Our take on the Olympus OM-D E-M10 (no lens included)

by Eric Angevine
Olympus

Want a camera you can grow into? Try a compact system camera.

These digital cameras combine the creative options of a DSLR with portability that's more like that of a point-and-shoot. Their automatic modes will help you take striking pictures from day one without having to be an expert. However, like DSLRs, compact system cameras (CSCs) have interchangeable lenses, and advanced control and processing. You can explore these features for even better results as you take time to learn more about the hobby. Cameras in this class have large image sensors for beautifully detailed pictures, but their mirrorless design means the camera bodies and matching lenses can be smaller, lighter, and more portable — great for snapping memorable pics when you're on the move.

Olympus OM-D E-M10

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 features a 3", tilting touchscreen for convenience in framing your shot.

Powerful and portable

Olympus gave the OM-D E-M10 a light and portable design, along with stylish retro appeal. Delve below the surface, and you'll see it's got the goods where it counts, as well. A 16-megapixel CMOS sensor is paired with the powerful TruePic VII processor for precise colors rendered at high resolution. The E-M10 uses internal image stabilization designed along three axis points — yaw, pitch and roll — to reduce blurring when you and your camera are moving. If you're shooting your sister's stage debut, the camera's three-dimensional 81-point autofocus grid will keep the focus where it should be, whether she's moving left, right, up, down, closer to the lens, or farther away. Keep track of your scene by looking through the electronic viewfinder or watching the tilting 3" high-definition touchscreen — either way you'll know exactly what you're getting when you press the shutter button.

Artistry at your fingertips

The E-M10 can produce beautiful, creative photographs. That doesn't mean you have to be an expert to work it. Automatic modes allow the camera to choose the appropriate aperture, shutter speed and sensitivity while you're learning your craft. When you're ready to take more creative control, you can choose which parts of the process you want to adjust manually at any time. If you know you'll be in the same shooting environment for a while, preset white-balance modes for sun, clouds, shadows and even fluorescent lighting are pre-programmed for your convenience. Built-in Picture Modes let you apply custom filters on the spot, creating artistic effects that can take your photos and videos to the next level.

Wi-Fi inside

You may not want to wait until later to upload your photos to the web, and with the E-M10, you don't have to. Just find a Wi-Fi hot spot and use the built-in wireless function to connect with your smartphone. Then you can archive, edit or share on social media instantly. The E-M10 also features geotagging, so you can put the relevant geographical information into the file — it's great for vacations and adventures. You'll never forget where you were when you took the shot.

Features

Overview: The OM-D is a new mirrorless, digital interchangeable lens camera series from Olympus. It features a Micro Four Thirds mount and a lineup of quality lenses to choose from. The OM-D's compact size and weight makes is easier to use. Advanced features include a 5-axis Image Stabilization System, fast auto focusing, a 16MP Live MOS image sensor, and an Electronic Viewfinder. This OM-D package (E-M10 body only) includes no lenses.

Compatible Lenses: The E-M10 is compatible with the following Olympus Micro Four Thirds lenses: 12mm F2.0, 17mm F1.8, 45mm F1.8, 60mm F2.8, ED 12-40mm F2.8, 14-42mm F3.5-5-6 II R, ED14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ, 75-200mm F4.8-6.7 II, 75mm F1.8, and 9-18mm F4.0-5.6.

Image Pickup Device: The E-M10 uses a 4/3" Live MOS sensor with approximately 17,200,000 total pixels and 16,050,000 effective pixels. This is the same sensor used in Olympus DSLRs, and is 8 times larger than the typical sensor found in the average point-and-shoot camera. The Live MOS sensor is complimented by Olympus' new TruePic VII Image Processor with Fine Detail Processing II technology for increased ISO sensitivity and fast auto focusing.

Dust Reduction System: The E-M10's Dust Reduction System includes a Supersonic Wave Filter to eliminate dust particles on the image sensor. The self-cleaning sensor unit silently vibrates 30,000 times per second, ensuring clear, spot-free images.

3" LCD Monitor: The camera has a 3" Vari-angle LCD touchscreen display for framing your shots and viewing your digital pictures and videos. The 1,040,000-dot display can be tilted up to 80° or down to a 50° angle for low- or high-angle shots. Touch navigation lets you control the camera in both the shooting and playback modes with the touch of a finger.

