A classic camera, reborn

Whether you do most of your photography in the studio or out in the field, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV can keep up with your demands. This 30.4-megapixel, Wi-Fi-equipped update of a popular full-frame favorite excels in different shooting situations and in all kinds of lighting. If you need a fast, responsive camera that consistently produces pro-quality, high-resolution still images and 4K video, this multimedia maestro might just be your new best friend.

The 5D Mark IV is equipped with a high-performance DIGIC 6+ image processor for outstanding image quality and even faster continuous shooting at up to seven frames per second. The improved ISO range of ISO 100-32,000 (expandable to ISO 50-102,400) yields excellent results in available light. The camera's megapixel-packed full-frame sensor further enhances low-light performance, with reduced noise, even at high ISO settings.

Keep up with the action

The 5D Mark IV's Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system enables fast, smooth autofocus performance in Live View mode and during movie shooting, where quick focus is essential. Movie focus is natural and precise, even when switching between subjects. This 61-point system excels in challenging light, and accurately tracks fast-moving subjects even when they change speed and position. A 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor lets the camera quickly recognizes subjects for more precise autofocus, metering, and exposure compensation. Canon's Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system uses this information to provide more consistent autofocus on moving subjects.

Put your vision in motion with 4K and Full HD video recording

If you're new to videography, the EOS 5D Mark IV is easy to handle and fun to use. It shoots 4K video at up to 30 frames per second, and Full HD 60p movies that can be saved as MP4s for easy sharing. Intuitive touchscreen operation lets you select autofocus points while the camera is still rolling, and you can rely on continuous autofocus for easy shooting.

The autofocus system's speedy performance helps keep the camera focused during action sequences. 8.8-megapixel still frame grabs let you extract beautiful photos from your 4K videos, plus you can use this feature to easily verify that your movies are sharply focused. Use a mini HDMI cable (not included) to watch your video creations on a compatible 4K TV.

Wi-Fi and GPS for a smooth workflow

The 5D Mark IV's built-in Wi-Fi lets you transfer images and MP4 movies from the camera to your compatible phone or tablet with Canon's free Camera Connect app. Use the app to change camera settings, and turn your mobile device into a wireless remote. NFC touch pairing lets you connect easily to any compatible device with NFC, like the Canon Connect Station CS100 wireless storage hub. The camera's GPS system helps you tag your images with location data and automatically adjusts the time settings. Wi-Fi lets you quickly upload your geotagged images when you're shooting in remote locations.

Recording Features

Overview: The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV digital SLR kit includes the camera body only. No lenses are included. Improvements over the 5D Mark III include a new 30.4 Megapixel Full-frame image sensor, the Digic 6+ processor, 4K video capabilities, built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, and a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface.

Rugged Exterior Body: The EOS 5D Mark IV's exterior is constructed with lightweight and ultra-rigid magnesium alloy that fits comfortably in your hand.

Intelligent Viewfinder: The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV uses an eye-level pentaprism viewfinder with 0.71x magnification for approximately 100% vertical and horizontal coverage. The viewfinder uses a transparent LCD to superimpose a customizable combination of focus points and gridlines directly over the image. Unlike with other cameras, the intelligent viewfinder gives you the choice of seeing shooting information or looking only at the scene in front of the camera.

Clear View II LCD Touch Screen Monitor: The EOS 5D Mark IV features a 3.2" Clear View II TFT color LCD monitor with approximately 1,062,000 dots which allows you to view and shoot real-time images. The monitor has a capacitive touch screen that allows you to make menu selections, touch focus and touch shutter in Live View, and browse images using your fingers. The LCD monitor offers 100% viewing coverage and 3 automatic or 7 manual brightness levels to choose from. In Live View, grid lines can be displayed in 9 sections (3x3), 24 sections (6x4), or 9 sections with diagonals, as well as a dual-axis electronic level. The Live View function enables you to shoot your subjects while viewing them on the LCD monitor.

