Our take on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 (no lens included)

by Woody Sherman
Olympus

Want a camera you can grow into? Try a compact system camera.

These digital cameras combine the creative options of a DSLR with portability that's more like that of a point-and-shoot. Their automatic modes will help you take striking pictures from day one without having to be an expert. However, like DSLRs, compact system cameras (CSCs) have interchangeable lenses, and advanced control and processing. You can explore these features for even better results as you take time to learn more about the hobby. Cameras in this class have large image sensors for beautifully detailed pictures, but their mirrorless design means the camera bodies and matching lenses can be smaller, lighter, and more portable — great for snapping memorable pics when you're on the move.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1's substantial grip makes it easy to hold onto.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1's substantial grip makes it easy to hold onto.

Informed by tradition, powered by innovation

How does Olympus keep doing it? For years they've specialized in making small, full-featured interchangeable-lens cameras that photo enthusiasts rave about. The new OM-D E-M1 is the latest entry in this tradition, picking up features from 2012's spectacular E-M5, but also from Olympus' very well-regarded E-5, a standard Four Thirds camera released back in 2010. The new E-M1 natively hosts all M.Zuiko Micro Four Thirds lenses. But the advanced hybrid phase- and contrast-detection of the redesigned autofocus system also enables the E-M1 to mount standard Zuiko Four Thirds lenses by means of an available MMF-3 adapter, broadening your lens selection and creative choices along the way. And with on-board Wi-Fi® and a clever smartphone app that allows wide-ranging remote viewing and touch-control options, the E-M1 is more than ready for its turn on the world stage.

Built for speed — and quality

The OM-D EM-1, in addition to being compact, takes a continuous stream of high-resolution pictures at a blazing 10 frames-per-second. Its new autofocus system locks in your subject in record time thanks to the ability to adjust its focusing strategy according to your needs. Perhaps it's best to think of the E-M1 as a camera that makes the most of your photographic and video opportunities, as it's designed from the ground up to react quickly to your changing environment.

Speed is important, but without proper image quality, it will only get you so far. This latest release from Olympus no longer requires an anti-aliasing filter, so the resulting images have a sharpness and clarity that rivals that of top-end full-size, full-frame DSLRs.

Wi-Fi convenience and control

The camera creates its own Wi-Fi hotspot, so you can easily transfer files to a smart device for convenient sharing and uploading. But Olympus' free app does far more than many similar apps from its competitors: you can monitor what the camera is looking at on your tablet, for example, adjust a variety of camera settings (including exposure compensation), use the touchscreen to focus and even take a picture by tapping the screen.

Better feedback means better pictures

The E-M1 excels at giving you solid information about what you're seeing. The electronic viewfinder features 2.36-million dot resolution. You'll get an extremely detailed representation of what the sensor sees, combined with an overlay of the information you need to make your best exposure. Similarly, the LCD display is also highly detailed, with over a million dots of resolution, giving you crisper, cleaner feedback about the images you've captured — or the ones you're about to capture.

Exceptional stability

Like many Olympus cameras these days, the E-M1 features Olympus' brilliant 5-axis image stabilization. This technology allows you to take even better images while on the run or in low light by accounting for up/down, right/left, and in/out movement... and rotation in two axes as well. This means less blurring and smearing, and more keepers along the way.

Rough and tumble expert

Oh, we almost forgot. This camera is 100% rugged. Olympus describes this camera as dustproof, splashproof, and freeze-proof (down to 14°F). That just adds to its road-friendliness. Compact, fast, versatile, and tough. Sounds like the perfect photographic road companion.

Features

Overview: The E-M1 is the newest model in the OM-D series of mirrorless, digital interchangeable lens cameras from Olympus. The E-M1 features a Micro Four Thirds mount and a lineup of quality lenses to choose from. (This E-M1 body only kit includes no lenses.) Advanced features include a 5-axis Image Stabilization System, fast auto focusing, a 16MP Live MOS image sensor, and an Electronic Viewfinder.

M. Zuiko Digital Lenses: The E-M1 is compatible with the following M. Zuiko Micro Four Thirds lenses:

Note: The MMF-3 adapter allows you to mount a Four Thirds lens on the Micro Four Thirds-compliant E-M1 camera.

