Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to use, simple to operate; date-based filing, excellent sound quality. If you don't need stereo or WAVE files; this is the

Pros: Excellent sounding play back speaker and recording quality; simple operation; calendar-based filing; additional SD memory card capable and file transfer.

Cons: None for what the DP-311 is designed to do. If you want a voice recorder with 120 pages of instructions on features, and 115 pages that you will never use, then go purchase another model.

Overview: The Olympus Note Corder DP-311 is a compact, easy-to-use, hand-held portable digital voice recorder. The recorder has a built-in 2 GB flash memory for hours of recording time, and an SD card expansion slot so you can use different memory cards for different occasions. LCD Display: The DP-311 features a large, 2.14" (diagonal), easy-to-read monochrome LCD display which indicates recording and playback information, as well as the current date. You can select from 13 different menu languages, including English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian.

Simple Operation: The unit has large, clearly marked, shaped buttons for Play/OK, Stop, and Record, making the recorder easy to operate.

Built-in Microphone: The unit features a built-in electret condenser microphone on the top of the recorder. In addition to the built-in microphone, the recorder also has a 3.5mm external microphone input. The microphone sensitivity can be set to low or high.

Built-In 2 GB Flash Memory: The DP-311 Digital Voice Recorder features a built-in 2 GB flash memory which can hold hours of audio or voice memos.

Memory Card Slot: In addition to the 2 GB built-in memory, the DP-311 has a memory card expansion slot for more recording capacity. The slot will accept SD and SDHC memory cards from 512 MB to 32 GB. You can use the cards like cassette tapes and record different events on separate cards. When you're finished recording, you can upload your files to your computer with a card reader or the built-in card slot on your computer.

Note: The DP-311 does not have a USB port for connecting directly to your computer.

File Recording: The DP-311 organizes recorded files by days. You can record up to 99 files per day. You can also use the calendar to record a voice memo on a future date. Up to ten 1-minute voice memos can be recorded per day. They are managed in the internal memory. As you look at the calendar on the display, you can see which days contain recorded files (indicated by an underline) and/or voice memos (indicated by a corner triangle).

Recording Modes: The DP-311 records MP3 audio files in 3 modes. Using the side-mounted Mode Dial, you can select from the following Recording Modes:

  • Conversation: Recorded at 64 kbps, the Conversation mode is a High Quality mode that is suitable to record two or more voices in conversation or for recording interviews, lectures or meetings. The microphone sensitivity is set to High to record voices from a distance. Frequency Response: 70 Hz to 11 kHz.
  • Loud Sound: Recorded at 64 kbps, the Loud Sound mode is a High Quality mode that is suitable for recording audio from live bands or large singing groups. The microphone sensitivity is set to Low to record loud sounds without distortion. Frequency Response: 70 Hz to 11 kHz.
  • Dictation: Recorded at 24 kbps, the Dictation mode is a Standard Quality mode, suitable for recording personal notes, dictation, or voice memos. The microphone sensitivity is set to Low to record your voice in close proximity without distortion. Frequency Response: 70 Hz to 3800 Hz.

Playback Speed: You can adjust the playback speed as you desire; slowing it down to review spots you couldn't understand, or speeding it up to listen to meeting content at a faster speed. You can choose from Normal Playback (x1.0 Play), Slow Playback (x0.5 or x0.75), or Fast Playback (x1.2, x1.5, or x2.0).

Stand: The recorder has an integrated stand on the back of the body, that can be used to place the unit at an angle when placed on a tabletop. The stand is designed to reduce the noise that can be picked up from the surface of the table during recording, and provides a better angle for recording voices during a meeting or lecture.

Noise Canceling: During playback, the Noise Canceling function reduces background noise from the recording, allowing you to hear the recorded voices better. Playback speed returns to normal when Noise Canceling is activated.

Power Requirements: The recorder is powered by two "AAA"-sized alkaline batteries (included). Typical battery life is as follows:

Function Recording Modes
Loud Sound
Recording 60 hours 81 hours
Playback (built-in speaker) 23 hours 24 hours
Playback (earphones) 57 hours 62 hours

Erase: You can erase your recorded files one at a time, or all files recorded on a particular date, or all files at once.

Hold Function: The DP-311 has a Hold function that will lock the buttons to prevent accidental operations. The Hold function is activated by sliding the power switch to the Off position while the recorder is in operation.
