Our take on the Canon EF 28-135mm USM IS Lens

by Dave Bar

CANON AUTHORIZED DEALER

This Canon EF series lens offers fast, silent autofocus, and a versatile focal range for shooting with Canon autofocus film and digital SLR cameras. But its big claim to fame is its renowned Image Stabilization (IS) technology, which lets you take sharp, in-focus photographs in all sorts of lighting conditions. Here's how it works.

We've all taken a picture and had it turn out blurry because our hands moved a little while we were capturing the shot. Image Stabilization works around this problem. Built-in vibration sensors steer a special set of optical elements inside the lens, neatly compensating for camera movement and stabilizing the image. You get much sharper pictures — even in low-light conditions where hand motion can easily cause blurred images with a regular lens. IS lenses are much loved by photographers who don't like to carry along a tripod on every excursion, but who require crisp photos as a matter of course.

High-tech Image Stabilization isn't the only advantage provided by this lens. A built-in ring-type Ultrasonic Motor makes autofocus very fast and very quiet. There's also its wide-angle picture-taking capability — great for capturing panoramic landscapes, or snapping large group shots of folks in tight quarters. And it even excels at taking precise close-ups of objects as near as 20 inches.

An all-around winner

Written by Zak Billmeier, Staff Writer - Creative, on 10/30/2012 10:09:00 AM

I have owned this lens for five years, and have taken thousands of pictures with it. It's a nice, lightweight lens with a useful focal range that works on any of Canon's DSLR cameras. I mostly use it with my 40D (a crop-sensor camera), but I find it to be an even more useful lens for a full-frame camera because it brings the wide angles into play.

This was my first image-stabilized lens, and wow, does that feature ever deliver. I have gotten some sharp shots in low light that would have been impossible with stabilization. One thing I learned, though, was that you want to turn the stabilization off when you are panning the camera from side-to-side; the stabilizer is meant for still subjects. But no matter, you can just flick the switch on the side.

I continue to be pleased with the pictures I get using this lens. When I'm outside I usually shoot it at f/8, and everything is nice and sharp. Like all lenses, it softens slightly at max aperture, but only subtly so (in fact, you may not even notice). I have no complaint about its quality — it is my go-to outdoor lens when I want to travel light.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not a lens expert, but this lens lets me get close from far away and wide when I want to be wide, like for landscapes. Especially like the anti-shake and auto-focus capability. Works seamlessly with the EOS 60D. Sharp, clean, beautiful pix.
Pros:
- Anti-shake - Auto focus - Landscape to portraits in one lens - Auto focus is very quick
Cons:
None.