Rugged Construction: The E-M1's Magnesium Alloy construction makes the camera lightweight and tough. It is also built so that it is freezeproof, dustproof, and splashproof, so you can depend on the camera in harsh environments.

Image Pickup Device: The E-M1 uses a 4/3" Live MOS sensor (17.3 x 13.0mm) with approximately 16,800,000 total pixels and 16,280,000 effective pixels. This is the same sensor used in Olympus DSLRs, and is 8 times larger than the typical sensor found in the average point-and-shoot camera. The Live MOS sensor is complimented by Olympus' newest TruePic VII Image Processor for increased ISO sensitivity and fast auto focusing.

Dust Reduction System: The E-M1's Dust Reduction System includes a Supersonic Wave Filter to eliminate dust particles on the image sensor. The self-cleaning sensor unit silently vibrates 30,000 times per second, ensuring clear, spot-free images.

3" LCD Monitor: The camera has a 3" Tilt Touch Wide LCD for framing your shots and viewing your digital pictures and videos. The 1,037,000-dot display can be tilted up approximately 80° or down 45° for low- or high-angle shots. Touch navigation lets you control the camera in both the shooting and playback modes with the touch of a finger.

Electronic Viewfinder: In addition to the 3" monitor, the E-M1 has a built-in, high-resolution Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) with a display lag time of only 29ms. The 2,360,000 dot EVF provides a bright clear view of your subject with a choice of five different grid display modes. You can switch between the EVF and the 3" monitor with a press of a button. There is also a diopter to let you adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight.

Image Recording Formats: The E-M1 records digital still images in JPEG format, as well as RAW uncompressed images. RAW images can be processed into JPEG files in the camera or using the supplied software. You can record up to 30 seconds of audio with still images in WAV format. Movies are recorded in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 and Motion JPEG with 16-bit PCM stereo audio at a 48 kHz sampling rate.

Still Image File Sizes: The E-M1 allows you to shoot still images in Large, Medium, or Small, with your choice of 4 compression modes. You can set the aspect ratio to 4:3, 16:9, 3:2, 1:1 or 3:4. Compression modes available for each picture resolution are Super Fine (1/2.7 compression), Fine (1/4), Normal (1/8), and Basic (1/12). RAW images can be recorded only in 4608 x 3456 resolution with lossless compression (approximately 1/1.5 compression). Available image sizes are as follows:

Aspect Ratio Large Medium Small
4:3 4608 x 3456 2560 x 1920 1280 x 960
16:9 4608 x 2592 2560 x 1440 1280 x 720
3:2 4608 x 3072 2544 x 1696 1296 x 864
1:1 3456 x 3456 1920 x 1920 960 x 960
3:4 2592 x 3456 1440 x 1920 720 x 960

Movie Modes: There are six movie modes from which to choose:

Record Mode Pixel Count File Format
Full HD Fine 1920 x 1080 MPEG-4 AVC/H.264
(Display on TV)
Full HD Normal 1920 x 1080
HD Fine 1280 x 720
HD Normal 1280 x 720
HD 1280 x 720 Motion JPEG
(Computer playback or editing)
SD 640 x 480

Recording Media: Still images and movies with sound are recorded on SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. (Class 6 cards or higher are recommended for movie shooting.) The E-M1 is also compatible with UHS-I and Eye-Fi cards.

Wi-Fi Function: The E-M1 has built-in Wi-Fi functionality for controlling the camera wirelessly using your smartphone, uploading your photos wirelessly to your smartphone or to your computer, and acquire location information for your photos when wirelessly connected to a smartphone with a GPS function. The Olympus Image Share, or OI.Share, application must first be installed on your smartphone. The app is compatible with iPhone (optimized for iPhone 5), iPad, and iPod touch, and requires iOS 4.3 or later. Smart & Easy Connection can be made to the smartphone by QR code.