Electronic Viewfinder: In addition to the 3" monitor, the E-M10 has a built-in, high-resolution Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) with a 120 fps refresh rate. The 1,440,000 dot EVF provides a bright clear view of your subject with a choice of four display modes (information, histogram, level gauge, image only). An eye sensor next to the viewfinder automatically switches between the EVF and the 3" monitor. There is also a diopter to let you adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight.

Built-in Wi-Fi: You can use the wireless LAN functions on the camera to share and transfer images wirelessly, and operate the camera remotely from a Wi-Fi-connected smartphone. The smartphone must be running the Olympus Image Share (OI.Share) application, available from Google Play for Android devices (version 2.3 and up) and from iTunes for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (iOS 5 or later). Up to 4 devices can be simultaneously connected via QR code. In addition, you can add location information to your images when using a smartphone with a GPS function. The wireless LAN function on the camera cannot be used to connect to a home or public access point.

Image Recording Formats: The E-M10 records digital still images in JPEG format, as well as RAW uncompressed images. RAW images can be processed into JPEG files in the camera or using the supplied software. You can record up to 30 seconds of audio with still images in WAV format. Movies are recorded in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 and AVI Motion JPEG with 16-bit PCM stereo audio at a 48 kHz sampling rate.

Note: The E-M10 can record 3D photos in MPO format when used with the optional H-FT012 3D lens from Panasonic.

Still Image File Sizes: The E-M10 allows you to shoot still images in 8 sizes with your choice of 4 compression modes. You can set the aspect ratio to 4:3, 16:9, 3:2, 1:1 or 3:4. Compression modes available for each picture resolution are Super Fine (1/2.7 compression), Fine (1/4), Normal (1/8), and Basic (1/12). RAW images can be recorded only in 4608 x 3456 resolution with lossless compression (approximately 1/1.5 compression). Available image sizes for each aspect ratio include:

Fisheye Effect, Wide Angle, Macro, 3D Photo are available with optional converters or lenses.
  • Movie Shooting Modes: You can shoot movies using the shutter speed and aperture effects and movie special effects.

Picture Modes (Processing Options): The camera lets you select image tones to create unique image effects. For each picture mode, you can fine-adjust the image parameters, such as contrast and sharpness. The Picture Modes include:

  • i-Enhance: produces more impressive-looking pictures matched to the scene mode
  • Vivid: produces vivid colors
  • Natural: produces natural colors
  • Muted: produces flat tones
  • Portrait: produces beautiful skin tones
  • Monotone: produces black and white tones
  • Custom: lets you select one of the above modes, set the parameters, and register the setting.

Focus Modes: The E-M10 features a fast, contrast type auto focus system. You can select Single-AF (focuses when shutter button is pressed halfway), Continuous-AF (always focusing), or Manual (turning the focus ring). You can also fine-adjust the focus manually by turning the focus ring after AF is performed in the S-AF mode. If you have a moving subject, you can use the AF Tracking feature. In this mode, the camera will track and maintain focus on the subject while the shutter button is held halfway.

Auto-Focus Target: The camera has 35 Auto-Focus targets for focusing on the subject. In the All-Target AF mode, the camera automatically chooses from the full set of the 35 AF targets. In the Single-Target AF mode, you can manually select one AF target for accurately focusing on the subject after composing the shot. The Group Target mode lets you select a group of nine AF targets, and the camera chooses the specific target for focusing.

ISO Settings: The sensitivity can be set automatically or manually. The manual ISO sensitivity ranges from LOW (equivalent to approximately ISO 100), ISO 200 to ISO 25600, with selectable ISO steps of 1 EV or 1/3 EV.

White Balance: Color reproduction depends upon light conditions. You can choose from 4 options for setting the white balance:

  • Auto: For General Use, used for most light conditions
  • Preset: You can choose from the following presets:
    • 5300K: for shooting outdoors on a clear day, for sunset/sunrise, or fireworks
    • 7500K: for shooting outdoors in the shadows on a clear day
    • 6000K: for shooting outdoors on a cloudy day
    • 3000K: for shooting under a tungsten light
    • 4000K: for shooting under fluorescent lighting
    • 5500K: for flash shooting

  • Custom: Color temperature set in the custom white balance menu (between 2000K and 14000K)
  • One-Touch: Color temperature set by the one-touch WB method

Sequential Shooting: In addition to shooting single frames, the E-M10 can also shoot images continuously. When Sequential H is selected, photos are taken at approximately 8 frames per second for as long as the shutter button is pressed. Focus, exposure, and white balance are fixed at the first shot. Sequential L takes photos at about 3.5 fps while the shutter button is held down. Focus and exposure are fixed according to the options selected for AF mode and AEL/AFL.