30.4 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: The EOS 5D Mark IV features a huge, full-frame sensor. The 30.4-megapixel CMOS sensor delivers images of up to 6720 x 4480 pixels. For the flexibility to shoot in even the most dimly lit situations, the EOS 5D Mark IV offers Canon's highest ISO sensitivity to date, ranging from 100-32000 (expandable to ISO L: 50, H1: 51200 and H2: 102400). Thanks to improved noise reduction technologies, images shot even at highest sensitivity will be remarkably smooth.

DIGIC 6+ Image Processor: The EOS 5D Mark IV uses the DIGIC 6+ Image Processor, with a dedicated DIGIC 6 just for metering. It can deliver continuous shooting speeds of up to 7 frames per second, 4K video recording, and lower noise at high ISO settings.

Sensor Cleaning System: Canon's Integrated Cleaning system includes a self-cleaning sensor unit and software that can remove the effects of dust on the image sensor. The Self Cleaning Sensor, attached to the image sensor's front layer (low-pass filter) can shake off dust automatically when the camera is powered on or off. In case visible dust remains on your images, you can append the Dust Delete Data to the images to erase the dust spots later using the provided Digital Photo Professional software.

Note: Dust which could not be removed by the automatic sensor cleaning can be removed manually with an optional blower.

Dual Recording Media Slots: The EOS 5D Mark IV has two slots for inserting recording media. The camera can use a Type I CompactFlash (UDMA Mode 7 supported) card or an SD card (SD, SDHC, or SDXC), including UHS-I cards. If a card is inserted in both slots, you can select which card to record images to, or record the same images simultaneously on both cards. No recording media is supplied with the camera.

Note: When recording 4K video, you must use a CF card UDMA7 (100 MB/sec or faster) or SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 (90 MB/sec or higher).

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW (14-bit Canon Original) formats. Simultaneous RAW + JPEG recording is also possible. The image's aspect ratio can be set to 3:2, 4:3, 16:9, or 1:1. JPEG images will be saved with the set aspect ratio, while RAW images will always be saved in 3:2, with the aspect ratio information stored in the image. Movies can be recorded in the MOV format (4K video: Motion JPEG, Full HD + HD movies: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, Audio: Linear PCM) or MP4 (Video: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, Audio: AAC). Available image sizes include:

Dual Pixel RAW: When shooting RAW images (other than mRAW or sRAW), you can enable the Dual Pixel RAW function. This allows you to perform post-shooting processing with the Digital Photo Professional software, including micro-adjustment of the position of maximum sharpness and resolution using the depth information contained within the file. You can also reposition the viewpoint or foreground bokeh, and reduce the appearance of ghosting in images.

4K Frame Grab: You can select any desired frame from a 4K movie, and save it as an 8.8 MP (4096 x 2160) JPEG still photo. This 4K Frame Grab is done during playback.

Drive Modes: The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV offers the following Drive modes:

  • Single Shooting: When you press the shutter button completely, only one shot will be taken.
  • High-speed Continuous Shooting: While you press the shutter button completely, multiple shots will be taken continuously. High-speed continuous shooting can record up to approximately 7 shots per second (6.6 fps with Anti-Flicker Shooting, and 5.0 fps with Dual Pixel Raw shooting)
  • Low-speed Continuous Shooting: While you hold down the shutter button, you can shoot continuously at approximately 3 shots per second.
  • Silent Shooting: Silent Shooting is quieter than normal shooting. You can choose Silent Single shooting and Silent Continuous shooting with a maximum of approximately 3 shots per second.
  • Self-Timer/Remote Control: The camera will record an image 2 or 10 seconds after pressing the shutter button on the camera. Using the optional RC-6 Remote Controller, you can operate the camera from up to approximately 16.4 feet. With the RC-6, you can either shoot immediately or use a 2-second delay.

