Edit and Playback Functions
Overview: The Olympus DS-2500 is a compact, hand-held portable digital voice recorder
with features found in professional dictation systems. The
recorder records onto SD memory cards (a 2 GB card is included) for
hours of recording time. It has a built-in microphone, a 23mm diameter mono speaker, and
jacks for an external microphone and headphones. The DS-2500 operates on two
"AAA" Ni-MH rechargeable batteries (included). It can also work with alkaline batteries.
LCD Display: The DS-2500 features a 1-5/8" (diagonal)
LCD display which indicates recording and playback information. The recorder
will display the elapsed or remaining recording time in hours, minutes, and
seconds. When not recording, the current time can be displayed. You can set the
display contrast to one of 12 levels, and the backlight duration is
Date and Time: The recorder features a built-in clock. If
you have set the time and date, information as to when a sound file was recorded
is stored automatically with that file.
Built-in Microphone: The unit features a built-in
microphone on the top of the recorder. You can set the recording level to
Dictation, a low-sensitivity mode for close-up recording, and Conference, a
high-sensitivity mode that records distant sounds in all directions. In addition to the built-in microphones, the
recorder also has a 3.5mm external microphone input.
Memory Card Slot: The DS-2500 has no built-in memory,
but has a slot for SD memory cards. The slot
will accept SD and SDHC memory cards from 512 MB to 32 GB. A 2 GB SD card is
USB Port: The DS-2500 has a Mini-B 2.0 USB port at
the bottom to let you connect the unit to your computer for transferring
files or charging (when using the rechargeable batteries). The unit is Hi-speed USB
2.0-compatible, and can work with the following Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP,
and Mac OS X (v10.4.11-v10.7).
Power Requirements: The recorder is powered by two "AAA"-sized Nickel-Metal Hydride
(NiMH) batteries (included). The batteries charge via USB in approximately 3
hours. Fully-charged batteries provide approximately 40 hours of battery life
when recording in QP mode, 50 hours in SP mode, and 48 hours in playback mode
(with earphones). An optional A514 AC adapter is available for charging the
Power Save: The Power Save function switches the unit to
Standby after a preset amount of time without a button being pressed. You can
set the Power Save duration to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or
Recording Format: The DS-2500 records audio files in the DS2
format, the Digital Speech Standard Pro (DSS Pro). There are two Recording
Modes: QP for higher quality recordings and SP for maximum recording time:

File Structure: The DS-2500 features five folders that will
hold up to 200 files each, for a total of 1000 recordings.
VCVA Function: You can set the DS-2500 to automatically start
recording when it picks up sound and shut off when the sound stops. The Variable
Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) lets you adjust the volume level threshold for
starting and stopping recording. The VCVA level can be set to any of 15
Recording Options: There are other options when recording
- Append: The recording starts at the end of the current
- Overwrite: You can overwrite a previously recorded file
from any point within the file.
- Insert: Additional recording can be inserted into a
previously recorded file.
Edit and Playback Functions
Playback Speed: You can adjust the playback speed as you
desire; slowing it down to review spots you couldn't understand, or speeding it
up to listen to meeting content at a faster speed. Each time you press the Speed
button, you can switch between Normal Playback, Slow Playback (-50%), or Fast Playback (+50%).
Index Marks: Setting an index mark
lets you quickly find a location you want to listen to while fast forwarding or
fast rewinding. Up to 32 index marks can be placed on a single file.
Erase: You can erase your recorded
messages one by one, or all messages in a folder at one time.
Protect Files: To prevent a file from being accidentally
erased or edited, you can protect an important file. When a file is protected,
it is regarded as a read-only file. Protection can be released, if desired.
Hold Function: The DS-2500 has a Hold function that will
lock the buttons to prevent accidental operations. The Hold function is
activated by sliding the power switch to the right.
DSS Player Software: The included DSS Player software helps
you manage your files on your computer. Once the software has been loaded to
your computer, the DSS Player application automatically starts when you connect
the device. In addition, new dictation files are automatically downloaded when
the device is connected. The software is compatible with the following Operating