Self-Timer: The Self-Timer lets you take pictures after a preset amount of time. You can choose from 2 seconds or 12 seconds. You can also set up a custom self-timer, choosing the number of frames (1-10), time of delay to first shot (1-30 seconds), and interval between multiple shots (0.5, 1, 2, 3).

Bulb Shooting: The E-M10 can take extra long exposures with bulb shooting. When the camera is set to Bulb, the shutter remains open as long as the shutter button stays pressed. You can set a maximum exposure time for bulb shooting between 1 and 30 minutes. Use of a tripod and the optional RM-UC1 remote cable are highly recommended for bulb shooting.

Time-Lapse Photography: The camera can be set to shoot automatically with a set time lapse, to be viewed as individual photos or as a time-lapse movie. This feature is only available in the P/A/S/M shooting modes. You can set the total number of frames (1-999), start waiting time (00:00:01 to 24:59:59), interval time (00:00:01 to 24:59:59), and turn on/off time lapse movie. If either the start waiting time or shooting interval is set to longer than 1 minute 30 seconds, the monitor and camera power will turn off after 1 minute. Ten seconds before shooting, the power will automatically turn on again.

Flash Modes: The E-M10 comes with a pop-up flash. You can select from several flash modes: Auto, Fill in flash, Red-eye reduction flash, Slow synchronization (1st curtain), Slow sync (1st curtain) with Red-eye reduction, Slow synchronization (2nd curtain), Manual flash, and Flash off. Some flash modes are not available for all shooting modes. You can also manually set the intensity of the flash to full, 1/4, 1/16, or 1/64 power.

External Flash: The E-M10 has a hot shoe for attaching an optional external flash unit, such as the Olympus FL-14, FL-20, FL-36R, FL-50R, FL-300R, and FL-600R. These external flash units communicate with the camera, allowing you to control the camera's flash modes with various available flash control modes, such as TTL-AUTO. The units listed above have a remote control mode that can be used for wireless flash photography.

Bracketing: To increase your chances of getting the perfect exposure in difficult shooting conditions, you can set the camera to take a number of photos at different exposure values for each frame. Frames are shot at optimum exposure, plus pictures adjusted in the opposite directions of exposure. You can perform bracketing in the following ways:

  • AE Bracket: Three frames are shot using automatic exposure. You can set the compensation value to 0.3 EV, 0.7 EV, or 1.0 EV.
  • WB Bracket: Three frames are shot using different white balances; one at specified WB, one adjusted toward amber-blue color, and the other toward green-magenta. You can set the bracketing adjustments in 2, 4, or 6 steps.
  • FL Bracket: Three frames are shot with different flash intensity. Compensation values can be set at 0.3 EV, 0.7 EV, or 1.0 EV.
  • ISO Bracket: Three images are taken, each with different ISO sensitivity, with shutter speed and aperture fixed. Compensation values can be set at 0.3 EV, 0.7 EV, or 1.0 EV.
  • Art Bracketing: Multiple images are taken, each with a different art filter setting. You can select which art filters to include in the bracketing shot.

Metering Modes: There are 5 ways to measure the subject brightness:

  • Digital ESP: Camera measures light levels and calculates the differences in 324 separate areas of the image.
  • Center-Weighted Average: Camera provides the average metering between the subject and background lighting, placing more weight on the subject in the center.
  • Spot: Camera meters a very small area around the center of the subject.
  • Spot with Highlight Control: If overall background is bright, the camera shifts toward over-exposure so white areas don't turn gray.
  • Spot with Shadow Control: If overall background is dark, the camera shifts toward under-exposure so black areas don't turn gray.

Face Detection: The camera will detect people's faces in the frame and adjust the focus and metering automatically.