61-Point Autofocus System: The EOS 5D Mark IV features a newly designed 61-point High Density Reticular AF for greater accuracy. It features up to 41 cross-type points, an extensive AF area, and a wide subject tracking area. There are 7 AF point selection methods:

  • Single-point Spot AF (manual selection)
  • Single-point AF (manual selection)
  • AF Point Expansion (manual selection, 4 points (up, down, left, right)
  • AF Point Expansion (manual selection, surrounding 8 points)
  • Zone AF (manual zone selection - 9 zones)
  • Large Zone AF (manual zone selection - 3 zones)
  • AF Point Auto Selection AF

Focusing Modes: The camera employs one of 3 AF systems, plus manual focusing, to let you seize every photo opportunity with fast, accurate focus:

  • One-Shot AF: suited for still subjects, the camera focuses only once.
  • Predictive AI Servo AF (III): for moving subjects when the focusing distance keeps changing. The subject will be focused continuously while the shutter button is pressed halfway.
  • AI Focus AF: switches from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving.
  • Manual Focusing

Shooting Modes: The EOS 5D Mark IV's top-mounted Mode Dial offers the following shooting modes:

  • Fully Automatic (Scene Intelligent Auto): The camera analyses the scene and sets the optimum settings automatically.
  • Program AE: The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness.
  • Shutter-Priority AE (Tv): In this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject. A slow shutter speed can create a blurred effect, while a fast shutter speed can freeze action.
  • Aperture-priority AE (Av): In this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness. A low aperture number can create a blurred background (narrow depth of field), while a high aperture number can create a sharp foreground and background (wide depth of field).
  • Manual Exposure: In this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired.
  • Bulb: When Bulb is set, the shutter stays open as long as you hold down the shutter button completely, and closes when you let go of the shutter button. Bulb exposures are for night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, and other subjects requiring long exposures. It is recommended that you use a tripod and a Remote Switch, such as the RS-80N3, for bulb exposures.
  • Custom Shooting Modes: You can register the shooting mode, AF mode, menu settings, etc. to the three Custom Shooting Mode positions (C1, C2, C3) on the Mode Dial.

Metering: The EOS 5D Mark IV features the iSA (Intelligent Scene Analysis) system, with a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor. The system provides precise exposure metering, detects flickering lights, and allows for enhanced scene recognition and face detection.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Metering: The camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure.
  • Partial Metering: Effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 6.1% of the frame at the center.
  • Spot Metering: For metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 1.3% of the frame at the center.
  • Center-weighted Average Metering: Metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene.

ISO Speed: The camera's ISO speed can be set between 100 and 32000 in 1/3-stop increments to suit your shooting conditions. The camera also features a Low ISO setting equivalent to ISO 50 and two High ISO settings equivalent to 51200 (H1) and 102400 (H2). In addition the camera features an Auto ISO setting which allows the camera to automatically set the ISO speed from 100 to 12800 in Scene Intelligent Auto mode, ISO 100-32000 in P, Tv, Av, or M mode, or ISO 400 in Bulb mode.

Picture Style: By selecting a Picture Style, you can achieve various effects matching your photographic expression or the subject. You can also adjust the Sharpness (with separate strength, fineness, and threshold parameters), Contrast, Saturation, Color tone, Filtering Effect (monochrome), or Toning Effect (monochrome) of each Picture Style. Picture Style selections include:

  • Auto: Color tone is adjusted automatically to suit the scene. The image will look vivid, especially for blue skies, greenery, and sunsets in nature, outdoor, and sunset scenes.
  • Standard: A general-purpose Picture Style to suit most scenes. The image looks vivid, sharp, and crisp.
  • Portrait: Suited for close-up portraits, this Picture Style is for nice skin tones, making the image look softer. You can change the color tone to adjust the skin tone.
  • Landscape: For vivid blues and greens, very sharp and crisp images.
  • Fine Detail: Suited for detailed outline and fine texture description of the subject, and slightly vivid colors.
  • Neutral: For natural colors and subdued images, no sharpness applied.
  • Faithful: When the subject is photographed under a color temperature of 5200 K, the color is adjusted to match the subject's colorimetrical color, no sharpness applied. (recommended for users who prefer to process images on their PC)
  • Monochrome: Creates black and white images
  • User Defined 1-3: You can register your own Picture Style settings for Portrait and Landscape modes.