5-Axis Image Stabilization: The E-M1 features the 5-axis in-body Image Stabilization System to automatically compensate for camera shake in low-light situations or when using a telephoto lens. In addition to vertical and horizontal camera shake, the E-M1's IS System also compensates for rotational movement--pitch, yaw, and roll. You can choose from the following IS modes:

Still Picture Off S-IS Off Image Stabilizer is off
S-IS1 Auto Image Stabilizer is on
S-IS2 Vertical IS Image stabilization applies only to vertical camera shake. Use when panning horizontally.

  • One-Touch: Color temperature set by the one-touch WB method

Sequential Shooting: In addition to shooting single frames, the E-M1 can also shoot images continuously. When Sequential H is selected, photos are taken at approximately 10 frames per second for as long as the shutter button is pressed (up to a maximum of 41 frames). Focus, exposure, and white balance are fixed at the first shot. Sequential L takes photos at about 6.5 fps while the shutter button is held down (up to a maximum of 50 frames). Focus and exposure are fixed according to the options selected for AF mode and AEL/AFL.

Self-Timer: The Self-Timer lets you take pictures after a preset amount of time. You can choose from 2 seconds, 12 seconds, or Custom Self-timer, which lets you set the number of frames (1-10), number of seconds to first shot (1-30), and interval between shots (0.5, 1, 2, or 3 seconds).

Bulb/Time Photography: The E-M1 can take extra long exposures with bulb and time photography. When the camera is set to Bulb, the shutter remains open as long as the shutter button stays pressed. During time photography, the exposure begins when the shutter button is pressed and released, and ends when the shutter button is pressed again and released. To reduce camera blur, you should mount the camera on a tripod and use a remote cable (RM-UC1).

Flash Modes: The E-M1 comes with the external FL-LM2 flash, which attaches to the camera's hot shoe, and plugs into the Accessory Port just above the viewfinder. You can select from several flash modes: Auto, Fill in flash, Red-eye reduction flash, Slow synchronization (1st curtain), Slow sync (1st curtain) with Red-eye reduction, Slow synchronization (2nd curtain), Manual and Flash off. During Manual Flash, you can set the intensity of the flash from full to 1/64 power in 19 steps.

Bracketing: To increase your chances of getting the perfect exposure in difficult shooting conditions, you can set the camera to take a number of photos at different exposure values for each frame. Frames are shot at optimum exposure, plus pictures adjusted in the opposite directions of exposure. You can perform bracketing in the following ways:

  • AE Bracket: You can choose from 2, 3, 5, or 7 frames using automatic exposure. You can set the compensation value to 0.3 EV, 0.7 EV, or 1.0 EV.
  • WB Bracket: Three frames are shot using different white balances; one at specified WB, one adjusted toward amber-blue color, and the other toward green-magenta. You can set the bracketing adjustments in 2, 4, or 6 steps.
  • FL Bracket: Three frames are shot with different flash intensity. Compensation values can be set at 0.3 EV, 0.7 EV, or 1.0 EV.
  • ISO Bracket: Three images are taken, each with different ISO sensitivity, with shutter speed and aperture fixed. Compensation values can be set at 0.3 EV, 0.7 EV, or 1.0 EV.
  • Art Bracketing: Multiple images are taken, each with a different art filter setting. You can select which art filters to include in the bracketing shot.

Metering Modes: There are 5 ways to measure the subject brightness:

  • Digital ESP: Camera measures light levels and calculates the differences in 324 separate areas of the image.
  • Center-Weighted Average: Camera provides the average metering between the subject and background lighting, placing more weight on the subject in the center.
  • Spot: Camera meters a very small area around the center of the subject.
  • Spot with Highlight Control: If overall background is bright, the camera shifts toward over-exposure so white areas don't turn gray.
  • Spot with Shadow Control: If overall background is dark, the camera shifts toward under-exposure so black areas don't turn gray.

Face Detection: The camera will detect people's faces in the frame and adjust the focus and metering automatically. A maximum of 8 faces can be detected.

Multiple Exposure: The E-M1 lets you create multiple exposures in a single frame. With Auto Gain on, the brightness of each frame is set to 1/2 and the images are overlaid. When set to Off, the images are overlaid with the original brightness of each frame. You can also overlay multiple exposures on a RAW image recorded on the memory card and store it as a separate image.

