Canon's L Series lenses are world-renowned for their high-performance optics and rugged reliability. You'll really see the difference that pro-quality glass makes with this 70-200mm f/4 telephoto zoom. Fans of outdoor sports or wildlife photography will especially appreciate the razor-sharp images and fast, silent autofocus this versatile lens offers.

The 70-200mm focal range and relatively large maximum aperture also make this lens ideal for capturing stunning portraits. You can softly blur unnecessary background details, while making your crisply focused subject pop from the photo. And unlike many lenses whose aperture and brightness decrease as you zoom closer to your subject, this Canon features a maximum aperture of f/4 which remains constant throughout the zoom range. That means your images stay bright as you zero in, and your exposure values remain unchanged (a very handy feature when shooting manually).

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this length primarily for indoor sports and art performances.

The lens surprised me with its speed to focus, sharpness, and the color accuracy. Considering it lacks the built-in IS, make sure you use some support if you shoot at the maximum focal length.

With an updated body capable of high ISO shooting, I feel the max aperture of 4 should suffice in most cases for me.

Nice pouch and a hood included.

Pros: Quick to focus Photo quality Relatively light Price

Cons: Lack of IS 200 mm may be short of outdoor sports

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent lens which I've used both inside and outside with great results. Recently took family pictures at a dimly lite school event. I was concerned about not having IS or a lower aperture in this venue. The pictures came out great! Colors are vibrant and clarity is outstanding. I also have a 15-85 zoom and the 70-200 is a nice addition. Next purchase will be a 1.4x extender to provide more range especially for wildlife photos.

Pros: Image quality, lightweight, fast auto-focus, price for capability, build quality,

Product Research

Overview: The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM is a high-performance, L-series telephoto zoom lens that combines a light weight, compact body with an f/4 maximum aperture. Inner focusing and the ring USM enable quick and quiet autofocusing.

Compatibility: The EF 70-200m f/4L USM is an EF Canon lens which means it is compatible with all Canon digital SLRs (those that accept EF and  EF-S lenses, plus those that accept EF only; which would be the Full-frame EOS 5D Mark II), as well as Canon EOS film SLRs.

Lens Construction: The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM lens features a lens construction with 16 elements in 13 groups.

Diagonal Angle Of View: This Canon telephoto zoom lens provides a diagonal angle of view of 34° to 12°.

Zoom: The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM lens features a 2.9x optical zoom and manual zoom ring.

Ultrasonic Motor (USM): With the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), you can expect fast and quiet focusing capability.

Inner Focusing: Inner focusing affords a long working distance of approximately 3.9'. Ring USM for silent and high-speed AF, and full-time manual focusing is also provided.

Auto/Manual Focus: To shoot in Autofocus mode, set the focus mode switch on the lens to "AF". To manually focus the camera, set the switch to "MF", and focus by turning the focusing ring. The focusing ring always works, regardless of the focus mode.

Focusing Range: You can se the focusing distance range to 3.9' to infinity or 9.8' to infinity. By setting the suitable focusing distance range, the actual autofocusing time can be shorter.

Infinity Compensation Mark: To compensate for shifting of the infinity focus point that results from changes in temperature, the lens features an Infinity Compensation Mark. The infinity position at normal temperature is the point at which the vertical line of the L mark is aligned with the distance indicator on the distance scale.

Infrared Index: The infrared index corrects the focus setting when using monochrome infrared film. Focus on the subject manually, then adjust the distance setting by moving the focusing ring to the corresponding infrared index mark.

Lens Hood: The include hood (ET-74), can keep unwanted light out of the lens, and also protect the front of the lens from rain, snow, and dust.

Optional Accessories: A circular polarizing filter (sold separately) can be attached and used without difficulty because the front lens element does not rotate during focusing. You can also attach an optional  Tripod mount, Extenders and Extension tubes.