High Dynamic Range (HDR): You can take artistic photos having a high dynamic range and preserving detail in highlight and shadow areas. HDR shooting is effective for landscape and still-life photos. With HDR shooting, three images of different exposures are captured for each shot, then merged together automatically. The HDR image is saved as a single JPEG image. You can choose from several options: Natural, Art Standard, Art Vivid, Art Bold, and Art Embossed.

Multiple Exposures: You can shoot two to nine exposures to be merged into one image. If you shoot multiple-exposure images with Live View shooting, you can see how the single exposures merge while shooting.

White Balance: White Balance is for making the white areas look white. You can choose from the following white balance settings: Auto (Ambience priority), Auto (White priority), Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten Light, White Fluorescent Light, Flash Use, Custom, and Color Temperature.

EX Speedlite Compatible: The EOS 5D Mark IV features the acclaimed E-TTL II flash metering system. With any of the flashes in the EX-series Speedlite line, E-TTL II provides reliable flash output whether shooting fill-in flash pictures in sunlight, or using flash in total darkness.

Note: The camera does not have a built-in flash.

Built-in Wi-Fi: The camera features built-in Wi-Fi, which lets you connect wirelessly to a compatible smartphone, tablet, or computer. You can also wirelessly print images using a Wi-Fi printer, or save images to a CS100 Canon Connect Station. Using the free Canon Camera Connect app on a compatible iOS or Android device, you can shoot remotely from a distance, with complete control of settings such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, and shutter release. The EOS 5D Mark IV is fully DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compliant, so you can share images with other DLNA products, including HDTVs and smartphones.

Note: The Canon Camera Connect app is compatible with iOS devices running iOS 7.0 or later, and with Android phones and tablets running Android 4.0 and up.

NFC Technology: Built-in NFC (Near Field Communications) technology lets you easily connect wirelessly with compatible Android devices (4.0 and up) or the CS100 Connect Station by touching the two items together.

Built-in GPS: The EOS 5D Mark IV has built-in GPS, which provides geotag information from overhead satellites. Location data, as well as time and date information, are embedded into the shooting data of your still images and videos. The camera is compatible with American GPS, Russian GLONASS, and Japanese quasi-zenith Michibiki satellites to give you accurate location data around the world.

EOS Webcam: Using Canon's EOS Webcam Utility software, you can use the camera as a webcam and livestream from a remote setup. You will need to connect the camera to your computer, using the included USB cable. While you are streaming, you can also record the video internally on the memory card. The software works with many of your favorite streaming apps, including YouTube Live, Zoom, Skype, Facebook Live, Microsoft Teams, Apple FaceTime, and Messenger. EOS Webcam Utility is compatible with Windows 10 (32- or 64-bit) and macOS Catalina, macOS Mojave, and macOS High Sierra.

Resize: Images shot with the camera can be resized to make the pixel count lower, and saved as a new image. You can only resize JPEG Large, Medium, Small 1, and Small 2 sized images. JPEG Small 3 and RAW images cannot be resized.

Cropping: You can crop the image and print only the trimmed portion as if the image was recomposed. You can change the frame size, move the trimming frame, rotate the frame (vertical to horizontal or vice versa), and correct the image tilt up to +/- 10 degrees in 0.5-degree increments. Images shot in JPEG S3 or RAW or 4K Frame Grab images cannot be cropped.

Direct Print/PictBridge Printing Capability: The camera is compatible with Direct Print (Canon) and PictBridge-compliant printers. With the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a Canon Direct Print compliant printer or a PictBridge-compliant printer, and print without a computer. The PictBridge standard allows you to connect the camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

DPOF Print Settings: On the memory card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once on Canon Direct Print or PictBridge-compliant printers, at participating photo labs or at photo printing kiosks.

Customer Q&A

Q
Does Canon have a rebate on the 5D mark IV? There is something in their web site about printer paper and buying that and getting $300-$400 back?

Thanks for your question. I don't see any similar special on the official Canon website. Through Crutchfield the current offer includes a free memory card, camera bag, anti-fog wipe, and cleaning cloth. It also includes the free accidental damage protection from Canon for 13 months, same as on their website. Hope this helps.