Digital Level: To ensure that your pictures are level perfect, the camera has a digital level gauge that can be viewed in the monitor and the electronic viewfinder. Both the vertical and horizontal level can be checked with the level gauge display.

Photo Playback: You can play back images one at a time, or in an index display of 4, 9, 25, or 100. You can also display images recorded on the memory card by date (calendar display). While in single image playback, the image can be magnified to 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x, 10x, or 14x for a closer look.

Playback On TV: The E-M1 allows you to play back your still images or movies on a TV. The camera has a Micro HDMI (Type D) output for connecting to an HDTV. Output resolution can be set to 1080i, 720p, and 480p. No Micro HDMI-to-HDMI cable is included. In addition, you can connect the camera to a TV with a composite video, using the supplied AV cable connected to the camera's multi-connector.

HDMI Control: When HDMI Control is set to "On", the camera can be operated by a TV remote control when it is connected to the TV via HDMI. The TV must support HDMI control. During single-frame playback, you can display or hide the information display and the index display.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer, regardless of brand.

Power Options: The E-M1 is powered by the supplied BLN-1 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (7.6 volts/1220mAh). The battery charges in approximately 4 hours in the supplied BCN-1 battery charger. The BLN-1 battery is good for approximately 350 shots on a single charge.

Optional Power Battery Holder: The optional HLD-7 is a combination battery holder and grip designed for use with the E-M1. The HLD-7 can hold an additional BLN-1 battery to double the shooting capacity of the camera.

The Best of The Best

Written By Bernie, Yorktown Heights, NY on Sunday, February 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I began my venture into 4/3rds photography with a Lumix GF1 and was so delighted with what mirror-less can do I explored for a camera that would meet my needs. Tried out Sonys. But once I used an Olympus 5 I quickly bought the E-P5 and finally the OM-DE-M1. It is the flagship of my 4/3rds support system. It is just amazing in its versatility. I only use whatever light is available. It has produced excellent results with a minimum of adjustment. I have had nothing but compliments from clients. I feel safe and secure with what that small, but tough camera delivers.
Pros:
Everything you can expect from a well made pro camera. The list is long and can be found at the Olympus website without hype! The best of the best!
Cons:
My advice is patience with settings. The camera offers more than one way to many of the settings. Once you arrive at what you want to use, leave it be.

Best mirrorless camera period!

Written By Jlim, Phila., PA on Saturday, January 18, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Olympus OMD E-M1 is the best mirrorless camera on the market, period. Everything about this camera just works and works flawlessly. Image quality is outstanding. With no AA filter, the images are sharp and colors punchy. Viewfinder is the best EVF on the market (as of this writing). Handling is great. Camera is weather sealed, which means you can shoot with it in any weather with confidence. Focus is blazing fast. Best 5 axis image stabilization. Compared to other mirrorless cameras ... I have had the E-M5 and I wasn't sure if this was worth the upgrade. After shooting with the E-M1, I can say without reservation that it is definitely worth the upgrade. This is the camera the E-M5 should have been. The only advantage is that the E-M5 is slightly smaller, although the E-M1 has better handling due to the built in grip. I have also shot extensively with the new Sony A7. I had high hopes of the Sony, but was very disappointed. With the lack of image stabilization, shots were hit or miss, especially in low light. There was also noticeable noise when shooting in high iso/low light. Summary - if you're seriously thinking about investing in a mirrorless camera, the E-M1 is the best one you can get. You won't regret it. Just make sure to pair it with one of the many excellent prime MFT lenses.
Pros:
Awesome IQ (image quality) Blazing fast focus/operation Excellent build quality Best EVF/LCD screen Best 5 axis image stabilization Small size (compared to DSLRs) Tilting LCD screen Weather sealed Great handling Customizable dials/buttons Just works!
Cons:
No 24p video

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I will make it short. OMD E-M1 is the best Micro 4/3 camera! Built quality and very ergonomics to handle. Nothing to complaint. Image quality is outstanding.
Pros:
Lightweight, easy to use, built quality and very ergonomics layout of the buttons
Cons:
None so far.