Multiple Exposure: The E-M10 lets you create multiple exposures in a single frame. Methods include: two frames combined as one, portions of one frame merged with portions of another, or RAW frames overlaid in the playback mode.

Digital Level: To ensure that your pictures are level perfect, the camera has a digital level gauge that can be viewed in the monitor and the electronic viewfinder.

Photo Playback: You can play back images one at a time, or in an index display of 4, 9, 25, or 100. You can also display images recorded on the memory card by date (calendar display). While in single image playback, the image can be magnified to 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x, 10x, or 14x for a closer look.

Playback On TV: The E-M10 allows you to play back your still images or movies on a TV. The camera has a Micro HDMI (Type D) output for connecting to an HDTV. Output resolution can be set to 1080i, 720p, and 480p. No Micro HDMI-to-HDMI cable is included. In addition, you can connect the camera to a TV with composite video, using the optional CB-AVC3 AV cable connected to the camera's multi-connector.

HDMI Control: When HDMI Control is set to "On", the camera can be operated by a TV remote control when it is connected to the TV via HDMI. The TV must support HDMI control. During single-frame playback, you can display or hide the information display and the index display.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer, regardless of brand.

Power Options: The E-M10 is powered by the supplied BLS-5 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (7.2 volts 1150mAh). The battery charges in approximately 3.5 hours in the supplied BCS-5 battery charger. The BLS-5 battery is good for approximately 320 shots on a single charge.

Practical, Powerful, Versatile

Written By Tim S., Allentown, PA on Monday, August 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This little power-packed camera is an example of how good an entry level OMD can be. It's close to perfect. Fast focus. Easy WiFi implementation. A very usable touch screen. Excellent JPEG quality. Ultra-customizable. It unleashes creativity with the now-famous Art Filters which were introduced some years back - now imitated, but never duplicated by numerous other manufacturers. The newest fun feature, Photo Story takes your creativity even further. This camera feels solid and looks great. The optional grip is a must. Three lenses that make this camera shine: (1) 12-50mm EZ (internal zoom - both manual and power operation, plus a built-in macro button on the lens. (2) 40-150mm 1:4-5.6 R ED zoom lens. (3) 45mm F1.8 prime. I am super pleased with the E-M10. I've owned both the E-M1 and E-M5. The E-M10 hits the sweet spot in price and function for my photography style.
Pros:
Speed Form factor Features Build Outstanding LCD and VF Fun Versatile
Cons:
Weak flash, but it has a hot shoe if you need more flash power. Not water-resistant - if that's a must for you, get the E-M1 for an additional $400-$500. Not enough grip for large hands - buy the optional grip - you'll be glad you did.

bigs pic from small package

Written By rick422, chicago on Friday, July 18, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Olymous 10 has all the features I'd ever need, slightly smaller than the OM 5 , but with the OM5 now having a discount I'd take the weather sealing and a little better built camera. The flash on the om10 is nearly worthless, but the dayight pics are great. with a small zoom like the 12-34 lumis the camera is a near go anywhere package. with a large lens the body is a bit overwhelmed and there is not a lot of grip area.
Pros:
small. fast, very good jpeg, many easy to key functions
Cons:
poor grip, poor flash

Very pleased

Written By JRon, New Lenox, IL on Friday, June 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice equipment. I jumped on the DSLR bandwagon when the Nikon D40 was released about 8 years ago. Although it still takes good pictures, we left it at home more often than not, favoring our iPhones. But this one is small enough to tag along everywhere (I use the pancake lens, so it collapses fairly small). Controls are as complex or as simple as you want them to be. The art filters and other effects are pretty neat, and I find the whole package more intuitive than a SLR. I found that it was the least expensive mirrorless that had a viewfinder, optional or integrated. You can find more knowledgable reviews elsewhere (D P review) but it's the same price everywhere. But it from Crutchfield, they were fantastic the deal with and it arrived darn quick!
Pros:
Viewfinder Art filters / effects Looks cool Lots of control options
Cons:
Lots of control options Battery life seems short because of the image stabilization

This is compact and FF like camera. There is only thing that I am uncertain is depth of field because of crop factor 2x. I like most the retro style and dial buttons. Also the ability to take live bulb mode photos is very good. I prefer to buy it with 9-18 olympus lens, this combination is perfect.
Pros:
Price Plenty of lenses Small - Light
Cons:
DOF
