normal Mode. In the ECO mode, the life span is increased to approximately 5000 hours. The lamp (Part # V13H010L66) and air filter (Part # V13H134A26) are the only user-serviceable parts.

Light Output: In the normal mode, the MovieMate 85HD outputs 2500 lumens of white light and 2500 lumens of color light for bright, balanced colorful images. The white light output is measured using ISO 21118, a more rigid standard than the ANSI lumens rating used by many competitors. The projector is capable of a contrast ratio up to 3000:1 (Auto Iris on). The native contrast ratio is up to 300:1.

Built-in DVD: The MovieMate 85HD features a built-in slot-loading DVD player for viewing Region 1 DVDs and other media. The player also supports DVD-R/RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL, Audio CDs, and discs with MP3, WMA, WMV, MPEG, and JPEG files. It is not compatible with Blu-ray discs. The unit's coaxial digital output on the rear panel can output a Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream from a DVD.

Native Resolution/Resizing: The MovieMate 85HD has a native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels (16:10 aspect ratio), and is capable of 720p High Definition performance. You can resize your images by changing the aspect ratio to 4:3 or 16:9.

Built-in Speakers: The projector features built-in speakers with volume control on the unit and the remote control. This allows you to listen to the audio from your selected source without having to turn on your entire sound system. You can choose between stereo sound and virtual surround sound, and select from several audio modes, such as Concert, Drama, Action or Standard. For Audio CDs, the modes are Classic, Jazz, Rock, and Digital. The speakers are powered by a 10-watt per channel stereo amplifier.

Color Modes: The MovieMate 85HD offers six color modes to optimize viewing for different environments and image content. The Color Mode adjusts the brightness, contrast, and color for the best possible picture. You can select from these Color Modes:

  • Auto: selects the best mode for your surroundings
  • Dynamic: for projecting in a bright room
  • Living Room: for projecting in a room with blinds closed
  • Theatre: for natural-toned movies in a darkened room
  • Game: for playing fast-motion games in a bright room (this option is available only when connected to external equipment)
  • Blackboard: Use to project accurate colors on a green chalkboard (adjusts the white point)

Lens/Keystone Correction: The 1.2x projection lens offers manual focus and manual zoom for easy picture adjustments. If the projector is placed below or above screen level, you may need to tilt the projector, causing "keystone" shaped distortion of the image. The projector's Auto Keystone function detects and corrects vertical keystone distortion (0° to 11°). Manual keystone correction (up to +/- 30°) can further adjust the shape of the image until it is evenly rectangular.

Adjustable Image Size: The MovieMate 85HD projector can produce an image that is adjustable between 33" and 318" (measured diagonally).

Lens Projection Distance: The projector's adjustable lens provides a wide range of placement possibilities for a given screen size. The projection distance (distance from lens to screen) range is 3' to 35.7'. The distance for several screen sizes at 16:10, 4:3, and 16:9 aspect ratios are given below:

Screen Size Projection Distance (in feet)

DVD Controls: Basic DVD controls (stop, play, pause) are located on the projector's top panel. Full DVD controls can be found on the supplied remote. DVD/CD playback functions include repeat and program play. To limit children's access, you can "lock" up to 40 DVDs to prevent viewing by requiring a password, or you can "lock" the power button on the control panel.

Microphone Input: The MovieMate 85HD includes a 3.5mm microphone input on the rear panel. The mic input level can be adjusted with the remote or through the Options menu. The projector is compatible with dynamic microphones.

Controls

Multiple Sources: The MovieMate 85HD has inputs for multiple sources to give you lots of choices. For connecting to your video equipment, the unit features one HDMI input, a component video input, and a composite video input (a stereo RCA audio input is provided for the component and composite video inputs). If you have an iPod with video capability, you can play your videos or music through the projector (optional audio/video cables required). The projector also has a USB Type A port for connecting a digital camera, a USB flash drive, or other types of USB devices. You can also connect your computer to the projector via the VGA input and stereo RCA audio input. (The Type B USB port is for service only.)

Control Panel: The projector features a control panel, conveniently located on the top panel. The controls include:

  • Power: turns projector on or off
  • Source Search: search for connected video sources
  • Play/Pause: starts/resumes play and pauses DVD
  • Stop: stops DVD
  • Volume: separate volume up and volume down
  • Setup: accesses setup menu (DVD settings)
  • Menu: accesses DVD menu (chapter selection, etc.)
  • 5-way Control: left, right, up, down, and enter buttons for navigating and selecting menu items
  • Visual Setup: accesses Visual Setup menu (projector settings)

  • Indicators: LEDs indicate power on (inside power button), lamp on, and temperature warning

Remote Control: In addition to the control panel, the projector and built-in DVD player can be controlled by the supplied wireless remote control, which has a range of approximately 19 feet. The projector has infrared receivers on the front and rear to give you control from most anywhere in the room.

Slideshow Feature: Whenever you connect a disc or USB device that contains JPEG image files, you can show the images in a slideshow fashion. For an instant PowerPoint presentation, you can save your PowerPoint slides as JPEG images, and store them in a folder on the disc or USB device. You can select individual slides or folders by using the arrows and enter buttons on the remote. If your disc or USB device contains both music files and JPEG photos, you can play a slideshow with music.

Sleep Timer: The projector turns off automatically when a DVD is stopped for more than 30 minutes. You can also select a time to turn off the projector while a movie is playing, in case you fall asleep watching. The sleep timer can be set 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120, or 150 minutes.

Mounting Options

Mounting: The MovieMate 85HD can be placed upright on a tabletop or the floor. You can adjust the image position by raising or lowering the two front feet. It has an integrated handle on the side which allows you to carry the projector easily when transporting. A commercially-available security cable or Kensington lock can be attached to the unit to prevent theft when installed in a public location. Because of the DVD player, it cannot be inverted and mounted on the ceiling.

Projector Case: The MovieMate 85HD comes with a padded case for storage or for transporting the projector.

Warranty Information

Warranty and Extra Care Home Service: The projector is covered by a 2-year parts and labor warranty, while the lamp is covered for 90 days. Included with the warranty, Epson offers Extra Care Home Service. A replacement unit (in most cases, a refurbished unit) will be shipped to you immediately. (A credit card is required for security deposit.) If it's important that you receive your original projector back, you should use the basic carry-in service instead of Home Service.
